This Berdych was on fire in 2012. It took Nadal a monumental effort and having to play possibly the best HC match of his life to beat him in the QF of the AO that year.

Yep! Even though it was a 4-setter, it was one of the best quality matches I'd ever seen.

Berdych was firing BOMBS at that match .

i'm amazed how powerful berdych's shots are and he never got a GS. If his mentality was a little better, he would have all the conditions to do this on a fast courts. I'm sure if he played with a clear head and grabbed a final firing his insane forehand and backhand shots against Nadal or Djokobic he would win. No one hits the ball as hard as he does.

in the current era he would probably win a slam

@@KunnuITF yup i think i agree. He emerged on the circuit at the 2004 Athens Olympics against Federer. In other words, he had his affirmation phase in that punk era of 2004-2010... precisely the strongest era in the history of tennis, when Federer was at his peak before mononucleosis and Nadal too, in addition to Djokovic appearing in 2007, Nalbandian in god mode in madrid paris and masters cup, Blake, Gonzo, Davydenko on fire on fast courts, often defeating Nadal and Djokovic... it was a very complicated era, poor Berdych. Interestingly, his best tournament (and his only Masters 1000) was in 2005 when he was just a promise with nothing to lose. He didn't have a lack of confidence problem at that point. Then, with time and defeats, he developed a mental block against the big3. He beat everyone below him in rank, but always lost the same way against the 3 above him. If it were today he would have an easier life, without a doubt, practically only Djokovic would be an obstacle for Berdych.

@@fejuncorstrongest era is 2008-2014. You can extend that to 2007-2016 but that's about it. And this Berdych wouldn't beat Alcaraz nor today's Djokovic, so he would probably not win a slam.

Federer played a lot like this under Anacone. I thought he was being too aggressive at times and didn’t manage matches.

Federer already lacked power on the forehand side here. 2011 was his last killer forehand year

Tom was on fire here but fed was unusually sloppy ..an easy put away to go up 3-0 in the first set and he played the really important points poorly ..checked out mentally a bit but great match from Thomas for sure

This one has always been odd to me. Fed really should be winning matches like this, especially considering the form he was in. Just won Cincinatti and actually bageled Djokovic in the final there. Also had a very convincing 4R showing. Berdych is a good player tho ofc
