  • Brushy Bill Roberts In His Own Words: The Outlaw Years: Part 3 - In this episode, I continue immediately following the killing of Tom Folliard at Ft. Sumner. I will read directly from William Henry Roberts' tape recorded interviews with William V. Morrison. I will discuss Roberts' account of the killing of Charlie Bowdre, the Kid's capture at Stinking Springs and his trial at Mesilla. Additionally, I will compare Roberts statements with those presented in the book, The Saga of Billy the Kid by Walter Noble Burns to show that the new claim by neo-historians, that Roberts obtained his knowledge of Billy the Kid by memorizing the Burns book is completely unfounded and not based on facts.

    My 2nd great grandmother was Odilia Maxwell. She was a younger sister to Paulita Maxwell. Odilia was around 10-11 years old when the supposed killing of Billy the kid was killed at Fort Sumner. Family folklore states it was not Billy the kid. Pat Garret was hiding under a bench in the hallway and shot a man with a double barrel shotgun. Garret was a coward and shot the wrong man.

    Brett, I really enjoy your narratives and research presented. You do an exceptional job. Thank you for your series on Brushy. I feel the same as you, it's amazing how mainstream historians refuse to accept anything that goes against their norm.
    I truly recon the facts themselves prove he is genuine and is Billy. It's awesome to hear Billy's life through his own eyes.
    True history is so skewed by the writers of the day, trying to embellish the real story, or follow a scripted narrative as they were instructed. I look forward to your future endeavors, including volume 4 of Brushys story. Keep up the good work!

    Listening to Robert's account of his capture and trial was not only fascinating but confirmed a couple of thoughts I've had for some time. In regards to Deputy Olinger, in today's Law Enforcement world, his behavior would not have been tolerated for long. From his taunting of prisoners and his threats against them, it is clear he would have been ( most likely ) fired for cause and blacklisted from working in Law Enforcement in any jurisdiction. It is also clear that Pat Garrett was deathly afraid of the Kid, and that if they had been friends once, that was long gone by this point. I believe that Garrett lied about killing Billy the Kid and did what he had to do to cover it up and save himself. Garrett seems to come of as a hired [[ elected ]] killer who enjoyed shooting people [[ without confirming who they were before shooting ]] by acting as a bushwacker.

    Continued from the comment on this account from Frank Clifford (posted in Part 2), Clifford says (following Bowdre's death):
    "After a couple of hours, the Kid managed to untie Rudabaugh's horse and was getting it into the shanty, intending to make a breakout, but the horse was shot and killed by Pat's men, and it fell with its body blocking the door.
    "About noon or a little after, Pat's men were cooking themselves some bacon and coffee, as no one had eaten since dinner the day before. The Kid's gang were holed up so they could not even have a fire, and it was pretty cold, and that bacon and coffee must have smelled good. Pat and the Kid had been talking back and forth most of the time, Pat trying to get the Kid to come out and surrender.
    "In the end, the Kid agreed to surrender if they would guarantee him a fair trial in court, and protection from lynching, which Pat eventually agreed to. On that the Kid and what was left of his gang came out with their hands up. The first thing the Kid said when he saw the posse was, 'Pat, you so-and-so, they told me there was a hundred Texans here from the Canadian River! If I'd a-known there wasn't no more than this, you'd never have got me.'
    "But Pat and the rest just laughed, and they all went back to Fort Sumner, where they split up, our men coming to White Oaks to join us, and the Kid's gang being taken to Lincoln, and from there to Los Cruses [_sic_] or Mesilla, I cannot now recall which. He was tried and sentenced to be hung, and brought back to be confined in the Lincoln County Jail until the date set for his execution. I never heard what became of Rudabaugh and Wilson (if that was his name).
    "Talk about a vicious-looking countenance, Rudabaugh really had one! He was tough all the way through, and he showed it. One look at his eyes gave him away for what he was, mean all the way. I saw him once, when I was working on the Bell Ranch. A man by the name of Wilson was with him, and I think he was the other member of the Kid's gang but I am not sure. Wilson may not have been his name, but it was what he called himself there.
    "Two men rode up to the home ranch that night, at the Bell Ranch, and asked to stay all night. They ate with us, slept in the bunk house with all their clothes on, and never took off their guns that we saw. They probably slept with them on all night. Next morning they ate breakfast and rode on. We could tell the big fellow was a killer. He looked it. His eyes showed it. We were remarking about it, when along came Cape Willingham with the mail, practically on the heels of the two strangers, who had hardly got out of sight. Cape brought the Las Vegas newspaper, carrying the story of what these two had been up to...
    "The day before they arrived at the ranch, this fine pair had ridden to Las Vegas, where Dave Rudabaugh and 'Wilson' had tried to rescue a friend of Rudabaugh's from jail. Dave and 'Wilson' rode up and told the jailer to let the fellow out. The jailer refused, and Rudabaugh killed him instantly, took his keys, and opened the jail. Strange to say, his pal refused to come out, so Dave and 'Wilson' gave up arguing with him, and rode away. There was a lot of feeling in Las Vegas about that, and I guess plenty of people would have liked to see Dave Rudabaugh swing for the killing of the jailer.
    "Many folks felt sorry for Bowdre's death. He was a right decent fellow, and well-liked despite the fact that he had joined up with the Kid's gang."

      The memoir of Clifford was written 1940 by but was never published, remaining in the family for more than fifty years. That means, Clifford's account of Billy the Kid was not known prior to the 1980s at least. Thus, many of what he says confirms Robert's account.

