There could be multiple reasons for Toby doing this with the sprites, coming from an animator. It’s possible it could have been a run cycle, although most likely just kept it in to save time on animation rather than hiding a cut scene. It could also have Ben time constraints, there’s a lot of really good pixel animation in the game, sometimes cutting corners on not as important shorts happen, especially in sprite animation which sometimes subtle things like that don’t get noticed by the masses, kinda like how none of us noticed till now they shrink. Not a critique, this video was great and I love your content, just my perspective on it
Man, I love the amount of work you put into these videos! The editing, the script, everything! Even the intro has so much stuff going on and it's great :D
When I played for the first time, I died to Toriel and like the fool I am, I immediately looked up tips for the fight. When I saw that “Toriel will refuse to kill you” I was so confused because, no? She definitely did just kill me. So I tried the fight again and lo and behold, she purposefully missed this time. I was so confused for quite a while.
That's cause I believe there is a Damage threshold she reaches where she will stop hitting you, But its possible to die the turn before this takes effect
She hard-stops her actual attacks at 3hp. Fighting her with no armor (aka the bandage) causes her to deal 4 damage to you, so if you keep taking damage from 12 or so hp constantly when your hp is at a multiple of 4… Also if you die to her once, she subconsciously remembers it and holds back when you’re at 4 HP the next time. Not sure if this is the case for the murder route.
Those 4 frames of Toriel looking at you in heartbroken panic are why I focused on lore in the game, even aaaaallll the way back in 2015 when UNDERTALE released.
I think in the original Undertale demo, Toriel's shocked sprite displays several frames longer. Could be due to the fact that she's essentially the final boss of the demo.
As an animator, 8 frames is about the shortest you can hold on something to be noticed by most people, though they probably won't consciously notice it unless you hold for longer. Anything less and you will still see it, but it will be more like a feeling or impression, which is why crazy old school wipes with duplicated body parts or super wide bodies are felt but you don't necessarily register how weird they look as if looking at the still image. I'd also say the running pose is just them in perspective. It looks like the heads, far feet, and far hand are larger while the bodies shrink as their bodies are going forwards. So they squash in anticipation, and then stretch forward into the pose. They'd have a more obvious stretch if we were viewing it sideways. Their bodies also stay the same size when they fall, and as they turn sideways you can see more obviously their bodies and legs are hunched, especially on Kris.
What if something hid something like messages or hints to the story in single frames flashing randomly? Like just enough to get an impression of what happened but not conciously "see" it
You're quickly becoming one of my favorite channels right now, and I really love the txt to speech voice narration! I hope you'll keep at this bc it's really good content
“Failure can be an opportunity for discovery” I’m writing that in my positivity quotes journal. I struggle with “failing” a lot so that was really helpful to hear and I’m sure will help future me as well
From let’s plays of the Undertale demo, it seems early demo versions allow you to die to Toriel much easier. It was apparently patched at some point, which combined with the issue of armor stats and luck can make this difficult.
HalfBread, I know it isn't likely that you'll see this comment, but I've been bingeing through your videos and I just wanted to say that this is incredible. I know you don't need to hear it from me, but you're clearly very strong and what you're doing is amazing. I think that it's incredible that you make these videos despite the struggles.
Man these videos are so entertaining and interesting. I like the tts voice more than a real voice in these types of explanation videos. Either way your videos and editing are great, so good job
