Let's set the record straight... Jontron, Pewdiepie, Colin Moriarty, Phillip De Franco

  • It seems like a lot of people in the industry are having a tough time right now, sometimes by choice, and sometimes by the 'out rage' machine. Jontron is under fire for his opinions about people of color and immigration. Pewdiepie because he is a "anti-Semite'. Colin Morarity of kinda funny games is now a 'terrible monster' and the kind of funny team is 'sexist'. Phillip defranco is under fire for making political oriented content.
Today I wanted to talk about those issues, about why I rarely talk about those issues, and what I really think about this kind of stuff.

our people are pro freedom and, as much as we like to deny it, most of us wouldn't say no to a fight with an antagonistic dickhead.
what are they gonna do? the west will be around, making jokes, long after islam as a whole is dead, much less some pitiful children throwing a tantrum 'cos the non-islamic world is better than them in every metric. fuck isis.

It's more funny because everyone just picks a side and doesn't actually want to co operate or discuss, they just want to debate. Which people think debating is good, but I think it's the worst social pass time since social media started existing. And twitter is plagued with people either trying to prove themselves right or defaming others because they said some offensive tweet 7 years ago. It's bullshit, and that's why I will never get a Twitter account.

I think you're one of the most adult people on the internet, Boogie. People might misconstrue your opinions as being "on the fence," but I think you display traits that most people nowadays don't have, which is being tolerant of other people's views. People seem to think that being tolerant of other people's opinions means you have to agree with them to some extent, and that's not true. Being tolerant only means that you disagree with them, but you also treat them with respect. Jon's opinions about race might be uneducated and dumb, but that doesn't mean he should be attacked for it. I think he genuinely thinks these things, not out of malice, but because he just thinks a certain way.

I also firmly believe that as much as your are free to say what you will you must be as willing to accept the consequences that come along as well. The government is not kicking in their door to keep them from talking . Their rights are not being taken away . Simply they dealing with the reaction to the things they said , from their fellow citizens who have the same rights to say what they wish also . If it is okay for them to say things other people see as offensive then they may hear things they perceive as offensive to them.

Freedom from *government* censorship. People and corporations are free to act in their own interest, and if, for example, I don't want to watch any more Jontron videos because of what he said, that's my right.
He should absolutely be allowed to say what he wants to say, and I should absolutely be allowed to react to that in any way I see fit (within reason, I'm not advocating violence here). You can't both say "This man can say whatever he wants" and also say "This person(or company) must support him!" even if those things are antithetical to their values, or even just because it hits their pocketbook in some way.

Taking his argument and twisting it around to make it seem like he was actually making a comment of what should happen. Basically just shoved words in his mouth.
If that bothered you, I'm pretty sure then that's because you don't like the idea that you might have to one day pay up for how you act online much like how you would act in reality because the internet was placed into our laps without any form of barricading people from turning into self entitled children who think they deserve everything and can behave how ever they want.

I think some sensitivity is needed, but the way it's exercised now is death sentence, really.. It's more focused on being hurt and hurting the ones with the 'wrong opinions' first, not on how to make the issue better. It is hurtful, it should be.. but problem with many countries is people are hiding their inner racist/sexist/other-ists to not step on anyone's toes/ be good, and that doesn't help us grow
I don't agree that it's a sign of mental disorder, because these are matters that are so close to people's basic rights/identity

"credit him for not following a narrative"
he clearly is following the narrative that black people are inherently more likely to commit a crime based on their race. not to mention the other countless narratives he's following. a different opinion to mainstream or the left is fine but when it's outright racist, that's not okay. it's so harmful

People upset with someone like JonTron are simply expressing their own free speech rights, just like he is. He has the right to say whatever he wants, but that doesn't mean he has the right to say it, free of consequences from the public. If they think what he says is fucked up, then they don't have to "tolerate" his opinions...they can just unsubscribe. In EXACTLY the same way we can recommend people, to others, that create good content, we can also warn people about those that create toxic content.
Given the times we're in, the outrage with his opinions aren't idle concerns. JonTron is throwing around some pretty evil, heavy racist shit in a time when we openly have white nationalist sympathizers in key roles in the white house. You insinuate that people are upset, because they need to be outraged about something or another, but holy shit dude, have you heard what this guy's been saying? This isn't some experimental off-to-college ideas, these are hardcore, bigoted, extremist viewpoints. I mean, honestly, what does it TAKE to be able to condemn someone here? Does he have to get a full blown pointed white hood, or what? People are upset because they're scared of where this country is headed, and the looming possibilities of war and fascism. So yeah, people are a little fucking touchy, and understandably so. Tension is high, man.
It's pretty easy to make a correlation between "tolerance and understanding" and "normalization". There's a backlash because some people refuse to accept that blatant racism is simply going to be acceptable as a thing that some, otherwise normal public persona, spouts off about. This is what free speech is all about. I don't want my grocer to start going off about "the Mexicans" when they're bagging my groceries either, and it's fair to say that their CHOICE to do say may affect their job. If you can't roll with the punches, maybe you shouldn't be trying to make a living off of show-biz, as public reactions, to your public opinions, comes with the territory.
Meanwhile, the church, and certain other conservative groups, have been trying to kill rock and roll, pinball, video games, horror movies, etc. for decades. Again - it's called free speech. If someone says something that makes you angry, you SHOULD be speaking up about it. When these ideas have to collide, which they often do, we have the conflicts that culturally define us...hopefully for the better.

