  • The Bio-Hybrid pedal assist e-bike, pedelec quadracycle from Schaeffler Group, due to launch in Germany later in 2020, looks fantastic! In this video I cover 17 reasons I want one including its apparent safety, reliability, comfort, flexibility, visibility, range, maintenance, storage, passenger capacity, security, power, handling, looks, familiarity, durability, feasibility and possible touring potential. Overall it seems a major step up from my current cycle, a Riese and Muller Packster 60 cargo e-bike. The Bio-Hybrid brings some car-like features I miss from my old UK Hyundai IONIQ Electric EV. I also talk briefly about my 3 concerns about the Bio-Hybrid's possible price, weight, and where I would store and park it where I live now in Denmark.
Official details about the Bio-Hybrid are at: biohybrid.com
They are also on UA-cam at: / bio-hybrid
The Bio-Hybrid press/social media team kindly gave permission for their publicity materials to be shown in this video.
Please subscribe if you'd like to see more videos from me and... bye for now!

Thanks for developing this video. I found your review informative and without bias. I am hopeful that the United States Federal Government will update their regulation on quadrangles and allow these type of human powered cycles into the US market place. The US car industry is likely worried this will take away for profits but in a market based economy they should understand the need to adopt to the changes within the wants of people.
I looking forward to view your touring videos. Ride smart and safe
    Take care,
    Scott

One big reason for wanting one is being able to drive this in winter. I cycle a lot even during the cold time of the year. But when the roads get slippery and snow piles up it's nearly impossible with a regular bike to drive around safely. The bio hybrid with four wheels gives you great stability, plus you don't get cold air directly in the face

For the previous one, I would recommend you to maybe make it more interesting with speeding up the ride, because it felt a bit slow for me. Maybe have some narration, where you express your impressions and thoughts about the trip, potentially some historical information and so on.

Thank you, I have been wanting an ebike for the last few years. The cost, will be the biggest problem. But, the bike has to be like a car, shopping, but also easy to get out and on the road without thinking is it going to have enough power to get home. I want help up hills and a little faster and safer at night. But friendly to the environment, but still easy for me to power it, like a normal bike, if i forget or go past it’s recharging time.

Thank you. Very informative. Really like this bike. My aim would be to use it for the 15 mile commute to work. I live in England so this machine would need to come with removable side panels for the wet and windy winter months, where freezing rain can actually come at you horizontally due to high winds. Do you know if this vehicle will have the removable side panels i require? That as well as price is a clincher for me! Otherwise i'll have to keep using the bumpy old public bus. Cheers!

  • @RWBHere
    @RWBHere 3 роки тому +6

As with you, I like a lot about that quadricycle, but would like to see the option of removable sides. It will not be much fun in Winter or heavy rain. Having said that, neither is a bicycle. But removable weather protection on a vehicle like that would be a real selling point for a wider market.
My main concern is the potential price of the Bio-Hybrid. If it turns out to be more expensive to buy than a Twizy, or a used Zöe or Leaf, as in the case of that U.K. offering (for an eye-watering £15,000), then its main market would be riders with plenty of spare money, and who have no driving license. You might even be able to buy a new electric car with 250 km range for that price, within a couple of years.

What a great idea. So with charging, pedalling and regen, you should be able to get quite a long range out of these things. The only thing needed is infrastructure to support them, which we lack here in Australia, and I'm not sure I'd want to be competing with traffic in Sydney in one of these, unless it was in the inner suburbs. The only upside here is that Ioniqs 2nd hand are finally coming down in price as new models enter the market! That's exciting and hopefully they will come into a genuinely affordable price bracket sooner or later.

Thanks. I just hope it becomes possible to try one of these. Think it’s fairly dependent on having good, separated cycle lanes. Otherwise it’s too slow to keep up with regular road traffic. Fascinating area of development overall :)

It's an interesting concept, but here in the UK the standard two wheel bicycle is still more able to cope with country trails ,gravel, pinch points, gates, the two wheel bicycle has stood the test of time and with more being produced with electric modes it will prove a more viable solution .

I think this Electric cycle is very attractive looking, and the turning circle seems very good, and it seems to be very useful and versatile in its everyday use, parking, again I don't think this a really a problem with it's small footprint, as for the waght I would feel a little more secure with that extra little bit of waght myself all in all, a fine looking machine, only sticking point maybe the price, but I think it would more than pay for its self in the long term 😊.

