@@ianpdavis Oh cmon! Really?! all done in post?! Do you honestly believe that?! Why does Mark King, who’s an amazing bassist and vocalist need a Lee Sklar or a Guy Pratt?
Yes, Phil Gould: a criminally underrated drummer. What a player! He should be one of the greats IMO. Incredible feel and groove. One of my all time favourite drummers!
Late response but these guys another planet we all know this but mark king is the best musician I have ever seen. He is a force of nature and he never dropped a beat and what a voice.
@Joe Geezer Only drummer Joe. The subtleties ( forgive spelling) of Boon and Phil combined with Mark and Mike made level. The start of Chinese Way straight from Children from Phil has always been bloody superb...and I know We are not sure what's real or on-stage and filmed anymore re this 'Wembley86' . It's still The Best Live Performance Video ( ish) anyway ...and We all know and have seen how good they are live anyway. Pursuits from Rockpalast 84 anyone??!
@Joe Geezer night Mate. Case in point...there is a version of Eyes Waterfalling on here where he fucks it completely. Only live version of Machine Stops is Gary too... but that ain't bad. If You ever find a live version of Machine Stops with Phil please post Fella. All the Best.
I was at this concert. Loved it so much went back 3 days later. They are as good now as they were then. Would love to see the original four together that would be awesome. Remember them coming to my hometown of Hitchin at the regal which is now a doctors surgery lol. that would have been around 82 and a fresh jazz funk band.
I saw them in Ipswich recently but was disappointed a little. Mark's vocals weren't quite there and they looked a bit jaded. The sound engineer got it wrong ,in my opinion.I was also at this concert ( 1986 ) and remember fondly how good they were.I am a big fan of L42 and you can't argue with their large catalogue of fabulous songs. Thanks L42.

So smooth! I just wish to some day experience a live convert at least partly as great as this. I was born in 1991 and I realize the best music was made before I was even born. Damn it. Thanks Level 42 and other oustanding bands for your music!
my favorite live version of The Chinese Way: Mark's bass and voice are devastating like a sandstorm ,Phil drums are Confucian precision, Boon dispenses guitar wisdom and Mike's prophet work and solo are pure Chinese red silk! The Chinese legend grows.................
When I first heard this song was on the holiday we took by the seaside in 1987 when I was 9 years old and me and my sister would go to the children's activities at the resort. I remember staring into the RGB CRT projector as this song played thinking of the profoundness of the lyrics.
42 were utter brilliance live! they defined the word 'tight' and has the UK since produced a finer rhythm section than King and Phil Gould! People wonder why my generation bangs on about how good the 80's were well just watch this!

I remember the TOTP Chinese Way performance by the band was the very first thing I taped on my new VHS recorder. It had a wired not ir remote and was state of the art tech at the time. How times have changed!
One of my all time favourite bands whilst growing up! Saw them live at the Hammersmith Palais and they sounded so good that my friend and I were totally impressed! We were so close to the stage that Mark and Mike were able to see us cheering them on and we were going crazy, it was so much fun that it still makes me laugh now when I remember it! For some reason in the Palais the auditorium was so hot that we nearly passed out with dehydration and travelled back on the tube just thinking about drinking a gallon of water! The 80's were probably one of the best times to be growing up as the music, bands and culture was so diverse but not in a dangerous way really, I miss those times.
I still have no idea how I managed to record this from the radio (TDK D-90). It was broadcast on BBC? Maybe. Still takes some beating as one of the best live gigs ever.
Lovely though this is, I prefer watching the live performances which haven't been remixed or even re-dubbed afterwards. The Rockpalast DVD of 1983 for instance where the sweat's pouring off and you feel like you're there. Great crowd view at 7:37 though. It was about getting the music out to higher numbers by this stage. :)
All their drummers are baddass. I've seen two: Phil Gould. Love him. What a great player. And, Gary Husband: ferggetabboutit. Best over player ever born. Was there another?

