That was even TWO good basses. I’m a fan of both bands. I think this song was a sort of Proof of Concept for them. They blended the sound of both bands really nicely - most of the fans of both bands love it, those few who say meh are BM fans that say it’s too much of a Warning song and vice versa: so, mission accomplished, I’d say. I would even wager that given how fast they needed to work, the song is an absolute banger. I have listened to it about a dozen times and it keeps getting better. From both the accounts of people who attended the live debut, and from the social media accounts of all band members and entourage, this was a first high moment of a beautiful friendship. Both bands have notoriously gruelling schedules for their gigs, but I think that if they can make room for more time together, they will jump on the opportunity, and we will see more of them.
It seems like a pretty solid split of people who say it sounds more like each band. I’m a bigger Band-Maid fan than of The Warning, and I thought it felt like a Warning song with Band-Maid embellishments, like Kanami shredding barely audibly in the second verse and then prominently in the outro. But it didn’t have the structural complexity of a normal Band-Maid song. I thought they did a great job meeting in the middle and composing something they could play live and not have it sound like a mess.
So TW and B-M met at a US festival in 2022 and said they should collaborate. They got that opportunity this year. They went to Japan and played three shows, one with Band-Maid. TW traveled to Japan two weeks early to write/compose/record with B-M and record a MV. They then played it together at their one concert together. In an interview on the PRS channel, Kanami and Dany said that more collaborations are in the future. Kanami wants B-M to come to Mexico and and Dany wants the collab to be in Spanish. Dany and Kanami play similar PRS guitars in the same color.
Spanish and Japanese have similar vowels. This might actually be easier than English for Band-Maid. Probably going to laugh my ass off if Saiki starts aggressively rolling Rs like Miku in Why Why Why.
I think the reason the vocals seemed so loud on the choruses is because both Saiki and Dany were singing the high part together, and it was one of the others (possibly Miku or Pau) singing the lower part. Saiki and Dany have such similar tones that their voices just blend together so that it is difficult to pick one out from the other.
Was lucky enough to be at their joint concert in Tokyo where they live debuted this song Also caught the premiere of this video too. Nice to get to read the lyrics on this one Really hoping that they release an official live video of this from that concert too!
Japanese-Spanish would be very cool. Apparently the two bands are planning to continue the collaboration with The Warning hosting Band-Maid in Mexico. Should be fun.
So the vocal mix is very forward but the "I wish they flipped the vocals thing did happen. Saiki took the first verse with Dany chiming in her and there, and Danny took the second verse with Saiki chiming in at the end. Then they both sing the last chorus
W I N !!!!! 🎀 W I N !!!⚡I think we can just say, at their level, Band-Maid and The Warning are equal peers at the very top of the "Rock" pile. I’ve watched “Show Them” 50 times now and still haven’t been able to drop my eyes down to the lyrics.🤘😂 Thx, Shira! Btw -- I was just thinking: Band-Maid and The Warning, two very different bands, found something that would bring them together -- music! If only the people of the world could find something that would bring them together. I know... if peace and prosperity isn't enough, how about uniting for the very survival of our species! 🤔
"GIRL POWER!" I love this collab! It's usually hard as hell to do a collab between two bands with divergent styles well. These two bands, and the production crew, NAILED IT! They have hinted that The Warning has invited Band-Maid to perform in Mexico and that another collab between them is a possible, this time in Spanish. I feel Band-Maid and The Warning are the new "Power Couple" in rock.
The Warning. ⚠️ ⚡️ But, since this collab and more exploring, Band Maid is growing somewhat on me. I like the slap bass and the lead guitarist’s style.
Fantastic collaboration song. Both bands did an excellent job. And as a collab, it really didn't sound like a Band-Maid or a The Warning song but a great, "If Band-Maid and The Warning had a baby" song.😂 As for the vocals, @_tyler5201 covered what I was going to say. Keep rocking with both The Warning and Band-Maid! PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
There was a live performance of this in Tokyo, which was pretty cool. Unfortunately, fan cam videos posted of the performance were taken down within a day or 2, and resulted in a copyright strike for a number of early reactors. I think that debut performance was professionally recorded, so hopefully Band Maid will release the live performance video at some later date. 😎👍
My friend: DarWin and The Warning... 2 of the Best Bands in the World!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the live show in Tokyo, the bands seemed to be more on an equal footing. For example, both Akane and Pau were playing drums throughout the song except for the parts where they do their solo sections. That observable fact, that they can play in synchronization speaks to the skill level each possess. There is a good reason that bands don't usually have two drummers. It's difficult to pull off, especially live, without making the song sound muddy in the percussion. I think both bands played into their strengths while respecting that it was a BM song and going to appear on their next album. TW are known from not upstaging one another and only playing a solo when the song calls for it. I feel that translated here as allow BM to shine a little more here and there, for example, Akane shredding at the end (which Dany is more than capable of doing though I think Akane may be a bit faster) and Misa slapping the bass. As for Saiki and Dany's vocals. Kanami wrote the song in a key that is toward the top of each register. Dany can hit the high notes with some power, which is demonstrated at the intro. When they performed it live Saiki seemed to be straining at times. But for the most part their voices blended so well that except for Saiki's accent on some words attimes, it's hard to tell which one is singing loudest. They both have some power in the middle of their range. IDK if Ale has ever slapped the bass only that she hasn't in a TW song. She certainly has studied a wide range of techniques, though. So if wouldn't surprise me if she could do it. It's more of a trick than a technique. And it hurts when you do it until your fingers get used to it, which is a good enough reason for not doing it at all. And, once you do it, it's kind of expected that you do it a lot.