A Gotway or Segway EUC Electric Unicycle they are legal in Denmark might be your answer. Easy to take on a bus train or taxi/uber. Park it under your desk. Long range fairly fast and you dont get tired. You could tow kids in a trailer or push them in a jogger cart. Which can also fold up for vehicles. Thule makes some of the best Joggers but they are pricy.

Very interesting - thanks! Any chance of your test driving the Bio-hybrid? I wonder about wind resistance - fore and aft, but especially cross winds. That open cabin is convenient and light-weight, but also potentially a wind sock. This EV/E-bike crossover area is very interesting. Battery weight and costs are coming down and power increasing. This will help.

Thanks. Yeah, I would LOVE a test ride of one! I contacted Bio-Hybrid while making this video. We’ll see if it becomes possible in future (once travel restrictions change etc.). The rain cover on my Packster 60 (shown in the video) really catches the wind. But it’s not rigid so it flexes rather than redirects the wind. Plus my Packster is 60+ kg lighter than the Bio-Hybrid. Perhaps weight + rigidity will help here?

I think this is the best ebike with 4 wheels so far. Mainly because it is tall, so you are seen in traffic. Secondly because it can carry a second adult. All it is missing are doors and a heating system. They should also make a faster s-pedelec version with 4000 watts and 45km/h top speed.
Edit: For the money, I think the Podride is going to be better. It will be much cheaper, fully enclosed, have a heater and easily be able to take a larger motor if you want to upgrade.

The maximum speed an E-bike can go in the US on electric alone is 20mph or 32kph. This carrying capacity is perfect, it can haul way more than I would probably ever require. NOW.
The pedaling power can be increased to as fast as you can pedal here in the US, but the motor itself can't accelerate you faster than the listed above on a straight. That being said, if they add customization options later for said region difference, then the limit could be increased to allow the motor to travel faster.
Also as a concern for me, I live in a decently wet part of the US where it rains almost all the time, so having the option to also add in doors or zipper screens would be wonderful as well as a way to prevent splashing from below. If they could fully enclose this monster of an e-bike, I would buy one faster than an average heartbeat. It looks (from the 360 view) that the entire front and the lower part of the pedal zone is closed off, so if they could add some floorboards near the drive train as well as some velcro or zipper doors attached to that and the roof, then I could fully enclose this and drive it at any time of day or any weather.
If this could be enclosed and allow for increased max speed due to region differences it would be the absolute perfect vehicle for me. It could go on bike lanes/paths, carry far more than I would ever make use of, and allow me about a 60 mile (100km) ride time. Shame this is such a new machine, I want to get one as soon as possible.
Things it should have to be the absolute perfect commuter/utility bike:
1: Option to fully enclose it to protect you from the elements.
2: Regional speed increase/decrease options. (some places might want you to go slower, some allow you to go faster. So it would be nice if we had the option to change that based on our home country's specifications.)
3: Solar panel charging. (Allows it to be charged when not in use during the day, or while you're out shopping/exploring. Allowing you to get just that little bit extra ride time in.)
4: (This is a big one) Perhaps an entire new version later down the line specifically designed for nothing but exploration and riding. A version with an enhanced motor and longer battery life to allow for site seeing. Absolutely no utility whatsoever. (That's what the pick-up version is for.)

  • @telocity

I agree with most of you reasons. Drum brakes in front wheels would be nice, they tend to last longer and are out of the weather and less easily damaged. I still think the armadillo has a better suspension and they also have a enclosed version for taxi service. I think for long distance trip the armadillo would win, someone has gone from Europe to China with it I've read. Also the power of the Bio-Hybrid is of great concern to me. I live in Southern California and I don't think the government even has thought about vehicles like this. But at the moment the 750w limit on E-Bikes is limiting for cargo bikes as we have to deal with a lot of hills. Not as bad as San Francisco, but more than enough that my cargo bike barely makes it up some of the hills and can not even make it up my steep driveway. I don't mind limits on the speed, but power? So annoying. Then the last BIG issue, PRICE. China SAIC Motor has come out with a Electric Car that goes 100+ miles and costs $5000 US dollars and have sold more than 100,000 units already. Granted it may not be sold in the west for years if ever, but shows that costs for a light E-vehicle/bikes need to be brought down well below the $10,000 US dollar mark if they are going to be competitive in the future. Long term viability will come down to manufacturing cost.

