I've been recommended Moon exactly once, his 1984 video, to be precise. I watched it part-way through, hit the absolute gem of "Sending people to a gulag for a thought crime is exactly the same as cancelling them on social media", and decided not to engage further. Nice to know I managed to get off before the train wreck, so to speak.
Moon is like the biggest US propagandist he fills all the criterias 1. Supports all USA intervention with some fake justification to avoid that it is just Imperialism 2. Accuses China of being the greater evil, and makes fake charges against them 3. Supports Full Free market capitalism 4. Says any regulations aimed at a safer and better society is Totalitarianism 5. Links Fascism to Communism and says that they are the same things because they have regulations
"Nice to know I managed to get off before the train wreck" Nah, more like you told the teller "Nevermind, thank you", left the station and decided to take a Greyhound instead....
Post-Facts Chuds are raging at e-Lawn's AI (the one he cobbled together after pleading for a halt to AI development so he could make one and not have to compete) because it cites facts and not their feelings.
I have no clue. What I will say is that it's rather funny seeing the "anti-woke" crowd try to come up with terms that mean absolutely nothing just to look sophisticated.
Moon talked about how people wanted more original movies and pointed out Barbie's success, but then preceeded to talk about how people don't want Woke movies and how they're bombing? Does he even read his scripts before hand?
You need to remember that moon is what idiots think what a smart person is. Thoughts and words don't make you smart, it is how you use THEM. moon isn't smart, they are just the number 3456 generic anti-everything i don't understand channel
So many youtubers blanketly complain about "woke" movies with no understanding that it is pandering by people who don't know/care what they're talking about. Nepo babies have all the control
People want more original movies... and his example of people capitalising on that is The Daily Wire making their own version of Snow White that he then shows being praised for being more true to either the Grimm's brothers story or the first Disney movie... which would make it less original. tbh it's pretty funny that someone who obviously wanted to promote the Daily Wire's movie making efforts chose "Because Hollywood is so unoriginal!" as a jumping-off point. I'm not saying there's anything good about their movies, but it's not really playing to their strengths. Even the DW's "original" movies are just attempts to make "their version" of Hollywood movies with a few bits changed and a tenth of the budget being made to look like wayyy less than a tenth of their budget.
It's not about logical consistency. It's about crafting an emotional appeal to lead his viewers to the conclusions and/or behaviors he wants to see for his own ideological reasons.
He only praised the Barbie movie because it's a box office success. The anti-woke faction has been so thoroughly programmed by the "woke=broke" slogan that when an actual woke brand becomes successful they either claim it (like Barbie) or just flat out pretend it doesn't exist like the spiderverse movies which literally depict racemixing. In the end these miserable fellows flip right from "popular media is stupid liberal slop" right into "popular media is based actually" This is the dialectical process at work.

"150 years ago, Nietzsche predicted AI would destroy humanity." Well that's the most insane claim I've heard in a while and it's up against some stiff competition.
I've never read any Nietzsche (this is a deliberate boycott), though I did once stumble upon a quote from one his works, where he basically wrote that people who act out of Kantian framework (i.e. people who only ever do good things because they genuinely believe it's the right thing to do) are "automatons" and "the antithesis of humanity". That's the closest thing I can think of him warning about AI, a rant about sheeple
@@avelynn5976 Nietzsche said this about people who don't define their own morality. Here's an excerpt from The Antichrist: "A virtue must be our invention; it must spring out of our personal need and defence. In every other case it is a source of danger. That which not belong to our life menaces it. What destroys a man more quickly than to work, think and feel without inner necessity, without any deep personal desire, without pleasure - as a mere automaton of duty?" So in a way, he would've actually regarded "people who act out just to satisfy their own self righteousness" to be morally superior; it's arguably the textbook definition of an übermensch

One of the funny things about him repeating the argument that breaking bad exemplifies neoliberalism is that he probably doesn't even know what that means and probably think it just means leftist liberals

