In 1966 I visited Las Vegas for the first time, we stayed at the Galaxy Motel, it was roughly across the street from the Dunes. I had never seen anything like the Dunes sign. I sat looking out the room window at it for 45 minutes. I couldn’t stop, it was so amazing. Finally my mother made me go to bed. But then about 2 AM I got up and started watching the sign again.
@Mike Great story, love it! I know what you mean. My parents took me there in '69 when I was 9 years of age. We stayed at the Algiers Hotel, which was across the street from the only 1 year old Circus Circus. I wasn't your typical 9 year old. When we went inside Circus Circus, I didn't care about the upstairs carnival games. I wanted to be on the casino floor playing the slots with my parents. But, I had to stand behind the velvet rope and just watch... It was so frustrating! But it was still such a thrill to be there for the first time. 😊

Back in 1980s the population of Las vegas was only between 200,000 - 300,000. Today it is 2.3 million. Its Americas fastest growing city
The Dunes was long gone by the time I was born and so were the other casinos by the time I visited Vegas for the first time last year. If I saw a sign like the Dunes I would have taken way too many photos of it, because it looks so darn cool.
They really should make signs like this again, what fun is a sign being a plastic box when really they could be decked out in all sorts of cool colors.
This is classic Las Vegas. The late 60's thru the early 80's. Nothing like it ever again. I'm glad I was able to experience the two & quarter decade.
Back when Las Vegas didn't charge you $40 resort fee for a $29 hotel room.

@@F_K_S I read the other day that some places in town are charging a "drink fee"...Not sure what that means, but it doesn't sound good. 🤔
Rooms would typically sell for around $40 a night back in the 80s. Adjusted for inflation, that would be around $130. With the increase in room inventory over the 90s and into the 00s, room rates are actually more competitive than they were in the 1980s and on most nights of the year are even cheaper compared to the 1980s when factoring in inflation.
The resort fees are not an issue that has increased final price for guests. It’s just a different way of generating revenue that prevents sites like Travelocity and Priceline from skimming a higher commission off of third party sales.

I remember as a 13 year old boy, going for a drive down the Las Vegas Strip at night in 1987 and was just absolutely blown away. We stayed in a crappy motel that year but it didn't matter to me at that age. The following year we stayed at the Imperial Palace which was much nicer. In 95 I stayed at Bally's and all the big changes were taking place and it was the best experience yet. Dining was cheap, drinks were cheap or free, rooms were great value. I went back in 2000 but something had changed and it wasn't as good. I'd love to go back now but I don't think it will be the same.
I'm 18 and I wish I had a time machine to go back to this Vegas I have been living here all my life and I started to do research on its past wow now that's a lot of lights
Yes sir. I used to go to vegas with my grandparents every year starting in about 94. It was amazing. I still remember it like it was yesterday and the first time I went I was 7 years old. Wed leave from Texas, drive through new Mexico and Arizona, cut up to Nevada and before hitting California (where my great grandma by grandpas mom lived) wed either stop by loflin (or however you spell it) or Las Vegas and then wed hit the other on the way back and go the same way home. It was awesome. I spent all my time in the arcades and swimming pools lol. I remember I'd run out of money (my grandpa was tight with his money btw) and go look for my grandpa to see if hed tske me back to the motel and hed give me 20 dollar Bill's everytime and I'd go play more video games lol. I loved vacations with my grandparents because all the stress of life seemed to leave them and they almost seemed young to me. Like they just let go and had a lot of fun. Memories I'll cherish for the rest of my life and probably things I'll tell my grandkids one or these days.

