My ancient Panasonic,12 years old and well used refused to recognise any blank disc and never passed muster on FORMAT tried all manner of discs and decided that as it had rendered itself useless I would try these tricks.
I now have a fully working and very clean DMR- Ex 768 and looks like it may last another 12 years hopefully.
    Incredible ! Thank you miliions

What would you think about cleaning the glides of old gunk, with rubbing alcohol, before applying the new silicon oil?

Nice work! I have an old Magnavox MWD7006 DVD Player that wouldn't read any disk. Cleaning, massaging and oiling the Laser Guide Mechanism did the trick. 👍 The laser guide was bound up pretty good prior to. Inside was pretty clean. I expected pet hair and a lot of dust but was surprised at how clean it was. Maybe it had seized up from a period of non use.

I am surprised that since you mentioned about a bench rubber mat that you did not wear an ESD wrist strap. Do you know of any manufacturers that make ANGLED needle nose pliers that have removable protective covers to aid in removing and installing ribbon cables ? They would be a good aid to keep the cables safe from damage.

Thank you sir, for uploading this video ; much informative with cool practical demonstration. Unlike most other vdos, it's not been made in haste but with step by step tutorial alongwith your comprehendible narration. I've saved it for future need. May, I ask you to upload a vdo regarding 'the lense cleaning'. Would you be kind enough to tell me, whether the 'lense section', of a dvd player, consists of 2 separate lenses or a single one. Take Care and Stay Blessed. Namaste 🙏🏽.

Thank you! I've got my drive working with this method :D I didn't use the proper lubricant, but a different one intended for a weedwhacker. I don't know how good that is for this application, but I only need it to work today.

Thanks for posting. Good commentary and camera angle. However, once you had removed the cover there was easy access to both the laser and glide rods.
Some machines have different designs and are not easy to DIY. My Panasonic, for example, has the laser assembly in an enclosed plastic case which I’m told was ‘plastic welded’ together when it was made.
The only way I could get access was by gently prising off the spindle and metal disc washer, which I don’t think is the approved way.
Even then I couldn’t access the glide rods. But the laser could just be reached by putting in a Q Tip at an angle. Very dirty, actually.
A guy at a Panasonic store told me that it could also be a slightly warped disc tray at fault whereby the disc won’t sit plum in it’s seat.

Not really my problem... have a Panasonic DVD Recorder that won't recognize certain DVD-R blanks... It will read blankds I had ordered a few years back, but the new ones, it just won't. I have tried several kinds now and it doesn't want to work, even from the same manufacture... just won't work... I justed another older Memorex again, works like a charm... scratching my head... Have ordered some DVD-RWs to see what happens there. I'm not trying DVD+Rs either. It didn't like one I had...