As a Chemistry student with ADHD it really grinds my gears when someone says “adhd medication is basically just meth” and use the closeness in their structures as evidence. Just because the structure of the molecule has some similarities, does NOT mean they are chemically/functionally the same. Even just 1 different atom within that structure will totally change the compound, so to say they are “practically the same” is misinformed.
I am a biochemist. I can very safely say when most UA-cam critics try to use either bio or chem as a gotcha, they have no clue what they're talking about.
it's actually unfathombale the amount of times i've had to press "not interested" on movie essay/commentary videos because you can immediately tell it's just gonna be the same regurgitated ideas and "hot takes". It's always surface level "modern bad, everything woke now" with no actually effort to further proves their arguments from accounts like moon. It's just lazy.
This is a problem with these people. They don’t care about helping the entertainment industry. They want to remove any progressive themes and remove minorities being represented in media.
Kinda depressing, but this video made me realize that James Somerton's career imploding after being outed as a plagiarist is probably going to be the exception to the rule. By building his brand around queer media analysis, Somerton cultivated an audience of queer people passionate about the representation and history of their community. It's therefore not surprising that a majority of his fans would be horrified to learn his work was heavily plagiarised from other queer creators-not to mention full of casual misogyny, lesphobia, biphobia, acephobia, transphobia, and blatant misinformation. Meanwhile, Moon's content is going to repel anyone who isn't primed to accept "anti-woke" ragebait, conspiratorial bullshit, and outright lies. It essentially self-selects for people who don't give a shit about ethics. Why would the plagiarism be any different?
I was thinking this, too. somerton frankly made a huge mistake in cultivating a left-wing audience, because left-wing people actually care about things like ethics and honesty. yes, they will also often use that passion to tear down people who do not deserve it, but it IS genuine care on their part that leads to that destructive behavior. the most successful scammers will always be right-wing on average, because right-wing ideologies are inherently more self centered and antisocial, and lead to a much more healthy environment for con men.
It's also why Iiluminaughtii's downfall happened. She cultivated an audience who cared about corporate exploitation and the mistreatment of those who are less powerful. So, when it turned out that she was doing those exact same things to the people in her life, of course her audience would turn against her.
The channer loser portion of Internet Historian’s fanbase is already proving you right. In the wake of Hbomb’s video they were pretty vocal about not caring about the plagiarism as long as he keeps dog whistling to them.
Leftists make a habit out of this, so I'm not really shocked, but the absolutely unrepentant self fellating here is borderline comical; "The people who align with me politically are SMART and CARE ABOUT ETHICS, and the people who disagree with me are STUPID and DON'T CARE ABOUT ETHICS!!!!"
Dog whistling to cultivate an audience is an old trick. But not everything on the Internet is hard towards either end of the spectrum. Things aren't automatically reactionary bullshit just because they aren't hard-in-the-paint with progressive issues. There's a big swath of grey in the middle. Probably the majority of things. As a pan gender fluid dude, I don't think you have to be LGBT focused to be against plagiarism. I think it's just the reactionary grifters who will get away with it. And I think their bite is bad, but their bark is still louder than their bite. They're not the majority, despite trying really hard to look like it.
I hope we get another Wonka movie where we see the character go from this naive boy to the Wonka we know from previous movies. Having him get increasingly paranoid could make for a fun film.

hbomb's video touched on how the psychology of plagiarism can be a pretty far cry from the jealous, almost flattering imitation it's usually explained as-- rather, it's just that the plagiarists do not respect the people they're stealing from _at all,_ and in fact they feel like they're above them on some level, like it's their god-given right to steal random dirty nobodies' hard work and plaster their own, ontologically more deserving face on it. a right wing conspiracy theorist semi-plagiarizing the Cars Is Eugenics guy but steering into the usual agenda halfway through is a pretty good example of that logic
@@googleuser1422 plagiarists don't steal from people they like or admire, they steal from people they vehemently despise and then stick their tongue out going 'LEL GET TROLLED'. Talking points from 15 years ago. It really was pretty garbage, but when the general populace has such ingrained misogyny - anything that moves the needle even the tiniest fraction in the right direction is good, even if it isn't groundbreaking or phenomenal story telling. Also, the directors of a product is meaningless for stuff like this. Like I said, it has nice production value but honestly it was pretty low grade schlock intellectually that really didn't have anything to say, so I think the directors still failed to provide any real value there. But if you want a movie about women that had good production value that isn't AWFUL in terms of representation for women, then you could go a lot worse.