Frankly you're one of the only small UA-camrs I really watch anymore, but I hope that changes soon! I can see you put so much heart and soul into your content, it's only fair that you'd get more Subscribers in my eyes!
Weird, I could've sworn it was still possible to get hit by Toriel's flames when she's trying to make them avoid you, by hugging the top corners. Did I imagine that?
Hm, I just tried that but no matter what strat I use (pick a corner and stay there, run rapidly between the two corners, etc) I can't seem to get hit that way. So either it was patched out, or it's *super* rare.
Y’know, even with a TTS voice, you still put a lot of effort into the video that the overall product is really commendable. Honestly, you use the TTS voice in a way that’s actually commending your style, giving it something unique rather than being a “laziness” tactic.
BIG THEORY: OKAY so you know how Deltarune starts with a character creation, but then the narrator says "No one gets to choose who they are in this world." Alright so here's the thing, Undertale's Genocide ending is basically the inverse of Deltarune's beginning. Chara says "Let us erase this pointless world, and move on to the next." Which prompts the player choices "ERASE" or "DO NOT." But even if you choose DO NOT, Chara says "You must have misunderstood. SINCE WHEN WERE YOU THE ONE IN CONTROL?" If they are moving on to the next world, a world where no one gets to choose who they are, and Deltarune is almost like an alternate universe, then is Kris actually Frisk from Undertale after a genocide ending? This would even explain the nightmares and sleep trouble Kris has, recalling all the people they've hurt. What do you think about this theory peoples?
The only thing that sort of debunks this theory is that toby said UT and DT aren't connected in any way, as if they exist independently... and I think it was in response to this particular theory.... so... sorry to burst your bubble, yeah...
@@cuozannt still, even if not directly related, there could still be a sort of parallel to this idea, we've already seen examples of ideas in undertale being utilized in an all new way.
It's been so many years since I played Undertale and followed content online, and it's amazing how I'm still finding out things I didn't know about. Like this Toriel sprite. Oh damn
I have to say I love your videos, somehow you gave amazing personality to a TTS voice and I feel like if I hear that TTS voice anywhere else I might just immediately think of you,
When you said "she reads it at the start of each turn" i imagined toriel with a book going like "mhm so i just lower my attack and try not to hit the child"
Oi! I have a tip. If you wait too long in the fight with low health, Toriel will Asgore you with a very hard to dodge hand attack. I used to die that way a few times when I first did it. I don't know if it's real anymore, though. To clarify, I played on the Switch version.
Maybe Toriel does more damage on a pacifist run. I did a run where I kept the bandage on during a pacifist run and remember her doing 5 damage (although I may be misremembering).
I never used to like text to speech commentary videos, because of the soulless delivery. But you, somehow, have put so much personality into the text to speech, making me laugh often. To me, your text to speech is your signature, and makes you stand out from the crowd. Please keep making videos!
It’s interesting how surprisingly complicated the code is for how much damage Toriel deals per hit, given that damage for most other bosses excluding Sans’ KR is usually straightforward and consistent.
i managed to get this first try, unintentionally. my brain thought "oh hey, if halfbreadchaos took so long to get it, then its fine." and proceeded to die
I had watched the video only till this point 7:48. i know why (Tu)toriel doesn't make that face sometimes. when you're on genocide route in undertale, then toriel give a f**k about your death. only on pacifist there she will make that face.
Honestly I don’t mind the text to speech. It’s one of the few channels where it doesn’t sound annoying and actually has good humour and animation behind it. Plus your editing is really good too

