Also the extremely emotional and realistically desperate Azula breakdown at the end got reduced to her just going "huah" and puffing a little bit of fire, it's hilariously bad. Honestly this is still a terrific game! It just needs better graphics, story, cut scenes, attacks, animations, abilities, puzzles, death walls out of bounds, better voice acting, a better combat system, a giant sea monster or two, and anything that could possibly be mistaken for fun!
Add a consistent save system. My family gave up on finishing it after we closed the game and later came back to the first fight against Zuko... that was when I remembered it's important to look up reviews and reported issues before buying a game 😢
How do they keep getting Nickelodeon properties? They made the nicktoon kart games, and that first, silent version of the Nickelodeon smash bros clone. And despite quality, Nickelodeon keeps going back to them
@@enlongjones2394 Because Nickelodeon is floundering. They're desperately trying to stay relevant despite the only thing they have that still makes money being Spongebob, and they're willing to do anything.
My brother has this and he made me play it, the co op is genuinely awful, player 1 can pick between every character player 2 isn't and player 2 is stuck as one character. I was stuck as Katara the entire time
So in some European countries, apparently ATLA is called as "Avatar: Legend of Aang" where "ALA" would make sense (and it's due to dumb reasons). But for this tho? Yeah no.
"ALA" is just a codename. It's not meant to be a faithful abbreviation nor was it meant to be seen by the players. That's like saying Magic designers don't know anything about Lord of the Rings because their set is LTR and not LOTR... but it's because their codenames are strictly 3 characters.
I think the one, and I mean ONE good thing I can say about this game... A thing that mind you, they don't even properly make use of... Is the idea of taking a game that's a retelling of already known events, and throwing in deviations due to it being told by an unreliable narrator... Like imagine in an alternate universe where this was a good game, where Bumi and the others at the table cut in with comments at various points... Perhaps even entire side missions dedicated to how absolutly wrong some of them get it. Instead of generic villain mocking hero game over, when you die there's a brief line of something like: "Bumi you oaf, they're not dead!" or "And then everybody died!... No wait that's not right." Maybe even have bonus challenges that are frame as one person overexageratting various details... Though at this point I'm just putting more thought in how the idea could be used than the game devs put into the entire game. So really I can't say it's one good thing ABOUT this game... More one good thing this game COULD'VE had.
If youre interested in this type of narrative, maybe try Call of Juarez gunslinger! (No,its not a call of duty clone. The call of juarez is relevant for the story of the first two games, not this one tho) its pretty much told as a bar story and sometimes the narrator makes mistakes and it ends up causing some funny situations like you being suddenly swarmed by apaches, then the narrators going like "Wait, you were attacked by apaches? What happened to the cowboys?" "Huh? Did i say they were apaches?.."
When I was playing, I read interviews with like the creator or director of the game and it boiled down to “I wanted to make a puzzle game and not a fighting game” which is why the fights are so terrible and why most of the boss fights end up being just puzzles really. Like why make a puzzle game out of a show that iirc has its bending based of various martial arts!? These people never wanted to make a true ATLA game; they just wanted a popular IP and money
I mean, making co-op puzzles out of bending techniques with different party members to explore a vast world doesn't seem terrible off the bat, even if it isn't the first thing you think of from Avatar. It was more about the execution.
27:27 I think the issue from the development side is that they assume that everyone playing the game knows the story points already… which FAIR, I’m guessing 98ish% of the players already do. But even still, just because WE KNOW what’s supposed to be happening doesn’t mean they should SKIP IT!!
Skipping over the story screws both returning fans of the show and people who have never seen it. People who have seen the show will be pissed that the devs butchered an amazing story, and new fans won’t be able to get engaged with the game because of the lackluster story. (Not that this game was engaging to begin with)
I've only experienced ATLA through digital osmosis (something I promise I'll fix soon™) so this game feels as if I'd directed it: A lot of "so this thing happened and then..." and "oh right, that guy, so yeah he's there too."
21:10 I noticed that when they move their eyebrows, the shadows dont change with them. You just get these shots where the shadow goes above the eyebrows, and when I noticed it I chould stop focusing on it
The idea of having the story be told by an unreliable narrator, allowing the game to justify adding weird gameplay elements and such, could be a really fun idea. What a shame it turned out like this.
Im actually so happy this game makes people talk about this cuz it allows me to talk about my favourite cowboy game-- Maybe try call of juarez gunslinger!! It not only has killer gameplay, but it has a fun unreliable narrator, which is a drunk guy on a bar!
This game is like hearing someone retell the story, but they have ADHD so they're constantly forgetting major parts of it, and then just continuing on forgetting that they forgot to introduce half the characters they're talking about
It's baffling that the AAA studios keep trying to retell the Aang story. Guys, adapt one of the Kyoshi novels or something. The original series set sky-high expectations, you're not gonna compete with it directly.
@@NYKevin100you fail to understand The goal is not to match the original in terms of greatness or even surpass it….it’s to cash in on the nostalgia of those who grew up with it
Fun Fact!: Avatar the Burning Earth, that Xbox game famous for its achievemnts, is actually a sequel, in a trilogy. Avatar The Last Airbender, Avatar The Burning Earth, and Avatar Into the Inferno are a trilogy of games that are about as good as you would expect. But, the first one. The first one I have seen no one talk about anywhere. It's so bad. Toph didn't exist yet I guess so the 4 playable characters are Aang Sokka Katar and Haru!? The graphics are abysmal, granted it was a GC/Ps2/Xbox/Wii Game but it's somehow still bad in comparison(wait oh my god it was on the DS too HOW!?) The game has an original story starting at the Northern water tribe at the beginning of season 2 but mimicks the progression of season 1 with Zuko attacking and then going to similar locations. This game was also my childhood. I love this game. It to this day has one of my favorite series of collectibles and some really funny stuff throughout it (Sokka has a buff where he sets his arms on fire and then yells in pain. Why? No idea. But it's his best move so you use it constantly) My favorite is this one stupid face Haru makes in a cutscene after he joins you, the polyhons on his smile are screwed and it looks absolutely cursed. I love this game just so much.