I really hope people don't just watch this video for the Moon content, because your examination of the Wonka story and movies at the start was first class. It also raises the interesting question of whether or not movies should rehabilitate problematic stories like the original Dahl novel, or present them in their raw form. I think it depends on whether or not they're representing the problematic aspects in a positive light. This would be an interesting topic for a follow up video.
If an individual UA-camr(even with a team behind them) is making this many video “essays” in a short period of time, there’s a good chance their videos are plagiarizing and/or spreading misinformation. There’s a reason high quality video essayists like the right opinion, Sarah z, Shaun, Big Joel, Contrapoints, etc. don’t post videos very often. It’s because they’re videos are high quality and take a lot of time to research and make. Though maybe my point is incorrect because Little Joel makes the most high quality videos and he posts every day.

woke movies bad but barbie good is not the take i thought id hear today. my favorite movies in 2023 were barbie, across the spiderverse, and godzilla minus one, all of which were very popular and could be argued are "woke". people who complain about "wokeness" in media either know they're lying and dont care or are just incapable of any analysis beyond the most surface level takes.
all successful films must be antiwoke (no matter how insane it makes them look}, otherwise the mantra of "go woke go broke" becomes obviously false, and the cognitive dissonance is easier to bear when its drip fed per each new release as opposed to admitting they and their ideas are retarded, unmarketable, and most importantly, not the "silent majority"

