Bay of Angels (La baie des anges) is a 1963 film by Jacques Demy. Jean is a young, directionless banker wiling away at his banking job. By chance, he is taken to a gambling hall by his friend, which starts a flirtation with the past time, where one spin of the roulette can win you six months' salary. When he ventures to the French Riviera, he encounters a glamorous and cunning older woman Jacqueline who teaches him the way of gambling. Seduced by her sleek and her charm, Jean plummets into a world of high stakes wagers, endless nights, and perennial unattached partners. Music by Michel Legrand and costumes by Pierre Cardin.

    One of his best films

I think this is easily the weakest in Demy's unbelievable run of masterpieces in the 60s, but it's nice to see him making a movie so close to the Nouvelle Vague (Lola is perhaps the best Nouvelle Vague film, but it's much more Demy doing his thing in the conditions given to him, while Bay of Angels seems to me more connected to the movement). Loved your comment about time and Demy's characters, it's maybe the most important thing people forget about him: his movies are not that happy! All his characters are always in this unstable position of searching, looking for some moment of happiness that may never arrive. Hope you watch Model Shop sometime, it's such a brilliant and sad film, and really shows his darker side.
