Can You Beat Fallout 4 Without A Pip-Boy? (in text form)
The first thing to think about is SPECIAL stats. It takes time to level up and assign more points into SPECIAL down the line to get access to certain perks. And this is where I first screwed up. I assumed I’d be stuck with my fists as my only weapons, so I put 9 points into Strength and Agility, and put the rest in Endurance. The Great War began, I rushed to the vault, got frozen, then thawed out, then froze again before waking up and beginning the adventure of a lifetime. I got the 10mm Pistol and it was automatically equipped, something I forgot about. Putting all those points into Strength may have been a mistake. Oh well, I’m not going back.
There it is, the vault door. You might be thinking that I’m going to use console commands to just remove the Pip-Boy after escaping the vault. I got 2 words for ya: Flip. That. We don’t need the Pip-Boy to escape. We just need our old friend cone. Pick up an object, back yourself into a wall, look down, and start jumping. If you do it right, you’ll start sliding up the wall. It took me about 30 minutes to do this. Eventually, you’ll line up just right and will clip over the vault door. After that, you’re home free.
Fresh out of the vault, my first stop was at Sanctuary to use the You’re Special book and talk to Codsworth. Before I left the vault, I noticed a few things. 1) You don’t need a Pip-Boy to use Stimpaks or Radaway. They’re set to specific keys. Bring up your Pip-Boyless arm, press a button, and you’re healed. 2) The 10mm Pistol is automatically favorited, so you can swap between unarmed and the Pistol on the fly.
By now, I found Dogmeat, who will be my item mule for the foreseeable future, and moseyed my way to Concord, where the Minutemen were being picked off like fish in a barrel. I dealt with the Raiders, picked up the Fusion Core, and went up to the roof. I used the Power Armor to pick up the Minigun, then exited the Power Armor. With the Minigun automatically equipped, I could use it to make quick work of the remaining Raiders as well as the Deathclaw. Dogmeat went and made a mess of himself, but he recovered. I spoke to Preston and made sure the Minutemen would be at Sanctuary Hills.
You might be wondering why the game looks a little barren. It’s not a mod. The only mod I have increases the amount of blood. Several months ago, I was playing around with Fallout 4’s .ini file. One of the things I did while in that file was disable grass. So, that’s why it looks the way it does. Moving on, without a map, I made an educated guess as to where Diamond City was. I was actually looking for Park Street Station so I could rescue Nick Valentine. I’d have settled for either of them. Well, I took a wrong turn or something because I wound up in the Glowing Sea. Don’t waste your time asking how the flipper I got so far off track, because I have no idea.
A not insignificant amount of time later, I was inside the city proper. Not Diamond City. Heavens no, that’s still a ways off. I encountered Brother Simon, who led me into a trap. I wasn’t about to hand over all my stuff, so I killed him and all of his followers, expending all of my ammo in the process. The good news is that, unlike Fallout New Vegas, you can bash people with your gun, which sometimes gives a really satisfying animation.

Not gonna lie, I was pretty adamant about not installing fast travel mods until I started doing the Nuka World questline and had to experience that train cutscene like 10 more times just to turn in Shank's quests.

I was playing the other day and Preston said a settlement needs my help as I was opening my pipboy and it crashed
Uh, Preston? He can't find the settlement if he doesn't have a Pip-Boy. And also, I denied your first request to help a settlement because I'd need WAAAAY more fusion cores for my power armour to clear out the raiders from the Corvega assembly plant. I can't do it with only Piper, some (noobish) armour, a 10mm pistol that's not modified AT ALL, and a low capacity(two crank) lazer musket with no modifications that only han ONE cell. You know I got that suit of T45 power armour from on top of the old museum. I'm not even strong enough to lift that minigun, ALONE, I neeeeed the power armour, Preston, I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED it.
So no more helping settlements, or I won't join the Minutemen.

@Bolt_action_sent-to-god Yeah he passed away sadly, I think it was either Pancreatitis from his issues with Alcoholism or I think his brother publicly confirmed he accidently suffocated on his pillow after he passed out drunk.
It's really sad man, I used to watch this guy all the time, he was a great UA-camr and even when he was suffering he still made people laugh.

This was always one of my favorites. Rest in peace man.
If you open the "pip-boy" in a power armor it opens the pip-boy menu without actually opening the pip-boy itself. This grants you all the advantages of the pip-boy without actually using it.

Nice. But doesn't getting into a power armor give your pipboy back? I tried a similar run using the vault 111 skip and the pipboy appeared after entering/exiting a power armor. Great video.

"Not using" a Pip-Boy isn't much of a challenge when the game gives you 90% of the functionality of one even if you don't pick one up.
Really though. He did have access to everything he picked up, even the guns. Kind of a shitty episode of this whole thing, really.

You know you could have just picked up the baton in the vault, and got a melee weapon for free?
He also didn’t need to use the power armour to get the mini gun since his strength was at 9, which is more than enough to pick it up without needing the armour
That thing on your wrist - it's a convenience. It tells you where to go, what to do, dulls your brain.
It may have helped you find the Sierra Madre broadcast, but it's just as much a crutch today as it was in the Old World.

Everyone thinks this. *You* cannot equip items in the companion "Trade" UI. You equip items onto *them*. It's been tried. Just accept that you're wrong.
… He could've used power armor, it has a built in computer and its technically not the pip boy because you dont put your arm up to access your inventory.
you'd need a lot of fusion cores, which would take up a lot more excess time...

i mean... youre not wrong
there's actually a ton of little tricks you can do that we do/know about in the speedrunning community to make this challenge much easier. the first is that stimpaks are by default bound to 0 so you dont need to pull up the invis pipboy to use them lol.
also, during this run you actually did have a pipboy, fun fact. when you leave vault 111 without picking up the pipboy, the game automatically gives you it, except its just invisible. you can easily browse through your inventory and equip things if you know item locations inside of the pipboy. you can actually turn your invisible pipboy to visible if you make a save and reload it from the main menu. the thing about this though is that the screen will be dirty because you will have the textures of the pipboy from before picking it up, since you never brushed off the screen since you never picked it up. also you can entirely circumvent fast travelling by using a glitch called loadwarping, which brings you to locations you make hard saves at with your current character. in all, fun and entertaining video.

Vats IS using the pip boy, unless you subscribe to the theory that the player characters a synth. And after the wire you pulled out of your skin it’s lookin p plausible
You can use vats before you pick up the pipboy anyway. It's either the survivor is a synth or it's the games way of showing that he has military training (or is the laywer wife of someone with military training 😂). Or, the most plausible, Bethesda simply didn't think it that far ahead.

@@BartyBud Yea it just makes it inconsistent with other things which sadly just proves they didn't put that much thought into it. Like the ss telling Dima that his earliest memories are from the day the bombs fell, but actually he talks about older memories a bunch of times throughout the game.

You could have gotten the Security Baton as well, it also auto equips... Would have made melee easier and used your strength.
If you use a follower I believe you can equip your items from their inventory
I dont think that's posible... It only allows you to equip them.
