    Thanks for your honesty and integrity. How on the earth does a 13 year old, sweet, innocent, delightful child dream up a song like this. The music, the lyrics, her delivery and her voice drilled straight into my heart. Maybe she is not so unique, maybe it is us so called adults who sometimes forget that young people including those even younger than Grace, feel deep emotions as much as anyone else. Grace has the gift and the intelligence to be able to express those feelings better than anyone else I have ever heard. Maybe it is too early to call Grace a genius but she is certainly different than anyone or anything we have encounterred before.

      Hi, Les. I think that kids feel emotions more strongly than adults, because they haven't been repressed yet.

    • @lescox8667
      @lescox8667 6 років тому +9

      Yes lek844, i agree, they also may not fully understand why they feel as they do and may not always be able to express themselves so well. I have worked with autistic kids and know they feel sometimes much deeper than grown ups do. We should also be prepared to listen to young people, they are the future and have more right even than we have to say what world they want & what they expect from us..

      Yes that honesty can devastate you. Once I was dressed as a Genie from the Lamp for a big childrens Christmas party, a little girl sat beside me on the floor, I had already chatted to her Mum and knew that her Dad had been killed in Afghanistan. The child asked me for three wishes, she then said her first wish was that her Daddy would come home. If someone knows how the hell you reply to that I would love to know, I quickly asked her what her 2nd wish was, which was a 4 foot tall teddy bear, her mum nodded to me. so I said I would speak to Santa.. An example of how a 6 year old can wipe you out.

    • @MarkLalondeIndieFilmmaker
      @MarkLalondeIndieFilmmaker 6 років тому +5

      Wow, les, I would have been a blubbering mess if a child had asked that of me expecting that I might be able to actually fulfill her wish. Wow.
      I've said it before about this song, but it's Grace's age that really pushes it's emotional impact over the top, because it touches adults in that place in our hearts that's hard-wired to want to protect children. When she pleads; "Darkness keeps chasing me and my legs are getting tired of running, no, no, no, no, please don't let it get to me..." it just kills me.

      Yes Mark, some of the most intense words I have ever seen and from the mind of a sweet, innocent young teenager. Genius is not too strong a word in this girls case.

    I remember reading a pyschological study of people's appreciation of popular songs vs. classical music. The conclusion was that the appreciation of classical music tended to increase after each hearing, but the appreciation of popular songs tended to peak at the third hearing and decline rapidly thereafter. This tells me that Grace's music is more like art music than something meant for mindless mass consumption. Listening to a song from Grace does not get old.

      lek844 I've said this before and people think I'm joking, but I really do forget most pop rubbish as soon as I've heard it. This is the difference between ear candy and real music.

      Hi Jerry. Many people hearing Grace for the first time say, "It's different somehow." I guess it's their loss of words to describe something that is supposed to be "popular music," yet, in some indefinable way, is more than that.

      lek844. This explains so much to me! This has been my personal experience with Grace music. It just gets better each time I listen. It even moved me to go buy the CD. I have not bought a CD since the 90"s and the first time I've used the CD player in my car.

I've been bed-ridden for about twelve years now. The internet is my only connection to the rest of the world. So thank you for making my life better. God bless you.

      Greg Cadman - same with me - in fact i nearly veered off road as I closed my eyes got so aborbed. I then stopped multiple further times in the next hour as I felt compelled to listen again. To explore and separate every sad and uplifting event and emotion through my 50 years of life. Never, has a song had such an effect on me.

    Wow wow wow! Can she be any more amazing!!! I have never in my life been touched so deeply by a single song. Never mind that she's a 13 year old girl!!! To be honest when she starts to sing I forget that she's so young in fact I forget everything and focus on the lyrics and the delivery because her voice has this cry/tear in it that triggers you but at the same time is soulful and soothing like a mothers warm embrace. I really don't know how else to explain it, it's like she taps into an emotional nerve and all I can do is hang on for the ride. "It's Crazy!!" What is it about Grace that just tears at your heart strings? How can someone so young write something so relatable and tap into this kind of deep emotion? I just hope she continues to keep writing, singing and blowing our minds =D
    Michikent - Your reaction was very sincere. Thank you for taking a moment to reflect and share with us.

    Happy belated Birthday! You held up a lot better than I did the first time I heard DKCM. I truly believe in my heart Grace was sent to us at the perfect time. With so much hate going around this world, a little breath of fresh air is what our souls have been craving and needing. Call me crazy but I believe she is God’s small gift to us. Why else is she able to reach us so deeply?

