  • After discovering some small damage to one of our irons we headed down to Dyson Bros Racing in Geelong to carry out some rotary plate lapping.

Nice video! Just one remark: it's called surface grinding and not lapping. Lapping is when you put an abrasive compound between your part and a tool with the required surface to 'lap' it into shape :)

    That's a surface grinder.

David Rutherford certainly is ! Nice old quality one too it was. Amazing how long quality machinery lasts for.

Lapping machine is totally different in operation

Yep lapping is polishing with abrasive diamond compound either on a rotating table, flat iron plate or between 2 mating surfaces.
I used to nod off on the surface grinder as an apprentice. The sound and motion is hypnotic.

Great video as per usual. I have been in the auto trade my entire life, I have never seen rotaries explained so well.

Don't use an air filter because: drag racing... Not sure I agree with that, especially at the club/amateur level.

    That’s surface grinding not lapping

So many have commented that this is surface grinding and not lapping. And they are correct, if it was lapped it would be on a large plate with some form of abrasive like grinding paste and the whole plate would be rubbed on it in a figure 8 motion and then my friend you have a lapped plate

All this work to keep it alive until Project Redline 3.0 with the billet JB Weld RENEE-SIS motor. 😁

That line is called Step Wear. It’s when the compression is so high, it pushes the side seal into the housing and digs into it.

Seems to be a lot of lappers in the chat... thank goodness we have them to set us straight !

That is NOT a lapping machine, it's a horizontal grinder. It can be used to get deep damage out of the housing, before the lapping machine. I am surprised a RotorHead does not know that!

Bet that coolant smelt delightful, looks like it hadn’t been replaced for a while. Not really worth the trouble though if they aren’t using it every day.

Old video I know, but do you have any input on total removal of material before you compromise the nitride layer? I have read the nitride can be as deep as 0.002", but then have also read that the hardest layer of the nitride is only 0.0002" deep meaning any real removal of material would compromise the nitride and you'd have to re-nitride. Any insight to that? I have a nice center iron and access to a surface grinder, but wondering if I'd need to re-nitride afterwards. Great video BTW. Thanks,

Ever tried metal spraying to build up these plates?

Look into blanchard grinding instead of surface grinding. It generally leaves a slightly coarser finish which may hold oil like cylinder cross hatching.

Do you have to get fd plates renitrated after machining them or can you run them straight off the machine. How deep is the factory nitrating. I had mine done by bocher motors in qld Ipswich. I hope you can run them without decreasing its factory life span.i heard that the laping takes all the hardness off the pate and will wear out quick.

  • @UltFrizz
    @UltFrizz 5 років тому +1

Could you hard chrome the plates? They would hardly wear then.

Here's an odd ball one for you buddy.. What about ceramic coating the parts?? I'm wondering if anyone in the rotory world has ever tried it?.

What's the RA value (average roughness) from OEM irons and after you have lapped them here? What roughness is borderline acceptable?

Sorry mate but thats not lapping. Thats surface grinding probably good for max 50,000kms.
Lapping uses diamond particles on a table while the machine spins and irons rest on the table. Lapping is more precise and provides a better finish and also more straight and true. Dont mix up the 2.
