As part of our new Rising Stars series, we present German pianist Fabian Müller. Hailed by Gramophone for his "satisfying and artistically distinctive" music-making, he performs a selection of his favourite works by Brahms, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff and talks about his life, work and personal interests. Already in 2017, he caused a stir at the International ARD Music Competition in Munich, where he won five prizes, including the Audience Award. Since then he has gone on to establish himself as one of the most remarkable German pianists of his generation, with performances with major German orchestras and the release of two albums.

Disliked. Sorry. Not only the interpretation. DG has done way better with this piece in the past.

The non-musical aspect: it seems that DG firmly decided to adopt pop aesthetics in its videos; I'm regularly notified of new shorts on UA-cam and they're - also regularly - really "kitschig". Better than to try to explain, I'd suggest to just watch them - they're a sort of small-scale Regietheater, I'd say. In the case of this one, just note the background colors, camera movements, or did I become just reactionary?
The really important part: rendition is certainly not perverse, it's accomplished - however, the softening of accents, the "Übertraumhaft" (is there such a word?) atmosphere... Brahms music suffices for itself, no need to underline. One should have in mind he described these three pieces as "Wiegenlieder meiner Schmerzen" (Lullabies of my pains) - but one must also remember he was non-sentimental, as his music always showed, even the very last ones.
Instead of too much talk, one could try to listen to either Kempff or Lupu playing this piece, or Achúcarro, Katchen...
I believe liking is as easy as disliking.
