This course delves deep into the intriguing question of whether Jesus of Nazareth was connected to, influenced by, or familiar with the Jewish sect responsible for writing the Dead Sea Scrolls. By centering our investigation around this central issue, we will embark on an exploration of a wide range of related topics, shedding light on the historical and theological context of the time. Through in-depth analysis, discussion, and examination of primary sources, we will seek to uncover the potential connections and influences that shaped the religious landscape of the ancient Judean world.
This course comes down to a single issue: Was Jesus connected to, familiar with, or in any ways influenced by, the Jewish sect who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls? And around this central focus we will explore a whole variety of related topics, such as:
What are the Dead Sea scrolls?
How were the Dead Sea Scrolls discovered, dated, and interpreted early on?
Were the Essenes the group responsible for writing the Dead Sea Scrolls?
Who were the Essenes and what were their beliefs?
Was John the Baptist likely connected to the DSS (Dead Sea Scrolls) group?
Are there close similarities between the Jesus movement and the DSS group-how many and how significant?
What about sharp differences between the Jesus movement and the DSS group?
If the movement lasted until the Jewish Roman War in 66-73CE, was it possible that the Jesus movement and the DSS group had knowledge of each other?
How different are the Pharisees and the Sadducees from the DSS group and the Jesus movement?
And so much more...
In this course, our primary focus is on a direct engagement with the Dead Sea Scroll texts. Our emphasis is not on delving into theories about the group but rather on a meticulous examination of the content within the Scrolls themselves. By the conclusion of this course, you will have gained a profound understanding of the fundamental aspects necessary to embark on more in-depth explorations in the realm of biblical studies.

This course does sound awesome. I've signed up, but have yet to roll my sleeves up and get into it. Looking forward to it.
I finished the Dead Sea Scrolls course. It’s the single best introduction on the subject I’ve come across. It’s ambitious and somewhat broad in scope. Anyone can follow along, regardless of their background. James has a very polished teaching style and an unmatched passion for the material. He loves this stuff and he’ll make you feel the same. This is the second course I’ve taken from him, and each time I’m disappointed there isn’t more. I’m left wanting a deeper dive. I’m left wanting to learn how he and other scholars approach texts, so I can learn the same critical skills they have. I hope there is more to come, and I hope he’ll peel back some of those layers and continue to let us into his world. I also want a course with more formalized homework. That’s how much he’s messed with my head and fired me up about this stuff. I’m just a nobody who is grateful to participate in whatever this becomes. I’m grateful to James caring enough about people like us, who wish they had the chance to go to school for this stuff, learning from people like him. Thank you. It means a lot to me.

The Spirit of Error teaches Jesus is God who came in the flesh.
2 John 1:7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those not acknowledging Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.
The Spirit of Truth teaches Jesus Christ came in the flesh.
Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter answered: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 In response Jesus said to him: “Happy you are, Simon son of Joʹnah, because flesh and blood did not reveal it to you, but my Father in the heavens did. 18 Also, I say to you: You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my congregation, and the gates of the Grave will not overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of the heavens, and whatever you may bind on earth will already be bound in the heavens, and whatever you may loosen on earth will already be loosened in the heavens.” 20 Then he sternly instructed the disciples not to tell anybody that he was the Christ.
This is so great Dr. Tabor, and I can't thank you enough for what you do for all of us, I love learning from you! Please don't quit. The world needs this, we need to talk about these things and study and learn and grow! Your absolutely amazing and your work is so important to us all. Thank you Dr.
I love this movement towards public scholarship. Thank you.
Even though the dead sea scrolls aren't directly related to the Christian tradition, as those aren't accepted by any of the historical churches, still those scrolls would be a major evidence that Christianity is the continuation of Essene-Judaism, assuming that those scrolls are authentic and belonged to the Essenes.
James Tabor is a treasure and this platform does him a great honor to get his course and insights spread far and wide. Keep up the good work, Derek. I think I speak for most here to welcome the new scholarly reformation movement.
I'm taking the course now and it's exciting. I highly recommend it.
Hello, this convo raised a lot of questions and a bit of confusion as regards to certain scriptures that Doc brings up. I truly wish you have a zoom meeting for this as well. Lol Interesting topic
The Dead Sea Scrolls were written 200 years before Jesus. Do you mean OT scripture?
A relationship between the teachings of the gospels and the DDS is evident and undeniable. This is not Zeitgeist. The similarities are right there in the available manuscripts. This deserves some serious attention, and deserves many different thinking minds to put forth new theories about their connections. Whether believer or nonbeliever, anybody who’s interested in the roots of biblical ideas should also be curious about the ideas that preceded it and possibly aided in its development. Not enough attention is given to this amazing discovery. Thank you for putting together this stimulating course
A profound teaching which every student of the New Testament should listen to.