Joshua Traffanstedt I live in Texas, back in 1993 I flew from Austin to Las Vegas.. I was 11. I went for competition in BMX racing.. I remember my parents and I were on this strip. Never seen so many lights. We stayed at the circus circus hotel.... it was pretty cool.. they had a floor for the casinos. A circus arena. And a floor full of arcade games that were free to play (which as a kid was a treat)..... back then was an amazing time to go and wish I was an adult during that period....
@@slothitwonder1015 I agree. I remember my grandpa had gave me $20 that day to play arcades on for several hours while they gambled. I put the 20 in what I thought was a quarter change machine, but it turned out to be a nickel one. It started shooting all these nickels out lol. So I got 2 or 3 of those cups the casino gives to put your coins in and walked through the casino until I figured out where the gift shop was. A guard stopped me and thought I'd been playing a nickel machine lmao. But after I told him, he accompanied me to the gift shop lol. I had to trade the nickels in for another 20 dollar bill and then go back to get quarters haha. I dont know why, but I'll most likely never forget that.
I'll also never forget how awesome my grandparents were on vacation. My grandpa was usually really cheap (probably so he could save for that expensive vacation lol. I understand now why he was cheap though in reality. Its rough paying Bill's otherwise), but on vacation he gave me all kinds of money. Probably a hundred bucks or so each time we went on vacation. For a kid between 7 and 11 in the 90s, that's a lot of money.

@@SODMGGOKU 80s era was so chill , its un populated. Like theres no traffic and not like 50000 people walking in one street gutter. There isnt crime everywhere , its just the music and the funky culture. But the thing that is awesome about the 80s is , EVERYONE ISNT ON THIER PHONE. Its just freindly communication and no gadgets , you can just befriend someone walking down the streets. No decade can beat the 80s
Bass & Trap cities were busy at times like the summer tho but freetime just was respected like it should be these days people always have to find a way to do things bigger for anything bc their phones has taken away curiousity bc on your phone you can see anything

Best time, cheap buffet, free parking and no mask required.
Since this film was shot, nearly every hotel featured has been demolished to make way for newer mega resorts:
- The Dunes was demolished in 1993 to make way for the Bellagio
- The Stardust was brought down in January 2007 to make way for what was supposed to be the multi-use complex Echelon Place, but instead was developed into Resorts World Las Vegas
Both had really cool looking neon signs
The frontier was demolished to get replaced by nothing
The Aladdin was replaced by planet Hollywood
I remember seeing Las Vegas like this 1st time in August 1988 when I was 11 years old. Stayed in Ballys, Dunes in 1991, Flamingo 1996, Caesars Palace 2012 and MGM 2019.

I've lived in las vegas all my life but I have never seen most of these buildings; the only ones that stand out to me are bally's, caesar's palace, and of course mcdonalds. It's amazing to see what it used to be like from this era.
Alot of those buildings got taken down, alot of Italian mobs owned these buildings 😂 u should watch casino if u havent already itll explain most of it

It is a completely different world now then I remember it in the 80's. It was a grittier place back then, but that is what gave it it's charm.
Between 1986 and 1990.
3rd brake lights on cars weren't mandatory until 1986, and several cars have them in this video.
The Stardust sign was revamped with different font letters in 1990.
This was literally the last of old Vegas.

I think someone pinpointed November/December 1987 from the shows on the Aladdin sign marquee and Amiga billboard. I knew it was pre 1988 since the large Flamingo sign is still there.
@@arrived255The US DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION made the 3RD brake light mandatory due to a series of fender benders beginning around 1979. The brakes lights of course were quite low on cars & not many HIGH Side brake lights existed then &...no SUV's were on the roads.

My first trip to LV was 1975, I was 15, from 1980 - 2000 I was here about 3-4x a year to play, the videos bring back some just amazing memories

I first came to Vegas in 1986 and this is how I remember it. So much better than today's Vegas.
Now thats the Vegas I enjoyed. Not this money hungry Disneyland it is today !! I loved the Dunes and the Stardust happy I was able to experience it in the 80's.

