When the bicycle became popular in the beginning of the 19th century in southern Germany, England, and France, it was the first machine that championed private transportation. Almost 200 years after the invention of the vélocipède and Drais’ dandy horse, personal mobility is one of the highest imperatives in a globalized world. Today, our streets are filled with fixed-gears, roadsters, rickshas, BMX, and electric bikes.
The Human Power Team has demonstrated just how fast you can go with pure muscle power. The third model of the Dutch team’s high-tech recumbent bicycle, the VeloX 3, reached a speed of 133.78 km/h, setting a new world record for the fastest pedal-powered vehicle.
We visited the Human Power Team in their workshop in Delft, where lead engineer Dennis Berckmoes, although still in the middle of making the final preparations for their next record attempt, walked us through the details of the engineering process, that he and his colleagues from the student team go through every year, designing a new highs-peed prototype.
All of the components of the VeloX4, from the chassis made of extremely hard but super light carbon, to the aerodynamics that are tested in the wind tunnel of a space center, to the special gear system, to the 3D-printed special parts, are individually designed and produced.
“This is Formula 1 for bicycles,” as Dennis put it.

@@leanmeangreenbeanmachine3347 Mine is from www.intercitybike.nl but before I had one from www.velomobiel.nl. Velomobiel has the wider range, they have extremely comfortable cruisers (for example the QuattroVelo) but also speed machines (Alpha 7). My DF is quite close to the Alpha 7, the company also sells an even faster machine that's less fit for cities, the Milan. Both companies sell all over the world, I was at Intercitybike a couple of weeks ago talking to a customer from Taiwan :-)

I'm the rural U.S. I commute 50km at a cruise speed of 125KPH on an interstate highway. It's amazing to see how human power is getting close to this. Can only imagine what it will do in small towns.

I'm in my fifties and I've never seen even one velo mobile on the road in real life. Why is that?
@@michaeldesilvio221 I considered buying one used a few years ago. I would think you could vacation around the Netherlands and see a few in or around cities. From what I can gather the cheapest start at $25,000 and require impressive athletic ability and a lunatic level of enthusiasm for human power. So, not a huge market... Naturally flat areas that stay cool/cold year round tend to be the best places to ride fully enclosed.

I bought my velomobile for 7.000€ (new). There are cheaper options, there are more expensive options, but I've never heard of any model starting at more than 12.000€. Also you don't need to be an athlete. I'm no athlete and I ride my velomobile all year. My advice to anyone is: If you ever have the option to do a test ride, do a test ride.

Already did, and long ago, in 1776. Look up Bushnell's Turtle. It was a one man submarine shaped like an egg. It was propelled by a hand crank and it was designed by the American colonists to attack British ships by attaching an explosive charge to the underside of the hull. The Turtle worked but the attempts to attach the explosive charge failed. Google it.
Then the battery powering the screen goes out while going 40 mph.

y Nyggi, the power usage of the screen is probably less than 5-10 watts, wouldn't slow you down much, but it would add complexity for a generator

It has different gears in them, similar to a mountain bike.
Recumbent bikes do not do as well up hills. Although it's far more aerodynamic than a regular bike and faster on the flats, it's hard to get leverage and recoup other muscle groups... That's how I understand it at least. When I'm climbing hard on my bike, I'm using my core and upper body quite a bit.

You are voting and developing things with your attention. Be active on the fields what you want to make easier. Already we have hundreds of technology at our hands what was only a dream even decades before.
No, there are a couple cyclists out there who are willing to spend more on a bike than on rent/mortgage.
I paid €2k for a used velo. Even with old and slow machine 200 watts gives a speed of well over 30kmh. My only problem with the older machines are the rider space, a new machine Bülk mk 1 drove from the southern border of Germany to the North border in less than 30 hours, over 3 hours faster than the previous record.
As an urban planner, commuter biking fascinates me. But from my experience there is so much negative pushback when the construction of bike/active transportation infrastructure is suggested. Technologies like this may be able to open the door to serious AT investment once safety, cost, and other factors are worked out.
I could really see this catching up with the techies in SF. I would love to ride this to work. SF already has special lanes at some places for “neighborhood vehicles “.
I wish I had that bike!!! If the whole world used those bikes imagine how great life would be. Less of those nasty accidentns and everyone keeping in great shape
Working on it! :-) I commute to customers by a fully human powered velomobile (up to about 30mi/50km one way), and trying to convert others into doing so also. There's more advantages than just everyone in shape and less accidents. We would solve a huge portion of our pollution issues in an instant if everyone under the average car commuting distance in my country (23 km) would get out of the car and into a bike.
Just add wings to this and you could fly! You would get lift off then land and pedal and then lift off again.

adding wings to the bike wouldn't do much and you'd have no way to generate lift till you touched back down... HOWEVER, a recumbent pedal system could possibly power the propeller of a small lightweight aircraft... Just like pedal car replicas of muscle cars and hot rods, I think it'd be cool to have a P51 replica built with the intent of a glider, then add a recumbent pedal powered propeller...

