    Explosive manhole covers are most often caused by city gas leaking into electric service utility vaults and duct banks. So most often it’s not sewers and methane, but natural gas, which is even more reactive and flammable. And short circuits and small discharges happen all the time in high-voltage cables.

    You see the dashcam perspective of a car driving down a rural american road. And then suddenly **BOOM** all manholes spit small bits of mud (or poop?) about ten metres into the air. The manhole covers themselves didn't go flying, but they didn't lay perfectly on the holes anymore either.

      the bumper underneath is absolutely cracked just as the uncovered portion, they said it themselves, its elastomeric, or stretchy, its not a shock absorber and you can see during the slow motion front bumper test it flexed quite badly. All the bedliner did was flex with the bumper but since its elastic it just popped back into place and looked untouched. While the bumper underneath still took all the force of the impact. In the side door crash test you can see the results clearly, it kept with the door however the bedliner looked "untouched" and clean, with smoother looking dents than the wrinkled plain side.

    Forget gas explosions ... Small potatoes. Many, many years ago sitting down to Sunday roast whilst it was raining cats, dogs cows and horses (this was in my home town on the coast of South Wales ... Only Ireland's West coast is wetter) and without warning a loud bang and the manhole cover right outside our house, about 40 feet from our dining room window, shot into the air by about 40 feet, followed by a thunderous roar as a two foot six diameter column of water spewed into the air almost as high!
    We lived on a hill, almost at the bottom with several hundred houses above us (max 120 feet above) with all their groundwater feeding into the main drain running downhill outside. I dread to think what might have happened had a vehicle happened to pass at the very moment it exploded! 🤔🙄😱😱

      If it was awfully risky for him, they wouldn't have done it. Of course they could've tested it with a remote rig of some sorts but that's not as much fun to watch. Provided the likelyhood of injury is very low, they do it. Now, have they done things that turned out dangerous in the moment? Oh hell yeah, saw Grant nearly eviscerate himself once in an episode but it was also because they were DIY-ing the living shit out of an idea and he came up with something ridiculous. I have a Mythbusters inspired idea.
    Im watching MB today, looking out the window at the snow and all the tree litter in my yard.
    Picture a potato gun that shoots pykrete-like projectiles. I feel like a mulch of leaves, branches/twigs, bark chips, coniferous tree needles, and cones mixed with water and frozen might work. You could easily mould these 'bullets', freezing the mixture in a section of pipe. One could improve accuracy by rifling the PVC barrel.
    Of course, I would use some type of mesh in combustion chamber.

    I was walking early one morning in Manhattan, a couple of blocks below Canal street, and a manhole cover blew about 15 feet in the air like a 200 pound tiddly wink. Made quite a noise, too. It happens in NY pretty often in the days after a heavy snowfall, and the root cause is salt water getting into the under ground power lines. What I think is happening is that the power electrolyzes the water and produces hydrogen and oxygen. The explosions are a fact---the explanation is by me.

    In 1996 a car in our street had an overnight petrol leak from it's tank which leaked directly into the drain at the roadside, the car had around 10 gallons of fuel in the tank.
    Around 10am there was an almighty explosion which actually ripped up part of the pavement, 4 manhole covers were sent flying, one of them hitting a brand new car.
    In 2 of the houses the blast caused water and fumes to explode from the toilets.
    Luckily no one was harmed, but yip the underground sewage system can explode violently under certain conditions.

    • @MrMarinus18
      @MrMarinus18 2 місяці тому

      You are making that up cause there isn't anywhere near enough fuel in a car to fill up a sewer. Also gasses from the sewers won't come up through the toilet, it's specifically designed to prevent that. You need to drop something in the toilet itself or otherwise the strain will be taken by the bolts.
      A real sewer explosion was in 1992 in Mexico where gasoline leaked in through a broken fuel line and we are talking thousands of gallons here. After leaking in for weeks it exploded with a tremendous amount of force ripping open streets, throwing cars in the air, and collapsing buildings throughout 3 blocks. The official death count is 212. Looking at pictures it's like a bomber had gone through or there had been a heavy earthquake. A famous picture is of a semi that was thrown on top of a 2 story building.
      Large scale methane explosions in sewers are very rare though because methane is very picky with it's flammability range and since it's so light it wants to rise to the surface so if there is any way for it to escape it will.

    • @obviousmaths4368
      @obviousmaths4368 2 місяці тому +1

      "there isn't anywhere near enough fuel in a car to fill up a sewer" I wouldn't be so sure.
      Back of the envelope calculation. 10 gallons is about 30 kg fuel. Molecular weight petrol is say about 120 on average. SO about 250 moles. 1 mole of a gas at STP occupies 22.4 L, so about 5,600 L of vapour. The lower explosive limit for petrol is 1.3% So if that 5,600 L was a bit over 1.3% of the total volume we can get an explosion. Total volume would be about 430 m3, or 15,000 cubic feet. It seems plausible that a local section of sewer could be of these dimensions. @@MrMarinus18

      The crack probably wouldn't happen with bumpers that didn't sit outside in the sun and maybe freezing conditions for years, but plastic that sat open to the elements for a while tends to become brittle

    That German Sheperd is actually German or at least German-trained as it seems, as the handler uses commands like "Platz!" and "Aus!" XD

      it's fairly normal to train service dogs in German, it's due to how German words are "pronounced" there's less room for ambiguity and confusion.
      And fyi Dogs usually respond better to single syllable commands/names

    Love the fact that way back when they were filming Jamie was right no recorded sewer explosions from natural cases... Now in 2024 We do have bunch or recorded cases from all over the world where sewers do actually blow up with even bigger booms just because how people changing their ways about what is dumped down the drain.

    The dog is wrongle trained and the handler is also iproper trained.
    For the dog to react faster it's ... Fass, Aus, Sitz, Platz. Not Fass, Aus, Platz.
    This why its wrong. The natural reaction in a dog when attacking is run, bite, pull up, left, right and down. So when you say Platz, the animal will lay down and not have the impulse of letting loose. In the contrary to Sitz, the animal has to let go in order to acheve the automatic survsilence position. After the Sitz you say Platz zu get the animal to submit and relax. This is the proper way to train a dog. My father was the yungest recoconised trainer in germany at the time teceving tecognition of the german chanceler for the achevment. My childhout was dog training.
    As far as the handler is concerned. He was not authority emogh and had little controle over the anal, tgat can leed to mistakes and serious injury in real life. Who will get punished? Both but only one will lose there life. Guess who. This is unacceptable and the american dog handler association in contract with the gouverment should be held responcable to implement proper training methods.
    Honesty i would judge the proformance put to show hear as adequit at best. There is muche to improve. This is upseting to me.
    As far as the contend of the program is concerned, enjoyed it verry muche.

    Why is the officer talking German to a Belgian Sheppard? 🤣
    Do they think because it's a supposedly "German" you have to talk German to them?
    And it's clearly not a pure German Sheppard, those darker colored ones with slightly smaller ears are the Belgium veriant!
    So maby he should learn some French! 😂

      Logistics, if you use the same language as your spoken language for commands then you could issue a command by accident. If you use a different language then every command will require conscious effort, so no mistakes.
