Did GIANT make the best E-bike? Honest review

- Riding San Juan Trail in Orange County, this trail is a great test for fitness and super fun DH section. It is about 18 miles top to bottom including the Lollipop loop. Uphill is not for the weak! It is a brutal climb and the Down hill is no joke either. This bike made the climb so fun I would ride this trail more often. I would not replace my Pivot firebird with an E-bike but man they are a great addition!! hit up www.sonorancyc... if you want one of these bikes. Let them know Nando sent you.
Great review. I felt that it was a bit heavy too but with that comes stability. The bike was flawless as far as performance and predictability right out of the box. That saddle was awful though for my skinny ass. Give me a chromag any day! Thanks for letting me try it at dog park!
Hellfuckncheap,juts,killer seat.
Thanks, I have a Giant SX , agree totally with your comments. $$ I rode every ebike I could. Yes the Specialized were fantastic, but over here in NZ the price is too high. For much less you get the Giant with great spec and you do get used to the motor noise. Great bike for the price.
I totally agree, I reset the suspension and it is really fun!! open up the rebound on the forks makes a big difference
My thoughts also
Looked at Levo but over priced here in Uk in my opinion
The giants and the trek just have far better components as standard at a lower price
Thanks for the great review. I have the E+1 pro and am really happy with it and as always Giant makes a great value bike.
One thing I find useful riding uphill switchbacks like you were is to modulate the rear brake while keeping power on -I find this smoother and more controllable. Only problem I had with the bike is water getting into the controller on a rainy day.
Nick Taylor I had same problem
@@Bikepark167 I took it back to the dealer and they replaced with an updated part that hopefully will be more waterproof.
Nick Taylor giant don’t make great bikes my Derailleur doesn’t shift properly on my giant hard tail but on my Norco Dually it works great
Regenerative motor torque braking system has got to be the next big thing in e bikes .... ( not regenerative brakes but torque braking through motor gears and magnets... with 3 modes of regen and torque resistance )
I have a conversion kit on my ebike, not having any powered braking with the added weight and mass is really rough on my brakes. Agree, torque breaking at minimum on a real mountain bike is needed.
I have one of these and thought it was a little heavy too, wouldn’t mind if it was a bit lighter. Great review but I found my front suspension to be a little too progressive and had to take out a spacer, but I don’t think you were wrong as you were riding in different type of terrain than I do. Thanks!
They should supply a "Power Now" button which would give you a burst of push up to 3 - 5mph so you could get around tight technical switchbacks when it's so gnarly you almost can't stay atop the machine.
Very good price too, especially now that the 2020s are coming out. Excited to see the 2020 model, the new Reign looks good but it's a lot of bike.
Hey. It was fun meeting you at skypark yesterday. Thanks for another nice video! I weighted the decoy, it’s also 53 pounds. I bet the giant rides pretty similarly.
Nick Porter so fun!! Wow 53 is more than I expected. Let me know when you want to ride San Clemente!!
Bikepark167 thanks! I’ll hit you up. Same to you, my locals are Simi and Wilson. Both are pretty rad.
Nick Porter it’s a heavy tank
That noise though .. please Giant run a Brose motor too
Brose motors blow up a lot from most of youtube comments I've read
Try working for a Specialized retailer. The motor in the Levo has been a nightmare.
In 25 years I only shuttled San Juan once. Typically I would start from the bottom and pedal to Bluejay campground... up old SJ, then back down new SJ. I can't wait to do it next on my Levo Expert. It appears that you turned around sooner because you were low on power. I'm certain the Levo 700Whr will do the trick!
I have it. its freaking amazing.the Giant doesn't hold a candle to the Expert Levo
UPDATE: Since my last comment, I rode the entire San Juan Trail (lollipop loop plus out 'n back) on my 2019 Levo Expert. I ended my 22.5 mile ride to Bluejay Camp and back to bottom with 4 battery bars remaining. The Expert comes with a nominal 700 Whr which is 40% more than the 500Whr that comes with most bikes. It's nice to know that one never has range anxiety with a battery this size!
biketothetop The Expert is amazing I’m going to ride Ymir to Salmo via Burlington Northern to the top of the ski hill and back today. I pretty sure I could do it twice on the Expert.