    I'm surprised Radio hasn't picked it up yet and at some point it's going to get played and there is no doubt it's going to have a impact on everybody. Grace is more than just a songwriter she is the real deal that every once in a good while a artist comes around and becomes the new star on the horizon & This new star Grace Vanderwaal has become the new voice the whole world is going to turn to because this is a artist that's not backing down how she truly feels and this song speaks not just for her but what everyone else is going through a very dark period in their lives they been trying to get pass for sometime. Well Grace Vanderwaal is the new voice of the voiceless and there no doubt she'll be writing songs that will impact millions around the Globe.

    I spent 4 years in MIchigan (at Michigan State University) when I did my post-graduate work to get my Ph.D. in chemistry. But I definitely remember the grey winters. When I lived there (in the early 70's) I was told that the sun went behind a cloud in September and did not reappear until the following May. From my experience, that was all too true. I totally understand why you moved to Florida. I did not because I did not want to be the youngest adult in the state (at the time I was in my late 20's. LOL)

    I feel like she touches on things that we, as adults, tell ourselves we can't or shouldn't react to or feel. Her music allows us to feel those things, allows us to react in ways we haven't allowed ourselves since we were children. It allows us to remember how it felt at that age, the world seemed so overwhelming and so big, and everything we felt was so big because what we felt was so new to our young selves. Thanks, Kent. And thanks, Grace.

    I am like you. I live on the east coast but grew up in California. Although I love the beautiful snow, I’ve just gone through the toughest winter ever because of the dark gloomy days. I need to see the sun and the older I get, the harder it is to hold on. In my 63 years of life, I too have been through so many difficult times, especially this past year. I think Grace is incredible. It amazes me that she writes so many songs that all ages can relate to. I also live her raspy, unusual voice.

    What I like most about Grace’s songs is the fact that they feel as though she wrote them for each person that is listening. I love to read comments from people saying her songs impacted them so deeply or that they relate so much to someone. Most songs written today seem so very shallow and as an older person, I find most music subjects to be somewhat trivial. Grace has heart and thought which takes her beyond how “Gorgeous” I guy might be to how the world should best interact together. Many people relate to Darkness keeps chasing me as to be about depression, and it soothes they’re soul. For me, it is about remaining good in a dark world. Not in a religious way really, just in general. Even when I’m online reading comments, sometimes I just want to just unload on some idiot, I ask myself, “what would Grace do?” My boys are all grown up now, but there is something magical about a child’s innocence, and when you couple that with Graces intelligent and heart, you get something very special. I hope she is able to hold on to it forever. It is kind of like Neverland, I remember when I thought like her, I just don’t know how to get back there.

    Wow, I'm subscriber number 500. I can't come up with adequate superlatives to describe Grace's music, I've been following her since AGT, and she is such a bright spot in my life. I can't say that I have ever before been there at the beginning of what will be a brilliant career in music and looked so forward to what will come next. I go back to her AGT videos at least twice a month, and still tear up every time that I watch this incredible girl with the raspy voice, engaging songs and charming personality.
    As for Just The Beginning, it is brilliant in conception and performance. In my 66 years I have never come across such an intense music talent who is so young or so beyond their years in creativity. Personally, Just The Beginning takes me back to The Moody Blues, a British rock band who put out several incredible albums in the late 60s to early 70s. I always felt that they were in a category of their own for creating beautiful music that was original. Darkness Keeps Chasing Me, in particular, gives me that vibe I felt all those years ago.
    Kent, keep listening to Grace, there is so much more to experience.

    we already know what grace is capable of...but this...it just speaks to every single one of us in a way or another...nd the way she sings it...i think its what really makes this song get into our hearts nd straight to our souls...its a masterpiece on its whole...nd that includes grace singing it...heared some (rare) covers of it...first of all its very hard to sing this one, nd secondly even ppl covered it had really good voices, it just didnt sounded the same...wasnt so full of sense...id say Grace gives life to ant lyrics she sings...she could sing a song just saying "potaroes" all along it...nd i can bet u it would touch us straight in the heart...coz she has that magic. well as for ur reaction...as allways, togetter with Petra's was the most honest nd sinccere i seen...very truthfull nd was really good. thanks for that 😊

    Thanks for sharing your story. I think now, words are unnecessary. You've opened the Pandora's box and you can see the first blinding rays into DKCM. It's impossible to listen the song, your reaction or Petra's without getting excited. Even if you don't understand the language, the song is deep in the melody, in the intensity in Grace's voice, and you can feel something special is transmitted with this song. I didn't want you to react to it yet because each new listening increases the power of huge art it contains, but deep down I'm glad. Now if you want, you still have a lot of videos to continue feeling Grace. A must listening (as you've felt with all bombing we make on requests) are "Miss You", "The Good Just Gets Better" and also the dark and beautiful "12 Stars". We're waiting for your reactions 🙂👍