I actually had this one on DS! And yes it was bad, but it still had a weird charm that as a kid I loved. The fighting mechanics were also fairly interesting, especially for a DS game. I played through it so many times to 100% it, and the Pai Sho mini game was extremely addictive.
I… I might have had that game growing up. A PS2 atla game where the Earth Bender Stand-In was Haru sounds familiar. I’m 90% sure I don’t still have it, but that just unlocked a CORE memory
First- YES! Finally someone mentions the First Game. I had it on Xbox as well and found, although through nostalgia glasses, one of the betters. It was the beginning of IP shovelware, BUT because it was something orginal and if I remember right, didnt really mess with the canon, I appreciated it. Was it the Best? No. But can you say that the originality they took with what they had- not even knowing IF book 2 was coming out and what would be included with it- is any better than what weve been recently getting even with the WHOLE story out? Imo-No, its not worse. But i WAS happy that there was an Earthbender included, because Bumi made me love Earthbenders; and having Haru being it was cool at the time, cause you know teen angst and fight the power. 😂
I remember that game. They put a collectible in the first stage that you have to come and get as Katara, but you don't get Katara as a playable character until a later level, and I never figured out how to go back to an earlier stage. I didn't realize there was equipment until a second playthrough, so I beat the entire game with starting equipment. There's a mission where Aang and Sokka have to disguise themselves as fire nation soldiers and break into a prison. I didn't realize that it was a stealth mission and beat up all the guards from the beginning, and there was no penalty. I also played Burning Earth, but it was the Wii version, and I got stuck escaping from the spirit library because the motion controls were so bad that I couldn't pass the motion control quick time event that opens a door. Wan Shi Tong broke through the wall and is supposed to game over you because it's an escape sequence. But like half the times I was supposed to game over, I survived and was soft locked because the game thought had already lost wouldn't let me go back or open the door I needed to open to progress.
Thank you for the reminder that I didn't know Avatar was a tv show until I was about 13 or so because I didn't have nickelodeon. I genuinely thought that it was just a Wii game. At least the part where you flew around as Aang was fun.
That is actually interesting. Did you ever watch the series? If so, what was your opinion compared to the game? Character and world wise, but anything you remember would be interesting.
yknow.... avatar is one of the few shows where I think a open world game could work. Turn every episode into a sidequest, with the important keymoment of the show being primary missions. You travel on appa through the world (cant go to the firenation since there is a blockade, figure something similar out for the heart of the earth nation?) On the way you can do puzzles/little sidequests that let you gather collectibles and upgrades to your abilities maybe?
25:47 What’s even worse about this being the first time you see Iroh is that he and Zuko are supposed to be pretending to be Earth Kingdom citizens but Iroh is wearing Fire Nation garb
The reveal that the plot twist of an unreliable narrator stems from a completely black cutscene ALL THE WAY back at the beginning really helps elevate the "top-notch" quality of this game
34:18 I just gotta mention this cuz it’s my favourite game ever, but Rayman 3 music slaps. Never would have guessed that Alpha would use this in his videos but this made me so happy!
So uuuuh fun fact, I never watched Avatar. Sure I caught an episode here or there but I have not seen more than 3 episodes maybe. After seeing this game, this is the story of Avatar as I know it: There's a dude in an iceberg called an "avatar" whatever that is. He meets up with 2 other kids and go from place to place to learn elemental powers. He learns these through extra-dimensional puzzle rooms. The fire nation is bad and attacks all the time, but are easily defeated because they are pushovers. There is a fire nation prince and princess and they also attack but put up slightly more of a fight. I can only assume they attack because their regular goons are so pathetic it makes their nation look bad. There's also like, 3 separate quirky old guys that sit around a lot and only jump into action at the very end. There's also an earth girl and a flying cow. Every single thing is locked behind either blocks or Subway Surfers. In the end this avatar kid shazooms the big villain (Mr Fire Nation) so hard he gives up out of shame. The End. Was I close?
Something that people don't mention about this game too is that they have far too many inconsistencies with outfits. Especially in book 3. Katara had her loose hair when she wore her fire nation outfit, but somehow she has her hair style from book 1 throughout the entirety of book 3. Sokka has his hair changing from book 1 to book 3, having less hair to suddenly having a lot of hair then nothing again. And then Iroh having his fire nation outfit from book 1 when we first see him in book 2--he should be wearing earth kingdom clothing. Especially during the scene where Aang dies. Hell, there are some cutscenes where not only the game uses the wrong models, but the comic art looking cutscenes use the wrong design entirely. Where Aang meets the lion turtle and learns to energy bend, he suddenly has his old airbender outfit from books 1-2, IN A DRAWN CUTSCENE. The outfits stopped being consistent after book 1 and its so glaring to me, i know i saw chat also point out those facts while i was watching this on Alpharad's other channel, and this sucks because the drawn stuff looked good too, like it came out of the comics
The game supposedly had a very large dev team but only one dev actually made the game the rest where busy jorking it to pictures of wooden boxes while playing subway surfers.
the beloved high budget show that people have wanted to immerse themselves in for 15 years and yet it always get's the video game budget of a trip to Dollar Tree
The weird mix of 3d cut scenes and comic book ones, kinda feels like they had 2 or more groups working on it and then just kinda mashed the pieces together
I almost feel like the point of this game, is to confuse people, who have never seen the show, so much, that they go and watch the show. Just to try and make sense of this.
as a game designer trying to make a movie into a game you have a few simple steps, think of the most filler episodes and make gameplay for them, take the best parts of the show everyone loves and recap it in text, forget some very important and memorable details. Thats how you make the best game possible
I still think the ideal ATLA video game adaptation would be volleyball. Just make a stupidly-well-designed volleyball game with a ton of characters with special abilities (bending or otherwise) and a whole bunch of cool stages to play on.
Omg that’d be great. Hell, the fire nation kids even play a kind of volleyball (albeit with a lot more kicks) in the beach episode, so you could absolutely make the story for it some kind of wacky post-finale tournament arc
Make a full game out of the pro bending ball game from Korra! The Korra beat-em-up on PS3 had pro bending segments and apparently a larger minigame. Make a full game about smacking discs around with bending!

