- Minnesota concert with English subtitles
Most emigrants didnt clear the land and build houses. They became squatters, or they decided on a place to stay and informed the Land Office in Stillwater. Karl-Oskar and Kristina lived in the beginning in a wooden shack. One couldnt stay there over the winter so Karl-Oskar began immediately to build a log cottage A pioneers life was hard and tough and didnt really suit Robert.
He didnt find his dream of gold. He left with Arvid the first spring for the Californian Gold Rush. Immediately he expected a hard life. They changed a little gold into forged notes. Arvid died here on the journey and Robert returned 4 years afterwards, a broken man.
I only became aware of this song around a month ago and I cannot stop watching this. I go cold when I hear him sing this song, with so much passion and emotion. Absolute stunning performance.
Translation of the narration in the beginning of the video for anyone who may be interested:
"...the gold fields in California.
"But it was a hard and strenuous life that awaited Arvid and Robert.
"What little gold they came across they exchanged for bank notes that turned out to be fake, worthless.
"Arvid died during the journey, and after four years, Robert returned to Kristina and Karl-Oskar as a broken man."
Oh my. I can't stop watching this. How often does this happen?...a beautiful song, a beautiful voice, and a beautiful face. Mesmerizing. And I don't understand a word. Thanks so much for the English translation.
Michael Murphy It's incredible.
Bet you wish someone reminded you, five years later. :-)
It's amazing... through the years I've watched videos with many versions of this song both in Swedish and English, but now at 2024 no artist or singer can make it better than Peter Joback... his voice embodies the young man full of Dreams and ambitions... and yet all the ocean of emotions that touches us in our heart, even when we don't understand the Swedish language... And the amazing and powerful voice!!! Wow... Many other singers with big voices sing it really well, but none of them tells a story and moves us as an audience... Peter does it better than anyone.
I don't know if its because I am Australian, and the songs of Ulvaeus and Andersson are in my blood...but my name is GUNN...and I grew up in a place where gold was dug. I love this music....I hope my Swedish family will find me one day. xxxxx
I’ve known this song from about ten years, and every time I hear it, it hits the same. Such a great performance!
Love to see the ABBA boys take Kristina to Broadway with Peter, Helen and as many Swedes as possible to sing it in English.
Who watched this at 2022?
Oh Peter, what a splendid performance. You really know how to bring on the tears. What a beautiful voice and outstanding performance. Absolutely awesome! Thank you for sharing your talents and gift of song with the world.
Peter is a true artist, what a beautifully sad song sung so masterfully by this man. His face tells of the horror and loss of his friend.

What a preformence by Peter Joback, brings tears every time I watch this. 5 stars to Peter. As a Swede I feel what the immigrants to the US sometimes went through. Heartbreaking. They came to find gold, but just found misery. No gold, just sand. Sad, but for so many a true story. It was tough times for the scandinavian immigrants, to find a better life, but for so many it did not happen, most of them starved and died. That was the dream to move from poverty and sacrifice everything they had and yet starved to death. To my relatives that came to America, and did not find gold, just "sand". At the time Sweden was going through really bad times, they were brave to take the chance to go to the USA, but sadly most of them tried but unfortunately failed to find fortune. May they rest in peace, but the relatives in Sweden will always find them as survivals, who wanted a better quality of life. But mostly of them did not achieve that sadly. It was hard times both in Europe and the US. "To my relatives that came to the US, but unfortunately didn't succeed" You're still heroes, you tried, but unfortunately failed, but yet heroes".

@Summercloud1991 No, the music is made by ABBA for this musical. It's based on the real story of Swedish migraters in America.
It's made by Björn Ulveaus and Benny Andersson, not the whole group ABBA

Jisses, de kom väl aldrig fram till guldet?.
de hittade bara lite guld. Men de blev lurade när de sålde det och fick inte någonting för sitt guld
"gold" has turned to sand. dust