    • @antifagoat6591
      @antifagoat6591 7 років тому +6

Amen. Political correctness deserves to get flack, but the reason that it's a continuing process is that as time goes on, certain phrases and views become unprofessional, repulsive, and outdated. You're free to spout this shit, but you'll face consequences if you do so publicly.
I also chock this up to "no face syndrome" as I call it. Jontron and co. are public personalities, but it's a very different kind of celebrity from the tv and music stars, whose content is monitored for audiences and the public is always hounding them (paparazzi). Internet celebrities potentially don't have to have any face-to-face interaction with anybody and you won't be seeing news outlets following them around. Online, we are talking not truly to people but to computer monitors that spit out others responses in cold text… That just got meta considering it's 1 AM as I write this and I certainly have never met YOU in real life. But that's the point.

Actually. I'd say the overarching problem would be social media. In every form, it is an unproductive shithole, bereft of any real value to anyone or anything. It exists solely to suck people in to bullshit drama that has no relevance in their day to day lives. Even at its' best, it is still just second hand socializing, the McDonalds of social interaction. And the amount of attention it recieves is the only factor for its' own importance. Its' like the golden calf all over again. Get enough people to believe in something, and it becomes a god. Right now, social media is the new god. A god maintained through the worship of the stupid and impressionable. Their influence is only getting stronger. Just like McDonalds, this god may be impossible to stop in any capacity. The best you can do is steer clear.

You can make a reasonable argument saying that it went too far and he shouldn't have made it, and I can definitely see where you'd be coming from, but to say he's anti-semitic or a nazi or racist, etc, is stupid IMO. He's simply a rookie comedian who likes dark/edgy humor, and that's it. He's still a really good guy who's done far more help than hurt, far as I can tell.
Jontron, however.....Yeah, Jontron is a fucking dumpster fire and a half. Making entire rants about how minorities are trying to commit, "white genocide" and saying that they have, "contempt for America's culture", as well as baselessly generalizing black people and immigrants as criminals, etc etc; Those aren't fucking jokes. He's serious with that shit, the kind of shit you'd expect to see on a white-supremacist website. To quote someone who I no longer respect, "I ain't having that shit." There is a difference between anger and hate. A mother can be angry with her child but it does mean she hates them. Anger is normal in the appropriate situation for it is the thing that has started movements, revolutions, and ideological shifts that have made the world a better place. It attempts to work out a solution. Hate is bad. Hate is failure to come to terms with what is and doesn't want to change what is but destroy what is. Where as anger is understanding of both side, hate is blind and wants to eradicate the problem instead of fixing it. The worst part is that it is contagious, spreading like a wild fire, engulfing people in it's flames of wrath and fury until everything around us is blackened. It corrupts our lives filling us with unhappiness and hatred of ourselves consuming us in the process. We are blinded by it as we seek not to work out the issue but destroy each other. Where are we as a country and what do we truly want as a nation. Let us realize this and guide us towards a future without the flames of hatred so that we may come together to hold hands once again.

That being said, this video makes me an even bigger fan, because you may possibly be one of the only people left in this country, if not the world that can "think in the gray area". The last half of this video is exactly what I have talked about with my best friend and also my wife. Gray is the best color in the universe, and only laughing at the very worst in your life can make those things bearable. Thank you for standing on this hill, I would do the same in your shoes.

They're not the same thing. What Pewdiepie did was fine - a parody by going to extremes to make a wider point. What Jon did was not - it was flat out racism and bigotry.
Grouping these four together does a disservice to the wider argument. Jon wasn't targeted because he was a "UA-camr" by the "traditional media" - he was called out because he was a racist and bigot. There's no point rationalising it beyond that.
You can agree to their right to have an opinion, but on the flip side, you should also agree that media publications have a right to an opinion about those opinions.

Dude, free speech does not preclude blowback. Everybody is free to say what they want (basically) in America, but nobody is free from criticism. So if you're going to say something very wrong, and especially in front of millions of people, you had better be prepared for the consequences. You're not going to jail, but you may lose a bunch of supporters, financial and otherwise. If you want to preach calm, aim that sermon the other direction.

If people haven't seen this yet, we are at the point of a civil war of sorts in our country. There are two sides. It's becoming difficult to weigh opinion with outright hindrance of the way you think this country needs to be. Left or right there's a very black and white (no not a racist statement) line being drawn by the population of this country. At some point there's going to be an intolerance that overcomes peoples fears of dying on hills.

