ND filter is not an issue because with 62mm thread just pop on a filter. I was torn between this and RX10 and went with this because autofocus on this compared to RX10 is way faster. It has GH4 processor with a kick ass lens 2.8-4 in 24-400 is awesome. A T5i with two lenses is comparable price but the lenses can't compare with what Panasonic put on this. I just wish it was manual zoom vs electronic zoom to feel a bit more like SLR. I got this for a trip to India because I didn't want to carry so much gear. I wanted an all in one solution with a half decent sensor. So far I'm impressed with it!

Great review. My FZ1000 will be delivered later today and I can't wait. I've not been this excited to get a camera since I got my first DSLR almost 10 years ago.

June 2017 , just bought the FZ1000 for 620$. I just don't see anything better out there for under 1000$. I tried the Canon G3X but it just feels awkward in the hands (who designed it?) and the FZ2000 is double the price. Can't believe that 3 years later and it's still the best choice. Talk about ahead of its time.

I would agree with you. I've got the fz1000 and fz2500 and the former is a bit better. When you can get a fz1000 for $385 then there is no question on which model to purchase.

I really love the aperature ring on the lens and the physical EC dial on top of the RX 10. I truely hope that Sony does not ditch those when they come out with a competitor. I would pop for an RX 10 2 if they just added more zoom range (just a little more to keep it a constant 2.8), and 4k video. I feel that the RX 10 is almost the perfect camera. Oh and they have to keep the weather seal and the mic in and headphone out too. All things that I love about the RX10 that the Panasonic does not have.

Great review. Thank you! I bought the FZ1000 a few weeks ago. I love the 25-400 zoom. I also love silent mode. It is great for taking discrete pics. Also, great for taking pics of performances that have very soft sections of music. With silent mode you won't be disturbing the people around you. Also, great for quiet churches. I was surprised how good the quality is at higher isos. I have had to shoot a lot of pics at ISO 6400 and the quality is pretty good. Especially, after a little noise reduction in Lightroom 5.
When the weather gets nicer here in Chicago I will go downtown and test the 4k video. I have had a lot of cameras in the past 15 years but I am most excited about shooting with this camera. I love having macro and a long zoom without changing lenses. I love having time lapse built into the software. No need to download an app. like you do with the Sony A6000. One thing I don't like is the bracketing settings force you to take 5 pics if you want to do 2 stops over and 2 stops under. I just want to take three pics. Hopefully they fix this in a firmware update.I would also like to be able to use the self timer with bracketing. (in case I don't have a remote with me)
I am looking forward to learning more about the camera. So far I am really happy with the layout of the buttons and the ability to add anything I use often to the quick menu. I haven't tired the digital zooms yet. That will be crazy to be able to shoot at 1600mm! I hope the quality is decent.
I also wish it could go smaller than F8 but, who knows. Maybe with this sensor size, F8 is enough to get the amount of depth of field I will need for landscape shots.
Looking forward to shooting more with this great camera. I guess my Sony A6000 and Canon L glass (with meta bones adapter) will be getting a rest for a while. :)

Buying this camera based on this review 👍 Yes it has limitations but it's not top-end job - you get what you pay for. Thanks for helping me decide, after months of research. I love this camera.

be aware that 4K video mode on this thing shrinks the sensor area it uses by a LOT. You don't get anywhere near a 1" sensor's noise performance when using it.

I am right in the middle of decision process which model of a bridge camera will replace my current HX90V. Obviously FZ-1000 (Mark 2, however, these days) appeared on my list. I like your reasoning about its predecessor's features, just want to add my 2 cents: I bought my Sony HX90V having been super tired of Pentax Kx. Carrying the gear was the source of the re-occurring dilemmas before any trip "should I take the camera? Will the camera fit in my compact luggage?", but first and foremost - having to change the lenses turned out into so many missed photo opportunities that it started to be a real soul pain and remorse. HX90V on the other hand, while solving both problems (and having taken tons of astonishing pictures, esp at distant 30x zooms), started to be more of a physical pain - eyestrain from the micro-everything reality. So, when you mention the big size of FZ-1000 as a downside - I don't agree. It is a very good and handy property of the equipment, the bigger chassis, the more physical switches and dials can fit into it.The only missing feature that is really holding me back from a quick, enthusiastic purchase, is lack of a weather sealing, esp. given my nordic plans. A wish feature would be double memory card slots so one could designate faster card to 4K and slower to still photos. Other things that tell me to seek a replacement for HX90V are: (1) its macro mode fails to kick in very often (2) no RAW there (3) obviously, no way to attach a UV or polarisation filter - this wasn't a surprise, but it just turned out to be very limiting.
I think, just as you said, FZ-1000 (and II) is a very versatile camera, covering a lot of situations. Should I end up buying FZ-1000 II, it's going to be camera A rather than camera B. Sony will still go with me on my trips as a backup camera and be used whenever 400mm focal length will be not enough. Thanks for our time and effort shooting this review.