Congratulations on your joy! I see you are referring to Beautiful BC! I had to google search those place names. I love BC and traveled there many times! Enjoy yourself and keep spinning :-)
Nice trails, the bike looks great too! I'd ride it.
Great video! I live in New Mexico and there are some challenging trails here but the San Juan Trail looks extreme! You did well, especially on such a heavy bike. I guess it being electric offset its weight? Thank you for sharing your experience.
As soon as you set off I thought surely it,s not the bike making that racket.I would have thought the quieter the motor the more efficient! Less friction means less noise in turn less wear and tear ! Sounds like my rip saw when the battery is about dead.
Whats about the haibike ones? 120N motor and lighter. Check-up it out
Maybe the Giant is the best e-bike for 1 ride only, because there are multiple reports of the Giant rear wheel/hub failing recurrently.
Apparently the Giant rear wheel hub is not strong enough for an e-bike.
ive put about 100 miles so far.. no hub issues but i did bust a chain lol..
Yupialmostlostmylifeforyearsduetothstcheapshyt,make"converter bikerearearendsetup is miloshyt
This bike hardcore shut, eatn moutsunnup I'd buy it
They put their regular rear hub which is failing even on normal bikes.
What was the weight on the lightest bike?
I've never shuttled san Juan. Only pedaled the whole thing. Yew!! Tho I wouldnt mind a shuttle. Ride soon.
Trail Weaks wait till you’re my age!! Lol
I've put this on my list...
Man, that’s a lot of weight and motor noise compared to a new Levo
Do you own a Levo? I want to try one next, just worried it will feel too much like a trail bike and not handle the big stuff.. but I like the specs.
My levo is silent too, all I could hear was that motor the while time.
Wouldn't touch a Levo. My friends has been replaced twice by spesh. Great service from specialized but he's on his third in 2 months.
@Bill Orr Yes I'm afraid so. It's not the actual motors themselves but the wiring looms. A routing fault that causes some of the cables to basically snap.
James Turnell I have a Kenevo & Levo, not one problem with the motors at all, I did have to get new batteries because the ones I had were faulty, but the eBikes themselves are the best!
And i was complaining about my climb yesterday in hot springs lol...that one would have been brutal on a normal bike. Our day ended early yesterday because we simply got gassed by 1:30 made me realize how much I love my ebike and wished I had taken it!
I think certain trails just are more fun with more energy!!
The Stealth bomber is still the best.
Make Everything Free XX Kranked is better
Does anyone look after those trails? Sorry but the Giant can't compare to the Rockymountain Powerplay.
Michael Towler I saw that Rocky Mountain the other day online. Looks like a great bike. No one really carries it out here. I know there is some forest system out here that controls the trails a bit. But not sure who is in charge at San Juan
Where was this trail at?.. by the way this was a cool video!
Does the bike have any regen feature under braking or coasting?
John Cochran no they have not come up with that yet on these bikes
more eMTB videos, this is the future and get a Turbo levo Expert addition to review
140 travel on an ebike seems like it's not enough. Why not go for 160-180mm travel?
Eric Wahl I agree
what range are you getting out of the battery?
IMRB on full boost I get about 17 miles 3500 feet
What size wheels? Great review.
Sim HB thanks they are 27.5 with 2.6 tires front and rear bike is really fun!!
I'm not heavily considering buying an ebike but does anyone know how much easier there are for climbing hills?
A V that’s the main reason to get one, the climbs are way easier!!! Get more downhills with easy uphills!
Very good and a good value
That's what makes the Specialized Turbo so worth it, no engine noise. That sounds horrible. You shouldn't hear anything on an ebike, I'd spend the money on the Turbo over those jalopy's any day of the week.
Elvisisalive it was half motor half chain guard.. I ride Moto cross so motor noise don’t bother me, I get it when you bikers like it nice and quite, but that’s not worth paying for to me.