You see Derek, the powers that be are telling you you are on the right path by the way those who you have contact with, praise what you are doing. The religion, which we critique and challenge, tells us that God Works In Mysterious Ways; well, I think that this goes far, far, beyond even, what those within the faith may comprehend. My Best. This my brother the host always searching for truth.
He talks about these characters like James and John speaking to Jesus as if these events really transpired. Very humorous.
The episode of their asking Jesus if they could sit on his right and on his left and his reply is actually foreboding of his crucifiction.

He's...he's parallelling the Jesus tradition with the Dead Sea Scrolls tradition and suggesting that the former derived from the latter directly.
To do that you kinda need to engage with the stories.
Tabor is great!
Josephus was trying to take them over, as a high priest of a different sect, he was trying to infiltrate them and submit his scrolls while ripping up the Essenes scrolls.
I love the concept of the Way.
no doubt! The Way opens the imagination to all sorts of possibilities. This gerbil isn't interested in the wheel. Studying nonsense is such a waste of the mind except for those seeking an escape to another world.

Taoism/daoism(The Way), is one of the greatest gifts to mankind.
Not a religion, but an intimate understanding of the underlying existential principles of reality.
There's an interesting book of Taoism through an Eastern Orthodox Christianity lense that's really interesting too.
It basically takes the primordial Tao and applies it to Jesus.
The idea is that if perfect Tao, or Logos, was to become a person to show you The Way, that would be Jesus.
Whether he's actually the Son of God is another story, but it is very enlightening to conceptualize and consider these types of things.
Because even if no religion is true, there is a "Way".
A singularity of existence that underpins all reality and reveals it's flow to us.
And that's encouraging 😊

The dead sea scrolls are a collection of human thought in writing for those who are interested in ancient Hebrew culture. Sadly there is no mention of Yahweh's famous son, Jesus, who was drawing huge crowds to hear his sermons 40 miles away.
And 150 years later
The Gospels was written after Jerusalem was destroyed. The Apostles were writing letters to the congregations before the Gospels was written. Because after the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD. The Jewish practice of animal sacrifices ended when the Romans destroyed the temple in Jerusalem. With the temple gone, there is no longer a place for the sacrifices to be offered according to the Mosaic Law. Did they make the Gospels up because they had no temple no more. No they didn't. The Gospels are proof of Jesus. The need for animal sacrifices no longer existed, for Christ had fulfilled the righteous requirements of the Law (Matthew 5:17). Animal sacrifices were merely a type of the perfect Sacrifice-the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). The sacrifice of Christ paid the debt of sin for all mankind, both Jew and Gentile (Romans 1:16; Hebrews 9:12-15).
John was an eyewitness to Jesus and the destruction of Jerusalem and he received Revelation for the congregations of Christ!
The First of John
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have observed and our hands have felt, concerning the word of life, 2 (yes, the life was made manifest, and we have seen and are bearing witness and reporting to you the everlasting life that was with the Father and was made manifest to us), 3 that which we have seen and heard we are reporting also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us. And this fellowship of ours is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

But Mark gets it wrong. In the Greek, “Prepare” is capitalized, as if the voice is in the wilderness, instead of the preparation.
I would love to join the course and ask him about Eisenman's hypothesis that the DSS are actually about the Jesus movement and not from a previous group. I know he does not agree with that but would love to listen to him talking about it.
Was there a reason people hung out around the Dead Sea? Did the Dead Sea provide some kind of a living back then?

Tabor describes a scenario in which he gets into a taxi in Tel-Aviv and the cabbie immediately refers to him as "Doctor Tabor." How did the cabbie know his name and title? Does Tabor where a name tag? Was the cabbie a prophet? Or is Tabor a celebrity throughout Israel, like Gal Gadot?
Does the course explain this???
Could the Qumran community have been the "144,000" in the book of Revelation, as they are described as the ones who have not been defiled [by relations] with women, for they are celibate? They were purchased (ransomed, redeemed) from the earth. (killed?) No lie was found in their mouth, for they are blameless (spotless, untainted, beyond reproach). This verse in Revelation 7:16 sounds like these are people who lived in the desert. "They will hunger no longer, nor thirst anymore; nor will the sun beat down on them, nor any scorching heat."

