Thanks for the review. Just purchased a Jade 28 for my wife. I was waiting for you to pull a rabbit out of the upper part of your pack. You had everything up there!

Hahahha :) I do carry a lot of stuff!!! But after getting lost once and almost having to spend the night out and not being prepared at all, I now carry everything I would need for an overnight emergency situation.

+Horror Kid I wouldn't test it against a grizzly. I carry mine for humans and cougars.

Horror Kid @ I watched several videos on bear spray and the situation you use it in varies. Bear attacks are very uncommon, but there are occasions where they can occur. For example, there is safety in numbers. The more people you hike with the better. Many hikers recommend never hiking alone in bear country. Saw a special on UA-cam about a guy and his daughter that hiked in a remote national park in Canada and the protective grizzly bear not only attacked the dad but his daughter too because they both got too close to her cubs!!!! It depends on many different factors. But the principle main reasons why people get attacked is because the bear is easily startled or spooked. So if you are in bear country, make your presence known by either carrying a bear bell or clapping your hands occasionally. Once they hear you, they will most likely know you are human and get out of the way (especially in areas where they are hunted.) Along berry patches, off the trail, and streamside during fish runs is when your likely to encounter one. Avoid hiking during dawn and dusk unless you absolutely have too. Store food and do all of your cooking at least 100 yards away from your tent. Bear canisters are excellent because you just close and lock them. No bear bag or ropes to mess with. But for safety, never store food, anything that smells, dirty dishes, or your cooking clothes in your tent. And one thing you never want to do is get between a mother bear and her cubs because she will aggressively defend them. Bear spray is not totally 100% effective because it is a 'deterrent' which simply means it only prevents an attack (especially against a predatory bear attack.) In that case you would need to fight for your life. But bear spray does work and is one of the best defensive methods available which you can use to protect yourself during a bear encounter. Don't worry bud. Follow the safety rules, hike with someone, and have fun. The chance of getting attacked is very slim.

Strawberry Cupcakes @ Some people also carry firearms to protect themselves against bears. But I would not recommend that at all unless you are an extremely good shot. Bears and cougars can charge at least 35mph and if you can't get a shot off in time you are in trouble. There are also legality rules behind carrying firearms. Many state parks and national parks prohibit firearms unless you have a CHL and a lot of states do not have carry permit reciprocity. Nearly all of them will not even let you fire a shot in a life or death situation. If I go to those areas I usually just take bear spray. But you really need to find out what the regulations are before you go if you plan on carrying a 🔫 or off to jail you will be a goin'. I carry because I have an oregon CHL and usually do open carry on the trail in case I need to access my firearm quickly. For grizzly bears I would go with a 44 magnum or .357 magnum revolver. I carry a 9mm loaded with CCI shotshells to protect myself against rattlesnakes. For black bear I carry full metal jacket loads 9+1 and a spare 9 round magazine.

      Carry a Glock 20.

milehighac @ Glock 20 is a great pistol if you can get in a .45 caliber. But I wouldn't carry anything less than that or a .357 magnum for a grizzly bear.

The business cards actually don't have my UA-cam channel on them because I only started doing UA-cam in June. My business cards are mainly for my website www.hikeoregon.net
Unfortunately I still have hundreds of business cards left, so I can't justify getting new ones made yet that have the UA-cam and everything else new on them :(

    Hey,
If stinging insects are a problem for you, maybe take a couple of these instead of the ammonia spray bottle: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008SIEL1U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
One ampule maybe weighs a gram.
Maybe carry a few Benadryl too.