Juan M. Ruiz It was shot on 16mm film 🎞 . Film has a better ageless lossless quality and is preservative compared to other medias esp of that time.
Yes, videotape at the time was really primitive -- it was well before digital video, and the resolution and dynamic range were poor. The footage seen here looked really good; if I were to process it, it would probably be to lower the black levels a bit, as even the night sky looks more dark gray than true black, but the slightly washed-out shadows contribute to the sense that even the night itself was overwhelmed by the lights.
Incidentally, although the footage here isn't dated, it appears to be from late October or early November in 1987. I base this on two factors: the sign at the Aladdin announcing an appearance by Fleetwood Mac on December 4th (that was the year they performed there on that date) and the Commodore "Only Amiga Makes It Possible" billboard; that was the year they were using that ad slogan, and the billboard mentions an exhibition hall and booth, leading me to suspect it was an ad for their appearance at Comdex, which was held the first week of November that year.
I was stationed at Nellis AFB in fall of 1981. I was 19 years old. We used to ride our motorcycles downtown. We thought we were bad asses. Oh those days were awesome. I used to stop a Naugles and get a big burrito on my way back to base. I saw a LOT of concerts at the Aladdin. We used to hang out at Meadow Mall, go to Lake Mead, ride up to Mt. Charleston, hang out a Craig Road Speedway. Great times.
This video brings back so many happy memories of my childhood and early adulthood. I wish this Strip was still there!

This excellent video was lensed in late November, 1987...
The date of the Fleetwood Mac concert listed on the Aladdin Theater sign read: "Friday, December 4th"-- In 1987, December 4 was on a Friday... FB Las Vegas experts Rob Donohoo and Karl Lawson noted the Stardust signage style was changed in the mid 1980's, and Karl also noted the Amiga computer was advertised on a billboard--a computer which was released in 1985...
But there's an advertisement for Commodore Amiga on a sign at 1:20 and I think they came out in 1985
Noticed a "Seasons Greetings" sign on the Flamingo too, so it's definitely around that time of year.
Amiga 1000 was announced and release in July 1985 but not widely available till early 1986, the follow-on consumer (500) and High End expandable (2000) versions were revealed at Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Jan 1987. The weird part is that Fleetwood Mac concert is listed in a few places as Dec 4th 1987. So the Amiga billboard is very misleading. I can't verify with the Moe Bandy and Dottie West playing the Stardust casino, no info I could find. It does imply that it is for National Finals Rodeo, held in the first week of Dec in Vegas every year. The Stardust sign Font was changed in 1991, according to wiki during a remodeling & expansion started in 1990. The Oba Oba show helps verify the time , but only somewhat, as it had 2 runs on the strip. Also Churchill

I was there in the summer of 1981 I stayed at the Dunes had a great time.
In addition to all the cool old school neon casinos, it was neat to see a Commodore Amiga billboard.

Funny seeing the mcdonalds. I ate there with my grandparents for the first time in 1994. We ate there about 3 more times the following years. My grandpa was cheap i thought until i went to vegas with him. Then i realized he was cheap so he could save up to go to vegas. Then hed just have a blast. He was like a different man haha. Fleetwood Mac played at the Aladdin Theatre on December 4, 1987. That sign advertised it, so this was shot sometime in late 1987. Cool and very high quality footage for its time!
@Charlie Davidson Thanks for the date designation. I'm surprised to see Tina Turner in such small letters. Her career had just taken off again. I'm surprised her name wasn't in big letters at the top of the sign. She was riding high at the time, not long after her smash hit: "What's Size Got To Do With It"? 🤣

All the sporting events coming to present-day Vegas will never replace the earlier, magnificent era of Sin City, live entertainment.
That's just after I moved here. Bally's was still the original MGM when i got here in 86.
@Metal Bill That's right, I remember that. Just east of that MGM parking lot, was a small strip mall that included the Churchill Downs Race Book. That's where I used to go to bet the horses in the early to mid 80s...I really miss it. 😊

This is from 1987 and I was 16 and had made many trips to Vegas, including this year. It is the Vegas that I remember. Lots of neon. I don't recognize it now.