This video is great thank you so much!
@@rz2374 I know, but I somehow hit one hp during his final attack and it didn't end. Then I got hit again and took 0 damage. It was probaly a glitch that the fight ended late.
@@Swagpion Oh ok. That's definitely a glitch, but it's interesting that you still didn't die after when papyrus carried on. Papyrus really doesn't want you to die, even if the game glitches out!
I think they are shrinking, because the dark world is canonically smaller than the light world. We see the light world version of the great board in chapter 1 on the floor, and it’s extremely small. But when we cross it in chapter one, it takes us a bit to cross it. I think that Lightners do physically shrink when they cross into the Dark World

Flowey watching HalfBread fight Tori: "Wtf are you doing????"
HalfBread: *"SCIENCE!!!!!!"*
Let's gooo new HalfBreadChaos video! I always love seeing your uploads
Hey, I don't know where exactly I've seen it, but I believe Toby tried to patch out dying to Toriel after some time Undertale was released. That's why so many early playthroughs documented dying to her, but it's much harder to replicate now, as you may have noticed.
That is extremely false
You are so kind and so correct! I greatly appreciate both your technical abilities in being able to analyze all of these complex details AND the way that you emphasize camaraderie and patience. It's too easy to find folks who are technically knowledgeable on a topic, but so bitter and condescending that it's impossible to watch them. Heaven forbid they ever get something wrong, because they treat mistakes like crimes and double down to cover them up. Your honesty is so refreshing! Thank you for all of the hard work that you put into these videos.
I don't think the running sprites are shrunken down. I think Kris and Susie are just hunched forward, making it look like they're shorter from our perspective.
Okay but like. I'm pretty sure Kris's body gets smaller because they're at an unusual angle relative to the camera. Same with Susie, actually.
I died to Toriel when trying to show my dad that you can’t die to Toriel.

I am always happy to see a new HalfBreadChaos video :)
Offhand but your channel is really great and i really appreciate how your videos are so in depth and acknowledge different possibilities, which is a breath of fresh air in the Deltarune fandom! Even with the TTS your commentary is always entertaining to listen to too, keep up the good work!
Finally, I've been wondering how dying to Toriel works for so long now, great video.
A small thing, but Toby doesn't make the sprites, Temmie does.
wrong both toby and temmie does the sprites, with temmie sometimes improving sprites toby does, for example the square bed that appear in alphys lab was a sprite made by toby
What the other person said
Temmie does the more complex sprites and/or fixes Toby's ones, but Toby also does art for the game.
Pretty sure he made Toriel
I read this as “Toby doesn’t make mistakes, Temmie does” lmao
The surprised Susie sprite is by Toby tho
I really like the tts you chose, it's nice to listen to. Also I love these videos with obscure things.
this is my favourite game theory channel. i love how you always provide solid information and specify when you are going of the rail, it makes it so much easier to not have inacurate headcanons
i've watched almost all of your videos and godDAMN i love how obsessed with research you are. it makes me think of Max Derrat, another rather small youtuber, who goes as in depth as you into metal gear solid and other media. it's absolutely my kinda content and i hope you keep making this stuff for a long time
I find it amazing that the video started with talking about sprite Easter eggs, and then transitioned into a 3-step guide on how to die to Toriel. Marvelous.
hey halfbread, i had an idea the other day, and after watching your video i decided to do a little theory crafting of my own. thanks for being an inspiration to me.
Toriel be like:what do you call a burning frisk?

can I say love your content all of it I saw every video and having such unique perspective on theories, I like seeing all theories and seeing how they could support or debunk each other, yours I love because they seem very plausible in my comparisons and it scares me
The day is always better when HalfBreadChaos posts! Never stop the greatness!
But at the same time, make sure to keep yourself happy, and take breaks when stressed.
These videos help me, and many others as well, so please remember to help yourself. ❤️

"how to be murdered by your goat mom in 3 simple steps"
WHY
Fighting her with no armor (aka the bandage) causes her to deal 4 damage to you, so if you keep taking damage from 12 or so hp constantly when your hp is at a multiple of 4…
Also if you die to her once, she subconsciously remembers it and holds back when you’re at 4 HP the next time.
Just painfully playing scenes out over and over again is also my process for figuring out what will happen godspeed brethren
I'd love to see an au/fan comic about toriel killing frisk on accident and how it affects her (pretending frisk never reset after it)
Dude 6:41 felt so triumphant hell yes.

