    This is a review of the GI Joe's Arctic heavy assault tank, the Avalanche, and it's driver, Cold Front. The Avalanche (not to be confused with the 1987 Battle Force 2000 character) was first released in 1990 and re-released in 1991 with the figure and never available for mail-order afterwards. The tank has a small glider craft that can detach and is one of the first GI Joe vehicles to come with spring-loaded launchers (it had both missiles and discs). Cold Front is very hard to complete with his small visor (which is not designed to detach but comes off freely anyway), tiny microphone and small hand gun, all of which are easy to lose.

    Thanks so much for the shout-out, man! And thanks for continuing the definitive video chronicle of all things ARAH!

    Cold Front and the Avalanche did make comic appearances, they are both in GIJOE ARAH 167 and Cold Front is in GIJOE ARAH 168 since the Avalanche was destroyed in 167. He was also in the DDP DataDesk You are correct that they never appeared in the initial 1-155 Marvel run.

    Of course there are no foot pegs. It's an arctic vehicle. Who'd want to ride on the outside in -40?

    Nice review, I recently restored a Avalanche myself. The kind of white plastic used for this vehicle can also be whitened with household bleach. You just need to be patient; for my Avalanche it took about 2 months to get it all white again. In my experience, bleach has a lasting effect. The result of hydrogen peroxide varies in my experience, I'd be interested in knowing if the Retrobright mix does have a lasting effect. Btw, bleach can only be used for specific, 'matte' plastic, like the Polar Bear, Flight Pod, and Hammer. It does not work on the Snow Cat or Defiant. It might work on the Crusader though, that plastic is less glossy than that of the Defiant. Hope this helps!

    got mine preowned back in the early 90s, missing all the weapons and most of the accessories. Just the main tank, the hover thingy, and the panels that flip up to hold the missiles. Still loved it just because of the size of the thing. Was actually decent to sit figures on, one on each side at the front, someone in the top where the mine layer should be, and when the shooting starts everyone can hunker down in the back, when the flyer takes off.

    You know after all of these years I knew NOTHING about this tank. Thanks for teaching me a history lesson.

    Had one, but never liked it as much as the Snow Cat and WOLF...Always felt like it was out of scale to the rest of the line. Great review though!

    I think the "disc" shooter is kind of out of place on this vehicle, get rid of that and I kind of like it. replace the disc shooter with that big gun.

    where would you find retro-bright? can you buy it?

      +Impossible Pie Retrobrite is made up of several ingredients ua-cam.com/video/Cr7tr_Ml5k4/v-deo.html you can buy at a pharmacy or online (hydrogen peroxide, glycerin, baking soda, Oxy-Clean powder and exposure to sunlight/UV bulb). ToyPolloi used cream peroxide alone ua-cam.com/video/GomO3zoM2XE/v-deo.html (you can find that at a pharmacy or online, but should get 40 Volume/12%). The cream is not as powerful as retrobrite mix, but easier & cheaper.

    Awesome vehicle. Was this the first model to use that mine launcher? I know other vehicles adopted that weapon in the mid 90's.

    • @formbx257
      @formbx257  8 років тому +1

      +Alamo Patriot Yes, this was the first use of the spring loaded mine launcher. The 1990 Cobra Rage used a sliding mechanism instead. The spring loaded launcher was next used for 1992 Destro.

      formbx257 Thanks for the info. I had no doubt you had the answer. Was there also a vehicle in the mid 90's that featured the mine launcher but it was batterie powered? The memory I have was that you turned on a switch to trigger the mine thrower then each time a mine was released into the chute it would fire out.

    • @formbx257
      @formbx257  8 років тому

      +Alamo Patriot I don't know of any GI Joe vehicle that had a motorized firing feature (other than the missile-firing 1991 Battle Wagon). Not many GI Joe vehicles had mine launchers, so it may have been another toy line.

      formbx257 Maybe I am confusing it with a Ninja Turtle vehicle. It's been a long time. :-)

    i never liked the disk thrower on the right side or the springloaded missle launcher on the left. they could have went with another cannon or some other weapon system on the right side and put a running board with at least 5 foot pegs on the left side.

    Love the reviews. Not really a fan of the "does a modern figure fit in it" segment- not sure what the point is.
    Still awesome reviews

    What a mess of a design on this vehicle. I pretty much stopped collecting G.I. Joe around 1988-89. Glad I didn't miss much. Nice job on the review though.