Mark King’s double concentration is uncanny! Doing those bass lines and singing lead vocals at the same time! Amazing!
That was all done in post! He sang live but the real bass lines were being played behind the stage by Guy Pratt ...or Lee Sklar....allegedly

Less is more and Phil proves it here
Absolutely. Incredible feel and makes it look so effortless.
Jeff Porcaro was a big fan of his playing apparently

No wonder the 80's were so good...these guys were writing one good song after another. They're as good live as in the studio. Excellent band.
pretty much my favorite band ever. Im a mid - late 80s child and my dad used to play their stuff all the time when I was growing up

Big big big Mike 🌀👍👍👍
I'll love this concert til I die. Just the best.
Phil Gould is so deep in the pocket he runs the risk of never finding his way out :-) Pure brilliance!
Phil was the best for level 41
Agreed. His pocket on the studio version of Physical Presence is probably the ultimate.

Apart from being a drummer of fucking unbelievable skills, Philip Gould is a bloody absolutely amazing lyric writer. Listen...what a band.
Drummer is outstanding.
RogerM1965 Yep. He's well-loved by L42 fans who listen deep. I love just focussing on what Phil's doing.
ahhhhhhhhhhhh takes me back to the good years in life, school, and level 42, life was so uncomplicated hey!
Boon was so, so cool. Let Mark take the lead but played his parts like a dream. Part of the original dream team.

Both of these songs are great, I love them lots. ✌️☺️
I keep to myself
what I might share with others
but they don't seem to understand
I open my mouth
to rediscover
that I don't have the words at my command
holding out
for a world so much better
but I'm a stranger in a stranger's land
all my friends have sold out
couldn't handle the pressure
counting their blessings trying to salvage what they can
Children say - children say
we open our minds as one
but one more day - slips away
why don't the dreams of the young never come to be
When I overhear
my parents conversations
well I'm struck by the things they say
it seems they traded the years
for mere complications
who ever thought it could end this way
they close the door
but they can't lock it
'cause something of their childhood remains
and they've felt it before
when the man in their pocket
counted the cost of their material gains
Children say - come what may
be strong for the friends you've known
but one fine day - (not) far away
will we remember the love we used to own
Children say - children say
we open our minds as one
as one more day slips away
why don't the dreams of the young never come to be
Well you knew what I was saying
but did you know what it meant
when you saw that look in my eye
did you know it was heaven sent
was it all a waking dream
all that time we must have spent
well I guess it must have been
somehow that feeling came and went
Children say - come what may
be strong for the friends you've known
but one fine day - (not) far away
will we remember the love we used to own
Children say - children say
we open our minds as one
as one more day - slips away
why don't the dreams of the young never come to be
Children say - children say
we thought it would never go
as one more day - slips away
who ever thought we could be so lonely
Take a journey back in time
Leave the western world behind
Cross the mountains to Peking
Where the paper lanterns gently swing
The Chinese way
Who knows what they know
The Chinese legend grows
The Chinese way
Who knows what they know
The Chinese legend grows
My eyes wide open
I feel a breeze
Words softly spoken
In Cantonese
Standing at the master's side
Then with patience he confides
Secret knowledge, sacred ways
Pearls of wisdom from the dragon days
I could never lie
For honor I would die
Following the Chinese way
So many years ago
Heroes ruled the world
(Some died for love in a cruel world)
They were the only ones in a cruel world
I could never lie
For honor I would die
Following the Chinese way
From the mountains to Peking
Where the paper lanterns gently swing
The Chinese way
Who knows what they know
The Chinese legend grows
The Chinese way
Who knows what they know
The Chinese legend grows
The Chinese way
Who knows what they know
The Chinese legend grows
The Chinese way
Who knows what they know
The Chinese legend grows

How many people can fit into Wembley? Lots of equipment there for Mike so this must be right at the pinnacle before Phil and Boon left.

Still as magnificent as ever - check out their Sight & Sound concert at the Regal, Hitchin - seminal.
This tune could stand alone on Phil's drum track...good Lord...dude is unconscious. . GD. Absolutely no idea how pulls it off..
HELL YEAH!!