    I remember Grace's golden buzzer audition, and when asked what the song would be about, she answered, "Its about me". I think all of Grace's songs are a little about her, and a lot about trying to reach out to those who listen in ways only they can interpret. I really think Grace does want to be different, and she isn't sure she can do it, much less do it alone. But she is different, there hasn't been a singer as different from the mainstream since Janis Joplin. Janis changed music forever, and so will Grace. Janis - ua-cam.com/video/nKnTjYu4c44/v-deo.html

    The song does affect many people because we have all been there or are there. But, the song ends in an up note. The up note represents hope, happiness, joy and relief of the pain. No matter what is happening Now, look forward for peace at the end.... not despair or nothingness. All written by a 13yo.

    Love this song ... as a 70-yr old, I’m overwhelmed by all the new talent that just keeps coming; for something completely different, there’s BabyMetal out of Japan who have combined Idol Pop with heavy metal, creating a new metal genre, “Kawai Metal (“cute metal”); the girls have been together since grade school, their first gig at a Yokohama warehouse in 2010; they ended their 2016 world tour at Tokyo Dome (55,000 seat capacity), selling out the venue two nights in a row ... this is from a 2014 gig: ua-cam.com/video/VANhYO1TLno/v-deo.html

    I read a comment on an earlier review that for Grace, the song was about trying not to get into the pitfallsl of chaning her music and herself to fit a pop culture in order to sell her music to more people, and trying to stay true to herself and not get caught up the fame of it all, and of other musicians who have had that happen to them and try to learn from that and steer clear of it.

      Val- Where did you read that? Very uncommon for Grace to give such a detailed explanation. Generally speaking she leaves the bulk of interpretation up to the individual listener. So I am very interested to know where you read those comments. ✌

      She does say the songs she writes are from her experiences. She has told us that Moonlight was about dealing with depression, and initially it was thought to be about a friend of hers, but later I got to understand from other things she has said it is more personal than that. I pray she can take in the love from her well deserved fans, who love her for who she IS not just what she does for us using her talents. I hope she can take in that we are here for her, come what may.

      She wants to make sure she doesn't sell her music to more people? LOL! I think Grace is smarter than to say something that inane! SHE is what drives what is popular- not the other way around. Why should she feel the need to "change" her music- I think her managers, as well as Simon Cowell, should know better-her individuality is her golden egg. I don't know why they would ever want to kill that. Her becoming successful should not be anything to be ashamed or afraid of. That simply sounds like a bunch of anti-establishment pablum.

    • @chrislatham711
      @chrislatham711 6 років тому +5

      The explanation wasn't from Grace herself (as Brent said, she rarely gives detailed explanations), but was inferred by some clever fan (I don't know who, because the original poster was copied by someone who was then copied by someone else) from comments she's made about various things over the past year. It seems to have been derived largely from the song referencing another person (the you in "I want to call you, but if I hear your voice I just might cry"), who is then, during the bridge, given a detail -- the 'blowing smoke in your ripped jeans'. The fan concluded that this reference was to Miley Cyrus, who in some video was seen smoking pot (blowing smoke) while wearing designer ripped jeans. And we all know that Miley went from a seeming happy child on Hannah Montana, which Grace adored growing up, to a wrecked pop star struggling to get her life recentered. So the idea that Grace would see the desire for 'fame and fortune' of the music industry as a type of darkness chasing her, and that she has temptations for those things (who among us would not?), temptations that could lead her to wreck her life as it wrecked Miley, seems an easy interpretation of these lyrics. I don't know if it's a correct interpretation, because only Grace knows what's on her mind when she writes these things -- and she seems pretty adept at keeping secrets when she wants to. But one of the beauties of Grace's writing, seen here on full display in DKCM, is the vagueness of her lyrics, such that darkness can become a metaphor for an enemy taking different forms to different listeners: depression, the grim reaper of suicide, a literal darkness of overcast days as Kent sees it, or even a music industry that chews up people and spits them out. That Grace would be aware of the pitfalls of fame seems without question. That she would call out to others (i.e. family and friends) to 'please don't, please don't let it get to me' also seems very Grace-ish. But who knows? Well, Grace does.

    It was more apparent on your Angelica Hale Reactions, but on some of these too the distortion of the audio, by incorrect graphic equaliser settings (or whatever you're using) spoils the track.