I love how most people basically just summarised your set of two nuanced analytical videos as “haha he thought Wonka bad but Wonka was actually good, point and laugh at dumb UA-camr” That, or the people who did actually watch the video massively misunderstood the points you were trying to make. The internet is obsessed with sorting things into good or bad, and seemed to just think you were there to hate on the film.
Yo wait, we about to see a kind of UA-cam cultural revolution here where people become better at detecting and calling out the plagiarist/content mill channels for what they are? Did Hbomberguy light a fuse here or am I high on hyperbole?
I don’t think so. The left cares about plagiarism, hence the downfall of Illuminaughtii and James Somerton. But the right doesn’t care about morality one bit, which is why folks like Internet Historian and Moon are still going strong.
I watched one Moon video once, it seemed like a pretty solid video essay about neocolonialism by petroleum companies in Nigeria, and then at the end he launched into what sounded like a generic ad read for Ground News - you know, a little spiel about bias in the media and how you never know what sources to trust - only to announce the unbiased sponsor of the video as The Epoch Times.
Epoch times made an effort to 'clean up' their sloppy act a few years ago that included pipelining more carefully and backstopping a bunch of other content creators. I remember hearing about it... but you saw it in the wild!
The idea that there's no politics in the Wonka story is laughable. It's about a boy growing up in poverty in a family that's only just scraping by because his father works in a toothpaste factory. And then his father loses his job because it becomes increasingly automated and can do his job faster and cheaper. It's a scathing critique of capitalism right out the gate. That to survive in the modern world we've built a society where you need to work in an often pointless job to get paid money. And even then your job can just vanish leaving you with nothing. The hunt for the golden tickets is shown to vastly support the wealthy. The Salt family have enogh money to buy bars of chocolate in the millions, getting their employees to stop doing their actual job of shelling peanuts to shell chocolate bars instead. The average person has no hope against that. The only reason Charlie gets one at all is because he gives into a bit of greed to buy chocolate in the hopes of winning, instead of using that money he found to help his family. You could even view that as an investment that paid off, an incredibly lucky and unlikely event for someone in poverty. Media is full of politics if you have any kind of media literacy. What I think a lot of people want is to go back in time to when they weren't media literate and didn't pick up on this stuff.
It’s so gross to me how many people will talk about China but not the genocide of the Uyghurs or the oppression of Taiwan. They only care about some imaginary threat to U.S. and not the real perversions of human rights being committed.
Taiwan is not being oppressed lol, but the Uighurs are a fair point. But people do talk about the Uighurs bc people in the imperial core love to talk about other nations' acts of ethnic cleansing and not their own.
@@rhumal Taiwan is usually unbothered and moisturized in its own lane. It's just that China gatekeeps Taiwan from forming formal international diplomatic relationships and participating in worldwide government organizations (like the United Nations). And from time to time (& much more frequently now), the CCP will threaten to seize Taiwan eventually. But yeah, the Uyghur concentration camps are fucked up. The denial and gaslighting from the CCP and its supporters enrage me to no end.
I watched a Moon video once - got lured in by a clickbait title - and at first I thought it was good, but by the time I got halfway through it became clear that it was some sort of conspiracy theory channel. Thank you for talking about it: people need to have their guard up if they get recommended this channel by the UA-cam algorithm.
That reminds me of a video that I came across on my recommended, which was literally titled "You will never do anything remarkable". At first seeing that video in my recommended demoralized me, and felt too scared to watch it. However a bit of time later I realized that no matter what, he can't possibly say anything that could be even close to right, not in a million years, and that the video would go off of only assumptions, which doesn't make for "societal commentary taken to the next level". Yeah "to the next level"... of their basement... Because it seems to me that mentally, this channel has never seen the light of day.
How much I pay attention: your first video was how I found out there was going to be a new Wonka. I actually stopped it to watch the preview. As an Elementary School teacher and a parent who has actually read both Wonka books aloud to each of my kids, read a large portion of his works (including his autobiography) and seen nearly every movie version (if not all), I have absolutely struggled with Dahl's overt racism and antisemitism and the contrast between his books and movies. I thought it was a great video and understood immediately why it worked the way it did. I was also awaiting your follow up once it came out. Of course i haven't seen it yet and had to skip the review chunk because i don't want spoilers! I'll be back. I also thought you were going to tie it to the incredible (and i believe under appreciated) 2009 Sam Rockwell movie Moon. Of course, i now realize that was not what was happened, but i wanted to use that misunderstanding as an excuse to tell the world to see the 2009 Sam Rockwell movie Moon. Seriously. It only works because he is an incredible actor.
