Installing Mode Carbon Front Lip on E92 M3
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 сер 2024
- My Mode Carbon front lip finally came in and it's not 100% ready to install. You need to be ready to either remove the front underbelly or front bumper to get the Mode Carbon lip installed on your E92 M3.

if you dropkick that lip off the bumper please do a video about that
love how you get pissed.. I get that way myself with these projects. "Good thing I have this 75 foot work bench and no room to do anything."
So true... I think we all do.
true story ... had a 93 civic si , wanted this rear top fin for months , finally got it , admired it for days .. thought it was the most badass wing i had ever seen , followed the instructions to the letter , no screws needed just use the tape supplied they said .... mounted it , stared at it for hours marvelling in its awesomeness .. got on the highway and headed to the city to show it off , somewhere between house and destination the wing blew off .... :(
Ha, ha.... We've all been there. Mine was a black $3000 Porsche LED bouncing down the road.
Ha ha. Awesome read that I knew how it was going to end.
Matt, I have a similar lip on my E92. After placing the 3M tape on the item I’m installing, I take a little heat to it with a blow dryer, enough to get it to a “gummy” consistency. This creates a much stronger bond between the two surfaces once cured. I have tried this method going on 4 different BMW’s with so many miscellaneous lips, spoilers etc. Just wanted to share with you for future reference!
Dope setup bro check out my channel maybe ?
Matt having to drill the holes on top of a cardboard box because his workbench is full is the most relatable moment for sure
I’ve installed a handful of lips and my recommendation is to put another screw from the bottom (center) but closer towards the front of the lip, this will hold it flush to the bumper under high speeds. Hope this helped!
too thick. I believe
There was a bottle of soap out of place on the shelf back there.
Omar Husein yup, I saw that too, right next to the bread crumbs... his shop is a wreck!
Mode Carbon is so highly touted on the forums, but the fact that they don't come drilled like a $300 ebay lip is pretty disappointing. I'd be so afraid of cracking a lip that expensive lol.
Looks great! Thank you for the stellar review and we look forward to seeing that lip hang on well over 160mph.
Watched this several times now, my M3ntal Performance frontlip will arrive before the weekend and i need every advice i can take and i feel much more confident now, thanks man, great video!
This lip has held up better than any lip I've ever done. Still on there with no sag today.
I just finished watching the filter and intake and this was up, awesome
I lost my first lip after the first drive on the highway (used 3m tape and some screws) I said I am not throwing away another $600 lip so I did it right, took the front bumper off, drilled from the inside of the bumper down, used tape AND self tapping screws. Also used some black sealant on the seam between the lip and the bumper for good measure and to keep air from separating the two at speed. Its VERY solidly attached doing all this and I have no worries about it coming off.
I put my Challenge lip on 3 times before finally using the 3M adhesion promoter wipes. That stuff was they key for me and the lip hasn’t moved in a year since.
I thought so as well. My Challenge was off and on the car 4 times. The 3rd and 4th I used adhesion promoter. I refused to give up, but it popped off over and over even with it.
Wet out is key. Clean, temp, pressure and time. Promotor wont work still if there is alot of clear coat on the bumper. OEM tend to have clear coat build up on the underside where the suppliers are trying to prevent orange peel on the lead edges
Did the Challenge lip not come with mounting holes? I just picked one up from RKP and it has the holes so I would assume it will stay put.
Matt's personality is what keeps this channel going haha great work once again!
Ha, ha... Thanks man.
M3 coming along very nicely
Nice vid. Lip looks nice. I know what you mean with the tape. I started heating the tape a little right before I press it on, never separated. Also, tried the perl with no dilution as a tyre dressing yesterday like you did, really like the effect. 👍🏼
Lip looks good. Enjoy your DIY videos
I have the same lip and want to state this. If you spend a decent amount of time about 100mph this really produces downforce. I used 4 bolt locations with 3/4” washers to sandwich it to the bumper. It riled the pumper in wholes at 3 of the bolt locations directly around the washers. Not from the edge like tearing paper but directly where the bolts were so a serious amount of force did this. I drive on our highways daily between 90 and 130 so the first over time cause the tears and subsequent joints. The splitter dragged on the highway and by the time I pulled over it scraped it to death.
My solution is to created an aluminum strip, that will be the fastener location area, and bend the ends or weld end pierces that can be attached to the subframe to ensure the downforce is not being applied to the plastic bumper but something much stronger. I was very upset BUT surprised at the same time that it actually worked. Driving after at those speeds I can feel the front end floating more as I have the BMW carbon truck lip that is also definitely legitimate and produces downforce. Without the front splitter there is an imbalance that takes getting used to once you are accustomed to the set. I’m in the process of rebuilding the lip and new attachment. Driving at autobahn speeds regularly over time will lead to problems so keep an eye on the fastener locations if you keep it the way you did it here. Using tape o my is a joke unless the car is for show or driven properly once in a blue moon. Bright side is the rear and front aero bits work as well as they look. The intake also improves induction sound as carbon has a different frequency is resonates at. It is effective and allows much more laminar flow compared to the stock low quality parts. I change out the filter every 12k miles FYI.
