The reason I prefer leather over balsa is because leather has an additional honing benefit called "stiction." The leather can repair damage much better than balsa because it "grabs" and "smears" (best words I could think of) the steel which repairs most of the damage at the apex.

This also allows the leather to create a microscopic burr when used with compound. Balsa is less likely to do so when the angle is controlled properly.

Even better than either one is a clear, well planed pine board! Also far more available than either balsa or leather and less expensive.

Questions,,, upon using balsa wood with diamonds, do you normal strop on leather only after balsa or shave right after balsa strop straight to face? Thx 😊

What kind of numbers do you get on the Brubacher scale?

Right now I'm using balsa and 1 micron diamond paste, results I get are excellent. I've got a roo strop and .5 micron diamond spray coming..I'm interested to see if there's a substantial improvement on the edges I get

Lether can also be sanded and refinished.

This is some technical stuff man! Very interesting though. I'd love to play around with some diamond sprays and different strops in the very near future - looks like fun.

No doubt, balsa does reduce the risk of convexing. But, thin kangaroo leather is almost as good at that. It really just all boils down to personal preference! Nice vid bro.

There is a guy on ebay, from Australia that sells Kangaroo skins. I bought a roo mouse pad from him, and cut it to size and mounted it on Balsa. You can have the best of both worlds then.

There is a significant difference between the leather from the body of a kangaroo and the leather from the tail of a kangaroo.

Well. If you put the price in proper perspective, you will find that size of 1x6 ,is about 1/6 the normal strop size that in leather sells for between $15-$25. Per strop. At this kangaroo strop of $20, its about 6x as expensive.

Aggressive quality comes primarily from the abrasive. Not the medium or substrate.

Aren't you forgetting the cost of each product. The kangaroo coming from ken, will have you remortgage your home to afford his product. Where as balsa in the size of kangaroo is about 100x ,cheaper!