Unrelated to the plagiarism stuff, my general Wonka take was "this is a fine film for kids, but isn't really a Wonka movie". I feel like based on where we see Wonka in the original book/film, it would've been a much more powerful message if you had the same setup, even had Wonka start as naïve and whimsical, but getting beaten down by the system gradually brings out a darkness in him, pushing him to take more and more extreme measures to fight the cartel, until their feud gets one of Wonka's new friends killed. All that would ultimately lead to Wonka succeeding, but deciding he has to withdraw from the world to avoid hurting people, and ends up becoming the same kind of heartless capitalist he was trying to fight originally. All that remains of his original whimsy is a mask, kept in place to disguise the hollowness within, and avoid responsibility for the harm he does. This would be way too dark for a family film and feels a bit too close to an edgelord take of 'what if you did Wonka Breaking Bad?' or 'Wonka Whiplash', but I think that would've been a much stronger ending that actually ties into the 'whimsical-but-cruel/lonely/mad' Wonka that Gene Wilder captured so well.
My favorite thing about plagiarists is when they change a few words in a text they're ripping off of and make it worse in the process. E.g. in 20:09 - "Adderall is very close to meth chemically" (which just states the fact about the chemical formula) vs. "Adderall is pretty much meth in itself" (which is quite dangerous take to spread about prescribed medicine) And the other thing - it feels kinda weird to me that while talking about problems of YT, he chose to put alleged csam next to... Lil Nas X music video. There are tons of suggestive content out there, and he decided to mention specifically a work of a gay man...? I hope it's just an unfortunate coincidence
I saw another comment mention yours, I just wanted to say I agree. If you take a 30 XMR of adderall on tolerance and needed it for ADHD you’re not even getting a salt speck of meth effects unless you’re purposely dosing yourself that way and are likely neurotypical.
Oh no way the Lil Nas X thing is just a coincidence, the whole POINT of that music video was to conflate his own sexuality with demonic imagery just like homophobes do. He was co-opting their own rhetoric about him but to them it just proves their point. Moon citing that video in the same breath as child pornography is all I need to know he's a homophobe
I mean, his low testosterone reddit mod theory kind of checks out. I've got feminine phenotype hormone levels and I'm a reddit mod. What incredible sloothing Moon has managed here! (No, seriously, I love how he forgets that women and NB people can be moderators, too.)
@@JustATrippyDuck I daresay it's not even an intentional ignoring. It's just being up his own arse so much that he not only can't empathise with anyone not like himself, but even forgets their existence.
@@RobVespa Eh... My implication that I find moon to be sexist... is sexist? On the rest... No comment. I've actually got morals so don't lump me in with those gits.
It really is a pretty bad take. Allow people a chance to redeem themselves. That doesn't mean you need to trust blindly and can double-check to see if they're still up to their shenanigans but to say you can't ever trust them again is a bit too absolute. People actually can change and become better. If you don't want to bother with giving them a second chance, that's fine, but don't make it sound like second chances are an impossibility to even start with. What's the point of even trying to learn from your mistakes if you know you apparently can't ever be trusted again? It's not a good motivator to get people to fix their shit.
As an amateur but experienced escapist, I love when my escapism has hard-hitting social commentary. For example, as someone living below the poverty line, Squid Game hit particularly hard because if this were a real practice in my country, someone in my family (if not I, myself) would sign up to be able to afford housing and food. Yes, it's a good story on its own, and the characters really make you feel for them... but it's a different story entirely when they're talking about things you have had to deal with, and people are sympathising with it and advocating for change. Just my two cents.
Me too. 2024 is definitely the year Moon’s downfall would happen even though I have been waiting since 2022. Just like how 2023 was Illuminaughtii’s downfall.
it's not really UA-cam that rewards negative clickbait, it's ourselves. People are way more likely to engage with something that makes them directly or indirectly angry or something they can criticise. I remember seeing a post where someone said whenever they posted a question for help on reddit they'd get no response, but if they left a completely incorrect answer on an alt account they would suddenly receive lots of useful help as people tried to 'dunk' on the first reply
The first video I watch from him was of American Psycho and wow. He legit did zero research. Essentially he was saying that American Psycho was a warning and even sympathizes with Patrick Bateman. Eventhough the movie was written by two lesbian who were mocking cis men.
Thanks for having a little bit of pushback on Moon. The videos of his I came across a few years ago were super fear-baity, trying to appeal the emotion of something is wrong and going to the right wing talking pts. Also some stuff felt a little off and conspiracy-like. The biggest example I can think of was his reddit video and the talk about the founder that passed away. Something about the way he talked about him made it sound like he was assassinated. But recently I came across a Behind the Bastards podcast episode that seemed to go more in depth and cover details and background Moon never touched on.
Tbh white washed is used in that context when talking about casting in films (replacing POC characters with cultural significance with white actors)... But I also knew the original definition and the context that was referenced in Jack's video and I was surprised commentators were so aggressive about it. It's more or less the whole "anti-sjw" mindset that brought them to respond so angrily, I think.

