- The Coronation in 1953 appeared to be a glittering triumph for the House of Windsor. But behind the scenes there was a three-cornered story of jealousy and rivalry at the highest level. The new Queen was caught in the middle.
While the new Queen largely sided with her mother over arrangements for the Coronation, she backed Philip over perhaps the most important decision to televise the ceremony inside Westminster Abbey. In doing so she set a precedent for television to be given access to the most intimate rituals.
Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

Well said Celisar, she was indeed not nice but huffy, arrogant and an incredible show-of with all that furr, jewellery and giant sized, ridiculous looking hats. I much liked her daughter, Elisabeth who always used to dress impeccable but modest, nothing like her mother's show of.
I don't think anyone in history enjoyed being Queen more than Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.
OF COURSE ...SHE LOVED THE ROYAL POWER AND STATUS ..
It was a difficult time for her, I’m sure. I’m impressed with Phillip’s handling of the situation. My maiden name is Bowes… maybe I just have a soft spot for her.
Totally 😊agree
Oh please. If you were King or Queen you would enjoy it just like she did 😂
wait that’s the Queen Mother, right? The late Queen Elizabeth II was Elizabeth Alexandra Mary
What a stud! Young Elizabeth snagged a real hunk! And he turned into her rock for the Empire for almost 70 years. I knew she wouldnt last long without him.
May they rest together in peace for all eternity.💖💖💖💖💖
Philip spoke his mind and didn't care what anyone thought, including his in-laws.
Actually the Queen Mother was quite self-absorbed and adored the power and pomp. Dealing with that was often difficult for Elizabeth. Also, tyranny of tradition is a good word for what has happened over the years.
She was an awful human being and should rightfully have been kicked out the moment Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip moved in. And not just from the palace.
The Queen mother was only Queen Consort for 13 years, but she lived another 51 years after her husband died, and she had the best of everything.

Terrific deference and power going to her daughter and herself elbowed into the shadows? What a narcissistic person the Queen Mother truly was. It’s your daughter lady! A loving mother would be proud!!
I was sick and home from school when the coronation was televised. I remember sitting in my parents’ bed and watching it.
Wow really? So cool
The old and the new clash. History keeps repeating itself, doesn’t it? How classic!
Narcissistic Queen .mother totally responsible for enabling Charles to be what he is and thsts nothing to brag about.Thought she could run the country through her daughter till her son in law put her in her place about his family but she was cloak and dagger with Charlie..boy!!!!

None of us were flies on the walls of their marriage, but look how very long they were together! And once he passed away she soon followed…16 months later.
People of this country owes Prince Phillip so much because he suppressed his personal feelings and put his loyalty to the Queen and country first. He served the Queen and country to the best of his ability.

No one in the so-called royal family "serves" anyone. The Monarchy could magically go "poof!" and disappear forever and not one British citizen's life would change one iota.
The Queen suppressed her feelings and sacrificed her life at such a very young age for 70 years. I get that Phillip traditionally was the “Man” of the house. Their story is admirable!

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth are the best couple having lived for 73 years together. This says it all.Queen Elizabeth passed away soon after her beloved husband's death after 1year and 6 months. She is now with Prince Philip.
The Queen Mother was still in control of the palace after the coronation and unlike Victoria , Elizabeth did not have the guts to evict her from the palace to Clarance house which was lent large enough to serve her.
No.... you've got that so wrong
The Queen Mother Elizabeth Bowes Lyons Windsor was granted by her daughter HRM Queen Elizabeth Alexandra Mary II. Royal duties permissions to carry on with the work of King George VI. She asked for the rights to carry on her husband's intent for the monarchy and for England. Anything can be said but one thing is sure HRM Elizabeth II outlasted any monarch including the famously long reign of Alexandrina Victoria. Prince Philip had, as most of Eurooean Royalties, quite a lot german ancestors, but none of them were Kings or Queens in Germany. His "Royalty" came from Greece, Denmark, Russia and the UK. He was not a close relative to one of the former 4 german Kingdoms.

