For 1,000's of years before we used sequences of 0's and 1's for programming computers, we used sequences of loops for nålbinding and then Knit and Purl for knitting patterns. (BTW the first "punch cards" were developed for machine weaving looms.) Great to see people appreciating how maths is used in textile art!
this is why as someone who has a technical background in my education i especially love knitting as a creative pursuit! it's artistic, but it's also highly technical. what a beautiful thing!
I didn’t realize there was a name for it, but a friend from my Knitting Club was doing a knit 2 purl 2 over an odd number of stitches, and I absolutely love the way it looked.
Yes I agree, ‘mistake knitting’ is sequence knitting. Why oh why doesn’t my mistake knitting come out like that? I guess my mistakes are myriad throughout the project. 😂 Can’t wait for your socks with sequence knitting. Love your ease of chatting like we’re having a cup of tea. Thank you.
New knitter, I’m mean VERY new. I like simple, so sequencing sounds like something up my alley. I’m an experienced crocheter, seamstress, embroiderer, but knitting has alluded me up until today. My closest friend was a master knitter and passed away suddenly. After three years her hubby called and asked if I’d like a bin of her favorite yarns. Talk about a huge blessing. Most are hand dyed, hand spun and a lot are sock yarns. I hate crocheted socks so I stood up to my stubborn non knitting self and said, “you’re gonna learn”. I found a UA-camr teaching long tail casting on, and my journey (finally successful) began. I’ve only finished two projects, but I’m definitely hooked. Funny non accurate pun. Enjoyed your video. I think I understand (after hearing and seeing your description). Thanks for sharing. I feel like the spiral version of sequence knitting would drive me crazy (on my actual legs) due to neuropathy, but in a hat or a flat piece the textures would be awesome. I love experimentation after I master a craft, so once I get there with knitting I see myself doing a deep dive into it!
I have been doing a bit of sock knitting this summer and I immediately started thinking about how sequence knitting might work. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
Love it! learnt to sock knit years ago from your channel and sought out copy of the folk sock book - and now this. Thanks for continuing to share the knowledge👍
It sounds a little bit like what we called "code knitting." That was a kind of combination of weaving design and knitting where you could "code" the letters of the alphabet by assigning them as a k or p stitch. I usually just alternated a = k, b = p, c = k, etc. and fortunately, our alphabet has an even number of letters. Then, you could take a person's name or any words, and "code" each letter with its corresponding stitch and use this as the base unit of the sequence. I usually kept the sequence small so the pattern would become visible sooner in the knitting. Using this technique I knit baby sweaters for my grandchildren in code patterns that spelled their names, and yes, the patterns looked different depending on whether I was knitting straight or in the round.
Well, isn't that a rabbit hole to explore 🐇 Just heard this term "sequence knitting today for the first time, and landed here doing a search. I love your natural presence in your video, thank you for explaining the concept so brilliantly!
I’m a beginner knitter. I’ve not made much, I enjoy making socks. I’ve only done the toe up with Fleegel heel. I do love to learn all I can. Thank you for sharing
Never thought of it before, but "Fruit Stripe Gum Sock" pattern is a form of sequence knitting. Thanks for sharing your new found fun! Love your haircut, by the way!
Hey Jana! I just found a pattern for a cowl on Ravelry using this technique. It is so pretty. It is called Sequence Cowl by Nancy Lekx and it is only $.75 !!!!!
I just heard about Sequence Knitting and the book by Cecilia Campochiaro about three months ago. I haven't tried this yet, but I have lots of cotton and making dishcloths would be a great idea for exploring this technique. Thanks Jana. Edit, new sub here, I can't wait to start a pair of clog slippers.
I’m just recently finding out about sequence knitting and it looks amazing. I think that serpentine sequence may be my first one. Thank you for sharing your experiences with it. ❤
So glad you put this up! I've recently unpicked the bottom of a cardi and done a wavy rib which sounds like what you're talking about, and it's so pretty I'm intending to match the sleeves. But that will be knitting in the round! I hadn't realised I might have to think!
You've inspired me to give this a try, I'm just about ready to start the Move On cowl by Pariser Landluft (free on Ravelry) and the will modify the cast on stitches so that I can do the continuous knitting and am looking forward to seeing the result!
Love your videos - I always learn something new. I, too, am an avid sock knitter and this sounds like a really cool idea. Created my own pattern - always with provisional cast on. Look forward to trying this on my next pair of socks. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, I’ve been watching the sequential knitting. I need to start a new thing in my Pinterest because I have everything is multiples of eight multiples of four you know, etc. now I need just to have a sequential knitting file
I love your enthusiasm and agree it’s really interesting and fun to explore. BTW, I tried the alternative way of SSK (Patty Lyon’s) which you highlighted recently and agree it’s much neater, Many thanks and greetings from Cumbria in the UK.
Funnily enough I also watch Nicoleknits (Canadian knitter) and she was enthusing about sequence knitting. Looks really cool. I’d be interested to see how you apply this to sock knitting Jana. Thanks for sharing 🙋🏼🏴

