  • No matter who you are and what you do in music, you can always improve and work toward a purpose. Tailoring your ear training toward that purpose is something fun to think about, and here are some of my thoughts about it, directed toward my son, Charlie.

You're right! You can't make your kids learn an instrument if they don't want to. That's why I gave up :) Haha! Hey sit up!! Love that :)

I think it's really great that you don't unhealthily compare your kids and students with one another, unlike so many parents and teachers who do it constantly with their own children (and in result, destroy their kid's interest/confidence). You are an awesome teacher :)

This is all too complicated for me. I never thought music, harmony was so detailed and complicated, FASCINATING! Thank you for sharing this experience with me. I have much more appreciation for the complexities behind music and your ability to teach someone to sing and harmonize. You seem to be a great mom and your son Charlie, amazing, cute and very talented. I can’t really understand how he or students do it. So much to learn and so little time left. Thanks again for your sharing your vocation and passion in your life. Best wish for success to you, Charlie and your students. I wish I had someone like you in my neighborhood that could teach me a thing or two. You just don’t know what you don’t know, or what you might be able to do, until such a door opens in you life to give something a try.

This is fascinating! I'm having a lot of trouble seperating the individual notes from a chord, so this amazes me

That was so awesome! As I did my best to go along with it, it really helped to learn alongside Charlie and the way you listened as a teacher. It seemed as if you were speaking "ear" to each other and i've never experienced that side of it! I learned to play by ear okay on my own but now I wish grew up around others who spoke it. Definitely will make my friends do this! haha they may protest but anyone can do it I think. Thank you for your videos and this 5 year late discovery

What an awesome video! I feel much more confident in my ear now, being able to pick out notes just like Charlie, even though I'm 30. :P Just discovered your channel and as an intermediate piano player, it's been enormously helpful to me to see all the advice and techniques from a higher level player. It's really enhanced my understanding and removed a lot of roadblocks I felt being a complete autodidact with the instrument due to finances. Thank you!

Charlie is great. He doesn't look like he's having fun, he looks like he's putting up with the exercise like an obedient child. Adults forget what fun really feels/looks like.

Really great. Thank you so much for sharing this. You're teaching him the most important musicians skill, "listening" Beautiful connection you have, as well. Aloha

On the "B-I-N-G-O" section, the "wrong" notes actually sounded cool to me! Nice crunchy chords!

The part where you play the song and have him pick out the odd notes somehow touches me like the movie Synecdoche, New York did. It's the music you play coming together with the realization of how special and full of love an ordinary moment is. Didn't expect that from an ear training video. I am happily heartbroken. All the best.