Am I wrong in telling that Prince Philip was
by maternal side :
Mountbatten , previously Battemberg, a German family , branch of family of Hesse and the Rhine , due to the morganatic marriage between Alexander of Hesse and the Rhine (third son of Louis II Granduke of Hesse/Rhine ) and Julia Hauke.
They had three sons:
Louis Prince of Battemberg who married Victoria of Hesse daughter of Granduke Louis IV of Hesse and Alice Princess of Great Britain daughter of Queen Victoria.
They were cousins and parents of Alix , mother of Prince Philip, Louisa, second wife of King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden, and Lord Louis Mountbatten (so called Uncle Dickie) and another one son.
Victoria of Hesse was also, among other, sister of Alexandra Feodorovna , latest Empress of Russia wife of Nicolas II , and Elizabeth who married Granduke Sergei of Russia and was killed during the Russian revolution with other 18 relatives by throwing alive in a cool mine;
Alexander who was named Prince of Bulgaria , temporarily , during Balkans war;
Henry , Prince of Battemberg , who married Beatrix , last daughter of Queen Victoria and they were parents of Victoria Eugenia Queen of Spain , wife of Alfonso XIII, and great grandmother of the King Felipe VI of Spain.
By paternal side
he was son of Prince Andrew of Greece, son of King George I of the Ellenes , whom was offered the reign of Greece in 1845, at the age of 18, son of King Christian IX of Denmark and Louise of Hesse Kassel.
George I was also brother to Alexandra Queen consort of England , wife of King Edward VII son of Queen Victoria , and to Dagmar, better known as Empress Maria Feodorovna wife of Alexander III of Russia and mother of Nicolas II last Emperor of Russia.
So Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II were cousins by maternal side through princess Alix of Great Britain (and obvoously Queen Victoria) and by paternal side through Christian IX of Denmark.
By these connections they are related to the other Kings and Queen in Europe.

And, as usual, in these documentaries, they wheel out the usual 'experts' who try to give the impression that they know it all. They should try talking to those of us who actually work there and see it day-to-day.
It shows the arrogrance and pride of Queen Mother of the present queen.

I feel like Philip was very much like prince Albert. He came into Buckingham Palace and sorted it all out the exact same thing Albert did so many years ago! I have always viewed the queen and prince Philip as the modern Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Cousins and somewhat different personalities. I truly believe had Albert lived longer Victoria and alberts marriage would have very much resembled Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in later life. It is crazy how many similarities they truly have l.
The one thing that allways has disturbed me about the marriage of Her Majesty and Prince Philip was this idiotic tradition that Prince Philip had to be allways 2 steps BEHIND the queen: who started this silliness in the first place ? I grew up in a country with a monarch (Holland) but there was no such thing as a prince walking 2 steps behind the queen, neither have I seen this silly tradition elswhere among European royalty. Prince Philip definitely deserved to walk next to the queen: he did so much for Brittain but always quiet and modest. He would have made an excellent King !!
Actually, Philip didn't sort out Buckingham Palace. In the 1950's he took a crack at it but every time he had an idea, Her Majesty felt the need to run it past her mother and the so-called "Queen Mum" in her self-appointed role as the defender of the 19th century vetoed it. That is one reason Philip began to travel. Source: Prince Philip: A Critical Biography by John Parker 1990.

I think you missed the point: men of that era, and most today don’t like to be second to their wives. It is said, queen Victoria,s husband kept her pregnant ( 9 children in 17 years) to grab power away from her. In Elizabeth,s case she had to send Charles to his alma matar .

It sounds like the Queen Consort wasn’t as sad about her husband passing as she was passing on the spotlight to her daughter. She seemed to always try to upstage her daughter in the videos and photos of that time and was dressed like a pageant contestant even in her old age. If I had been Philip, I would’ve been down right furious over her appalling treatment and would’ve said to QE2, their can’t be 3 of us in this marriage and you can only have one of us sit next to the throne, choose. I’d understand if she was saddened by her husband’s passing and even feel sympathy for her but she seems to only care that her daughter(s) have taken center stage and she’s not ok with passing any attention to her (them). She wasn’t even the queen, just a consort, who didn’t add much to the monarchy. Sure she gave birth to QE2, but nannys raised her and besides an enormous bill for her clothes, gin and gambling, she gave more problems than anything else. Poor Philip had to give up everything (including being a prince in his own right), to play a supporting role to his wife and had to fight just to get his children to bare his last name. In those days, it was unheard of to have a woman, openly running the family and the family business. He basically had his balls cut off and if that wasn’t enough, he had to fight his mother in law from hell on everything, even the battles that were common sense (Making a servant carry notes to the other family members on a silver platter instead of a walkie talkie??? Come the hell on!) I’m surprised he didn’t strangle the old bat! Her over inflated sense of grandeur is was almost as bad as the present day MeGain.... everyone says she’s was so sweet?!? Pah-lease! She was sweet if she got her gin-induced way and her insanely expensive tastes satisfied by the taxpayers. What she did to Diana, treating her like dog poo on her $1,000 shoes and covering for Charles and his skank by giving them refuge to bang as often as they wanted but continued to talk shit about Edward VIII and Wallis? At least he was single and didn’t have children unlike Charles and Diana.