I’m writing that in my positivity quotes journal.
Yes true i died in demo on accdient
that speech at the end was very nice, thank u halfbread
HalfBread, I know it isn't likely that you'll see this comment, but I've been bingeing through your videos and I just wanted to say that this is incredible. 6:00 I hope he knows that toriel can still accidentally hit you at 1 health, I've never had troubles dying to them
Me after hearing Toriel stops her turn when you get hit by her hands:
Undertale IRL:
Frisk: *Catches these hands.*
The Fandom: DON'T TOUCH THE CHILD.
Weird, I could've sworn it was still possible to get hit by Toriel's flames when she's trying to make them avoid you, by hugging the top corners. Did I imagine that?
oh yea i remember that, it was prolly in a undertale secrets video or smthing
Honestly the only theory linking the worlds of Undertale and Deltarune I’ve heard that doesn’t seem outlandish or convoluted, props
@@EditUnivers75 just make it a headcannon, you find it cannon knowing it isnt, like a fan-cannon

There is that one frame when entering the dark world, where you can see kris’ red eye (I don’t know which exact frame)
i saw that when i was planning a snowgrave run and i thought i was hallucinating
edit: i believe its when kris enters the dark world alone
@@BagelBagelBagelBa Idk I saw it when grabbing the stuff from chapter one into castle town during chapter 2
Toriel: “So I asked myself, what would Snail Jesus do?”
Classic as always, keep up the good work!
Oi! I have a tip. If you wait too long in the fight with low health, Toriel will Asgore you with a very hard to dodge hand attack. I used to die that way a few times when I first did it. I don't know if it's real anymore, though. To clarify, I played on the Switch version.
I swear man you deserve 1 millikn subs dude your videos are amazing
Maybe Toriel does more damage on a pacifist run. I did a run where I kept the bandage on during a pacifist run and remember her doing 5 damage (although I may be misremembering).
Armor doesn’t change defense when you edit your save to wear it as opposed to equipping normally
as he said, bandage boosted it to 4 not 5, was that run one where you played with the name "Frisk" since that is hard mode
@@sergioandresquirogavelarde6816 no I was doing a normal pacifist run.
"This *is* a pacifist run!" I cry, smacking her directly in the face with a stick.
She never intended to only make you see reason so her being the reason you die, must absolutely break her heart
Already knowing that this was about that last videos error
It's wild how wholesome you come off just using text to speech. Kudos
I agree with what you said at the end, because I can easily defeat undyne the undying but die to papyrus every time
I never used to like text to speech commentary videos, because of the soulless delivery.
On my first playthrough, I accidentally died to Toriel, I'm not even joking!
So THAT'S why I could never get that to work and started to doubt the existence of the freeze frame for a good few minutes.
Plus your editing is really good too
0:49FLINT LOCK WOOD!
i watched jacks undertale playthrough and i saw the shocked toriel sprite when he died. it was so easy. it's nice to know that other people have that power.

what you said about missing things that seem obvious not being a sign of stupidity means so much to me. I always felt so horrible for missing things when reading books especially (and then people finding it weird when i started reading more slowly so i could understand everything better). This video is great thank you so much!
6:54 i remember that i got the toriel shocked face without trying when i was playing a long time ago
I already knew about this but you made it interesting by talking about the more interesting bits
Did you know it's actually impossible to die to papyrus, while playing undertale in the ps4. I got hit by papy at 1hp and didn't take damage
Its impossible to die to papyrus on all versions. He will reduce the damage he gives until your at 1 hp, then send you to the garage
When I tried to get the Toriel freeze-frame, I just ran into the attacks while they were avoiding me.
you can literally just say you're embarrassed to record your voice. that's fine.
I think they are shrinking, because the dark world is canonically smaller than the light world. We see the light world version of the great board in chapter 1 on the floor, and it’s extremely small. But when we cross it in chapter one, it takes us a bit to cross it. I think that Lightners do physically shrink when they cross into the Dark World
As a game dev and animator I want to comment on the "small Kris sprite" thing - having weird looking frames that are too fast to see is really common in animation. Sometimes subtle things like that just make an animation feel better!
I see it as the both of them sprinting forward- leaning forward a bit before leaping
I love your channel and the way you present your videos and thoughts. Really inspiring me to make more videos. Much love!