I was married at the Dunes on August 17th, 1986. It lasted 24 years but seemed so much longer!
My dad and I never really had a good relationship , I remember family trips through Vegas and driving the strip at night. Some of the better times I wish we can do again.
To the video owner: I have the exact year of most if not all of this video. The Tina Turner concert advertised on the Aladdin sign took place on Dec 10 1987. So almost certainly this video was taken within a few months before then, in 1987.

It was interesting to see even McD's got in on the neon and flashy lights... and cool to see a billboard advertising the Commodore Amiga! (and which would place that clip in late 1980s / very early 1990s)

A thing of beauty
We started going to Vegas about this time. Stayed mostly downtown at the beginning. California hotel, Golden Nugget, Freemont (My father in law won a Trans Am there) But the Vegas Club was our regular with the dugout restaurant which had tons of baseball memorabilia out front.
There was a really nice huge bus to take you to the strip in those days. Had to catch it in the back of the (Union) Plaza hotel and it took us to the Frontier Hotel. Perfect spot. We actually walked one time from Downtown all the way to the Hacienda and back hitting all the casinos. Long walk. Sketchy in some areas but what the heck.
Stayed at the Stardust few times. The highrise not the three story ones in the back. Spooky...lol
I do remember the amount of vacant lots in the early days. and that the first time I went into the sands bathroom there was an attendant that would give shoe shines and there was all kinds of after shave and colognes if you wanted. Don't see that any more. The beer was in a small glass so they kept coming around alot which meant more tips however if you wanted to drink more, slots of fun had 50 cent Heineken that suited my taste back then. Until I'd say, the 2000's the waitresses were absolutely beautiful. Everywhere you went. It was a good job and they raked in the tips. Also had the change people that would give you info on hot machines and suddenly appear when you won, looking for a tip. They were nice and it was a fun time.
We still go (pre Covid) and expect to go in the future. I like the new Vegas too. But it was different in the old days. Great video. Brings back all the memories.

Man, I've walked so many times with my brothers or cousins at 12 13 and 14 all of them younger from Circus Circus with a $20 bill each to last all day and get McDonalds on the way back right there and walk back to the Frontier. Picking up nudy cards on the ground and I remember one year the strike in front of the Frontier and they were calling and yelling at us for going in called my oldman a SCAB. I snapped and said "at least my scab dad has a job" Pops of mine was not into that, shit talking or father son stuff but he appreciated that one. I'll never forget all these times.

When I moved from LA to LV in Jan 86 Bally's was still original MGM Grand. Bought later that year by Bally's... Note, the MGM Lion carpeting stayed for over a year though. Then sold by the... Lion sq ft at dirt cheap

I worked at that McDonalds in spring of 86 the 3rd busiest Mcds in the world behind Beijing and London
First went to Vegas in the late 70s and stayed at the original MGM grand , the one that burned down. You could get deals on everything including rooms, food, drinks. You could still find single deck black jack and I had studied Thorp’s original book on card counting so winning was possible. I’ve gone back pretty much every year since but in my opinion, it has changed so much to where it is no longer that attractive to me. I liked the seedier type Vegas, especially downtown prior to the Fremont Street Experience. Corporate Vegas has taken the fun out of it. I stay off Strip now.

Hotel entrances and porte cochere's right ON the strip instead of having to drive through a maze around the back of the property to find the parking and hotel entrance. What a novel concept this is compared to today's Vegas.
I saw them implode the Dunes - their were guys with very expensive-looking cameras around. Later I realized it was the footage used at the end of Casino with Deniro et all
The Comedy Store at the Dunes. Kinison ran that place basically during this time. I would give up a lot to go back just one night to see him.

What was this filmed on? It looks crisp and buttery no jerkyness at all this has to be some of the best footage out there I wish new properties would use more neon even if it wasn't animated like it is on the dunes Aladdin and flamingo

The Aladdin had a beautiful design with the arches but it had to go because it was poorly constructed inside. I wish someone would build it over again only stronger.
