Building a 3-legged stool
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 лют 2019
- This 3-legged stool is a geometry and joinery challenge.
I'm building it with the pantorouter, which speeds up cutting the joinery, but it doesn't solve the angles, geometry and set-up isues.

You’re back to project videos!!😃
Indeed!
Thank you Matthias! The purpose of the project request was to provide a plan for high school and technical college shop classes to use to teach complex joinery using simple solutions. The PantoRouter is very popular in classrooms because it's the safest way for the students to use a router and we wanted to give them a project that uses the capabilities of the PantoRouter beyond standard mortise and tenon, box joints and dovetails. Your project and plans are perfect for this. We thank you, and thousand of aspiring young woodworkers thank you too!
Mom: what did you do at school today?

Gotta Love it! Those shop class projects are usually not particularly valuable, but they are the most valued pieces ever made. They are proudly displayed by parents and grandparents for decades if not generations. We love that kids can make really top quality projects using the PantoRouter as they learn to work with their hands.
These kids will have a beautiful piece and everyone has uses for a stool.
Mac, how long will the discount be good for? I'm saving up...
Randy Bartlett Mom: UA-cam??? Again???? What am I paying for!!!
@@richardpatterson4312 Any friend of Matthias is a friend of ours. Reach out when the time comes and we'll honor this discount.
The angular math in this project wrinkled my brain.
Me too. Should have been a health warning on this one, M.
Since he was designed it (in Sketchup), that software was useful in getting all the angles right. You can rotate objects in 3D space and, after you like it, you can read the angles off. Alternatively, you can decide on some angles and then design your parts around that.
Gross. My brain is super smooth. Jealous?
@@billybobjoe198 Not a good sign! The wrinkles are where the smarts are stored. I suggest you re-wrinkle with a leisurely ethanol soak.
trying to understand other peoples math or scetches has always been challenging. it's actually not difficult if you come up with your own design.
Me: I made picture frame with simple 45 degree miters!
Matthias: Hold my beer...
I sincerely hope he sees this and takes it as a challenge.
More like "hold my maple syrup"
Me: I tried to make a picture frame, but ended up with 44 degree mitres.
You: Hold my beer.
Matthias "Hold my slippers"
Looks like it works better than my two-legged stool.
A two legged stool will never rock...if it has very fat legs : )
@@juleswebb1885 we do not promote stool obesity on this channel
@@encalica853 ..ok, i understand. How about two legs with REALLY BIG shoes on?!?
@@juleswebb1885 if it's got big shoes, then it's probably got big feet. If it's got big feet, it's probably got 3 legs!
@@encalica853 ..unless it's a lady stool ; )
This is mind boggling amazing.
*Beginning of video:* "This looks nice and easy"
*End of video:* "I am officially stupid"
there are easier ways to build 3 legged stools that look close to this, but not quite like this.
Hallelujah, a build video from Matthias, all is right in the world again.
And one that was made way more complicated than it needed to be too! =D He's back!!!