Man black myth wukong left a huge hole in my chest, it just made me think how much potential Avatar has, like imagine a avatar game that is semi-open world where you can explore all of the places they visited in the show, while following a semi-linesr story where you can find little easter eggs of the show, also having a similar combat to wukong
I usually love video game slop.. But seeing a serious masterpiece of filmography adapted so badly just kinda hurts. The gollum game felt that way too Like they're demanding money for spitting on it. As a person who never watched avatar but know what it sorta was this is so peak lmao. couldn't agree more with the sarcastic "who?" every time a new character pops up
So, Katara's 3d animations during dialogs felt familiar. Has anyone seen DougDoug's Napoleon AI 3d model speaking? Specially when the character model nods with an arm crossed and the other gesturing affirmation. Same as Katara's model here, I feel. I'm not familiar with how you can get 3d models from the internet, but something's telling me that this game got some of their 3d animation sprites for very cheap if not for free. It wouldn't be a surprise lol
Yeah you're pretty much right lol, the thing about 3D is that you can get animations from asset stores, so a lot of games buy or use free animations from these marketplaces to save on animation time, and in Unreal Engine's (the engine the game's made in) case, they're incredibly easy to get and just set up into a game. DougDoug and the Devs might be using the same animation pack, which is fine for Doug who does it for fun mostly, but not for a fully released game where they're already cutting costs on cutscenes, narrative, gameplay, models, art direction, vfx, sfx, level design, music and a lot of other things I might be forgetting to mention. Kinda funny they couldn't really be bothered to try in any way
1. What a cop out ending 2. Imagine they make the energy bending section a subway surfers one where you have to run till you cover ozai to remove his bending

