Martlet offers a highly accurate one shot, one kill option, from small arms ranges (400m) out to 8km, where it could supplement warship’s heavy weaponry. Instead of chasing tiny, highly agile targets and trying to line up a gun run, while avoiding hitting the friendly warship and probably taking incoming fire from the swarm, a Martlet equipped helo can sit at a safe stand off distance, sending deadly accurate, laser guided rockets against them. A Wildcat could safely engage and destroy twenty targets in less time than a dedicated gunship could currently engage just one. It’s also a lorry load cheaper than the current generation of guided missiles, much smaller and considerably lighter. Wildcat has a new wing mount which can carry up to twenty of them, or a combination of other weapons including the new Sea Venom light anti-ship missile.
This is just one of the reasons the new Type 31 would wreck any attempts at symmetric or asymmetric warfare. Considered a poorly armed "economy" frigate, its armament is thus: 1 Bofors 57mm 3P 2 Bofors 40mm 3Ps Strike length mk41s VLS cassette, taking TLAM, Naval Strike Missile and quad packed Seaceptor short to medium range air defense missiles. 1 Wildcat with everything it can carry All tied into the AESA fire control radar via an integrated defense system. Those Bofors are _savage,_ programmable 3P ammo point, delay or timed airburst allows it to easily destroy asymmetric threats on sea and air and engage and destroy ships at 10 miles. Wildcat can feed targeting data into the defense system for cueing NSM.
Finally our country is waking up to see that the Royal Navy has been run down for far too long. The building of more powerful surface fleet is a priority that the new government must accelerate .
There is a defense review underway, by the new government. No official announcements as yet, but rumors say the proposed Tempest aircraft will be cancelled, as will the replacement helicopter for the, now, very old Puma, and a new anti drone system currently under development is at threat. For the last 80 years defense reviews result only in cuts. Do not be suprised if further cuts to the RN are announced, the 2 LPD’s have to be at risk.
@@paulhill1665Hi there not sure about the other stuff but I get updates the the uk defence journal and it appears to be still progressing ? I think it could be a politically bad move to cancel tempest ? That said they could expand those involved with a move to closer defence ties to Europe and the uncertainty about NATO and US involvement? I am led to believe the US will not sell their 6th gen fighter ?
We’ve got a labour government and they have always cut the defence budget, wouldn’t surprise me if starmer cut the military down for a smoother hand over to the A`holes slowly taking over already.
Labour will cut any spending and the next Government being either Labour or Reform or Tories they will also cut any spending. Its how they think in the UK
This seems like Thales UK trying to rebrand their Blowpipe missile from the 70s with a new warhead as a new missile. Why can't companies just make something new these days? They've even retained the stupid sliding fin arrangement, even though that was only a benefit as a MANPADS to make the launch tube easier to carry.

I can see the Navy using this for anti speed-boat swarm and anti pirate use!
Current missiles were just to expensive to use.
