Fair play mate, I’m also 40, took up BMX a little over two years back. Don’t think the youngsters understand how difficult it is to learn when your brain has already developed to make it always consider risk!
Hey Christian, thanks for the comment ! I've had to move north for the winter so I haven't been riding. The temperature here today is -23C and yesterday it was -38C A guy who I rode with at this indoor park is currently in Costa Rica, I believe. His instagram is rojaslifestyle .
@@C.V.C.494 Yeah, that's cold !! This video was posted in 2018 and I do have quite a few videos of my progress up until I had some unfortunate incidents and COVID haha.
Last time I rode a BMX (or any bicycle) was my 87 GT Performer....back in about 1991 or 92 I'd say. This summer in 2019 I bought a GT Conway Team Signature. I'm 45. Wish I hadn't let all those years pass without riding. My friends all have mountain bikes etc etc. I decided to stay with BMX since it's all I ever rode. I love going to skate parks. I do OK.
If you've aced dropping in...and you're easily doing foot plants over the ramp...you're there. Increase speed slightly and get that back tire up and over. But I will say...you are 100% CORRECT about standing next to a 6' spine and thinking NO WAY. Watching it on UA-cam makes it seem somewhat easy and like you could just go do it. Once you get to the park and look at the ramps...it's all different.
If you're thinking about just go down to the local bike shop and talk with them. They usually offer payments and support if you can't afford it but they will also help you find exactly what you need for what kind of riding you want to do
@@JoelArseneaultUA-cam Yeah double coping spines are the most dangerous ones. If you get a hang up you will fall over your handlebars. I remember back in 2010 BMX Masters in Cologne, Germany. The spine there was a monster. I wouldn't jump it, even today :D
repetition and keeping the momentum flowing , relax in mid air changing body alignment land with spine straight let the wheels do the work. easy said than done flow with it
Thanks. Life has once again got in the way of me doing much biking, but I did manage to make a LOT of progress from this point on. I managed to do a few tricks that I never imagined doing including barspins and backflips (to resi)
I went back to riding after 15 years at well, also at age 40. Took a nasty crash and it's been two months during which my left knee has refused to behave properly, therapy sucks. Please use all your protections guys. I can't do shit nowadays lol.
I’ve been getting the bug too. Many years ago I was a nationally ranked racer - now I’m old and looking to ride street and parks. Can anyone recommend a bike with a 20” top tube and on the lighter side ? Thanks.
joel arseneault i appreciate it that. Yes I’m looking at a complete bike. Was considering cult but I’ll check out Sunday too. I’m the same height as you and I remember years ago when I got an S&M with a .5 “ longer top tube it made a drastic change for the worse . Thanks again ✌️
joel arseneault absolutely, .. some people can make adjustments rather quickly but I was never that person. If I put new grips on my bike I’d be messed up for a while in races.
@@thomiccor Yes, the volume is quite frustratingly low. Sorry about that. I normally don't do voice over and I used the built in mic in my laptop to do the voice over recording. I'm guessing that I wasn't careful about adjusting volume levels because I hate the sound of my voice and didn't listen to it as much as I should have. Cheers
What I love about BMX is that people will verbally lead you into trying something or encourage by example like the green t-shirt guy did. However, what I don't like that everyone is watching your lame attempts to get it right! The older you are, the more of a problem this is, and it's self-defeating because it just saps your confidence on top of the inherent fear factor you probably have as a returning rider. Actually, just going back to that other guy, he really does deserve credit for the way he told you to relax and then turned his bike in a kind-of faux 'I'm not watching you, go ahead' manner... and then you got it right('ish).
Yeah... it is very intimidating for sure, and it is easy to get in your head and start thinking about what others are thinking of you... I have been on both sides of this being helped / watched and watching / wanting to help... Sometimes, good riders can be a little over enthusiastic about cheering someone on, and just make it more intimidating, but it comes from a good place. I'm not a terribly social person, so just being around people, for me, is uncomfortable. having them watch me fail is even wore ! haha.
Thanks !! They are not all saves tho, haha. I'm currently recovering from a concussion. Alley Oop 180 barspin gone wrong and I was getting lazy. No video of it unfortunately. Looped out on the landing and hit the back of my head.
There's no better time than now... Get a bike, get out there and ride. It's a great idea to learn the basic fundamentals before trying to learn tricks ... A great way to hurt yourself and / or traumatize yourself is to get on a bike and just start trying tricks. You want to feel comfortable and confident on a bike... and even comfortable falling a little. Try doing things that will develop your balance, wear pads and a helmet so that falling doesn't suck so much and remember to keep pushing yourself, but ride within your limits.
I've learned to accept failure mid-air and concentrate on ME landing and forget the bike. I'm 45 so I need to make sure I walk away. I can buy a new bike in a minute nowadays. As a kid I always tried to save the bike because I couldn't afford parts and there was no internet to just order them and ship to door.

Thank you ! That was a few years ago ... a lot has happened since then, haha. It would take a few days riding before I would be able to do that again.
This is so inspiring I've just started to bmx and I am 40, great video 👍👍
Awesome. I've still never have done it.

I can do xups and one hand seat grabs over spines. I almost died of fear that day I learned how to jump spines. But after learning it I loved spines.