    Hey Brett much thanks for your research and details of the events at that time in history , I'm begining to understand what was going on behind the seen as I have read Wallace's memoirs and he was frustrated by the ring and didn't have the power to save the kid , but since he tried to replace bristol with ira lenard , probably there was a deal made with Mrs mc sween because why was Garrett in white oaks when the kid escaped Lincoln really and then poe was there shortly before that July night in 1881 and later we find out he was in on the cover up , there was deal probably , Wallace was bewildered and frightened by the power of the ring . And yes was agitated by Billy's popularity but not enough to want him dead , Wallace was ex military and probably in some way or another admired the kids moxy especially for a kid with a baby face to have real guts and courage to go against the ring in which even Wallace had problems with they're power

When I used to work at the Museum in Canton as an archivist. I digitized it and me and my good friend, Dr. Jannay Valdez, would often make copies for people and give them away. Some of these have turned up on youtube, which is fine, but I really wish people would credit Bill for finding them on their videos, as he had to go through a lot to obtain the original recordings.

    • @brushybret
      @brushybret  Рік тому +2

      2 copies of the interviews were known to exist. The first set of copies were in the possession of Roberts' step-grandson, Bill Allison. These tapes were loaned to researcher Frederic Bean sometime in the late 80s. W.C. Jameson wrote a book about this set of tapes in the book, Billy the Kid: The Lost Interviews. When Bean had the tapes, he noted the poor condition they were in, primarily due to the manner in which they were stored. Nonetheless, he transcribed them and these transcripts served as the premise for the book that he and Jameson collaborated on, The Return of the Outlaw Billy the Kid. Following Allison's death, the tapes along with Roberts' trunk were taken by a family member. And from there no one knows what became of either the tapes or Roberts' trunk. As far as the 2nd set of tapes goes: I found a letter Morrison wrote just a few months before his death revealing the location of the tapes. Right before the pandemic hit in early 2020 I contacted the institution and was told they had several items donated by Morrison, and they believed they might have them and just had to figure out exactly where they were being stored. The pandemic forced us to temporarily pause in our search efforts, but I'm optimistic that sometime in the near future I'll be able to locate them...if they still exist. If I do locate them, I will put them up here on UA-cam. The audio tapes were available for public viewing in the 1950s - the 1970s. The Westerners Club had them for a while, as did the El Paso Rotary Club, and the Missouri Historical Society. When Morrison died in 1977 is when they went out of circulation. I talked to Leon Metz back in 2005 as he and Morrison were friends and lived only a couple of blocks from one another, and he confirmed that he listened to them while they were on loan to the El Paso Rotary Club. I have letters from Phil Rasch thanking Morrison for allowing the Westerners Club to host them. In part 4 of this series I show correspondence between Robert Mullin and Morrison where they discuss Mullin listening to the tapes and him being impressed by Roberts' statements. Thanks for watching.

However, the powers that be in New Mexico fought this every step of the way by filing a series of frivolous lawsuits and by attacking the two officers directly, to the point that they both eventually resigned their positions with the Lincoln County Sheriffs Department. Didn't brushy bill say he was left handed though bc everyone at the time thought he was. .but then they found out out picture was reversed and he was really right handed. So that would prove that he wasn't billy the kid . I heard he said he was left handed not sure

      No, he said he was ambidextrous. Newspaper reporters that were present at the meeting with Governor Mabry noted that Roberts wrote with his right hand and buttoned his jacket with his right hand as well. There is a lot of bad information being circulated online by those who seek to discredit Roberts. Thanks for watching.

    I only have one problem with brushy being billy. Garrets actions that night clearly were to kill the kid. So why did he knowingly not kill him and let him go? I cant think of any logical or belivable reason to acceot that part of ut all. Other than that its hard to say he wasnt the kid

    You should know that is not a photo of Dave Ruddebaugh. It’s just a random photo of a guy from Minnesota or Wisconsin. The photo was purchased at an antique store. The guy who bought the photos falsely claimed they were of famous people from the Lincoln county war.

    I’m all for a good conspiracy. The only thing I see that could be a total disaster to the comparison of Roberts to Bonney is that all these books were out to the public for Roberts to read and study. If he was a broken man, desperate for money and fame, the man could of study the whole shabam .

      The problem with this theory is that most of the publications that verified Roberts' accounts weren't published until after his death in 1950. The 1950s were what I consider to be the golden era for revelations and details about Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War, with the emergence of researchers and authors like Rasch, Mullin, Keleher, Briehan, etc.etc. The books published before that time were riddled with errors, omissions, and falsehoods that if Roberts repeated would've been extremely damaging to his claim.

    For those who say brushy Bill could of read all this information is simple wrong. Brushy was quite illiterate and could barely read or write. He gave information that even historians didn't know, but proven correct later

    Really interesting but is it necessary to keep saying 'and quote'?

    • @brushybret
      @brushybret  Рік тому +11

      Unfortunately, I have to do that when citing the exact words from published sources, or else I face the possibility of being accused of plagiarizing the works of others. I am well aware that it can seem redundant at times. Thanks for watching.

      There is a right way to do things and a wrong way to do things. Brett is doing it the right legal way using the word "quote". Better to do it legal than illegal and get sued.

    • @samuelmarberry4761
      @samuelmarberry4761 Рік тому +1

      End quote....that way you know when he's done being quoted, otherwise it would be difficult to know what was the direct word's of brushy or the narration.