Make sure to update your impressions of the intake and all other bolt on’s! I’m so happy you too now have my favorite M3 and love it.
I am really looking forward to the video when the lip gets loose.......but it looks great, no question about it!
Looks fantastic
OUR Bimmer is getting there, pardner 😂
Looks great !
I'm sure a majority of us would have liked to see you punt a $900 lip in the trash haha
Ha, ha...
Would've loved to see some rage outtakes at the end of the video 😂
Good work, keep it up.
These install videos raise my blood pressure
I always warm up the 3m double side tape up with a heat gun before removing the protective layer, it sets it up and bond 10x better
Could have stacked a second layer of 3m double side tape on top of what they had preinstalled to take up the gap where it wasn't contacting the bumper. Keep up the great work and excellent videos 👍
As long as you have a ramp and a dozen helpers - piece of cake!
Such a nice guy to work with
Have a look at a rivnut or nutsert gun, would make a really clean job of that. you wont have to use self tappers.
I got one a few months ago, once you have one you will use it all over the shop.
Another great video Matt. What about considering putting a seal around the top of the lip to fix the gap between where it meets the bodywork? That may help secure it given the tape may fail?
Really loving this M3. The performance seats will look and feel amazing. Everything you're doing to this car would also be my choice 😎
It think this one is going to stay put. Fingers crossed...
When you said you'd drop kick it off xD
matt, taking the front bumper off is like 7 more screws. take the front tires off to get easier access to the screws behind the headlights. it is much easier to take the bumper on/off with the felt already on it, and you just unclip the wire hangers (like you discovered).
also, while you have the bumper off, you can take the transmission cooler blockoff plate off (you can see it in the beginning of the vid).
Try drilling with a small drill bit first like an 1/8". It makes staying in location mush easier.
HI GOOD MORNING. Where did you buy that front bumper lip? Which brand? I appreciate your reply.
Matt if you do this type of install often. You might want to buy or make some locating pins. Screw into holes with points that mark location on the piece you’re adding.
I need those! I've never heard of that.
So I bought a e92 m3 second hand. The previous owner clearly didn’t know how to drive so the bottom- front portion where the lip would mount is chewed up a bit and missing that large black piece you took off. My solution will be Downstar hardware. Can you recommend a hardware spec to mouth a front lip?
Goto see it on the ground with some different angles before I can say if i like it or not. Great job on the install.
I looks really, really good.
"I love the smell of fiber glass, oOO smells good!, to bad its in my skin now" 😂
Where I can get a front bumper for my bmw 335xi sedan 2008 i want the m3 style
Im so scared to fit my carbon splitter.
Just in case i go wack it off on a speed hump.
Had it for 6 years never put it on.
:(
Matt you could post a 10 hour long video and I’d still watch the entire thing. And man I’d be freaking out with all those gaps. Meticulous at its best !
How many extra mph achieved at the top? Awesome car enjoy
BMW bumpers are easy to take off... I do work in a body shop but still...
Lots of little bolts though
Dont use any tape. Remove bumper and do it right or do it twice.
One word........FLEXTAPE!
Cy Murph 😂👍
You could of used a heat gun to soften the tape and it will stick better.
How did you stop yourself polishing the bumper behind the lip 😳
What wheel cleaner do you recomand if the wheel are coted with gyeon q2m rim coat? Is the sonax full effect bad for the coat?
I don't like Full Effect, but you can use any use pretty much any wheel cleaner on it.
Pro tip - heat up the sticky surface off the double sided tape with a flame or heat gun right before you adhere it to whatever you're adhering it to. The heat makes the bond more permanent.
That's a darn good idea.
Did you happen to see that shortly before you made this video, RKP (sold through IND) bought out Challenge and is now manufacturing the front lip again (among other things)? Same price as ModeCarbon (and comes with the damn holes haha). Thinking about it on my E90!
Yep, IND bought all of the Challenge designs!
Hot damn that blue is so beautiful. I search the used car market for a LeMans blue E92 but they are not tryin to be found.
75 inch work bench and no room to do anything. LOL!
Hey ceramic seal it. Would help with the cracks
Invest in getting 3 m adhesive it's incredible
Taking the front bumper off would have been far less frustrating. Its a 15min job
Hey Matt, do you know of any detail shop in Los Angeles?. Thanks.
I don't know anyone specifically.
Yeah, drilling fresh carbon fiber isn't a settling feeling but it'll be worth it :D
Matt will you be looking for another rear diffuser?
I won't. I was always on the fence about it. Once I saw it on the car, my decision was made.
I would have taken the Bumper off much easier. But I am not a fan of lips on the M3. It’s such a good looking car clean
It'll suck if the 3M tape doesn't touch the bumper and it collects dust...
Oh shit dang Matt ya that's fuckn nuts.