@@Bikepark167 I ride motorcross too, and I still don't want to hear the silly sound of the ebike engine. It sound stupid, it should be silent. All good ebikes are silent, you can't hear them at all. If I want noise I'll hop on my CRF450
Elvisisalive ok sounds good
@@danimayb My Turbo Levo has zero noise, I hate to break it to you. None at all.
@@danimayb Not a sound, I'll film it and post it for you
I'm thinking about getting the 2020 Giant Fathom Electric bike. Do you think that its a good mount ebike ?
David Gomez I think Giant makes a great bike, just depends what kind of riding you are gonna do.
@@Bikepark167 I just wanna do some casual riding and maybe a little bit of trail riding nothing too aggressive.
more Nauseacam. looks like every other bike video. cool place, cool bike.
54lbs was about the weight of original huck to flat DH bikes. I'd ride one of those and not bitch about the weight at all, especially if I was passing the weight weenies on their super lite bikes going up the hill and getting lap after lap without wearing myself out going up the hill. Save your energy for ripping it up coming down the hill.
The bike is very nice, but the seat is uncomfortable for me. Others may think it s fine.
OK GREAT..
NOW ...Where IS the Auxiliary Battery Connection located on this bike?
I have the NCM Moscow E bike, it is heavy 29 kilos has a 13 amp/hour battery, and costs 1499.00 Au, solid as a Russian tank all alloy though.
What camera did you use? Hero 7?
Great video!
pasm hero 7 black works great! Chest mount nothing else.
@@Bikepark167 True! Amazing picture quality and stability! Keep up the good work!
What trail head did you start from?
Lobo Mtbr San Juan trail by the fire station I think it’s called lazy camp or something..
What was the price of the Giant?
Steve Hofsaess sorry forgot to mention that, MSRP is 7100 with fox factory and XO1
This bike is fucking beast. Stance0-2 is also njami effing good.
Cool video, thanks.
Does it really make that much noise when riding? Or does it just sound worse on the camera?
Andrew J I adjust the chain guide and it is quieter, still kinda loud but not as loud as in videos
Lol that noise...my haibike it's silent 400 battery and a 80NM yamaha engine.
That is a Great place to ride! Rad!!!
Marti Sutton best place to ride after a rain! So fun
Rocky mountain has a great option available.
Scott Carlon yes I did a small review on it, I really liked the bike. Motor was really good!!
Not the best Ebike I have seen. It is very noisy too
Really noisy
Yes, but it is by far the best electric motor that exists.
Man that footage looks so much better .. so glad u have the hero 7 now.
That inbuilt stabilisation is pretty damn impressive.. Saves motion sickness just watching the video..lol
Really well done video and good riding.
Todd Jacobson thanks man!!
Explore E3+ GTS. Best eMTB made today.
Billy Smith try again not even close
@@FWCaptain-kv6sm +1
I got my first ebike a 2022 giant reign e+ 3
54 lbs ? too heavy. m spz is 21.5 kg
Andre P ya it’s chunky forsure!!
Niceeee 🤙
regenerative braking would be cool... maybe
Curious how much YOU paid for the bike & DID YOU SPEND YOUR OWN MONEY ON THIS BIKE or was it a sponsor that footed the bill?
If you would have mentioned the $7000usd price tag I bet many wouldn't have even watched this....
Grim Reaper I was given the bike for a month unfortunately I have to give it back!! I will miss it 4sure
Grim Reaper had he mentioned this bike was 7K I actually would’ve watched it sooner than later.
@@DAhonda247 yes, $7k pounds or euros = $11k in Canadian funds
@@Bikepark167 AHHH....that makes more sense then...Did you have an option to buy for a heavily discounted price or was it going back regardless? ...I know it'll suck, but if possible next time see if you can get an ENTRY LEVEL bike to review... Seeing the price of this bike at $7000 euro=$10,500cdn or $7000pounds=$12,300cdn takes it out of my reality to buy. I get a 4 to 5 month window to ride here in Canada & can't justify over $10k Canadian for a bike when I won't even be jumping it or going trail riding because of my injuries...I just want a decent, reliable eBike for no more than $7k cdn($5000 pound/ $4500 euro) which hardly ANYONE reviews!