Leftists make a habit out of this, so I'm not really shocked, but the absolutely unrepentant self fellating here is borderline comical;
"The people who align with me politically are SMART and CARE ABOUT ETHICS, and the people who disagree with me are STUPID and DON'T CARE ABOUT ETHICS!!!!"

That's a good take and example
@@googleuser1422 plagiarists don't steal from people they like or admire, they steal from people they vehemently despise and then stick their tongue out going 'LEL GET TROLLED'. To give an example, I HATE Warhammer 40k (No, its not the typical 'imperium of man is fascist, fascism is bad, therefore I hate!' but because I genuinely think 99% of the writing in that universe sucks ass) but it was what inspired me to write my own Sci-fi opera because it gave me a vindicated feeling of 'getting one over' the fandom. Of course, I'd later mature and realize that its okay to like or dislike something, and instead continued on my sci-fi opera idea not as a hate piece but because I wanted to genuinely write something original. Unfortunately most plagiarists go through the first phase and never the second.

Honestly, this is what happened with me and Barbie. It was decent as someone's first foray into the topics at hand, but for anyone who was already even remotely aware, it was more basic and simple than babies first activism.
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 if anything it taught me that the general public is not even remotely discerning, and their opinion on most topics will probably be woefully outdated, and even after being exposed to it, will probably not look beyond the surface level of a topic and that most people would prefer to examine films from a lens of consumption and nostalgia, rather than being critical of the media they consume.

Little Joel just has a staff of even Littler Joels underneath him at his beck and call and they're the ones who make those videos happen
@@northstarjakobs Is this the same Joel who criticised the film _300_ for being cryptofash? That was such an unbelievably dumb take, I felt my brain cells slipping away the longer the vid progressed. I couldn't bring myself to finish it, it was that dumb.

woke movies bad but barbie good is not the take i thought id hear today.
my favorite movies in 2023 were barbie, across the spiderverse, and godzilla minus one, all of which were very popular and could be argued are "woke". people who complain about "wokeness" in media either know they're lying and dont care or are just incapable of any analysis beyond the most surface level takes.
all successful films must be antiwoke (no matter how insane it makes them look}, otherwise the mantra of "go woke go broke" becomes obviously false, and the cognitive dissonance is easier to bear when its drip fed per each new release as opposed to admitting they and their ideas are retarded, unmarketable, and most importantly, not the "silent majority"
It’s so stupid that woke has now become part of nerdy fandoms and believe it’s genuine criticism.
"Woke" is just a word for anything conservatives don't like

I love how most people basically just summarised your set of two nuanced analytical videos as “haha he thought Wonka bad but Wonka was actually good, point and laugh at dumb UA-camr”

Well of course he had to do that at the end. Would any sensible person keep watching if he OPENED with that.
Epoch times made an effort to 'clean up' their sloppy act a few years ago that included pipelining more carefully and backstopping a bunch of other content creators. I remember hearing about it... but you saw it in the wild!
He also kinda sexsist . He made a video that called “why men are weaker then ever before “

I watched a Moon video once - got lured in by a clickbait title - and at first I thought it was good, but by the time I got halfway through it became clear that it was some sort of conspiracy theory channel. Thank you for talking about it: people need to have their guard up if they get recommended this channel by the UA-cam algorithm.
same
That reminds me of a video that I came across on my recommended, which was literally titled "You will never do anything remarkable".
Moon is indeed a great movie.
OH YEAH I loved Moon!
"Adderall is pretty much meth in itself" (which is quite dangerous take to spread about prescribed medicine)
And the other thing - it feels kinda weird to me that while talking about problems of YT, he chose to put alleged csam next to...
@@BishopShotgun not addressing the difference in how adderall will affect a neurotypical person vs an adhder is very deliberate

Once someone plagiarizes it's safe to say they can never be trusted again
Once a criminal always a criminal? Eh
Unless, they start making let's play videos or whatever they won't have to write anything
I don't think that's true. but as long as we lack any way of really holding people accountable for it I can understand why people feel this way.
Did you come up with that yourself?😂
If you're an experienced escapist how come you haven't escaped poverty?
Moon is guilty of being the thing I find most disgusting and despise the most on the internet.
A content mill... No need to go much further
Moon uses wojaks in every single video, that's already bad enough

And the book was written by a gay man. It's heavily implied that Patrick is a closeted gay man

I did did laugh when someone on the last vid thought you saying white washed was about race.
