RIP Circuit City :(. Those "Welcome to Circuit City, where service is state of the art" commercials still ring in my head from the early 90's. I remember my techno-savvy dad buying EVERYTHING from there in the 90's too, until Best Buy opened in Mobile early this decade and the store layout just appealed more to him and everyone else. They shot themselves in the foot around 2007 when they ditched their knowledgeable higher paid employees in favor of no-nothings who knew nothing about what they were selling (most were texting or playing Wii) Within two years it bled to death. Radio Shack did the same thing some years ago and it's now on life support ravaged by the cancer. Love the commercials here, it brought back some good memories.

I can beat that. I went there in 2004, looking for a prepaid (burner) phone, because I didn't want to sign a contract. They flat out ignored me when I walked up. Then, after I had to break up the conversation the two were having, asking if they had any prepaid cell phones, the guy snaps back "NO!" then returns back to his conversation. I then went to Cingular's store directly and got my prepaid, but about a week after the incident, I went back, and what do I see hanging on an endcap? Prepaid cell phones!
That jerk not only didn't give me the time of day while at work, he also lied about a product they had! He didn't even look, acted like I was bothering him by asking, and when I saw that they indeed had them, I didn't return again until 2008 when they were having their liquidation sale (can't say I blame people for not going there, look how I was treated just a few years prior). Service is state of the art, huh? Not in the mid-2000's!!

I only went to Circuit City once in the early 2000s and their store clerks were the worst. They would follow you around, stalking you from around the corner and constantly asking you if you needed help or what you were going to buy so they could help you make your purchase. I was told that they were paid on commission and that's why they were so aggressive in trying to 'Help' the customers. I can see why they went out of business.

    • @jackson5116

My last visit there before liquidation was in 2004. I went trying to find a prepaid phone, and two employees deep conversation wouldn't give me the time of day. I had to interrupt, and when I asked one of them if they had prepaid, they snapped back "NO!" then went back to their conversation. About a week later when I returned to the store after having to go to a phone store to get a prepaid phone, I found an endcap where they were! They indeed had them, but they not only lost the sale that day, when I saw them hanging there, I was practically irate, and wouldn't step foot in the store again until it started liquidating in 2008.

That's the problem with sales people on commission...you might have some a little too helpful...but I'd rather have that then a employee who isn't knowledgeable on any of the products and doesn't care , because they're like why work hard it's a minimum wage job.

@@functionatthejunction same... I prefer to have employees that know what they're selling and if I have a question could probably help me with it. Over the year's brick n mortar store's decided it was better to have cheap unknowledgeable employees rather than pay extra for employees that could actually help their customers....this is one of the main reasons why places like Circuit city/ RadioShack and Fry's closed their doors. They lost what made them special the knowledgeable and helpful employee and just became electronic warehouses.

When we think of corporate greed or mismanagement we think of workers being hurt or sucked dry by high prices but the greed (or cancer I'll call it) destroys their own company as well. Admittedly the recession contributed to it in Circuit City's case, but poor or non existent customer service led to their downfall before it happened.

I believe there was 2 Lucky's in San Jose, but there is only one that is still here in the southside, in the suburbs, I saw it went from Lucky's in the late 90s, then Albertson's in the early 2000's then Lucky's again, but the downtown one was the one I always went too

Circuit City's "The Anthem" is awesome. I've been wanting to find the full version of their old theme song for awhile. Does anyone know who wrote it?

I don't remember them having appliances. I guess they stopped selling them at some point.