  • @MarioFanferlife

I think what everyone needs to understand is that there is a difference between criticizing an opinion, thought, or feeling and blowing any one of them out of proportion. Blowing any social situation out of proportion is never a good thing. It's also not right to generalize them. Whether it is people who are 'oversensitive' or not as well, no one deserves to be completely chastised and scarred for what they say. It doesn't help anyone. It doesn't help those that do it, and it doesn't help the ones getting that treatment. It just creates animosity that may likely not change the situation for the better. Just fester and grow into something out of control. Sadly, we live in an age when this mistake is not only incredibly easy to make - whether on purpose or not - but also almost instantly can't be completely recovered from. These things spread so rapidly, that you can't contain them. People's minds and feelings will be changed for good, and not all of them will think twice anytime soon.
All the drama helps is those that feel threatened by individuals that succeed where those feel only they can. Corporations and people who are on a higher end of the food chain that think they won't stay that way if they don't ruin people's lives. It's what a lot of society has come to, unfortunately.

Man, it's cool that you can try to remain objective, but there are some real site hawks here in the bottom half who are using this as a platform to justify hate. I agree fully. Before a certain experience I had, I was quick to criticize and bite the heads of off people who made "offensive" jokes. Then, I was given the opportunity to write a showcase for my school. I wanted some elements of dark comedy added into it, such as a joke about there being rats in the air vents of the school because it is such an old building and another talking about how the "good christian girl" got high and made out with the priest's son in a baptismal font. My comedy isn't for everyone, but my teacher nearly took away our showcase and attacked my grade because of it. Her personal opinion, I know, will now ruin my grades and my relations with her forever. Now that she has cut the show to the bare minimum, it is not enjoyable for anyone anymore. Like the internet, it is so closely under watch and squeaky clean and inoffensive it is boring. It's tiring. Comedy should have no limits. Neither should art. Or creation. Agree with it or not it is the right of people to express themselves despite your opinion. And don't ruin someone's well-being over a joke. A joke is a joke. The world just needs to learn to laugh at itself other than all of this crap keeping me from even writing the word "idiot" in a school production.

Historically these kinds of opinions have driven people to do pretty horrible things, and the out cry is to stop it before it starts.

  • @smallfox8623
    @smallfox8623 6 років тому +4

This line of thinking is so extremely toxic. Criticism is not rendered void as soon as the person under fire says it's just an opinion. Everyone is free to express their opinion, however this goes both ways. As much as people are free to express their opinions, so are people disagreeing with those opinions. You should respect the person and attack the opinion, this video advocates for respecting the person, and accepting the opinion, which is absurd thinking. If everyone can have an opinion while being immune to criticism related to those opinions, the world would be going nowhere. This extends further into jokes. You are absolutely allowed to joke about anything, but you also have to be aware that your joke might not be all that funny to everyone, after all people are allowed to have their opinion on the joke.
This goes even more wrong when someone's opinions are based in absolute perversion of statistics, and disgraced studies.

One sorry if there bad grammar.
And two I completely agree and plus its 2017 why can't we evolve from this bullcrap of peoples boycotting others over a stupid opinion or even over different people beliefs in politics even if its just a stupid joke Especially the minority of one that's feel the need of acting like Keyboard warrior/Sjw's to make you look like the bad guy and accusing anyone behide their back of shit you or anyone hasn't done Especially with the shit talking one,
And i been hearing this shit only happen to the bigger name UA-camr Which isn't true Because its can happen to the small channels as well not just big channels And i seen it happen with me and some of my friends being attack by bias keyboard warrior asshole with the different is big name UA-camr have a better chance at surviving while with small channels its depend on how you can handier them and just hope you don't have to closed your channels and start over by making a new one oh wait UA-cam limit how many channels you can verify so that's small youtuber is screwed over if he/she reached their limit. And all over a stupid opinion or even a joke or if they just don't like you. And can be really discouraging with youtube being to hard enough as it is.
Again people its 20 Bucking 17 do we need to continue doing shit like putting others down over politics Especially over a stupid opinion or even a joke Because i'am really surprise being a asshole at this cavemanish level is still a thing on the internet And not a thing of the past yet,
And you can argue its the internet deal with its But sometime thing are taking to far to the extreme that's we shouldn't have to even deal with
Btw i don't think politics should have anything to do with Video Games or even jon voice acting career
Ps i'am nether far Left or Right I'am of the middle. :D

its a battle over who is going to be in charge, and most youtubers (worried about whether or not they can monetize their work) are looking at it backwards: no one watches youtbe videos because theyre interested in the ads, we watch because we are interested in the content. it SHOULD BE that the content creators have the power to decide which companies are allowed to advertise in their videos, NOT that anonymous advertisers have the power to control the content produced by the creators. its up to you all, as creators, to fight for that.

I get that this should be superficial; I shouldn't place trust in people I only know from a distance. You make exceptions, you know?
