    So many people here are completely missing the point of this. Programs like this are less about the vehicles consumer potential and more about training the engineers of tomorrow. Obviously from what was said they are using whatever is at hand which in turn breeds ingenuity.
    Just look at the guys from Virginia Tech and what they've been doing with their electric motorcycle. They're successfully competing against the likes of Honda and Yamaha who are working with astronomical budgets. Personalty, I think project like this are a great idea,

    I bet if the wheels didn't have spokes these cars could squeeze out an extra 40 or so mpg. Or if they put something that covered the spokes, because they do have a lot more air resistance than people think.

    Imagine the possibilities of where you could go with a platform like this though. Use a hybrid drive system, cover the thing in flexible solar panels, rig up a tiny little turbocharger, and a lightweight air conditioning unit for basic comfort.... If you didn't have to worry about getting run over, you'd have a little runabout that could get you to work and back on like a gallon or two a week. Hook up a little streamlined trailer and you could go on road trips for a couple bucks' worth of gas.

      And I bet they could make em pretty safe and light but that would make less money perhaps. A caterham . Mass produced. 50hp only. Boxes and crumple zone between wheels or perhaps a whole new solution like a small protective cage around the seat that comes down or an airbag donut. And honestly I'd have no issue with a half face helmet

    • @gur262
      @gur262 4 роки тому

      And hell I'd be fine with being risky a bit now. I think making a caterham considerably safer could be done for 500bucks 50kg easily enough. If those had the economy of scale of a ford focus and healthy competition in the concept thered be plenty of them. Aero clear plastic shell around too.

      You know what, you’ve got a great point. If I were to change this I would have reversed the wheel orientation so that there would be 2 rear wheels and one front wheel. Same number of wheels, but all three wheels can be embedded into the body of the vehicle. And with that it could be improved; all it would need then is a low center of mass and it won’t be unstable.

    I wonder if they could increase fuel efficiency by running these on rails rather than roads to really reduce roll friction, and also... why not feed compressed oxygen into the engine for standard performance in all altitudes rather than keep re-tuning every time you relocate for a race? That way if you do cross the country you don't have to re-tune based on altitude as you go, you just go.

    • @geshscale6068
      @geshscale6068 Рік тому

      the rails would be best to make a train, and the tuning for air, is that its a 35 cc engine, really small, and it takes energy to run a supercharger, and a turbo wouldn't get enough exhaust. They literary just put a motor on a recumbent reverse trike. search battle mountain velo.

    i have a theory that there might be a weight which isn't the lightest weight of the vehicle possible that increases the efficiency by increasing the coasting duration thereby gaining more savings then is lost by accelerating the extra mass. Maybe i'm way off here but i see it as similar to driving in rolling hills country side where your storing energy uphill, where the engine operates at high efficiency then releasing it down hill on the coasting phase. providing of coarse the brakes are not applied. is there a point which isn't the lightest weight possible where efficiency increases due to the nature of the internal combustion engine?

      I drive a bicycle - I do about 800 km every year and last time I changed tyres was about 3 years ago and these are still ok , but I have to point out that I rotated front with rear one last summer . This mega MPG numbers are achived on average speeds regulated by rules - 15 mph . Air drag gows with v*v*v (v^3) so by dubleing speed you have 2*2*2=8 times more drag . That means that they can do 1700mpg on same tyres on one gallon of fuel thereticly , but that would take 5 days of non-stop driving 15 mph .

      I mean... if you get into an accident on a closed course that's around a parking lot for a competition where the goal is to go a minimum of 15 mph for the highest gas mileage... I'm imagining you'd have to be a shit driver or mental. Or both.

    I’ll tell you what this video really means. The people of the US could save staggering amounts of capital and resources if they radically reduced the weight, speed, and windage of private vehicles on public roads. That’s a simple fact. And it can’t be done right now because big, fast vehicles own the road. The public policies that make it that way are strictly determined not by the people but by private profit interests, chiefly the financial sector but also advertising, construction, insurance, and of course the car industry, all of whom profit hugely off of forcing everyone into a wasteful and expensive mode of transit with absolutely no future. To avoid dying on this hill, the American people must form a government that decouples public policy from private capital interests.

      I'd actually love to see travel like this, but combined with cycling. So. A 3wheel recumbent, bit of solar too. And perhaps going quite a bit faster for a couple hours per day, when you are tired and the sun goes down you go more for fuel. I imagine a tiny electric motor could help a bit still. Maybe getting 800mpg and 25-40mph

      boostercontrol100 ethanol vapor turns back into water as it cools inside the motor. this causes oxidation that blocks passages and constrict fuel flow. ethanol also usually needs about 15% gasoline to make it burn properly.

      charles bishop I been running 4 and half gallons e85 in my mazdaspeed 3 for like 6 years 100,000 miles on stock injectors. Everything still peach and making over 400hp to the wheels stock motor. There alot rumors out there I know its a great race fuel with only like 8% the emissions of gasoline.

    • @kineticinstallationspecial5775
      @kineticinstallationspecial5775 7 років тому

      I don't know about any rumors but a quick Google search can turn up a few facts.
      On the other hand I have seen the runners on a S10 Blazer intake manifold that were 30 - 50% blocked by aluminum oxidation. I don't know where the oxidation came from but I was told that it was from the ethanol in the gasoline we have to run in Colorado during the winter. They're only a couple of gas stations in the state that sell non ethanol gas during the summer as well.

    Hear me out: drive these but in dedicated pathways ONLY by AI in big cities. The pathways are light enough to be built above ground and even connect to buildings. Dedicated structures and AI only makes it a consistent environment AI can operate in properly, with user override for emergencies. Musk's underground tunnels are only useful for military use, not current transportation. With these they become far more viable.

    Our hole auto industry have to change ! This includes the highway industry . In order we can have cars like this on the road . 18 mph is not going to cut it . We need to be at 50 mph to make a difference in time and distance . The auto indusrty with a good help of our crooked government that is bought off by the oil giants . If we only made the auto even lighter and not heavier in the last 40 years then we may have cars running with less than 400 cc engines and getting 80 MPG . Not the other way around when a subcompact car weights in at over 4,000 pounds that is just stupid . A small SUV is close to 6000 pounds . That is heavier than a 1959 Cadillac . We are traveling at speeds above 70 mph . If the speed limit was reduced to a modest 45 there would not be any deaths . Heck semi trucks is running over 80 down the interstate . At those speeds there is no chance of survival . I dont care how strong and heavy a car is .

    I have to wonder what is the point of the drivers wearing racing style helmets? Come on, they're going 15-18 mph... in a parking lot... in an enclosed trike with 2 front wheels (extremely stable). The helmet seems like pointless additional weight that's probably not that comfortable, either. Oh yeah, they probably see these as more like gas powered bicycles, and bicycles MUST be dangerous, right??
    I wonder if that one carbon fiber vehicle would do any better with 20" front wheels (typical on recumbent trikes) instead of the usual 700c bicycle wheels up front.

    • @Patrick94GSR
      @Patrick94GSR 8 років тому

      How am I missing the point? I definitely acknowledged the fact I appreciate the path this is creating and I do appreciate these young adults for pitching this idea and going forward with it. I just don't see how this type of mobility at it's stage will be practical. There's still a lot of issues needed to be implemented to be a full fledged capable automobile for the masses.

    • @hashimiyazib
      @hashimiyazib 6 років тому

      But you're still missing the point. It's an engineering challenge that breeds ingenuity, not a plan for a real production car. Of course nobody is going across the country at 18mph in a tricycle.
