Actually i did notice that you were intentionally going upside down every time lol. I thought it was weird at first, but i figured since you were a smaller fighter compared to your opponents, you'd end up on your back anyway, so you were pre-emptivly doing it in a way that gave you more of an advantage.
Or you were just experimenting lol. Since you are a teacher and it is a rare opportunity to figure out what works and what doesnt in such a common public location.

Icy Mike as always with spot on breakdowns. Yes, sir, it was you who showed more advanced techniques inverting guard and also the most ofensive in grappling, consistently. What the other masters in this competition showed was high-level low-risk manuevers. It's the front kick practiced 10,000 times. But you were the one with the """situational awareness""" and clear mind to risk the most while almost getting the huge reward. And so as they say that ofense may be the best defense, "ofensive stalling" it's perfect for dealing with an attacker in this context.

This caught my attention because I have actually witnessed a pretty brutal fight in a bus here in Brazil.
A big,, strong, muscled dude was apparently on drugs, yelling, punching the seat in front of him and intimidating everyone. I was seating right behind. Eventually, the guy in front of him snapped, stood up and started punching and front-kicking him in the face (while holding on to the top bars). He was a regular looking but tall construction worker type. He did quite a lot of damage to the guy's face and I was amazed that the guy wasn't knocked out.
The big dude had practically no reaction and just got out of the bus when the driver stopped.

  • @hagenanon9484

I loved this breakdown and these episodes were so much fun to watch. The only thing I would say about what you said about BJJ is that for the most part improvement in it is just getting better and better at the stuff you learn as a white belt. Yup. That's why the white belts stop practicing scissor sweeps and basic armbars, because they "don't work," but then a purple or black belt hits them with it. There's a huge difference between knowing a technique, and being able to do it effectively in sparring, and that difference is years of practice.

Glad to see this video! I was thinking a lot about this when watching. Fighting techniques were all very simple stuff. Headbutts, elbows, knees, a few regular punches and a few front kicks, and standard wrestling.
Could relatively simply make a whole style out of it. Not a lot of moves to learn. Very interesting to watch.

I mean it makes sense. When thrown into self defense situations most people resort to some kind of ugly boxing. I honestly think Randy Coutures old dirty boxing and wrestling is the ultimate street fighting combination, I think he’d fight like that in his sleep and most people could train some kind of competence in it.

Would've been really cool to see someone with a judo background on that bus, and whether there was enough space to throw anyone. And also how Kevin, who's similar size to Mike, might've handled the size difference differently

This video was interesting to me, because I was assaulted when I was a taxi driver. He sucker punched me from the backseat with a hook shot and I elbowed him directly in the face. I was enraged, because the drivers seat and center console were in my way. I was too busy covering and striking to reach the back release on the drivers seat. I had to turn myself 180 and kneel on the drivers seat to be able to engage my assailant. I almost got my thumb in his eye socket, but the drivers seat limited my reach. He was able to get distance by going back to the opposite corner of the cab. It was a lot harder to deliver punches kneeling on the drivers seat also. For awhile the POS switched sides and got cover behind the drivers seat. I got out through the drivers door to come around to F him up and then he got out of the other side of the taxi. At that point I had to get control of myself and I jumped back in the drivers seat locked the doors and sped off. The police found him, because he was stupid enough to come back out from where he was hiding. The police told me I should get counseling, because I could become a really “bad person” and I shouldn’t want to take peoples eyes out. If the laws and courts were rational, I would have been able to just deploy my knife and start stabbing and cutting. However, I was able to beat him hard enough to leave him with stitches and knock an earring off his head. He’s lucky the police arrived when he came out, but he was near where he was staying, so maybe he had a weapon. Obviously, I’m done with taxi driving. 😂

Man.. fighting inside the bus sucks! No space to kick or punch. Everyone needs to have this kind of training if they want to LEARN to defend themselves(of course in advance stages of their training). Because of absolute resistance from the attacker, feeling of claustrophobia in close space and desperation to get up is very frustrating and stressful. Not everyone can train themselves in self defense like this. Hard truth!

I LOVE THIS!! There isn't the "desperation" per sey as there might be with someone fighting for their life..but the idea of "maintaining a cool head", environmental tactical advantage, and idea of literal inverted concepts are displayed fairly well🤔😯 I appreciate the theology, and definitely the work!!💪Y'all are pioneers!! Keep it comin!!🤜🤛

It’s a pretty awesome concept, like the moving bus, stuff in the way and competitive aspect has to add to the adrenaline dump in a way that’s harder to replicate in any kind of sparring. I think Mike’s creativity and willingness to try odd techniques (even if wasn’t always effective) gives him opportunities to evolve in other competitions. Like dealing with someone larger like Seth bum rushing everyone because his style didn’t change much against each other combatant.

It‘s an excellent idea - we do this once a year with a standard public transport bus at my Sensei‘s dojo here in Germany (we‘re not allowed drive it around though). Poles that you normally hold on to, become great weapons to drive heads into and lock arms around. And the limited distance is a huge factor - it is a real test of fighting ability.
