So, Pontypool was a radio play originally and I recommend listening to that version (it's here on UA-cam) because it works a lot better as audio only and the ending is much better.
Dude, you kinda totally missed the point of the utterly inappropriate Lawrence of Arabia scene. Ask yourself: what was happening in the Middle East at the time this film was released? What was the US up to? The brownface is half the point
Interesting. Please elaborate on your theory. I've seen plenty of breakdowns on Pontypool recently, and all of them just fob off the Lawrence of Arabia scene as being what it is on the surface, a bit of awkward comedic relief. And as someone who grew up in a small, remote Canadian town like Pontypool, this would totally be the sort of thing culturally ignorant church folk would see no issue with, a few decades ago. (Or even now, frankly, if they thought they could get away with it.) To be honest, I've never actually seen Lawrence of Arabia. All I know about it is the general background of it being a mediocre white savior movie that was endlessly made fun of in pop culture for being a flop.
@@OneMadApple The War in Iraq. It's not quite Arabia, but I can certainly imagine Cheney watching that film and muttering "no prisoners" as he contemplated the profitability of Blackwater, on his way to brief the POTUS. The wearing of brown face can be understood as representative of the lack of serious public debate, historical understanding, and cultural awareness among both the general public and the political class as the US blundered its way into a disastrous war..You got that point, so all I'm doing is restating it. Arabia, Iraq, it's all the same, right? I think someone actually said that to me, back in the 00s.
Surface level theory here, if language and specifically English is what is transmitting the virus and destroying the town, is it a commentary on colonialism? That's what seemed like to me.

Lean was a Master. It's "problematic" (ugh) but as a film it's fkin fantastic. Best seen on the big screen.
