This course delves deep into the intriguing question of whether Jesus of Nazareth was connected to, influenced by, or familiar with the Jewish sect responsible for writing the Dead Sea Scrolls. By centering our investigation around this central issue, we will embark on an exploration of a wide range of related topics, shedding light on the historical and theological context of the time. Through in-depth analysis, discussion, and examination of primary sources, we will seek to uncover the potential connections and influences that shaped the religious landscape of the ancient Judean world.
This course comes down to a single issue: Was Jesus connected to, familiar with, or in any ways influenced by, the Jewish sect who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls? And around this central focus we will explore a whole variety of related topics, such as:
What are the Dead Sea scrolls?
How were the Dead Sea Scrolls discovered, dated, and interpreted early on?
Were the Essenes the group responsible for writing the Dead Sea Scrolls?
Who were the Essenes and what were their beliefs?
Was John the Baptist likely connected to the DSS (Dead Sea Scrolls) group?
Are there close similarities between the Jesus movement and the DSS group-how many and how significant?
What about sharp differences between the Jesus movement and the DSS group?
If the movement lasted until the Jewish Roman War in 66-73CE, was it possible that the Jesus movement and the DSS group had knowledge of each other?
How different are the Pharisees and the Sadducees from the DSS group and the Jesus movement?
    And so much more...
In this course, our primary focus is on a direct engagement with the Dead Sea Scroll texts. Our emphasis is not on delving into theories about the group but rather on a meticulous examination of the content within the Scrolls themselves. By the conclusion of this course, you will have gained a profound understanding of the fundamental aspects necessary to embark on more in-depth explorations in the realm of biblical studies.
Lecture One: Overview of the Discovery-When, Where, and What?

I finished the Dead Sea Scrolls course. It’s the single best introduction on the subject I’ve come across. It’s ambitious and somewhat broad in scope. Anyone can follow along, regardless of their background. James has a very polished teaching style and an unmatched passion for the material. He loves this stuff and he’ll make you feel the same. This is the second course I’ve taken from him, and each time I’m disappointed there isn’t more. I’m left wanting a deeper dive. I’m left wanting to learn how he and other scholars approach texts, so I can learn the same critical skills they have. I hope there is more to come, and I hope he’ll peel back some of those layers and continue to let us into his world. I also want a course with more formalized homework. That’s how much he’s messed with my head and fired me up about this stuff. I’m just a nobody who is grateful to participate in whatever this becomes. I’m grateful to James caring enough about people like us, who wish they had the chance to go to school for this stuff, learning from people like him. Thank you. It means a lot to me.

The Spirit of Error teaches Jesus is God who came in the flesh.
2 John 1:7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those not acknowledging Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.
The Spirit of Truth teaches Jesus Christ came in the flesh.
Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter answered: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 In response Jesus said to him: “Happy you are, Simon son of Joʹnah, because flesh and blood did not reveal it to you, but my Father in the heavens did. 18 Also, I say to you: You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my congregation, and the gates of the Grave will not overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of the heavens, and whatever you may bind on earth will already be bound in the heavens, and whatever you may loosen on earth will already be loosened in the heavens.” 20 Then he sternly instructed the disciples not to tell anybody that he was the Christ.

Even though the dead sea scrolls aren't directly related to the Christian tradition, as those aren't accepted by any of the historical churches, still those scrolls would be a major evidence that Christianity is the continuation of Essene-Judaism, assuming that those scrolls are authentic and belonged to the Essenes.

A relationship between the teachings of the gospels and the DDS is evident and undeniable. This is not Zeitgeist. The similarities are right there in the available manuscripts. This deserves some serious attention, and deserves many different thinking minds to put forth new theories about their connections. Whether believer or nonbeliever, anybody who’s interested in the roots of biblical ideas should also be curious about the ideas that preceded it and possibly aided in its development. Not enough attention is given to this amazing discovery. Thank you for putting together this stimulating course