@Dana But it wasn't a very impressive story. Prince Philip's mother, Princess Alice was severely deaf and very spiritual. This combination did not sit well with a desire to present a robust(physically) view of Monarchy. Also Prince Philip's father was a womaniser. What we plebs would call a 'cad'. Non of this fitted the Victorian ideal of family life. As a visibly physically impaired person I am alert to such attitudes wherever I find them. Impaired people (now often called the Disabled") are something of an embarrassment to a healthy in mind body and soul image of an acceptable Royal personage. Sensitive and kind though prone to what I call "Celtic Flare" King Charles knew all about both His maternal and His paternal grandparents. The ignorance of such things bemuses Him

@@SymphonyBrahms She was classed as a commoner, just like Philip but not like today's commoner ie' Catherine and Meghan because the prior have royal blood (Prince Philip MORE than the Queen Mother!)
Just like our modern Megain
I don't understand why, if the commoner from Scotland was allowed to be crowned Queen Consort why wasn't the Royal from Greece also allowed to be crowned.
Because of power, the Queen couldn't have a king consort, he could try to overcome her or overthrow. Its the law, I suppose. Also, he abdicated his prince position in Greece. That I never understood.
Michael Burgess The Queen Mother was not a Commoner she was from the Bowes-Lyon family, From Lords and earls of long-standing reputable British families however Philip was from Greece and German families and this is why he was miss trusted so much, Especially with the growing tensions with Germany at the time of their marriage.
@@simonwales9710 The Queen Mother was a commoner. Anyone who is not of the Royal House is regarded as a commoner, even if the are titled.
Okay but can we agree that the term, and the way it was used was quite misleading
A King is superior to a Queen. Have you never played chess or cards? As Lauren May posted, as has happened so often in the past, rival royal courts would have been a disaster. Of course trying to get that answer in this pc culture is almost impossible. One has to find books from the past to get any accurate answers to almost anything now a days.
Ya I think Prince Philip had a hell of a time with the Queen Mother, which she was was no more than him. But he ended up doing a whole lot more for the world than she did. And kept up a higher standard of life than when the King was alive. It still should have been King EDWARD, CHARLES AND CAMILLA did the same thing! And they get the crown.
Happy Birthday and Congratulations!
So very interesting, esp message deliverable.
Such a stunning couple 💕🇬🇧
I think Prince Philip's wanderings forced the Queen to look objectively on her family. Thank goodness she was sensible
She was discrete and tolerant
unlike others . ⚜
Prince Phillip and princess Diana had nice look and height for the royal kingdom
Prince Philip, princess Diana and Kate Middleton duchess of chambridge are taking an important role making a good looking generation of the next british royal descendants
@@Rotiikismis ikr 💐💐💐
I think so... 🥺💖
Yups... Their height was really amazinggg 🦅💐
Since Prince Philip passed and we have seen so many images of him as a young man, I have thought of the similarities between him & Diana. They were both striking looking, tall, blond & charismatic. It is so sad that Diana never met Catherine or her grandchildren. She would still be only 60 years old this year, had she lived.
Prince Phillip was all too often misunderstood, he was a joker and tried to lighten the mood, only to be taken wrongly when he quipped or made a funny remark all too often leading to wrong conclusion that he had put his foot in it!
This is great. So interesting
❤I think the Queen & Prince Philip took the monarchy to a far more modern level . I am sure King Charles will continue to be a monarch of the people .
God bless the King.
I think prince Philip really helped the queen branch out into her own queen. I think everything happens for a reason and he just went along with it how boring
Hardly boring. He had a huge impact on the queen´s views throughout her life.
I would have thought Queen’s grandmother and her mother would have clashed.
The circus music fits so well😃
You can’t marry into this family unless you’re related in some ways but you also had to look the part to marry your cousin who’s either king or queen
Eternal rest grant unto Queen Elizabeth the 11.Amen
The Queen Mother hardly saw eye to eye with anyone, apart from the corgis. She was only 4’11.
Brilliant comment.
🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
King Philip(prince) is a very resilient person losing family at early age being displace and dealing with many challenges that life brings.
Elizabeth is Charming she may not be as beautiful as her sis! But she has something that Margaret lacks!
I find her Elisabeth quite beautiful!
They were adorable young girls and beautiful women. Elisabeth got to marry the man she loved and who loved her. Sad that Margaret was not able to do the same
A crown 👑
They're both equally boring looking tho ..
Elizabeth prettier than her sister. Hands down. But both lookers.
The Queen the mother knew where prince Phillip came from the Queen know that Phillip was from Royal and set up the meeting for Elizabeth and Philip to meet and to marry. This was all arranged