The german manufactured Milan has a Formular 1 like secure cell - many of this high speed bikes selled and also some accidents known, where the driver has had only scratches even if biscyle was total destroyed.
Did you see the foam at 6:50 that foam can absorb shocks when you crash.
The foam is about spreading the load . it ' s effectively a bridged double skin structure , so each skin can be thinner , saving weight & cost & the load is carried between the two by the foam ...... Bright or possibly flurescent paint so it is well visible, add a simple electric motor to assist the rider and hola, you have an efficient vehicle, for even the regular folks to go far quickly.

Bugsy C converting mechanical work to electricity is very inefficient. Converting electricity to mechanical work is really efficient. Converting mechanical work to well nothing and just using it is 100% efficient

It should be mentioned here that the record mentioned has been exceeded in this year of 2015 and there is a new "Fastest Bike in the World". The AeroVelo Team from Canada have done what this team did to the old record, blown right past it.These Dutch student teams have helped to really up the record however and are to be congratulated for their good work. Maybe next year they will take it back.

I think that is really neat. I agree that recumbent are really fast. I read that they are banned from bike racing because of an unfair advantage. I think they should have a separate bike race for recumbent bicycles.

You can race recumbents no problem. They are not allowed in certain races for the same reason car racing has classes; f1, Indy, 100cc kart, le man.
Recumbents go up hills just fine. I've overtaken upright riders plenty of times on my recumbents.
Major issue I see is the visibility and maneuverability. Not to mention the fact that you cant stop on your own
Dude, just that wheel hooked up to my cell phone battery is gonna take me 20km! The transfer on it was insane...I NEED THIS WHEEL!!! I am being silly, but I know batteries and you hook up a couple and get that three wheeler on the go, you got a keeper!
I remember having a race with "Peloton Pete". He was on a recumbent and we were on our tandem. He taunted us saying that tandems don't climb hills. He was half our age of course. Anyway over the next 60km of undulating terrain, firstly rising for 40km then falling for the next 20 we passed him on every upgrade and he could go past us on the downgrade. Although the recumbent was fast in good conditions he couldn't get the power out as efficiently in climbing. Our average speed was pretty similar. The next day he was on his roadbike and he could easily overtake us.

the driver is probably an Olympic Athlete so for normal people you would need electric assist and self balancing electronics to make this work plus in the real world you have to be able to get in and out easily

I like the gearing ratio, I thought that was quite interesting, but I don’t think it’s a practical bicycle for most people, particularly if you live in an urban environment, where would you park it & how would you secure it?

Great project! Streamlined recumbent bikes with electric assist would be a great alternative to a car for shorter commutes. Economical, healthy and environmental benefits. (People with a long commute should probably move house/job!)

a moped burns less power, (in joules/watts) than charging a Ebike from a power plant. they just need to be held to the same emissions standards that cars are.

As someone who has ridden an enclosed recumbent for two years (using a model WAW 4th generation) there are some distinctive disadvantages: it's large and a bit cumbersome. It needs significant space to be stored. When it breaks down on route and you can't fix it on the road you can't just push it on so you need help to transport it. It can't be easily transported, it's a bit like a motorcycle, you pretty much need a trailer or a decent size pickup. It's very bad on uphills, it's a heavy bike and you can't put force downwards on the pedals like on a normal bike, uphills require lots of effort. You can't really fully enclose yourself and protect yourself 100% from the elements, your visor will fog so you'll always have to have air flow inside the cockpit and even than it will still fog up easily. Visibility for you and to others is an issue, you're not as visible (even with a flag on your velomobile) to others and you're also less aware of your surroundings especially when enclosed in the cockpit. A velomobile is very susceptable to bad roads, much more than a normal bike. You'll feel any bump or any imperfection on the road. It's loud and noisy inside, remember it's an enclosed shell, all vibrations and noises are amplified within the shell.
That being said, there's nothing faster than a velomobile but you need good clean straight bicycle roads. You can ride against a strong wind and you won't really feel it. It's a comfortable ride but as soon as you ride on bad roads you'll feel as if you're in a shaker.