Yes, there is video of Ale during lessons when she was younger playing a very similar style as to what Misa was doing. Her 30+ second intro to Dust to Dust at Lunario is another example of very similar technique. I’m sure both bassist are capable of many different playing styles, playing with or without a pick, etc. It’s more of a stylistic approach in how each band composes and performs music.
I heard a similar comments on the vocal mix from others. I get this is a song destined for a Band Maid album, so it is going to have an overall Band Maid sound. It is a fun song. I am primarily a TW fan, but I do enjoy some of Band Maid's tuff too.
Yes, you can tell in the production and performance values that there is an ever so slightly higher emphasis on Band Maids performance, from the vocal mix and to the solo trade-off sections.
@@conrad98gtpI think a lot of people got the wrong idea, and viewed the bit where they’re bouncing solos off each other as a competition. I think the idea was to get a little taste of styles, rather than the upper limits of their capabilities. e.g. Akane is a very busy drummer, and Pau is a very powerful drummer, and that seemed captured nicely.
I don't know about that. Been The Warning fan 10+ years and Band-Maid for almost 5. For me this song sounds like mix of both band strong points and also not making it too complicated while also adding things to make it difficult for both bands. Like vocal mix and key. Its too high compared what both singers usually sing. And its meant as challenge to both singers. Kanami herself said in interview that she wanted to challenge both singers with it.
I want to start this with emphasizing what I am about to write isn't a criticism of either band or the song itself... just things I think may be happening behind the scenes. Like you, I think I detect subtleties in how this was produced where _The Warning_ is taking more of a support role to _Band Maid_ in the composition. I'm not going to pretend to understand Japanese culture. I spent four years stationed in Tokyo and I while I think a Westerner can learn and navigate some of intricacies of Japanese society, I don't think many outsiders can truly understand their culture. That said, I think _The Warning's_ collaboration was done with some very deliberate choices to defer to _Band Maid_ to make it palatable to Japanese fans. Again, I'm not criticizing. I think it was done with sincerity by both bands to show mutual respect. I'm a simple man that can barely navigate the culture I was born and raised in so maybe someone else can chime and confirm, or deny, my observation that some very intelligent and strategic cultural wrangling happened here.
It’s easy to think that The Warning is being deferential if you’re only going by the video, and if you haven’t seen the live version floating around or read the interviews. (Note: I don’t think you’re being critical and I’m hoping I can clarify a few things.) Imagine 2 bands from different parts of the world that don’t share a common tongue getting together with a very short amount of time during their tours to create a song in which everyone plays on. Band-Maid had to dial down their J-rock elements to make this work much to the dismay of some Band-Maid fans. And The Warning made some compromises on their part as well to the dismay of some of their fans. For me that means I get a non-typical BM or TW song (as if either band produces a typical song.) So, is The Warning deferring to BM? With that opening war cry?!? It was Dani’s idea and Band-Maid loved it. That closing bass line? It was B-M’s homage to the ending of The Warning’s Survive. That instrumental bridge? Ale started it and Pau ended it. All this on someone else’s album. There were complaints about not hearing Dani’s voice. The thing is, both singers were singing at the top of their range, a higher register than normal, and more constantly than they were comfortable with. At that range, both voices sounded really similar and blended beautifully. We got to hear Dani and Saiki push themselves like never before. And sounding like they normally don’t. If anything, UA-cam compression isn’t helping, especially for those listening to the video at less than 1080p. Also the vocals tend to be loud on a BM song because the lead guitarist would rather hear the vocals than her guitar. Admittedly not the most ideal. B-M wrote the initial lyrics and sent it to TW who revised it instead of taking them as is. One thing the video misrepresented is when they show Pau or Akane not playing while the other drummer is during the main verses. Live, both drummers played nearly constantly except during the solos. As much as I enjoy this song, I admit it’s not making my top 20 list for either band. That said, this is one hell of an achievement got both bands. And I look forward to their next collab and hopefully it’s all in Spanish and Japanese. Hopefully Show Them gets The Warning greater exposure in the 2nd largest music industry in the world (Japan) and BM gets radio airplay in the West. All that said you may be absolutely right regarding some subtleties. As an American white man, I myself know little about Japanese or Mexican culture. I can’t speak to the producers or management but there is do much love between these two bands . It’s evident in the video of their first meeting at a US festival and on their socials when both bands shopped anime and ate ramen in Japan. One last note: Mexico broke BM in the West over a decade ago and Band-Maid fans are indebted to Mexico for a few different reasons.
