Only a small clearance in Greenland and Denmark ... a little over a thousand years ago,The Norwegian Eirik Raude or you would say Eric the Red... (Born in Norway here where I live). Sailed from Iceland to Greenland and a colony was founded there... Iceland was at that time part of Norway and Greenland was then considered Norwegian territory... His son Leif Eirikson Sailed a few years later to America and built a farm in Newfoundland... (archaeological excavations have been found and several objects from the Viking Age).... About two hundred years later, Denmark and Norway get into a union with Sweden.... Sweden left the union and Norway remained with Denmark for four hundred years.... When Norway when the union ended, Greenland and the Faroe Islands remained in Danish hands... So Greenland has been part of Denmark for 800 years.

Denmark is now investing in its defence of Greenland with ships and drones. It's also opening up for more Greenlanders to join the military. Because of the threats from the US president. The US, China, Russia it's all the same

Why involving china and Russia? They definitely don't care about that inhospitable almost useless island lol and they're not even close to it and it doesn't provide any benefits to them, Russia already owns half of the Arctic

In politics, everything is theater (representation, and image).
If during his first term, Trump was lost, now he knows what he is doing. Obviously, he has a team that handles the legal aspects of these matters; he doesn't derive them from his own knowledge. With a few orders, he has repositioned U.S. policy, affecting that of many countries.

Everything that Trump says about Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal revolves around the NorthWest Passage which will be a very important shipping lane in the future if the Arctic ice continues to melt.

I am sorry but Greenland belongs to Denmark since 1721. LONG before America even was a thing. The map is not a menu where a country can go and shop worlds. If Denmark told America they want Hawaii, how would that sound to you? It is utterly ridiculous that you even bring this up as it would be normal. Denmark IS a ally to America and there is a military base up there so no America do not need, nor do they have a right to just take it. That would be the EXACT same thing that Putin is doing to Ukraine. Utterly bullshit.
And the fact that America want it when the ice have melted from the climatechages is even dumber consider that America is one of the highest contributor towards the climate changes and the reason Greenland is melting is a large part Americas fault. Jesus, wake up, this is not even funny, you can not be this gullable.

It won't be the case though.
As time goes by, the technology increase and we are able to make a better use of it.
Meaning building more efficiently, crafting more sturdy and durable stuff, reusing things more.
(If the failing capitalist system wasn't purposely engineering crap to maintain itself that is)
What I mean by that, is that as time passes, we will need less and less to import huge amount of stuff by ships. Transport wood and coal and iron from accross the oceans all the time. That's a thing from the XXth century! It won't be needed in the XXIIth century at all. And less and less in ours.

It's not about shipping lanes. It's about prospecting for mineral resources in Greenland and trying to get dominance to do the same in Canada. Nato protects those waters because, as the name suggests, they are bordering the North Atlantic.

  • @jantimmerby

Greenland is not a Danish colony. If they were, they would not be represented in the Danish parliament as they are. Greenland is under the Danish crown, but has self-government. Denmark only has influence on Greenland's foreign policy and defense. The Greenlandic parliamentarians in the Danish parliament have been and still have the opportunity to be the deciding factor in votes in the Danish parliament and can therefore have quite a lot of influence on Danish foreign and domestic policy. Furthermore, Greenland has the right to secede from the Danish crown, that is their right and their choice and no one else's. So please stop referring to Greenland as a Danish colony.

Executive orders are sadly legally binding. They are basically orders from the government (executive orders), in contrast to orders from the congress (which are from the legislative branch).

Some of this is quite interesting watching as a leftwing British person. In the UK you have never been automatically entitled to citizenship if you are born here unless one parent is British or has settled status. And our national parks were mapped out to allow areas of resource extraction - eg Buxton which was omitted from the Peak District national park to allow quarrying. And our former government tried to deport refugees to Rwanda…. We also kickstarted the Industrial Revolution which kickstarted climate chaos. And our empire engulfed the world. So I guess most things Trump are really just old britishisms……