Carbon fiber front lips are the epitome of frustration. I had one fall off on the highway at 90mph one time :)
Yep...this is like my 50th one, and it always blows. I'm a glutton for punishment.
Rivnuts would come in handy instead of self tap screws.
this is really how modifying cars goes hahahaha.
looks nice i would have used sika-flex(it´s window glue) then it would never come off(the stuff is black so you would not see it ones it on
regards
Sören
You took the bumper off? lmao Guess I'm a diy genius. I just took a dab of paint to each bolt. Put lip up to bumper lining up the front, find that point then raise the back up. Drop it down and you have your marks. 👍
I would of removed the bumper it takes about 10mins if you know what you’re doing.
How bad does it squeak?
It doesn't. It just made some noise during install.
Ow god, im getting a headache already haha, this is going to be a big fiddle, i guess its not made to just bolt on which you would expect right.
Put some heat on it.. once you do that the 3m tape will stick for sure...
I had a Mode Carbon lip and at speed it deformed, bent down and caught the road, causing it to shatter. Waste of over 1G. I went with RKP and never looked back.
Mode is the biggest junk ever. Same thing on my brothers C63. total junk.
Hello, we urge you to contact us if you have failure with any of our products as we offer many guarantees/warranties to protect our customers.
How longs this one staying on for? 😉😂
I love what you have done to
This car are you planning on selling this beauty
Might wanna add some rivets, added them to my front lip on my C7
That's a good idea. I've never riveted anything. I need to figure out how to do that.
Obsessed Garage not much to it, hand held rivet guns are around $20 at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Drill some more holes out towards the front lip and then rivets. Down force might rip it right off and loosen the screws and before you know it, you ran it over on the highway.
No that's not going to squeak when you hit bumps.
Had my lip for my Z4M on for 1 week. Cracked in half on a pot hole. $300 in the toilet
It should bolt in without tape at all.
Deff worth to spend the money get one molded onto bumber. After the tape fails about the beginning of the 2nd quarter. It'd be some good tubetv. Molded lip m3.💦💧💦🎯😱😂😂😂
Matt, I think you had your drill set to screw and not drill😅
You made such a big deal out of something so small bro, legit used tiger seal and self tappers.
heat it up with a heat gun and mold it better...
Just why would you mess with the beauty like that?
here's a scenario for you: if only the double-sided tape orange cover, would cut in half, when you pulled it halfway there, and had no way of grabbing it . . . . oh my . . . . .
That's the same lip I got on my m3.. 😅
What lip? Send link or list it please
They tell me they don’t pre drill holes because people use them on other cars and have to make their own brackets and stuff for the lip to fit. And if the holes are there for the intended car then they might be in the way of other peoples custom brackets. Which is ridiculous
Why would you want to upgrade the brakes? There is no need for it, unless you track it
But...what if I watch F1 once in a while? Does that give me permission from losers on the internet to spend my money the way I want?
@@ObsessedGarage You can spend your money on whatever you want, i just said its useless. More rotating mass = more weight on the front axle and less performance.
The scratching hurt my ears 😩😩
Liking the small mod videos!
Higher end sports cars have skid pads under the front spoiler. Do you know of an aftermarket company that sells universal ones? The corners of the car see the greatest risks.
Good to see the young man working with you.
Automotive trim adhesive will hold but a more permanent installation. Used on my GTI.

Shop cabinets look like back storage room at Lowe's. Many power washers.
I got a little nervous watching that hole by the edge being drilled. This project becomes pure frustration if that edge splits
Yep... That was dicey.
Oh my god you are soooooo entertaining........." gonna do DICK " .....never failed to lighten my day.
Love from the uk
I didn't know HQ was a power washer dealer and storage center......Kind of looks likes Lowe's in there....
boom
I can't wait to get these out of here.
Someone seems to be out of gallon car shampoo 👀
It looks great, but I'm not impressed with that company at all. No screw holes and 3M tape that everyone knows will fail within a matter of time. I hope it works out for you, but I would have probably sent that crap right back to them.
Gary, we have clearly stated on our website that the lip must be drilled to the corresponding mounting points on the front bumper on our fitting instructions outline.
Matt I would’ve freaking sent the bumper back with the holes that you drilled and tell them in a written letter here you go now you have a pre-drilled guide piece you freaking clowns.
I actually feel a little bad. I called them after doing the pulleys and intake after opening the box and seeing no holes. I think I talked to Sam. He did a great job bringing me back to reality and set me straight. It turned out okay.
Obsessed Garage Totally understand it’s too bad they don’t offer an option even if it’s an up charge just like when you buy a nice car and they put crappy tires on I sure wish manufactures had an option for upgraded tires ect.
Are lips are still at there??🤣
That’s going to do DICK!!! Best line evah!!!
Did you do much research when purchasing the mode carbon lip? It's really not much better than competitors 1/4 of their price... Do they even manufacture their products themselves or do they just purchase from cheaper dealers and re-sell for a giant profit??
I'm really aware of the options out there. I like the look of this one the most.
First!