Taoism/daoism(The Way), is one of the greatest gifts to mankind.
Not a religion, but an intimate understanding of the underlying existential principles of reality.
There's an interesting book of Taoism through an Eastern Orthodox Christianity lense that's really interesting too.
It basically takes the primordial Tao and applies it to Jesus.
The idea is that if perfect Tao, or Logos, was to become a person to show you The Way, that would be Jesus.
Whether he's actually the Son of God is another story, but it is very enlightening to conceptualize and consider these types of things.
Because even if no religion is true, there is a "Way".
A singularity of existence that underpins all reality and reveals it's flow to us.
      And that's encouraging 😊

The Gospels was written after Jerusalem was destroyed. The Apostles were writing letters to the congregations before the Gospels was written. Because after the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD. The Jewish practice of animal sacrifices ended when the Romans destroyed the temple in Jerusalem. With the temple gone, there is no longer a place for the sacrifices to be offered according to the Mosaic Law. Did they make the Gospels up because they had no temple no more. No they didn't. The Gospels are proof of Jesus. The need for animal sacrifices no longer existed, for Christ had fulfilled the righteous requirements of the Law (Matthew 5:17). Animal sacrifices were merely a type of the perfect Sacrifice-the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). The sacrifice of Christ paid the debt of sin for all mankind, both Jew and Gentile (Romans 1:16; Hebrews 9:12-15).
John was an eyewitness to Jesus and the destruction of Jerusalem and he received Revelation for the congregations of Christ!
      The First of John
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have observed and our hands have felt, concerning the word of life, 2 (yes, the life was made manifest, and we have seen and are bearing witness and reporting to you the everlasting life that was with the Father and was made manifest to us), 3 that which we have seen and heard we are reporting also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us. And this fellowship of ours is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

Could the Qumran community have been the "144,000" in the book of Revelation, as they are described as the ones who have not been defiled [by relations] with women, for they are celibate? They were purchased (ransomed, redeemed) from the earth. (killed?) No lie was found in their mouth, for they are blameless (spotless, untainted, beyond reproach). This verse in Revelation 7:16 sounds like these are people who lived in the desert. "They will hunger no longer, nor thirst anymore; nor will the sun beat down on them, nor any scorching heat."

Yahweh is from the Samaritans. John 4:22 Samaritans had their own temple! Within the region of Samaria, in the city of Sychar, was Jacob’s well. This was the location of Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman, who asked, “Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” (John 4:12). Later in the conversation, she brought up a centuries-old controversy: “Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem” (verse 20). “This mountain” is a reference to Mount Gerizim in the central Samaritan highlands, the place where the Samaritans had built their own temple, which they considered the true temple of God. John 4:22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation begins with the Jews.

The word they have transliterated from YHVH as “Yahweh” is actually a Samaritan word and pronunciation. Not a Hebrew word at all. This is why it does not fit Hebrew naming and language rules. Although it is also the way Jupiter is said in ancient Roman Latin, it entered into religion from Samaria and the Samaritan faith.

The Big Problem with denying Christianity or saying that it is only a myth (and apply that to any other organized religious belief system) is that you now have put all the weight on your own shoulders to create your own alternative absolute truth and the statistical likelihood your alternative is correct is very very very very small and likely impossible to reach with certainty before you die. Thus, it is probably just better to be an atheist and not believe in any type of creator or organized religious or philosophical belief system. I know atheism is a secular belief system and can't be proved accurate and true by observation and the scientific method, but one should either believe in a creator or not believe in a creator. It is better to be hot or cold than luke warm and in the middle of all the possible alternatives. For that reasoning, I choose to believe in Christianity.

    • @mnamhie
      @mnamhie Рік тому +12

You are so wrong, so mistaken. There is no need to “create” an absolute truth. That’s the problem in the first place. Creating things when fact is not known. There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying “I don’t know.” In fact, saying anything else is being dishonest. Certainly we should not be creating religions, doctrines, ceremonies, etc. on “I don’t know.” To tell people they're doomed to Hell and eternal torture if they don't believe in Jesus is not only vile but it's extremely dishonest. When you proclaim a faith in any religion you are implying that you know or that it is known. That is disingenuous and dishonest. After all, who proclaims things to be true that are not evidently so? Only a dishonest person does that. Again, there is nothing wrong with saying "I don't know."