  • @TheVelomobileChannel

    Pretty interesting vehicle. Few observations:
That upright seating position isn't probably much more comfortable than regular upright bike. The seat is larger than upright bike seat, so at least that part is more comfortable. But I guess it's not as comfortable as more reclined seat would be.
On rainy day your ass will be wet. Yes it has mudguards at the front, but there will be some water spraying from the front wheels which will land on you.
Fully enclosed drivetrain is best thing ever. No need to wash the chain :D And if this has belt drive, it's even better. Not much maintenance needed.

    • @ZeroTailpipe

Great points! The rider seat is perforated by the look of it. That should help. Not sure about the passenger seat. Overall I’d certainly be happy to try it out for them in wet Denmark to see what weather-proofing issues arise :) Be great time see why tried in wintry conditions in Finland too ;)

@@Chapooski You're right but in this case it's a very small niche market, for the happy few able to pay 10000€. That means that the effect of such vehicles sold at these high prices on pollution and climate change will be close to zero. If we want a true "ecological" effect, the vehicles must be practical (two seats, ability to take the goods bought at the super, all weather, all ages; enough speed for being used more than 10 km around the house) at prices low enough for a mass market.
It's the case of the Citroen Ami. You can buy it with a first paiement of 3750€ plus a leasing of 20€ a month (yes 20 €). You can ride it under a torrential rain or in cold weather safely with an acceptable confort and visibility. You can take one child or your old arthritic grandma with you. You can go to the grocery and come back with a full caddy. It can be used by a teenager over 14 for going to high school at 15 km. It can be used by a senior. Brief it's practical and affordable.
Myself for my short distance displacements at Paris I use an electric bicycle when the weather permits it. The bicycle can be parked anywhere, and it's even faster than a car in the overloaded streets so I do not need more than 25 km/h.
Such small hybrid quadricycle is finally too wide and too slow for circulating in a town with not dedicated lanes at the right width, because in the narrow cyclist lanes the cyclists will hate them because too wide, and in the streets automobilistes will hate them also because too wide and far too slow. Finally it accumulates all the cons of a car and a bicycle with none of the pros.

@@pabloricardodetarragon2649 I fell in love with the Ami design as soon as I saw it online, but as wonderful as the Ami is you still end up closed up in a car stuck dealing with automotive traffic ALL the time rather than enjoying the outdoors and dealing with automotive traffic SOME of the time.
I think this video (17 Reasons....) was about using transportation that still falls into the fringes of the bike category and not about the cheapest electric vehicle option.
My wife started commuting to work (17 km round trip)) back in 2018 using an electrically assisted recumbent trike equipped with panniers for cargo, she loved doing this immediately and hated when the weather got below freezing as that was her threshold temperature for riding her trike.
Her trike is 37" at its widest (handlebars) and this has never caused problems on her commute, the Bio-Hybrid is less at about 35" wide.
I am not sure if you took a look at the Riese and Muller cargo bike video I referenced, but the story it tells is much like my wife's experience.
      ua-cam.com/video/hFrDjAZCWI0/v-deo.html
Riese and Muller cargo ebikes are very high end, priced in the 5,000 - 8,000 Euro range and yet the company has a huge assembly factory in Germany and sells thousands of bikes every year.
Yes, Riese and Muller cargo ebikes are definitely a niche product, but they still sell very well.

      @pabloricardodetarragon2649 3 роки тому

@@Chapooski That's the problem with those alternative vehicles when you want something different. In fact each one has it's own pros and cons. About the price in context at least in France where the wages are stagnant and even lowering, electric vehicles must be affordable.
For example I paid my NCM-Leon Cycles model Hamburg 989€, so the ratio quality/price is pretty good, the bicycle is well made with good components (7005 alu hydroformed frame, disk brakes, front suspension, good suspended seat, rear Bafang hub, battery 36V 13 ah), well finished and works nicely. I would not pay more for a bicycle. This bike is sold by a German company, assembled in France with Chinese components as 99% of the bicycles. I wanted a normal frame, but made in 7005, an alloy that can be welded and so repaired with no need of post treatment like the 6061 alloys. I wanted also components I could fix and change easily. I wanted also the possibility of installing a 500W mid motor (and register as fast bike LE1) Brief something I'm not depending of NCM for the spare parts into 2 years.
A lot of electric bicycles, trikes and quadricycles are frankly overpriced. You can get correct electric scooters around 2500€ and trikes should be at 4000€. For example the 3 wheels Doohan Itango is sold in this moment at 2200€ and it seems correctly made.
I'm designing a personal enclosed tadpole trike, monoplace, wheels 20", 3 disk brakes with repartitor front rear, full suspension, 1000 watts 48V motor, 2 batteries 48V 20 Ah. All that fitting in the rule L1E (E mopeds 45 km/h). Buying all the components at retail price, including the steel and alu tubes plus the marine 3 mm plywood and the lexan of the enclosing, I have for less than 2000€, including import taxes and shipping. For example at retail price in China the complete front suspension all included with shocks, direction, disk brakes, calipers, master cylinder costs less than 230€ including the shipping to Paris. The Bafang 1000 watts hub wired for big torque with a max speed of 50 kmh on a 20" fat wheel , with all the electronics and wires plus shipping is less than 450€. A mid motor Bafang BBS2 750 Watts is also around 400€. These retail prices show that there is no justification, even with European wages for assembling, to have "ordinary" bicycles at 3500€...
A tadpole trike like mine could be sold well under 4500€ if normal "industrial" prices were the rule in bicycle industry.
I was naval engineer and this kind of design is a piece of cake for rookie engineer compared to a fast patrol boat, or even a simple' motorcycle.