This was an interesting doc about Prince Phillip's, (and others), struggles to modernize the British Monarchy. My maternal English and paternal Scottish family came from backgrounds of great poverty and emigrated to Canada at the turn of the last century. When gawking at Queen Elizabeth's extravagant coronation please don't forget that the British public had been 'thru two World Wars and a Great Depression. While the Royals were swanning around in their castles/palaces, London was still bombed out, I knew people who contracted TB from contaminated milk, there was still rationing going on and people in Britain and Europe were totally exhausted. I am so glad that as a member of the Commonwealth, my tax money doesn't go towards this British 'dog and pony' snow, other than when there's a Royal visit! After all this time, the Aussies are still bitter about the way the English mis-treated them and turned their country into a virtual prison! Cruel Brittania indeed!
New South Wales was a colony to which prisoners were transported in the late 18th Century. Australia as a nation didn’t exist until 1901, prior to that it was a collection of independent colonies. Transportation had long ended at that point.
The Royal family in WW2 at least remained in London for the duration and Buckingham Palace did get bombed. Queen Elizabeth served in the ATS towards the end of the war and trained as a motor mechanic.
Military service features highly with them, most (not all) after WW2 have done some measure of service.
The queen pays taxes as do other members of the family, it’s true that they receive taxpayers money from the civil list to cover their royal duties expenses, they do have income from other sources such as investments etc. as do a lot of people.
They have their flaws like anyone else for sure, they are human beings like the rest of us.
What the hell is a “dog and pony” show?
Every story has 2 sides. I come from a Sikh family of the Punjab which was ruled by the Sikh kings before the British took over one by one except the Maharaja Ranjit Singh ‘s territory . He is the only non Afghan to rule Afghanistan in the modern times. . After his death, the British took over that area of the Punjab. Pre partition Punjab included current Indian capitals of India, New Delhi and of Pakistan, Islamabad. In 1947, the British divided Punjab, Kashmir and bengal among Hindus and Muslims. Sikhs were rightful heirs of the greater Punjab, the best agriculture land in the whole world. Even California pipes water from Colorado. The British stoles kohinoor , biggest diamond and huge amount of gold, silver, tax money from India (basically) Punjab as it was the richest and #1 state . Also, Sikhs fought with the British in both world wars in Europe , Second World War in south east Asia. Even as pilots. See bbc documentary. But how much were the British loyal to them?. But personally I hold no grudges against them now, as our people were never united. They didn,t follow the words of the saints. The British gave us mass education, infrastructure like trains, roads, hospitals, laws, parliamentary system, massive irrigation system in the greater Punjab which is now helping to feed over a billion people.
Really. I lived in Australia in 1976 for 12 months and never met an Aussie with such an opinion. Perhaps as you age, Catherine, you will become a less sour person, but I seriously doubt it.
@@mochilero-fe6hv What in the world are you talking about? I have been living on this Earth for almost 3/4 of a century! I am probably older & wiser than your are! There is nothing 'sour' about being glad that my taxes don't go towards supporting the Monarchy. Well, 'tho you may have lived in Australia, you're not Australian. Ever heard of Galipoli? Don't know about your grandparents & parents, but both of mine fought for King & country 'tho coming from very poor back-grounds. Observing how the British class system works, doesn't mean that they weren't any less loyal to their Crown! And yes. many friends & family ARE Australian, mate!!
Woke lefty per chance? The Queen served in the war unlike you. Her Father was at the Battle of Jutland unlike you. The Queens uncle died in world war 2. Buckingham Palace was bombed unlike your place. What has contaminated milk to do with the Royal family? The Royal Family received the same rations as everyone else. The Royal Family bring in more money by a long way than is spent on them. By the way I am also an Aussie and more free people arrived in Australia than prisoners. If you want to make smart remarks bother to get your history correct. By the way those imprisoned Aussies were Brits....
I’m really liking Philip, gaffes and all! Sad day when he goes, and when he does, most likely it will mark the decline of Elizabeth. I know that after 70 years of marriage and before that, loving someone all the way from the age of 14...it cannot be much longer after that. 😔💔
That's right, I just heard news from a friend that his grandmother passed at the age 108. So let's pray they live pass 100.
I also admire Prince Philip. I have a suspicion that some of his 'gaffes' were most deliberate. He coined a word for 'foot-in-mouth-disease' (I can't remember the word: started with pedalo ...) and I think he had great quiet joy in creating and utilising his 'gaffes'. He actually enjoys words, wordplay and puns.