Congratulations on building the most complicated 3-legged stool !
Yes but it will withstand far more abuse than anything made with pocket holes and screws.
I am regularly reminded how you are a much smarter man than I. I get stumped at more than 2 angles.
The trick is to plan it out in CAD, where you can have a computer help figure out all the angles. Then you just do what the computer says.
That third angle gets me every time
I'm happy that I can manage to hit the play button.
It's just mental how easy the pantorouter makes these actions.
What makes it great is the mind behind the project. Tools are tools.
If you try this at home ,make sure you have an empty 40 yard dumpster on hand and plenty wood available to screw up.
A wood stove too!
That's why traditional three-legged stools are often using tapered round columns, 'cause it's way easier to drill a hole at an angle and jam a tapered dowel in there than this. This one looks way cooler though.
Glad to see your feeling better to start doing projects again. Welcome back!
God father of the homeworker, how are you? Has your tendinitis improved? I really hope so. Greetings from Austria.
Guys like Matthias are always complaining about how shitty the comments section on UA-cam is, but they usually don't bother replying to comments that are (or seem to be) genuinely friendly, like yours :)
He discusses it a little in his shop update just posted.
He must be doing better, since he made that video with a whole bunch of ten-din joints ...
I'll see myself out ...
Thank you Matthias. Great to see you back in your workshop.
I bought a panto router a few weeks ago and recently assembled it. I haven't been able to use it yet, but I am VERY excited to try it out!
Great to see you back again! Even if it's not on a regular schedule. Hoping your health is continuing to improve. Great project too! Thanks for posting!
I'm guessing that you're well enough to be doing this. Glad to see you back at it; your videos always make the engineer in me giddy.
The stool looks very sturdy ,I like the way the leg braces cross each other awesome design element. When I watch you build this stool you make it look so easy. That's testament to your craftsmanship. great video. It's good to see you back in shop.
What a wonderful stool!!! Matthias you are the best! Love your videos!
It's good to see you're back in the Workshop
Good to see you back in the shop and enjoying your Algebraic Equations once again.
A three legged stool with compound mortises and tenons Norm Abrams would be impressed! Seriously though Amazing project and it's good to see you back in action. Keep up the great work.
Watched a Wood Magazine review of the machine, interesting yet beyond my needs. Glad to see you were the inventor. The price isn't that bad, what the machine needs is an extensive selection of templates.
Nice! You're back. Im excited for new videos like these!
I so much enjoy these practical projects that are so well designed and built. Great to see them again.
Glad to see you back up and around!
I built a shelf/ cubby for my lawn mower on the bottom and snow blower on top, using double mortise and tenon cut with a router, and table saw, dowels for the top, glued it all up. No nails or screws. Inspired by the Mathias Master!
I'd love to see a picture of that. Does it have some sort of ramp to wheel the snowblower up to the top, or is this a much smaller snow blower than I'm thinking?
It's good to see you back to making wood projects again
A beautifully simple, complicated project. Love it!
Nice work Matthias and glad to see you back making well designed projects.
I got really happy from this video. Good to see your tendonitis starting to cure, good to see you making furniture like tour old man used to do, good to have our woodworking hero back in action.
Thank Matthias, great to see you back and still got it. Entertaining
This is one of the most complicated projects I’ve seen!!! 😱 Real pro!! So fun to watch.
The panarouter is a simple and elegant machine. Love the versatility!
That triangular join between the crossbars is very aesthetically pleasing.
Hey Matthias! Cool project! Just when I think I've seen it all, you show me something new! I'm an engineer and woodworker but still learning from your talent! Thank you for what you do.
Of course, take it easy. Your health is of utmost importance.
That dust shroud really caught my eye at first glance. Now i'm wondering how many kids fibre optic lamps i'll need to collect to make my own? :)
Your skill/spatial reasoning/experience continue to impress.
I love when sometimes you made a mistake.. And come up with briliant solution.. LOVE IT
Clever as ever. Glad to see you back building wood things!
Great to see you in the shop again. I hope your arm is mending well
So glad that you're back to hard-core stuff!
thanks for sharing your stool sample. it appears firm and has a nice light brown color.
Wood is so much better than lego : )
Wood is so much better than cardboard.
I'm really glad to see you back to woodworking
Good to see you woodworking again.
Its no longer stool its a piece of ART Nice work Sir
This is almost an insult to his work. His items have a function. Art does not. lol
after all these years, a sponsor! Good for you, Matthias. Here's to hoping that you get healed up quickly so we can see more project videos.
I'm SO glad you're back to making stuff sir.
Glad to see your wood work again!
Glad to see Matthias working with some wood again! The one thing that I know I can do for sure on that project would be those 1/2" roundovers! :)
Hi Mathias,
Awesome tutorial on compound angles. Thanks.
Nice little stool ;-) personally I prefer the wooden pantarouter I already build one but mine with some extras like the tilting table and dust collection.
Good to see you are more healthy now
greetings from France Tim
France? Lived there for 4 years and everyone was weak. Sure you are not Germanic?
@@benzmansl65amg yes I am German (sorry)
And thanks to all these complicated precise joinery the 3 legged stool will never waggle.
Thank you for mentioning the best property of 3-legged stools at the end!
Wow Mathias, you never cease to amaze me.
Yes Matthias you're really stepping up the technology in your projects! :-)
Really like these small build project! Hope you can do more!
Man, I wish you did a fancy joint for the stool seat. Great work as always.
Good to see you building again Matthias even though its only a stool. Hope the tendinitis is getting better.
Good to see you back with projects!
loving it, always look forward to whatever you put out, but really enjoy your project videos!
Really great 'simple' project :D love to see you back in the shop. Hope the tendinitis is easing off
Wow, math! Glad to see you're well enough to do some woodworking projects!
Simple and complicated at the same time. Thanks for sharing !
Nice 3 legged stool Matthias! Thanks for sharing the video with us.👍😎JP
Dang bro... you really are a wizard with that Pantorouter. You made that look so easy even though i feel so dumb trying to figure out what you're doing. Great job.
Great to see you back on the tools Matthias.
Nice to see you woodworking again. Nice build
I am very happy to see ypu making projects again.
You look happy to be woodworking again. Happy to see that. :)
Magnífico sillón amigo gracias por compartir todo el proceso de fabricación saludos 😁👍
The stool doesn’t rock Matthias...but you do!
it's so nice to see you're back at projects !
I love you, Matthias!
Glad to see a project. Hope you're all healed up and aren't being too risky.
Great to see you back.
This thing is straight up amazing!
Very nice stool Matthias I wish I could make stuff like you
will be very efficient for making many 3-legged stool. awesome!
Awesome work as always Sir
Just what I was looking for, an easy beginners wood work project.
Very nice to see you back making sawdust. I hope it means you have had a strong recovery.
Looks great Matthias
Looks great! Something to aspire to making eventually
The clamps with the red handle are really beautiful.
Only problem, they cost a lot.
What a stool, very complicated.
Ogni volta che guardo i tuoi video rimango a bocca aperta. Sei un mago
Great to see you again !!
I sure am amazed at what you can do friend !
Finally, a project made out of something other than MDF!
Glad to see your sore tendons are no longer that sore.
Great job, it's great to see you back to work shop
I'm sure there are more complicated ways of making a 3-legged stool, but I cannot think of any now :-) Well done!
I'm super jealous of that pantorouter!
Thanks for showing how and sharing that well done wow
This reminds me of my first, and so far, only woodworking project: an eight foot, tapered tomato cage with six legs, staggered ladder rungs, and top and bottom crosspieces to hold the legs together. It had quite a few compound angles, and I wish I could have built it with compound mortise and tenons, but I only had a circular saw, so unfortunately, it's held together with about 130 screws.
I didn't know CAD, so I decided to design it with pencil and paper. It probably would have been faster for me to learn CAD, but those compound angles sure helped refresh my memory of trigonometry.
Nicely done..
This chair is far more complicated than first glance. Very nice.
love the self levelling stool.
