    Lovely combination of colors and a more subtle choice to have gone with canvas for the lighter color. However it does require care when polishing to avoid stains, that being said, as long time spectator fan, you will smudge the canvas at some point regardless and it will annoy you(it's called patina) . My vintage AE's Ridgefields and Strawfut and Crockett/Jones with canvas sometimes suffer this fate but they are so elegant. The AE Broadstreet model uses soft leather for the lighter sections which make polishing much easier although a tad less classy, be brave and let your inner Gatsby shine!

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  Рік тому +3

      Yes. And for this reason, I really recommend only buffing with a chamois and not a shoe shine brush.

    • @seijiroukikuoka5975
      @seijiroukikuoka5975 Рік тому

      You can avoid that issue by waterproof the canvas parts with liquid waterproofers (or, because they won't harm the leather, just spray it on the leather, too).

    I must admit I have a bit of a spectator shoe fetish, owning several pairs with different configurations. They are just so right for the summer!

    I have about 10 pairs of various winter/ summer spectators of all types i.e., suedes, tweeds, light woolens, linens etc. that I rotate and wear pretty often for many years now. I stick to neutral color conditioners and polishes unless color is needed for a spot treatment. When my shoes are new I spray the fabric portions with either the Saphir or AE suede/fabric protector 3 light coats, and as needed thereafter, then I polish the leather sparingly using one fingertip as many thin coats as desired. I avoid using a big brush and carefully buff using only soft clean cloths like Kirby's or a piece of felt. A long time ago I tried taping off the fabric - forget it, who has time for that. Just don't worry too much, be careful, and get em done.

    Hi Kirby,
    On previous “new shoe” videos, you always recommend feeding new shoe hide with Saphir Renovateur, as the leather will not have previously been treated prior to or during manufacture and will need feeding.
    Having fed the hide, you then recommend applying the Saphir Medaille in the appropriate colour.
    Is there a reason you omitted the Renovateur to your new shoes on this occasion?

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  Рік тому +1

      No particular reason. Wanted to focus more on how to shine these spectators, which can be tricky.

    • @johnsinclair2672
      @johnsinclair2672 Рік тому

      @@kirbyallison thanks Kirby. So to clarify. The first step in treating new shoes, is to fed and moisturise them, using Saphir Renovateur or similar other brand, prior to applying a cream or wax polish?

    • @seijiroukikuoka5975
      @seijiroukikuoka5975 Рік тому

      @@johnsinclair2672usually, shoe cream, on its own, is more than enough to nourish the leather, especially if the leather doesn't even cover much of the flexing parts as is.

    I remember you did the factory tour and I immediately checked out the Carmina builder tool and I was a bit disappointed linen/canvas options weren't readily available for sections of the upper. I hope they made changes for this style. I'd love to have them make me one with a partial canvas upper similar to yours.

      I've tried it and there was no residue left behind in my experience (Frog tape). But IMHO it's one of those ideas that are good in theory but too bothersome and time consuming in practice. After you get a little practice it's really not necessary either. By accident I once had the tape strip off the leather finish in a small area on my chocolate hatch grain tartan spectators. I just added some color paste polish on that spot and it was fine.