Grim Reaper that makes total sense, I am gonna try a Commencal here soon, they are 4999.00 usd they are really well built up bikes also.
People were right, that is a noisy motor on that giant lol
Get off my lawn ! LOL The guy sounds just like me but with me a little bit more emphasis on the word LAWN .
Like the hottie comment! God bless you and your family Aloha
Next time bring earplugs.
...are they all so damn noisy?
JAFO this particular Giant is the noisiest, the new giant Reign Ebike is way quieter, and the Levo from specialized is silent.
@@Bikepark167 I almost bought a Levo the other day.
JAFO get a 2020 the 18-19 Levo motors have tons of issues
@@Bikepark167 Really, I wasn't aware. What's the fix?
@@Bikepark167 do the 2020 Levo and Kenevo motors have less issues. I've read some horror stories about guys replacing up to 6 motors in less than a year. That's nuts for the price they charge on their bikes
That bike is super noisy. I don't think I could enjoy the ride as much because of that loud distraction. The bike looks good, Giant is using Orbea's colors.
its loud for sure.. the 2020 is suppose to be much more quiter
Noisy motor?!
Pwx or Bosch
good question, both great motors, for some reason the Yamaha is much louder. but I am really happy with it.
I love my Yamaha. For me it’s better than the Bosch, and more energy efficient on top of that.
The emtb mode on the Bosch is nice though.
I’d say : ride both and make your own decision
I'd stay clear of the weight discussion. We're still in the first tier of EMTB emergence. Afterall, 44 pound bike being touted as the lightest is not so great given a Walmart ebike comes in at a close second at 47 pounds, more watts, and only $700....
Manual is way better when it comes to fat burning while pedaling.
Jonathan Vasquez how do you know that for a fact? I had a trainer work with me and we used a heart monitor and the Ebike kept you in the fat burning stage longer if you ride it hard and fast! If you ride it easy then yes I agree, but the manual bike in steep climbs puts your heart in the red and no fat burning is going on. They are both good I use both for optimal fitness!!
*A bit challenging to clean.*
Howmuch
Yamaha power!
Tires ain't busted giant rock
Who would really want a progressive suspension? 🤨 you make it sound like a bad thing 😄
Having a linear (consistent) is by far much better especially for DH riding. And you could always change out to the best, an Öhlins TTX 22m 👍
I like the bike to feel active, what I was getting at is it didn't have any feel. The bike was riding like an old Cadillac, which would be great if I was plowing some chunky down hill but I like to feel the bike get active in turns little hits and all sorts of fun stuff. But I agree, DH linear is much smoother and more control. thanks for watching
A perfect bike for the old folks or those awaiting knee replacements.
Specialized 29er for someone that doesn’t ride that’s quite an opinion haha
completely ignorant comment man, im 27 and own this beast , as i cant drive an Motor Vehicle for some time … ive put around 3000 miles on it in 8 months , use it for a 3min drive to work and do lots of trail here in switzerland , i got a mx/enduro background by work and got with this ebike into bycycles and spent a small fortune on it. without this e-engine and satisfaction of climbing anything i guess i wouldnt cycle at all , i use the minimum assistance regularly and do unrestricted and easy 30miles on it with with a 38t chainring and get about 65miles of autonomy. any bike is cool and have its own good aspects therefore each to our own. the giant bike is Pretty heavy but gives excellent stability , i dont mind the weight at all.
Dirtbags don’t drive around in brand new sprinters or ride fresh bikes
Cannondale2019 only in Cali!!
@@Bikepark167 you wish you were a dirtbag far from it
Cannondale2019 I don’t wish I was anything!! Haha I do what I want when I want how I want.
Bikepark167 you’re the far from being a dirtbag. You look queaky clean no dirt to be seen
No Specialized Expert is #1 Giant isn't even close
Cannondale2019 that’s a great opinion
The 2019 Expert is the lightest ebike. The Giant is a good bike but Specialized nailed it with the Levo Expert.