I like the look of this vehicle, but I don't know how practical it would be in the UK - there's not many cycle lanes where I live. Three things spring to mind: 1) Would anyone insure such a vehicle? 2) Other cyclists on cycle lanes would have very little space to pass, so they may resent you! 3) If you have to use it on the road, car drivers will resent you!
Having said that, 25 mph (was it mph or kms/hr?) would be normal in town and for the daily commute, so maybe very useful in these situations.

I would also be concerned with the limited power you can legally use. Can you imagine 2 adults or a full cargo load with only 250 watts? Could you do a comparison to the City Q as well? I think these vehicles are exactly what we need in our cities.

    • @ZeroTailpipe
      @ZeroTailpipe  3 роки тому

There’s interesting wording about the 250W on their website - there’s clearly some flexibility around peak power, but that’s the expected average over a certain time period...

I believe it would be difficult, since the only place you could get it at the moment is Germany. But definitely when the lock down is over might be an interesting idea to go and visit the factory.

I wouldn't necessarily expect a vehicle like this use off the shelf bicycle components. There are a bunch of good engineering reasons not to choose standard bicycle tires, brakes etc for a relatively heavy four wheeled vehicle since there are very different forces impacting the components when compare to a normal bike. Given Schaefflers record of focusing on quality and precision with their products, I'd assume the vehicle will be engineered to be as reliable as feasible, especially since they are targeting companies like delivery services as costumers.
As for the price, I'd expect that thing to be somewhere close to a twizzy. I don't think it'll be a cheap vehicle, and I haven't read anything reliable about the price, but in a German technology magazine a Schaeffler Employee said they wanted to stay in the pricing range of premium pedelecs.

There is a hidden advantage that you might not be aware of. A German regulatory approval is more or less directly transferable to Denmark. I suspect that is actually the case for most, if not all, of EU. If that is indeed the case then they almost instantly have a significantly bigger market.

  • @adamt195

Yes yes yes. I want one here in the US, but under current laws, anything with 4 wheels is illegal as a bicycle. If they made them legal here, I would love to have one. Or have a us competitor make something with the same concept. Personally I would like to see an "americanized" "XXL" model. So a 2 seater with a rear bed. Could be a smaller bed than the cargo model, but larger than the passenger model. And of course in america we can use 750w motors and go up to 20mph (sometimes 28mph).

A ebike quadricycle is going to be around $10,000. This pushes it above ebike territory but when you compare it to the cost of an electric car, its quite affordable. This is really a lifetime investment.

Why isn't the pedaling charging the battery? Seems strange it doesn't have solar, but at the same time that would depend on the generation of the panel and size that would make a difference...

Pricing for this thing is simple, what does a Honda 125cc scooter go for? Add 10%. Any more than that is more than it’s worth. If it had a throttle and could go highway speeds like a big scooter, it would be worth a bit more.

In my opinion it's way too opened, and in facts I read in their website that they're working on some accessories for closing the cabin completely 😉. But one thing I don't agree with at all is the first point: car drivers do see sport cars such as Lamborghini Ferrari Lotus etc, and they can also see pits, cats, dogs, children... The fact that they don't expect to see a narrow vehicle at a low height off the ground doesn't mean that they don't see it; paradoxically, the fact that it's unexpected make it much more noticeable and drag even more attention from the car driver. I can tell you this by personal experience. The only real danger is when you are very very close to the truck-like cars that are considered trendy today, for example when getting out of parkings. On the other side, keeping the center gravity high is much worse, because either the vehicle is very wide, or it's very heavy, or the risk of tipping over for an emergency maneuver is too high.
