That transparent keycap video editing when you were testing the switches was great. I'm consistently in awe of the brevity and production quality of this channel.
I really like these swich videos. Bring more videos on frankeswitch, there are many valid configurations some little known. If I could open the acquaintance with these videos I would be grateful.
They sound almost the exact same to my ear. I can't tell them apart from the sound alone. The extra tactility might be worth it, but for the added cost it seems like a tough sell over U4Ts.
Yea they sound almost exactly the same but if you really pay attention (you probably can’t tell even using them daily) I think the U4T’s are slightly deeper.
Love the Holy Bobas! I have them built with the halo stems, kailh Polia stems, and glorious panda stems. Haven't tried the polias yet since I'm waiting to mount them in my Scarlet but that's definitely the cheapest way to build these right now. Only issue is that the tight gazzew housing can cause some stems to bind
@@jomimaro1 if it's the invyr holy pandas from drop, those I think are actually different than the Halo clear stems. I haven't tried those personally but I did watch someone stream building holy Bobas with them and they did also encounter a little bit of binding. I think you can remedy this either with a spring swap or just having extra housings to try out. But good luck and hope you enjoy the results!
I always thinks Halo stem is magical. You can put it almost in any housing and they will feels good Sadly i prefer silent switches nowadays. I use Boba U4 Silent now I hope Kailh will make Silent Halo or Silent Polia so i can use them
The real most tactile frankenswitch I've ever used was a blueberry stem in koala housing (or T1). Way too big of a sharp bump to be used on the regular though. But way more tactile than holy boba or even zykos. Not saying it's better because it's a bit uncomfortably tactile to be honest. It sounds decently thocky as well.
Just finished making a board full of soft pandas with polia stems. (price per switch for this combo was $0.65 with both switches being on sale) I think I will enjoy these for daily use because they're supposed to be less tactile than normal panda leafs (leaves?) by design. Maybe I haven't come to be enlightened by super tactile switches yet but I like having fingers without soreness from typing. If gazzew boba switches weren't so expensive, I'd definetly buy some for the housing alone.
There is also the alternative of buying Boba Housings only from Gazzew directly (only in USA), and this will actually drive down the costs per switch even lower!
Does the top housing have tolerance issues with the halo true stem? I tried making holy bobas and the top housing is too small for a halo true stem to fit which causes the stem to have issues returning.
thank you for the video, .. amazing work man!.. i have a question though.. not sure if i understood, you said in 0:46 that the housing comes from the Boba U4T and the stem comes from Halo True, but in 2:29 you said that you used the Stems from your holy pandas in order to make your Holy Bobas... does this mean that i could use stems from wither the Halo True or from my Holy pandas? this would indeed save me some money as I already have Holy Pandas! please confirm this is correct. thanks!!!
Halo stems are also used in holy pandas - thats where the 'holy' part of the name is from. Technically Holy Pandas are already a frankenswitch. Just drop made them an in stock item
tbh it would be a lot better to give switch sound tests in a board that is un PE foam un tape modded because those mods make every board with any switch all sound the same
Yeah. I noticed this too. I bought 80 bobas, and more than half of them were too tight to be compatible with the halo stems. Luckily I only needed about 36 for the alphas on my new 50% build. Gonna have to find some other switches to throw under the modifiers though.
You mentioned lubing the housings with 3203, does that mean you lubed the stems with 205g0 and the housings with 3203? Was there any problem with using two different types of lube?
I recommended using 3203, as that is more typical for tactiles, but I personally used 205g0 everywhere. There should be no problem with mixing lubes, there's just not really that much of a reason to do it.
you must damaged the leaf when putting them back together, Gazzew said w his switches you shoud use his methos of lubing. I end up broken like 10 of them while making HolyBoba. And i also can confirm that lubing these don effect the tactility that much, if you r not touching the legs
Im running into the issue of the gazzew housing being too tight for the halo stems and therefor the stems get stuck once pressed down. Is there something I need to do to solve this?
In the recent batch, Gazzew increased the tolerance on their U4Ts, making the Halo true stems bind on release issue happens a lot more often. Before you will have maybe 1 out of 4 switches that will bind. But in my recent batch I was making for a friend, out of 90 switches, only 5 was not binding. We had to dremel away some of the housing wall to allow the stems to fully release. So just a heads up for anyone thinking about making some. EDIT: Seems to be more of an issue with the later batches of Halo true stems than U4T housings.
Correct me if I'm wrong. So you're saying for earlier batches, the failure rate is 1/4 and now it's 5/90 = 1/18 so it's significantly lower? I'm new to frankens and looking into making some bykos, are there other issues that might come up?
@@kennethng9653 Failure rate is higher, sorry if my wording was a bit confusing. In my case, out of the 90 sets of switches, I was only able to make 5 good switches that did not bind (after matching through all 90 boba tops for each stem, very tedious lol). Since bykos are just zybos with boba top??, you might see the same issues. I think I saw a video of another reviewer on the HB mentioned he ran into the same issue with the later batch as well.
@@jondoe9596 Thanks for the reply! That's for sure an incredibly tedious process... Is there any chance that there's a change to the stems that's causing the issue? I remember seeing on Discord that Gazzew has not made any revisions to his boba tops so I'm a bit confused. Also, do you happen to know when the last good batch was?
@@kennethng9653 It could possibly be the stem. I'll need borrow a friend's holy panda switch he got from Drop last year to test. I will report back the result later today. I also found the video that I saw when I ran into this issue, ua-cam.com/video/zsXR6YN9Dcs/v-deo.html. In the video description, he mentioned the issue for the later batch happened around August?
@@kennethng9653 Seems like you were right in suggesting it was the stems. The old Halo stems were definitely easier to fit. Tested with Halo stems from Drop holy pandas bought last year. Also tested with the Halo stems from the first holy bobas batch I made earlier this year for a coworker. Both of these stems have an easier time fitting in the U4T housings. Putting both new and old batch of Halo stems back to back, there seems to be a slight difference in the width size. Unfortunately, I left my digital caliper at work and cannot give a precise measurement of what the differences were. Maybe you'll have an easier time with kailh polia variation of this stem? Being a linear switch person, I don't have much access to tactile parts, and I don't know anyone who has access these stems to do more testing.
Not really. Smoothness is largely dependent on the housing and not the stem, which is why you can put a cream stem into another housing and it won’t be extremely scratchy.
Did you have any issue with the housings being tight? I did try to make holy bobas but the stem only goes up halfway because the top housing are tight.
I think it's very close. Holy Boba is probably more tactile, but the bottoming out 'clack' on the Zykos/Bykos is sooo satisfying that it can make it seem to be more tactile than it actually is. I'm using Bykos myself. Both are incredibly tactile though, far above the others in my opinion.
This is the biggest myth of Boba u4ts. They sound much better with lube and they are scratchy without lube. I have them and have daily driven them for around 9 months, and this is what I've noticed.
I'm having a hard time believing anything other than noise is actually changed here. From pictures it seems to me that Boba stems are just one of at least a dozen Halo stem clones with the exact same shape on the tactile bump. Thus swapping the stems would accomplish nothing tactility-wise. Zykos/Bykos make sense because the Zealios stem bump is genuinely subtlely different from Halo-class stems, but the Boba is not.