Another knitting thing to learn! This is why I love to knit.
Thanks for bringing sequence knitting to my attention.
Thank you for a great explanation. Your cat on the top shelf adds extra appeal to the video!
I didn’t realize there was a name for it, but a friend from my Knitting Club was doing a knit 2 purl 2 over an odd number of stitches, and I absolutely love the way it looked.
Cool stuff! Thanks for making me want to drop my current project in the middle and start playing with this. LoL

Mistake stitch ribbing is 'sequence knitting' that a lot of us know - but don't realise is sequence knitting.
Lol😂
This is why I love knitting so much! There is always something new to learn! And sequences for sock...that's brilliant!
Love knitting! Thanks for sharing this sequence knitting! I’ll try this method on some of my dishcloths! Happy knitting!
Thank you
Got my creative juices going again
I love how you explain things so clearly! I signed up for your newsletter halfway tithe video. You are an excellent communicator
Thanks so much!
I have been doing a bit of sock knitting this summer and I immediately started thinking about how sequence knitting might work. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
How fascinating. Such a cool concept! Thank you for sharing❤
OMGosh. How fun. This sounds like something my sister would have been doing. 💖
Love it! learnt to sock knit years ago from your channel and sought out copy of the folk sock book - and now this. Thanks for continuing to share the knowledge👍
I cannot thank you enough. I saw the book and it boggled my math deficient logic. You have cleared it all!!!! Thank you soooo much.
Wow, who knew?! New viewer...learning so much, which i love! Thankyou!🥰❤️🧶

Fantastic idea ! Never thought about such combinations . Thank you very much , great tutorial 👏🏻💖

Oh thank you!
I just received the Sequence Knitting book last week. Loving it. Thank you for your excellent explanations of sequence knitting. ❤
Love Sequence knitting. I have the book and when I’m just in the mood to play, I’ll get it out. Fun!!
I think sequence knitting is so very interesting. I need to try it!

Thanks for sharing. She has a whole series of Sequence cowls!

You make it so clear! Where have you been all my life
I found out about sequence knitting about a month ago. It also intrigued me. I had to purchase the Sequence Knitting book immediately too.

Very intriguing. I keep hearing about it and must try it
Jana, you should check out the book Sequence Knitting by Cecelia Campochiaro! Her study of this concept is absolutely fascinating.
Campocharo was a computer chip designer before she wrote that book-math geeks knitting!
Yep, if you watch the whole video you'll see me hold up her book and talk about it a bit.
First time here...And wow! Brilliant! Thanks for the inspiration.
I can definitely recommend Cacaelia Campocharo’s book on sequence knitting!

Hope you will talk more about it.
Wow!!
This sounds very interesting! Thanks for the links.

Hi
Thank you for sharing, very interesting.
I just love your videos!
I have that book!
Very cool!!!
I think Stephanie Purl McFee’s one row scarf pattern is sequence knitting too and I believe it is a free pattern.
Besides knitting, I’m also a geek of linguistics. The term “neologism” means a made up word that everyone knows what it means. BAZILLION!
I love that! Thanks for sharing that term.
Americans make more new words than anyone else. Love languages. Hey, isn’t bazillion a real word? Autospell put it up as I began typing it!
This is exciting 😃🎉👍
So wonderful!
Waiting for the sock ideas
Brilliant ! Thank you!!
Yes! Sequences for socks!
Thanks for the info. It was great.
For the beanie did you keep ribbing "in pattern" before you did sequence on the remainder of the hat?
If I recall, yes. I followed the Hurricane Hat pattern linked in the video description.
Very interesting!
OMG! Thank you!!!!!
I’m slow and wasn’t getting it. I think that what ur saying is it’s more about texture than pattern. Idk. 😢
Sounds a lot like knit/purl stitch patterns
Yes! Infinite combinations and textures
👍❤️💐
😍🥰🧶😘👍🏼❤️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Okay what is a knit? What is a purl? What is a snitch in knitting?
Very interesting!