Do you know what the largest size SD card would be that can be used with his camera? The manual said it accepts 2 gig, 8 gig, 16 gig, 32 gig, and 64 gig cards. it seems strange to me That it wouldn’t accept something larger than 64 gigs when it’s a 4K video camera.

Great video and review - such a practical camera - the Flip LCD a great option - I just think Panasonic does not get the respect as Sony - Canon - Nikon - Fuji and Olympus - and yes I have all the other brands - but I really have gotten lot of respect for Panasonic now with cameras like the GH4 - LX100 - G7 and soon to come GX8 - GM5 - GX7 and watching your video of the FZ1000 I would have to add it -
I have 20 cameras from RX100 to Nikon DSLR's - and like using my GX7's the most - and yes I have the A6000 - A7 - OMD-Em1 & 5 - Fuji x100s etc - So I have the GX8 on pre-order - of course Sony makes awesome sensors - but for me Panasonic with their many FN buttons and C1 C2 C3 and 4k and many features and good glass just makes the many Panasonic's just very impressive - but of course there is no perfect camera - I have given up on Sony and Fuji ever putting Touch LCD - Touch Shutter in any of their cameras :) but I still buy the various brands - just think Panasonic is underestimated by many -

What an excellent review! I have watched many reviews concerning this camera before making a decision on buying it. Your review gets down to the'nuts and bolts' of the system, especially your description of the lens and its equivalancy compared to the Sony hx300 and 400. I am of course subscribing, and will be looking forward to more of your excellent reviews.
    Thank you. Ed

Interesting description and commentary about the camera. I'd like to see more visuals though, like examples of shots you've made, etc. I bought this cam in April 2015 and so far it has delivered excellent image quality. I shoot RAW most of the time and Lightroom has no trouble developing the images and converting them to DNG format. Battery life is pretty good. I shot 800+ images & short videos in one session and was only about down to 1/2 battery power, according to the camera. I've no idea how accurate the gauge is, but that's pretty impressive to me. So far I like it a lot and have had no unpleasant surprises like I had when I bought a Fujifilm X-S1 3 years ago (AF too slow for action shots, purple blob in the middle of some images NOT shot with the sun in the lens, AF would lose focus while doing video at full zoom and would not recover unless I unzoomed, etc.). I've yet to find a flaw on the FZ1000. Kudos to Panasonic for creating a great camera.

Great one ( even without ND Filters and XAVCS format as in Sony ax100) but price should be 600 USD or 450 Euro or 2000 PLN in Poland. Over 900 is still to much, and I think another manufacturers as Canon will do 4K megazooms quickly. Maybe even on Photokina 2014 or CEZ 2015

I had a Sony trv-22 mini DV since 2003, it is starting to play up a bit, I am thinking of upgrading, I am not a professional photographer, and will be using it mainly for tourist , family moments videos, would you advice me to buy this as it would be interesting to have this kind of camera that I never had with the zoom, stills, and other stuff, which I might find interesting and would introduce me to take a new hobby of zooming on plants, nature, slow motion, etc..., I understand it can do video as good as handy cams, or would I be better getting a camcorder such as the Panasonic HC-WX970M or Panasonic HC-WX870M,
what this be as good and even a more all in one investment or in other words what are the advantages vs disadvantages in getting the FZ1000 instead of the 4K Ultra HD Camcorder HC-WX970M.

Can u really compare that 1" sensor to an APS-C like the a6000? I have the RX 100 m2, it takes great photos so I'm not knocking it, but then this isn't the "whole package", it's really for video that can take "really decent" photos, that's why people upgrade to APS-C, Full Frame, etc. if u want more stunning photos, among other things. Like u said u have a a7r & I suspect your not giving that up anytime soon, haha, but I get where your coming from.

    • @twalker294

A larger sensor will not give you more stunning photos. If you are relying on equipment to make your photography better, you're doing it wrong.
