This channel is partially what made me so in love with the beautiful ways records can be packaged back when I started collecting in college. Tim's voice plus the passion he put into those videos in the past made me constantly re-watch them when I was still too broke to really have many records of my own. Glad to see the channel picking up again!

btw - I stopped making videos, mainly because they don't get watched much anymore, but also because I have been busy. However, I might need to start selling off some of my collection, so I'm actually thinking of sharing that in a video

This was so helpful to me. I don't have records, but I'm a crafter. I store tons of metal wafer dies and stamp sets in boxes, and needs these shelves. I also stores tons of cardstock, ink pads, ad a bunch of other supplies that will be stored on these shelves. So, while that might not seem like much, it adds up and is super heavy. Now I know NOT to lay them on their sides and to secure them to the wall. I also might add some hardboard to the backing for extra support. Thanks for a great video!

Thank you Gozer!! I purchased the metal dowels from Amazon using the information you provided. The only problem I had was with an 8 cube Kallax, you need 22 dowels. The order of one package from Amazon contains 15 metal dowels ☹️.
So I ordered another package and my unfinished Kallax sits for a couple of days while I wait for the shipment. No problem though, I appreciate your video and the information you provided!!

Never thought about the structural integrity but now my anxiety has me working towards making sure these little boxes are safely holding this heavy wax haha. Thank you!

Once again you are thinking outside the box Tim. Or outside the vinyl jacket. {smile} I am one of the old schoolers who bought the Expedit single column fives and stacked them next to each other. I really loved them. So sturdy. But I never filled them up all the way. I like the lighter look. Anyways. Thank you for the tip. Have a super weekend. Catch up soon~

Okay, when (or if) I ever get Kallax shelves, I am definitely going to put a 1/4" plywood backing on them and/or brace them with 1x3's. Something to make sure they're solid and attached to the wall.

Interesting idea. I have my country and Jazz records in a side standing Kallax in my closet, and never considered they would fail. I've seen a couple of the images of shelves failing, but they have all been the 5 cube x 5 cube shelves that were incorrectly on their sides...but still a good safety precaution. I too worry about the weight on my records on floors. That may be something I address in the future just to be safe.

I know this is over a year ago now, but I finally outgrew my current storage capacity and caved and got a Kallax 2x4 - mainly because I’m not quite at the stage where I need something as big as a 4x4 just yet - but I intend to put it horizontally (the way you’re not supposed to lay it apparently?). I’ve got the metal dowels to upgrade it a little bit as recommended here, but I guess I just need some reassurance that I shouldn’t just stand it up vertically.

  • @markorollo.

I'm thinking of getting a 4x3 (4 up 3 across) kallax for a certain area to either display some small scale statues I've got into, or books, I like that you can put drawers or cupboard doors on them too, I neeeeeeed storage like that.

  • @datmeme8967

You never see these doing a pancake collapse. It's always a horizontal failure. That is easily prevented by securing to the wall. The mounts don't support any load, they just stop and horizontal shifting.

Always use wood glue on/in all the joints. As being swede and have mounted numerous of IKEA products, they do need some glue. If you move, then they will keep the strength and form. If possible, tighten the screws after 2-3 months, if you can reach them. Don’t forget to fasten them to the wall and together. Vinyls and kids are the sugar on the cake.

I bought the square unit’s cross insert, and use 1 insert in 1 kallax cube which act as a way to cut the kallax cube in half (so if records topple they don’t topple much) and I imagine adds support to the small shelves (I have a 2x4 kallax on the side)

  • @wtburns01

I'm curious, now. People keep talking about the Kallax being "incorrectly" set up, but IKEA actually sells the shelves to be laid on their side, or else they wouldn't have included the metal base. Perhaps "incorrectly" only pertains to if used for heavy items, like vinyl records...? I s'pose most folk (or a lot of them, anyway) only put a few coffee-table style books in them with a flower pot or tschotske or something.

I'm getting ready to assemble 5 X 5 Kallax unit (bought mid-pandemic) and saw somewhere that wooden dowels are no longer a thing. If true does that make your stainless steel rod upgrade irrelevant? Or is there still a way to improve stability? And yes, these shelves will be filled to the max.

I’m planning on a 5x5, but trying to decide if any additional strengthening is really necessary or just overkill (also my vinyl will only fill 10 of the cubbies… rest will be books etc).

@@ArtsyFartsyTimo For 15k records you could build them in a day, maybe day and a half, if you have average health - thick plywood, cutter, sander, measuring tape then paint them Black, or Gold for a Bling ambience. Then put some old wooden crates on them, the hipster shops want $30 for them these days but you can get them in Fleas still for 5$ or so. I use grey bricks between them to seperate layers. Takes up a bit more space but you avoid a crooked neck in your dotage and comments such as mine from the style cognoscenti. If you move within 43 miles of Miami, although don't as it is semi Trumpian humid 'shithole' , let me know and I'll come and build them for you for free as long as you can serve up 13 cups of strong stewed black tea, no sugar, dash of FULL CREAM milk and none of this no smoking in the house nonsense!
