Wow. I'm diving right into that Grommets book. Never heard a thing about it but you've got me. Grew up in Southern California so skating, music, comics were my teenage years in the late 1980s. Amazing.
Been collecting comics for over 48 years, and I think banishing a beautiful comic to lifetime enclosure in a plastic prison is ridiculous. Maybe Action #1 or a Bill Gaines File copy of a mint EC title, maybe...but comics are meant to be enjoyed, read, sniffed, and gently handled.
That’s why I generally go raw for everything, but when stuff is high grade and is basically now an artifact, like AF 15 or TTA 39, grading is definitely appropriate. I just don’t get slabbing modern books.
Yeah slabbing moderns is kinda dumb, but I get it. I’m not big on slabs either.
Also if a book is particularly fragile or valuable it becomes an act of preservation
When I was a kid I didn't pay much attention to the artists. I just bought the books I liked. Now in my old fart years I appreciate the artists much more and collect back issues of my favorites, no matter what the book is.
I don’t think CGC is worried yet, but they’d be wise to keep an eye on what PSA is doing.
I think the problem some have with slabbing right now is all the quality control problems with damaged books and what not, and then there’s the influx of 9.9 and 10 grades coming in for certain books that basically resets their entire scale.
The PSA executives looked at their prototype comic book slab and said to themselves "Yep. That's the one. We'll definitely corner the comic book grading market with this. Collectors have been waiting for the same exact grading scale, but with an ugly-ass hard to read label. Ship it."

Regarding the Fast Willie Jackson issue, the guy in the back you said stepped out of Fat Albert & The Cosby Kids was the one I, at the beginning of the segment, said "that looks like JJ from Good Times", so it's funny you mentioned Good Times, as well. I've wanted a copy of that book for a while just for giggles. A bit pricey for a laugh, though. I'm enjoying you guys' channel even though I'm not that into modern comics. Learning new stuff and you guys do a good job of this sounding like a podcast. It sounds like NPR for comic book nerds.

While I normally consider a new player in a market a good thing as it adds choice for the consumer, I agree with Richard that PSA must prove itself, and more, must rise in some way above the pack, to be noticed and trusted by fans.
That Captain America story with Deathlok is excellent, one of the most memorable for me during that era.

PSA is my main jam for mtg cards because: they used to do $7 or $8 per card bulk specials and I like that the slabs are small.
For consistency, I think I'll stick with CGC for comics.
Wondering your thoughts on the new EC (ONi Publishing) horror and sci-fi comics coming out Wednesday and in 2 weeks.
I never read x-men growing up but I always liked the characters from the cartoon, movies and video games. I read house of X/powers of X and loved it (or at least I told myself I loved it? Idk I thought it was interesting) but when I started reading the x-men title that followed, I had to stop. I just got overwhelmed with all the new characters and story lines that were being referenced and I couldn’t keep up. Sometime soon they need a hard reboot
Raws are the way to go. Slabbing should only be meant for grails, major first appearances or variant covers to encapsulate the artwork. More than likely if it's a book you're interested in you're gonna have a copy of cover a anyways. And with reprints and facsimiles growing in popularity now, makes sense to slab or keep those major keeps slabbed. Otherwise I'll keep it raw until a cheaper alternative becomes available
PSA labels always look like they are printed on an old dot matrix printer and they had to tear off the perforated strips with the print feeder holes.
Have you watched The King of Collectibles on Netflix? Season 2 dropped with comics stories, including Marvel cards, ComicCon, Detective Comics #27, and features a Whatnot comics seller, as well. What do you think? Of the business, of founder Ken Goldin, of the reality show glitz and glam the show has tried to add to the collectibles scene?

I’ve never used them but when getting back into Pokémon cards I noticed card prices track by PSA first and other places after
I think if we keep holding CGC to be the most Valuable label PSA will just be looked at as another CBCS
Also Richard I thought your article was very cool cause that Lotus card is so expensive
I was more of a card collector and didn’t play much but ya today nobody would ever play with a 1st edition Charizard it will get encased and stay there
It’s like when people had the foresight to buy Starwars action figures and Videogames and just keep them sealed unopened never used nobody would’ve expected anything to have value

Wow, PSA picked a brilliant time to enter the market! The market is way down, CGC is hurting, fans are rejecting buying and selling slabs, and NOW PSA jumps in??!! A horrible, stupid, insane business decision! I too have quit sending books in for slabbing and am selling raws (just sold an FF 48 raw!).
Wait, you never wanted UV protection with your slabs??? A decent option for that are the cases from comic capsule, but they only have one size for modern books right now…

As a few weeks have past, I’m beginning to feel like I’m alone in rating X-Men #1 so highly. Oh well, to each their own. I am genuinely excited to read #2 but maybe I won’t hold my breath to read #15 if the reception of this run stays where it is.
PSA has a pedigree of being the premier grading company. Much of the drama focused on CGC and their loose standards has always had the comparison of how well PSA does over at cards. I don’t think PSA will replace CGC any time soon but I think this will quickly replace CBCS unfortunately
I know CGC has the grading market by the short and curlies but let's be honest they offer very little outside the financial benefits that their slabs offer over their competitors - although their slabs are terrible and their grading inconsistent, unfortunately they reach higher prices when selling. The grading market needs competition and this is how that starts. I'm all for both CBCS and PSA levelling the playing field.
In my opinion, until PSA establishes value they will be another option for those that are disheartened by recent CGC shenanigans and drama…I will wait and see over the next 2 years
What wasn't mentioned is how huge PSA is compared to CGC. Label unfortunately will not be changed since that is their brand but from what I hear the slab plastic is very high grade so hard to crack plus it may be include UV protection. If they take even 20% market share from CGC it will be a success for them. I for sure will send my sports magazines to them.
Agreed on Xmen 1. It's not a full reboot.
Since PSA has a policy of rejecting cards that have been chemically cleaned and pressed, the question is will the comic community reject PSA because of the possibility that they will not grade "Pressed and Cleaned" comics?
Had a shadow box that I would rotate my CGC comics in, At least until my wife took over that space.🙄
I would have no issue with not slabbing my comics to sell, if ppl are willing to pay slab prices. I have Web of Spider-man #32 it a for sure 9.8, last sold price was $446. But you and I know very well no one wants to pay slab prices for raw (yet justified 9.8 grade)
Classic J. Scott Campbell cover?? Mmm idk man, I feel like it ain't a classic J. Scott campbell cover unless it's a cheesecake cover 😂 I actually love that cover and I'm hoping to get a copy. That's one of the few J. Scott Campbell covers that is not sexualized as his covers usually are. I honestly get a little annoyed that it's always women who are highly sexualized in comics. Not that there's anything wrong with sexy covers (well actually people could make good arguments as to why it is wrong) but I would like to see more men sexualized to even out the playing field a little more. I mean jeez it's 2024. I would love to see some hunky wolverine or black panther! there's definitely clients out there and I'm one of em! 😂

PSA’s graphic design doesn’t look good on their card labels either, tbh.
I just can't get myself to trust reading xmen again. I have uncanny 140-525 but stopped collecting after multiple cross overs and numerous x titles. I just stopped caring what happens to them. "No more mutants" was ok by me. Why did they have to bring them back. Time for new stories and ndw characters. Instead we get Marvel and DC continuing to copy each other.
I don’t like the futur psa label, like Richard has say , it’s look cheap.
Savage Dragon is pure trash in my opinion. I never cared for Larsen's art, I think he is overrated.