@@FWCaptain-kv6sm How much does it cost?
Don Olinger. 10can. they’re all sold out. Giants are a dime a dozen.
That bird nest of cables is embarrassing. Your buddy's laugh is farking annoying too.
B Franco right on I will let him know! Lol
After a lot of researching, I bought the Giant Trance 3 and love it. Did a little review here - ua-cam.com/video/y9O6GHqtRow/v-deo.html 😄👍
Bikes fuckn badAzzz
All I could hear was the motor my kenevo is very quiet.. nice bike tho
Don’t just trust. Obey Jesus loud forsure!!
Something isnt right with the motor noise. I had a trance e+2 and it wasnt loud at all. Currently waiting for a levo as giant having rectified issues with bike turning itself on and off when some of their bikes get wet. Happened on my first ride. Great bike other yhan that and better spec for lower price than levos
P G I agree I’m gonna have it checked seems extra loud to me!
@@Bikepark167 What did you find out about the noise? Ima get me a E+2 this year to go along with my ancient Sugar. The Sugar and Classic Santa Cruz are timeless X/C designs.
Christopher King seems like a lot of the noise is from the chain guide, when it gets dirty it rubs, I adjusted it and it sounds better. Still louder motor than a Levo but my buddy has a new Commencal and the shimano was just as loud.
Bro how do u know that it’s the best ebike u haven’t even tried 1/4 of the ebikes in the world so don’t go bragging when u really don’t know anything about ebikes
3 Demons did you even watch the video? It’s my favorite Ebike I ridden at the time. That video is old also!!
Bikepark167 we have the most advanced ebike in the world if ur trying to brag
It seems to have some positives but that constant whinnying noise would drive me crazy. Negates everything for me sorry 👎👎
Mark Hockey I hear ya, it was mostly the chain guard I found out, but motor is way louder than specialized forsure. But. It as bad as the video shows, after adjusting chain guard it’s about half as loud
Bikepark167 I’ve been out riding with a few Yamaha driven eBikes & I’m sorry but even half as loud just destroyed the peaceful ride through the forests.
Mark Hockey peaceful rides should be on a regular bike lol
turbo levo is better
Noisy
When these big ebike companies want to join the club and start making bikes with more than 500 Watts nominal then you can make claims like best electric bike. These bikes have great frames but that’s about it. The electric portion sucks balls.
This looks very dangerous
No, Giant didn’t make the best ebike ever. At that weight, price point, and motor noise, absolutely not. Getting the bike for a T&E and then writing a clickbait glowing review is furthest from an honest review. TF outta here with your nonsense.
John Smith haters gonna hate!
heavy, noisy, ugly. not the best
Can we stop with the e-bike foolishness!!!
AUDI RWB it’s here to stay! Pedal bikes are gonna be like old bikes with no suspension.
" Ebike foolishness " ?? 😂
That statement exposes your youth. I've been riding since the 1950s and then when i reached seventy and couldn't get up the hills no matter how fit i was i quit riding. Then i discovered E bikes and am active again.
You will change your mind when you become an old coot like me . 😂
Sirios Star or when you just want more fun!!
@@siriosstar4789 I'm 80 and I can still climb all the hills(I work out every day so that helps)on my Scott Genius 720 Carbon.. However, I have tried the e-bike and I am defintely going to buy one. I can go much further in a day and still get a great workout. I had a Giant(Stance E 2 Pro...I think..about $4,800.00)for a day to try and I thought it was a really good value. I have ridden several brands and I think I will go with the Bulls E-Stream Evo AM 4 or the Bulls E-Core Evo EN Di 27.5. Nice bikes and have the long range batteries..plus the E-Stream 4 has the Brose S mag motor.
One old coot to another.
That's fantastic that you are still so fit. There are a lot of high quality e bikes for a lot less than $4800. I have a cube hard tail with bosch cx motor 500 watt battery , shimano brakes and rear derailer etc. for 2500 € . Haibike is also a great bike for the money . Hope you find something you like . keep riding!
