I had kept an eye on the Freecad for years. I could design some parts but felt limited with the topological naming problem and took much more time. But I kept faith to the team with donations as I could. And this comes from someone who never paid for a CAD software. I wish I could help the team more but they seem to sped up the development. If you can donate the team even a cup of coffee. I am sure it fuels their passion for the freecad development further.
Finally import of external geometry as real geometry added! It was a dealbreaker for me, as there was no practical way to re-draw b-splines from another sketch before.
Being able to directly use projected geometry without having to copy it is a big deal to me. I get really frustrated that I can't directly use a projected line. Being able to import a face is also awesome. They are really putting some work in now and I love it.
Man I was already overwhelmed by FreeCAD 1.0, we barely have time to test out all new features and they are already working on 1.1. My favorite feature of 1.0 so far is the ability to add pad/extrude/revolve features to selected sketch curves, instead of the whole sketch. It's a game changer if you like to keep big master sketches.
Moving a group of geometries in Sketcher is precisely what I've been looking for for the past week. I've been trying to kludge it with Python or using the Move / Array Transform both of which are quite unsatisfying. Honestly, I'd love to see a "group" feature like Inkscape or other tools.
FreeCad is quickly becoming my favorite CAD program. I still find myself forced to use SolidWorks from time to time because I can't do something in FreeCad, but even still, it's my go to. I designed a bowl earlier for a small waterfall and FreeCad wouldn't allow me to shell the object out, SolidWorks did. Still a way to go but it's getting great.
Loving these changes. Now that the topology issue is greatly diminished (it can still be a problem though!) it seems that the floodgates have opened on new features that help drafters get work done quickly. Thanks for the rundown!
Freecad is getting much better by time. I need object line convertion should be much easier like in Solid Works. We should see bottom object's lines in new sketches without converting it.
The external geometry features brought from the Link Branch is a great improvement and something I quite missed when switching to v1 for future compatibility reasons. This is truly a game changer, especially since they implemented the offset on the imported geometries as well. Seems like there are less and less things for the Fusion "specialists" to complain about 😂
That is great, now if you could import external geometry and turn it into "standard" geometry that would be stupendous. My problem with external geometry most of the time is I have to draw on top of it constantly to re-create like 90% of it.
I'm glad that the import geometry tool now adds a sketch line. It was frustrating to select the geometry and then have to draw a line over the top. This will hopefully help when copy curces, etc.
Having to retrace imported geometry has been such a pain point for me, when the imported geometry is complicated and full of curves. I’ve also found it to be the most fragile part of my designs, if I have to update something earlier in the feature tree. I will be updating tonight.
External geometry defaulting as real geometry is a sketcher improvement in a class all on it's own. IMHO, it was one of the biggest FreeCAD fails that made me scratch my head and say "why?" when I first discovered I had to redraw geometry on top of external geometry. Ugh. This is such a big deal!
I will happily pay $50 a month for someone to work on the path bench for CNC machining, like, the CAM software side is really the biggest hold back now.
what's everyone's experience using a weekly build for a 3d design? reliable enough? I'm not talking a commercial product, just a model for a 3d print I'm doing for some electronics I made

Does that mean I can import an image and import external geometry and then turn that into construction geometry making it so much easier to copy a shape?
No, that won't work. It still needs actual lines and curves instead of groups of pixels that just happen to have similar colours. You *can* import a photo and trace it manually; the built-in image calibration tool ensures that you will be close to the actual dimensions of the part.
The two tools demonstrated are from the development builds that can be downloaded from the download section on the website. The standard import geometry is the projection on current versions, the icon has changed in the new version and additional functionality added. The intersection is the new tool that's been added for 1.1.
Very nice; but I would concentrate on getting the basics easier to use, Example the XYZ, I draw a sketch and want to move it , so I look at the XYZ arrows bottom left and think Ah yes its got to move along he X plane, but when I try to move it ,,,its the Z plane that the sketch has to move HUH? ( I know all the "reasoning " why but not the point ) Offset is still crap I just want to offset a line not draw an oval ,,,,,, and the big one When I click on a face to add a sketch ,,freecad does all this funky alignment, leaving the axis buried in the part and the alignments arse about face , I just want to click the face and draw the sketch AS I see it. Finally, this is for me only; drawing tubes though XYZ ( 3d space ) is still a right royal pain in the arse ,,,,,,, ON SAYING all of that, I remember what freecad started as and what it has become, and the enormous well-funded team freecad has ( not ,, ) So hats off and a BIG thank you to EVERYONE who has had input in any way shape or form to make freecad what it is today thank you
A glaring weakness is the inability to sketch in 3D. For example, to draw a line from a point in one sketch to another in an other sketch one must first establish a sketch plane and draft wire lines do not snap.
Sketcher is even version 1 difficult and unpleasant. It is not clear which lines you select, if you have added all the dimensions to the drawing and want to make a curved corner on some edge, all the dimensions are lost. Freecad is not a user-friendly program, it is good when you make a detail according to ready-made drawings, but it is not suitable for development or design. I would rate the program 2 on a 5-point scale, I have been using the program since version .18.
Freecad is improving exponentially. Kudos to the team!
The intersection on the plane is wonderful!!
These improvements are soooo needed and I've wanted this for so long! All of them increase the quality of life significantly.
So happy that we finally have the offset tool right there in sketcher! FreeCAD is a great tool that keeps getting better.
Freecad is getting really good

The good thing they add the intersection projection 😊
FreeCAD reminds me kiCAD, seemed dead at v5 but suddenly came v6, v7, v8... Hope FreeCAD got the same fast development now on.
Getting better & better
nice! I have always wanted the import geometry directly feature
Hats off to the devs. FreeCAD is going places!
external geometry as standard geometry is a very nice improvement! Will save a lot of repetitive work.
Brilliant!

