I'm managing to get 9mpg from my DAF XF 460bhp with a Paccar engine. Very impressed. Big power is overrated because the time you save rushing around like a mad man, you will then spend even more time queuing for diesel. I keep telling new owner drivers that it's not about how much you can charge the client but instead it's about how much you get to keep. No point earning more if you're gonna burn it racing around.
I believe you are absolutely correct about your mpg being most important and fuel prices are only ever going to go one way which is up.for us the other side of the pond to you guys here in the uk we have had to pay 3 to 4 times as much for our fuel for many years currently approximately 9 US dollars per gallon so we’ve had to be careful with our fuel usage for quite some time trucks by law have to be speed limited to 56mph for any truck newer than by memory 1988 and are next to none of that age still operating. But a lot of operators are choosing to limit trucks down to 50 mph for further fuel benefits. Also I have noticed in European trucks our length laws are very strict but it also helps with fuel consumption massively to close the gap between the cab and the box trailer as much as possible and match the fairing to the correct height and width of the trailers .also solid cat walks behind the cab stoping that disturbed air flow pulling air down onto the front of the trailer. Some operators also chose to run side skirts on there trailers which also helps. Mercedes have also gone for camera mirrors all for fuel saving reducing front end drag and less stuck out to be damaged. The jury is still out on those some people like them some don’t .over time we found the most important thing’s for us to achieve good fuel mileage has been keeping the trailer nice and close to the truck good truck maintenance and axel alignment ‘a tri axel trailer with 10 tonnes inside and bad alignment will tow harder than one that has been laserlighned with 20 tonnes inside’ also adding extra cost in tyre wear. Company’s have also put in bonus incentives to the drivers as what ever you spend on a truck can all be undone by the driver. It’s not so easy these days to over Rev engines due to 95% of all new truck sales having automated transmissions but still bad driving styles have an effect such as accelerating towards red traffic lights traffic hold ups and breaking at the the last minute or accelerating over the crest of a hill only to be braking again to hold the truck back as it goes down the other side all this also has big effects on fuel consumption and what’s left over in the bank at the end of the week.
The video at 5.36 isn't a Volvo truck. It is an international truck I think. I have had 6 or seven Volvo trucks ranging from 2014 to 2020 models years and never had a problem with the mirrors.
What r u talking about ? I have 2020 vnl 860 and i never had issues with blind spot mirrors rattling, even my previous 2017 volvo didnt have that problem ???????
Enjoyed the video, being a Volvo Man. We run the 400bhp high torque engines, as you said, you won't win any race's, but fuel efficiency is outstanding. Interior quality has dropped off slightly, but still a great truck.
Even if you have more horsepower and torque, you can still drive for fuel economy. I would think that the truck with more torque would not work as hard going up hills and would be able to handle heavier loads too.

Looking at the nose mirror when the truck is traveling on the highway I see the reflection is stable, and that is in this video. I've never actually driven that model truck. So I'm a bit confused about the rattle complaint.
I’m driving one of this with I-shift and it runs great, uphills downhills, it’s light I mean the maneuvers and turns like a 4-wheeler and view. I like everything in it except Electric warning -- I have been driving it with “Check engine” warning. Mechanics told me that it’s because I turned the Beeping signal about a car ahead of me and lane departure/crossing signals off.
The D13 turbo compound can be paired with rear ratios 2.05, 2.16, 2.26.. and it will pull amazing on to he hills because it can utilize it's top 3 gears at highway speed, your taking advantage of gearing in the transmission rather than horse power and torque in the engine.
Sensors go out to often. Every 2 months a different senor went out. Can't believe how terrible the headlights are, they either blind people or adjustments are so low you can't see at night. Definitely a great ride and because of you I understand why it pulls slow uphill loaded. Can't beat the comfort and smooth ride. On the 2020 I like the 2018 headlights 100 times better. Pull's uphill loaded light is great. I have never stayed out of the shop longer than 2 months, don't see how they stay in buissnes.
I have an international with 264 gears and 430 horses all I have to say it's downright dangerous climbing grades at 35 and 40 mile an hour...... And I don't know about feeling economy at least in my case the trucks at about 1700 RPM killing itself to get up the hill cuz there's no torque multiplication due to the high rear ratio.....