Queen Elizabeth was so beautiful she had expression through her eyes, God bless them both ,,,,,,
Hi Shirley Merry Christmas to you.
With modern technology wouldn't it be possible to sharpen the images of the Coronation and restore the original colours ? Perhaps something similar could also be created for the Coronation and Funeral etc of Queen Victoria?..Or do these alterations already exist somewhere and I just haven't located them?
Ok but can we talk about how pretty Queen Elizabeth was? She was stunning. Also the Queen Mother was not a commoner. She belonged to the Scottish nobility.
Very true. Her mother however looked like an overweight fishwife!
Elizabeth became Queen the instant her father passed on February 6, 1952, not when she was coronated.
I offer my deepest condolences for the Queen and the family.
May Prince Philip Rest In Peace.
Every time I see a documentary of Prince Philip and I hear author Gyles Brandreth refer to Prince Philip as “ who was this young man... a suspect character...”, I absolutely cringe at the INSULT of him NOT RECOGNIZING a great, great, grandson of QUEEN VICTORIA. Gyles makes me sick 🤒. He is soooo ignorant and MEAN spirited because he knows darn well WHO prince Philip is. It goes to show that the British media was and still is full of CRAP 💩. The different members of the British media is still full of DECEPTION & are still 🤥 LIARS. They spin the truth and CREATE the information instead of REPORTING on the information. British media are Totally DISGUSTING 🤮!
Now that Prince Philip is dead, there are all sorts of nice things being said. It goes to show how hypocritical the British Media is. They refused to report on the positive things Prince Philip did, while he was alive. Even when he spent a month in the hospital, THEY kept SILENT about his positive contributions. British media is the WORST.
Any media exploits their power, along with royalties of the entire globe of reporting to the serfs, non landowners.
Chantal N6: Gyles Branreth was quoting was was said by others at the time..They're not his words!
Not all media is like the British media I agree they are the worst. They should be prosecuted for bullying people and ruining their lives. Of course the RF play Tutsi with them. How anyone can live in that orchestrated puppets show makes me cringe. I suppose that’s the price one pays for living off the serfs in the land.
@@davidhoward2487 good on you. Such a lot of energy devoted to a miscomprehension

That guy’s purple tie is huge. 😮
My gosh, employees of the Palace so snobby as to decide who and who was not first class royalty! This is hilarious - the pomposity of it all!!
This poor prince with his modern ideas became a prisoner trapped in British tradition. How sad that his ideas were shot down like birds during a hunting trip. Don't like the description of "penniless" when referring to the prince. It's so ghastly and disrespectful that I often wonder how the wedding was allowed.
I liked Philip but I find hunting ghastly 😡

Our queen went on hunting safaris to Africa and posed for a picture together with Philip, next to a dead tiger! There were many safaris!
Very odd that the Queen Mother was anti-German since the Royal Family's origin is VERY GERMAN.
The Queen Mother was British down to her bootstraps. I think if you look at her heritage you will be hard pressed to find any German blood. You have to go to maternal grandparents to find any ancestor of George VI, her husband, to find any born in Germany.