So in some European countries, apparently ATLA is called as "Avatar: Legend of Aang" where "ALA" would make sense (and it's due to dumb reasons). But for this tho? Yeah no.
In spanish its also Avatar, la Leyenda de Aang
@@SpicyCannoli that’s fair, but i still can’t find any evidence of Spanish fans calling ALA instead of ATLA

"ALA" is just a codename. It's not meant to be a faithful abbreviation nor was it meant to be seen by the players.

The call of juarez is relevant for the story of the first two games, not this one tho) its pretty much told as a bar story and sometimes the narrator makes mistakes and it ends up causing some funny situations like you being suddenly swarmed by apaches, then the narrators going like
"Wait, you were attacked by apaches? What happened to the cowboys?"
"Huh? Did i say they were apaches?.."
@@Stillbraixenthoit reminds me of tiny Tina’s assault on dragon keep
Head-canon: This game was made by Cabbage man in order to make team avatar look bad to anyone who doesn’t know them. Hence why he is the fire lord

Skipping over the story screws both returning fans of the show and people who have never seen it. People who have seen the show will be pissed that the devs butchered an amazing story, and new fans won’t be able to get engaged with the game because of the lackluster story.

The graphics are abysmal, granted it was a GC/Ps2/Xbox/Wii Game but it's somehow still bad in comparison(wait oh my god it was on the DS too HOW!?)
The game has an original story starting at the Northern water tribe at the beginning of season 2 but mimicks the progression of season 1 with Zuko attacking and then going to similar locations.
This game was also my childhood. I love this game. It to this day has one of my favorite series of collectibles and some really funny stuff throughout it (Sokka has a buff where he sets his arms on fire and then yells in pain. Why? No idea. But it's his best move so you use it constantly)
My favorite is this one stupid face Haru makes in a cutscene after he joins you, the polyhons on his smile are screwed and it looks absolutely cursed.
Burning Earth was also on GBA. I would know, I had it.
But like half the times I was supposed to game over, I survived and was soft locked because the game thought had already lost wouldn't let me go back or open the door I needed to open to progress.

yknow.... avatar is one of the few shows where I think a open world game could work.
Turn every episode into a sidequest, with the important keymoment of the show being primary missions. You travel on appa through the world (cant go to the firenation since there is a blockade, figure something similar out for the heart of the earth nation?)
On the way you can do puzzles/little sidequests that let you gather collectibles and upgrades to your abilities maybe?
I notice each chapter finished says it lets you replay it later as any character, so you can fight zuko as zuko and then zuko again as zuko again.
21:32. Did Katara just...wave hello??? To Toph??? BLIND Toph???

So uuuuh fun fact, I never watched Avatar. Sure I caught an episode here or there but I have not seen more than 3 episodes maybe. After seeing this game, this is the story of Avatar as I know it:
There's a dude in an iceberg called an "avatar" whatever that is.
As somebody who has watched the entire series 5 times, yes you're 100% correct
Brain rot
