  • In this episode, my pal Jerald brought me a 70 455 Stage 1 Rochester Quadrajet to rebuild. I figured it would be fun to bring you along and identify the trickery inside of the factory Stage 1 carburetor and what makes it a Stage 1 Carb.

    I circle track raced Buicks w/455'S, loved my Q-Jet's! You could hear my carb anywhere on a 3/8 mile or shorter track. The Waaaa was as loud as all the open exhausts. The massive torque of a 12.5 to 13:1 455 made me impossible to catch on turn exit. SBC Camaros had little chance.

    Very cool piece of history you got there, I wonder how many Hemi 426 cars that carb helped to beat?😎

    It's just about impossible to find a good core quadrajet these days, especially for a very specific application carb. Most quadrajets floating around for sale have either been through some sort of commercial remanufacturing service where they loose most of their original parts, or even worse than that they usually have been fooled with by people who have no clue how to work on them and usually ruins them beyond repair, good cores and parts carbs are worth their weight in gold if you plan on fooling around with q-jets.

    I wonder if you could drill out the spot where the pin broke off on the carb body, and replace it with a roll pin.

      That's exactly how I fixed it! 2 3/16" roll pins that were a 1/2" long. Great minds think alike!

    Factory secondary rods should be AU. IIRC

      That’s awesome to know! Thanks so much! By looking at the taper and measuring them, they were close to the AY. I’m glad you chimed in.

      The primary jets and rods you pulled out match the 70 factory service manual specs. The secondary rods should have VERY small stampings on them, probably need a magnifying glass to read them.

      What does the instructions with the camshaft say? I’m not familiar with this camshaft, but I’ve seen some seriously huge camshafts and stock rockers used in the past. I’m sure it would work, but I do not know this camshaft.

      It's the shape of the primaries, its gonna be really difficult to explain here in this small area and would be best to just google it since there will be pictures and maybe some video.

    Are the throttle shafts loose?

    • @mr.roddersneighborhood2740
      @mr.roddersneighborhood2740  Рік тому

      No, it has its own set of problems, but loose throttle shafts don’t seem to be an issue. The linkage is funky though and all throttle blades open at the same time for some reason.