Isn’t Yahweh, Jehovah, the desert demon of the Israelites?? Why would anyone think of him as anything greater than that?
Yahweh is from the Samaritans. John 4:22 Samaritans had their own temple! Within the region of Samaria, in the city of Sychar, was Jacob’s well. This was the location of Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman, who asked, “Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” (John 4:12). Later in the conversation, she brought up a centuries-old controversy: “Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem” (verse 20). “This mountain” is a reference to Mount Gerizim in the central Samaritan highlands, the place where the Samaritans had built their own temple, which they considered the true temple of God. John 4:22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation begins with the Jews.
It's the other way around. They wouldn't exist without Jesus... He is the Creator in the flesh.
His flesh got nailed to a planks of wood & screamed his father had forsaken him. He created nothing.
@@johnmichaelson9173 Getting killed on the cross was the plan. Only God himself can take on the world's sins and live. The Bible clearly tells us that Jesus is the Creator Himself in the flesh.

The book of Acts is fiction. It is rewriting the history of the Essenes and Qumran but as a successful movement. Just as the Gospels rewrote Josephus's Jesus Bar Ananus story.
Bar Ananus was a different man from the Nazarene even Josephus acknowledged that.

This is groundbreaking to you? Wow
Jesus hail Zeus never existed except as Julius Caesar.
That's hilarious if you know that the suffix on Iezious ("E A ZOOS"), the name that evolved into "Jesus" refers DIRECTLY to Zeus, which is both the name of THE god of the Greeks and a generic title for God.
Yahweh is from the Samaritans. John 4:22 Samaritans had their own temple! Within the region of Samaria, in the city of Sychar, was Jacob’s well. John 4:22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation begins with the Jews.
The word they have transliterated from YHVH as “Yahweh” is actually a Samaritan word and pronunciation. Not a Hebrew word at all. This is why it does not fit Hebrew naming and language rules. Although it is also the way Jupiter is said in ancient Roman Latin, it entered into religion from Samaria and the Samaritan faith.
With all that said, and still, no Jesus.

Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand
How highly we must think of ourselves if we think we have any power over Jesus being here or not? He doesn't need us like the way we need him.
You need a course in REALITY
Prove he existed as a supernatural being. I'm willing to believe an apocalyptic preacher existed but we have no evidence he was supernatural or a miracle worker. His family didn't believe in him and they knew him best. We have no sources outside the bible saying he did anything miraculous.
@@GameTimeWhy the entire story is fabricated! Its quite easy to see that by simply reading the gospels themselves.
@@rasunsoter the entirety of it being fabricated is not a claim I've seen any scholar make because that doesn't have evidence to support it. That some of the mundane stories are true is not an unusual claim.
How highly you must think of yourself if your need for jesus translates to other people needing jesus. It's just means you're needy & that's it.
The Big Problem with denying Christianity or saying that it is only a myth (and apply that to any other organized religious belief system) is that you now have put all the weight on your own shoulders to create your own alternative absolute truth and the statistical likelihood your alternative is correct is very very very very small and likely impossible to reach with certainty before you die. Thus, it is probably just better to be an atheist and not believe in any type of creator or organized religious or philosophical belief system. I know atheism is a secular belief system and can't be proved accurate and true by observation and the scientific method, but one should either believe in a creator or not believe in a creator. It is better to be hot or cold than luke warm and in the middle of all the possible alternatives. For that reasoning, I choose to believe in Christianity.
You are so wrong, so mistaken. There is no need to “create” an absolute truth. That’s the problem in the first place. Creating things when fact is not known. There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying “I don’t know.” In fact, saying anything else is being dishonest. Certainly we should not be creating religions, doctrines, ceremonies, etc. on “I don’t know.” To tell people they're doomed to Hell and eternal torture if they don't believe in Jesus is not only vile but it's extremely dishonest. When you proclaim a faith in any religion you are implying that you know or that it is known. That is disingenuous and dishonest. After all, who proclaims things to be true that are not evidently so? Only a dishonest person does that. Again, there is nothing wrong with saying "I don't know."
Amen Jesus is The Way.
Atheism is not a secular belief ‘system’. There is no system.