An electric bike can go much faster than that. Creating one that will do 400 km/h is perfectly possible. What this is about however is traveling as efficient as possible, in this case also on human power. We humans are limited to about 2000w continuous from the strongest riders. Since we emit 75% as body heat, the strongest cyclists can put out about 500w into the pedals. Translating this into a speed as high as possible is the challenge.
@@0BLACKESTFUN0 They will catch you because even if your aerodynamics are good enough to let you go 200, during acceleration you're still limited to about 1000 watt from a strong rider, which won't get you there quick. I have been stopped by police however, for doing close to 70 km/h. They wanted to check if my bicycle is motorized.

I LOVED this video. It shows what the human is truly capable of and shows the advancements in human ingenuity. I would love one. Although I would love weird as hell I would be saving money in the long run. But with American roads I think it would be useless for me to own one. The only way I could even think of owning one is if the US government made all the roads as smooth as European roads are. US roads and traffic laws are not really set up for bicyclists as it is so id feel unsafe commuting to work in something that low to the ground.

Sprinting muscles aren't the same as endurance muscles. It requires a different training technique. You might want to google endurance runners for different distances.

This is a racing machine. You wouldn't drive a top fuel dragster on the street either, cause running out of gas within a minute is a bit inconvenient. I cycle in a velomobile daily, also on bad roads - mine is a street model with full suspension, lights, blinkers etc.
it's not a mountain bike yo... but yeah, that thing wouldn't survive the appalachian roads and hills.
@@greedfox7842 This thing might not, it's basically a prototype. Don't know the Appalachian Hills so well, have been on various places between NY and Richmond (most Washington/Baltimore/Charlottesville), but don't really remember seeing anything there that my VM wouldn't be able to handle without problems. Basically if it's asphalt or hard sand, I'm fine. Grass and mud is possible but removes any advantage in speed, which is what they're for.
In that area, I'm not sure if I'd dare to cycle though, but that's probably also caused because I don't live there and we're spoiled here. If I would have to, I'd want one of these for the huge advantage in terms of weather protection; in one of these, I'm barely affected by extreme cold (0 Fahrenheit without a coat is no problem). 100F might be a bit less comfortable :-)
It's sad but I think the majority of people are just to plain fat / lazy to ever even consider riding a bike to get places short / medium distances away. When I was a kid that was how you got places. Never asked mom or dad for a ride. Now, As long as I could have something fully enclosed like that one with three wheels that tilts I would absolutely use it to get around. To dangerous though with all the crazy distracted drivers in their big hulking SUV's driving like maniacs to do unfortunately. Sad how "progress" is determined by how much we can make computers / machines do for us so we eventually won't even need to move..

jtkent28 If people are just too fat, then stop hating, stop judging, and decide to save the climate with nice comfortable light enclosed recumbent electric bikes for them, which use 1/100th the energy to get them where they need to go, and then they won't need the gas guzzlers. Put pedals in them too and they would have a chance at rehab-ing themselves. Bikes are NOT an all or nothing proposition, if they were it would look just like it does now, climate change, till we all croak. People will never go for it until you do, even if it kills everybody, because biking just looks too impossible to them. Look at the older people, they could never do it, but the more people with bikes of all kinds the more we'll build separate bikeways for them, like in Europe.

The average velomobile can't wheelie, because the weight distribution is much better than on a regular bicycle. Some models can do a stoppie, I can blast off with a screeching rear tyre, like some cars do.

It's actually the other way around. My velomobile is a €9000 investment (only 100% cost if you don't exploit the commercial possibilities, which is what my company is doing). It'll cost me about €400 of maintenance yearly. Insurance is minimal, there's no tax. I also stopped paying for the gym, although you could say I eat a bit more due to sporting more (every day). Now calculate what your car will cost you yearly including gas, insurance, tax, and - if you buy a second hand lemon - repairs: You'll probably spend about €2000 on the car and spend the rest of that €9000 >>yearly

when battery technology gets to a point where it doesn't take 5 times as much power to charge a battery than it takes to just burn coal for the same power output.

