  • Generally it's recommended to wait to start yoga until at least six weeks after birth, but this sequence is carefully structured to be safe and healing for birth parents from day one. Gentle moves help to lengthen tight muscles and bring awareness to tired core muscles so they can heal effectively, ending with a restorative pose to ease any lower back and pelvic discomfort and help pelvic ligaments regain their tone. Many midwives recommend staying in bed for at least a week after giving birth, so this entire sequence is done lying down- it can even be done right in your bed with your little one beside you! Because it's so gentle this is also a great yoga sequence to practice after surgery or during illness- just clear it with your doctor first.
Rachel Brooker developed and led this sequence with inspiration from Yoga for Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond, by Francoise Barbira Freedman. It was filmed by Shaena Mallett in Sommer Sobin's yoga space in North Carolina. Thanks, Sommer and Shaena! Visit Sommer’s gorgeous online studio at thousandpetalsyoga.com.

Just what I needed! I am almost 4 weeks postpartum and wanted a little bit of something that resembled yoga! Oh how I’ve missed it ❤️

Dang that felt so good! I've been going crazy not being able to workout, and I'm only 2 weeks postpartum. So I'm so happy I found this and was able to move by body a little and stretch it out. Not only did it make my body feel good, but my mind too. I haven't been able to get much rest and I've been feeling very unhappy and stressed out, but this really made me feel relaxed and how I used to feel when I was able to exercise. Thanks so much for this! I look forward to doing this many more times during my recovery!❤

Wow, I am so touched! I am so happy to be part of you getting a chance to exercise a little bit in these incredibly challenging early weeks. I can totally totally relate. Thanks so much for taking the time to write, and I wish you all the very best and lots of healthy movement to come!

Just discovered this! Absolutely love that it can be done in bed. Thanks for creating it.

Thank you! I have that same book, and it was lovely having you guide me through these exercises instead of having the book lie next to me! I am 10 days postpartum and it felt sooo good to stretch and get in touch with my body again!