Exciting times for the freecad world. 😊😊😊

OMG, these are so useful, I literally would have used two of them yesterday. Hell yes.

loving the new features!
This being the weekly build 1.1, my appetite is whetted to see the actual 1.1 release.
Loving these changes. Now that the topology issue is greatly diminished (it can still be a problem though!) it seems that the floodgates have opened on new features that help drafters get work done quickly. Thanks for the rundown!
This is definitely the right direction for the developers to improve the UI/UE. Features every user will use every day.
Freecad is getting much better by time. I need object line convertion should be much easier like in Solid Works. We should see bottom object's lines in new sketches without converting it.
Thank you, Darren, for making this lovely video about the new Sketcher features, which will be helpful and save time. :) /Paulo

Fantastic, exactly what I’ve been looking for! Thanks

Looks like that is exactly what this update facilitates!
Thanks for your didication and pointing out the new features.
My pleasure 😊👍
Thanks for sharing 👍
Finally you can select and drag multiple features! Yes!
I was fist pumping the air the minute I heard about that 😁😁
Hey thanks for all your tutorials, helped me so much and FreeCad 1.0 is amazing! Finally a really fun experience and great alternative.
Thank you so much, so glad that these tutorials can help out 👍👍👍
omg I was missing this projection geometry so much. I will download it today :D
Really nice features!
I'm glad that the import geometry tool now adds a sketch line. It was frustrating to select the geometry and then have to draw a line over the top. This will hopefully help when copy curces, etc.
It's going to save so much time, can't wait to see what else the Devs add.

Tell me about it! I have spent so much time doing exactly that. It's a breath of fresh air 😊
Thanks Darren👋👋
I would like to see the ability to toggle visability of axis cross while preserving snap. Fully defined sketch is the same color as y axis.
I love these features!
Woou! Now we have videos with audio in brazilian Portuguese! Obrigado!
That's news to me, youtube must of added something new. I have to go and check that out. Thank you for the heads up.
thank you
Хорошая новость! Давно уже жду, когда же сделают. Наличие этой функции очень облегчит работу.
Looks nice, have they gone away from the shapebinder stuff that was so anoying?
The shape binders are still present from part design.

I know Brad who set up Onsdel is the main guy for the CAM workbench and I know he is a big fan of extending it. Hope to see more in the future.
O áudio em Português do Brasil, ficou ótimo! Obrigado
I’m assuming you’re using a nightly build. Any clue when it might be released?
Yes I'm using the dev build, have no idea as of yet but I am keeping my eyes out for the announcements 😁😁
Looking forward to these! Thanks for the demo
what's everyone's experience using a weekly build for a 3d design? reliable enough? I'm not talking a commercial product, just a model for a 3d print I'm doing for some electronics I made
can't explain how much i tired to redrawing that geometry, this points should be available by default!
Salut Darren, tuto très intéressant mais personnellement, je préfère quand c'est toi qui parle 😊
Thank you so much,, I lost my voice a week ago and it's just coming back, it sounds a bit different on the video 😁😁

as of December 14th, there is no 1.1 version.
And so I don't see a Changelog on freecad website. What's going on?
It's the weekly builds that can be downloaded by following the links from the website.
Does that mean I can import an image and import external geometry and then turn that into construction geometry making it so much easier to copy a shape?
As long as the image is something like a a svg or vector based image rather than raster.
@MangoJellySolutions now you made me look up what different images are in Google lol. I just meant take a photo from camera and copy it
No, that won't work. It still needs actual lines and curves instead of groups of pixels that just happen to have similar colours. You *can* import a photo and trace it manually; the built-in image calibration tool ensures that you will be close to the actual dimensions of the part.
How to get "create external projection geometry" in sketches?

The intersection is the new tool that's been added for 1.1.
Essa atualização é recente?
Where did you find this version ?
It's the weekly dev build.
github
It's the weekly dev build, if you go to the freecad website, download there is instructions of how to find the weekly dev versions.
why the heck are there fillets after offsetting sharp corners?
That's just the default. You can toggle that off in the offset wizard.
That's toggleable in the offset tool, either intersection for sharp corners or arc for round ones.
You have different modes, I just used the defaults.
Sadly no parametric Offset in 1.0 so far. Hope that'll make it into 1.x and we don't have to wait for v2
So why is FreeCAD 1.0 the only version I can download?
Very nice; but I would concentrate on getting the basics easier to use, Example the XYZ, I draw a sketch and want to move it , so I look at the XYZ arrows bottom left and think Ah yes its got to move along he X plane, but when I try to move it ,,,its the Z plane that the sketch has to move HUH? The only thing I don't like in 1.1 is the smaller planes when you create a new sketch. Very difficult to select them now.
I notice this, I am wondering if there is anyway to make this bigger like the navigation cube settings.
Apparently it is work in progress, not meant to be the final aspect, they are revamping the planes.
Nice one... thank you... Old habits will be hard to break...with these new features.
Glad to showcase them for everyone. Glad you enjoyed 👍👍