A coal (steam engine) would go father for the same amount of coal, by five times, than an electric car charged from the coal power plants that most countries use. and don't even get me started about diesel power plants or nuclear.

the Velotilt had one issue.... the 2 faired rear wheels created a depression behind the bike and didn't allow for laminar flow.
This limited the speed potential.

@Seb Ba if I can't go fast I'd rather have a regular bike for the better handling, or in some cases a fixie for the ability to stop and idle.
and as an engineer, most cars/trucks have a lot of extra bullshit you could cut off them without affecting the car part.

Very nice bike/ vehicle, combining such a cockpit with an electric assistance would make cycling with the cars pleasant.
You can't follow in the trafic if you are climbing a slope. Also long range travel in trafic will only be possible for a few thousand athletes

Even if they manage to get rid somehow of weather and being an athlete problems you would still probably need to have a shower after a ride so not really that usefull when driving to work or to meet up with friends. For now the project really doesn't look like a future in any shape or form.

Designing the surface of the shell like the surface of a golf ball can increase speed performance.
That only works to gain lift with backspin which increases drive length. That's why it's used on golf balls and not aircraft.

I believe that the hole in the front part is for air entrance, there's a filter and a plumb that goes at the driver face.

motorcycles weigh more, require a special license and school attendance, and have federal laws requiring people to wear helmets and require vehicle inspections/DOT safety rating.
@@N75911_ Did you see the inside of that bike? It had way more security features on it than a motorcycle, and the motocycle weighting more wont stop it from going 100km an hour than just a bike going 50km an hour.

@@maximuslongrod6361 yes? You have to go to a driving school for motorbikes to get a license for motorbikes. Even offroad licenses in most states you need a license by going to offroad school. And you wear a helmet, and pads in most states.
I ran the sums and something is wrong. 600W (minus 100 for rolling resistance) would equate to a drag coefficient of 0.34. That velo would have a much better drag coefficient than that. How did you determine your power output?

My kiddo loves his bike trailer. I saw a woman on the train the other day with three young daughters on a cargo eBike. Youngest on a front child seat, two on the rear bench seat. Common in Copenhagen. If we can engineer a 3,000lb machine to transport 4 ppl we can design a 100lb bike to satisfy the same need.

Just as the first automobiles didn't have seat belts, air bags, crumple zones, or safety glass - in time, everything was adapted and incorporated.
Yes, it's going to add weight, but by that time - I'm sure there'll be some sort of breakthrough in easing the mechanical load a human would have to apply to the vehicle.
Plus, riding a regular bicycle is a danger that most riders accept when riding one. So, it's all a matter of who uses one and where it's being used.

Doesn't make sense. Using the oculus in a high performance prototype like we see in the video would add too much weight. And for a commercial application in a speed-bike it would be too expensive and unecessary since those will have see-through windshields.
The bike on the video already has a camera and a screen on it. By using an oculus rift, or something similar, it would expand the field of view and provide better depth perception. Another option is to look at something like Samsung's GearVR. Rather than having the screen in the vehicle, have a slot that you plug your cellphone in to provide said screen for the direct video feed from the stereoscopic cameras.
However, I agree that if there is a lightweight, strong, transparent material, then the need for video pass-through becomes moot as one can simply make the entire shell out of that.
Ultimately, though, many people are likely too lazy to use such a device currently, and would prefer to use a vehicle that they don't have to power themselves to provide locomotion. In addition, storage space for things like the groceries or gifts for little Billy's birthday would be needed. Tesla's got my hopes on it. They're doing awesome things.
We actually looked into using an Oculus Rift, but found that it is really difficult for your brain to process the experience while keeping the bike rubber side down. Maybe in the future!

Just bike normally, it's not that hard. And a normal bike can already be faster than a car. Consider inner city commutes. The bike can weave through traffic way faster than a car.
+Aesthetic of Dust nowadays the traffic is slowed down because every idiot on a bike is driving in the streets instead on bicycle roads that are next to a street so every car has to wait for an opportunity to take over.... and on the 1st next red light the same biker will slowly move to the front so you can overtake him again and again... not to mention how many cyclists disrespect rules...
When I drive a car I act as a driver. When I ride a bike I do mind my status on the road and avoid main roads and have other options to get about. When I walk I do look out for other cars and time my movement so that I do not become a problem to anybody (or just a little one if I cannot avoid that). How many people do this too?