I love to here this smart information from a seasoned, veteran professional. So many UTubers are obsessed with pre def square nose trucks. Highest HP, torque number's possible. So inefficient. They have a 1980s mindset in a 21st century world. That's all they know how to work on. It's bad business all the way around. Tim Gentry is a good example.
great info. just one question how to I say thank you when someone give me the okay to pass and merge to the right. I don't see any button to flash all the lights for hazard thank you please thank you
The air dampeners on my Volvo used to whistle extremely loudly. I literally broke them off so that I could think in the cab of my truck. I hate them so much.
Hey Brian, thank you for showing us the fleet. This time , i do not agrea. Volvo's are good pullers, but in manual. 2 thinks i hate in the Volvo. Mirrors! The glass is oké, but i hate the box behind it. You can park a truck behind it. Than full... See the nummers at ideling. 3 liter p hour. Agains 1.3 liter p hour for same kind of engine for Scania
65mph idk 🤷♂️ is kind of slow . 5 miles difference between 65-70mph Make a lot difference on driver pocket . Let’s do math : 5 miles/hour x 10 hours driving = 50 miles a day so 50 miles day x 30 days = 1500 miles a month now 1500 x $0.70 = $1050 monthly and I work less hours . So you are telling me cuz company want to save money I have to loose around $1000 dollars a Month dude that’s my house’s mortgage …. Anyway good videos that a awesome truck 👍
@Thomas B I have a contract 100% drop and Hook . Probably I’m talking like that for my own condition . But just do math doing 1000 miles at 65 or 70 you drive less at a day not much difference but at month it’s is cuz you save 1 hour per day in your logs . 👍 imagine at year
They really need to fix the mirrors. Good for the first 6 months, then they vibrate so badly it's tough to see to the end of the trailer. Also the factory Volvo suspension isn't great when hauling super b tankers.
Two things that unnerve me about Volvos is the plastic valve cover warps and leaks and the cheap spotwelded steel coachwork vs quiet strong repairable corrosion resistant aluminum. ...and please, Volvo, how about crank windows?
I graduated CDL school recently and am going with Werner first for some experience. They have the T680, Cascadia and the International. They do have the Peterbuilt 579 too. Which one is less likely to break down?
Thera are million factors we have to consider before answering your question. From - how you run it, to how the previous driver before run it, to what is the years on the trucks and mileages etc
The one that is not abused will break down the less.....I've had Peterbilt that only needed oil changes and I've had Volvos that only needed oil changed.
Hey Brian! Just looking for some answers. Just got a 2022 Volvo that we are leasing from Penske. It has one….. single arm rest in the thing. One right side arm rest on the drivers seat. I’ve driven internationals and freightliners. This Volvo is the most uncomfortable truck I have ever driven. Why would this truck come with no left side arm rest? Any clue?
I have a 2015 vnl 780 and it’s loaded with everything and came with big leather seats and 2 arm rest, I don’t think Pensk trucks will be offering much options.
Direct drive - the driveshaft spins at the same rpm as the engine. Overdrive- the driveshaft spins faster than the engine. (Lower engine rpm when at the same road speed (mph, etc) as a direct drive.
Hi Brain, I'm Vismar from Bolivia, Im driving a Volvo fh13 2013 460 hp and is the best in my opinion, I drove too Volvo 1980, Volvo 1985 and Volvo 1995, these last 3 were from my father... So, the Volvo is... A Volvo..
Can someone please show one in a different color . If Iam pushing 2500m + that's the truck . Great team truck space . I lv the standing area behind the cab the best in trucking.
Was just told today that I'm getting a new volvo to replace my 2018 POS international... If rather keep my pos. I've driven several of the volvos my company has when my truck was in for service... It's just depression on wheels. It has zero soul. It doesn't help they haven't updated the interior, nor more importantly the cockpit and dash in 5 years. Oh but they love to tell you about the fucking cup holders that you can move...

Why would you have ordered one with less torque?
Fuel mileage, smoother driving, quieter, or engine longevity?
Fuel is the biggest over head on a truck. Brandon really hurt the trucking business. Obama drove up the taxes if you don't own the truck
