- This never-fail alcohol ink technique is easy and gives stunning results every time! I tried it a few ways (different inks, different papers) so you can see what will work for you! And I have clean-up tips, too! (always work in a well-ventilated area and follow all safety rules for working with alcohol inks).

Loved this video! What a lot of mixed media artists do is scan in their original backgrounds so they can print them out and use them over and over again. Many never use the original and keep it on file.

Thanks for this technique with stencils. Right up my alley. In your gold tones example (2:45 mins), the inks will always reactivate bc you're adding the same solvent. Try lift ink instead, with a baby wipe or dabber, and you'll get the layered look. For cleaning, I buy 99% or 100% alcohol from a solvent supplier - one of whom makes an acetone blend (proprietary) that works for cleaning and specifically for working with alcohol inks (better than blending solution). This also cleans off Distress and other acrylic paints that are stuck to hard surfaces. Rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer have insufficient levels to be effective in cleaning (need > 90%). Medical grade sanitizer is better and has glycerine, so is great for all craft cleaning in general. Most countries have solvent makers, because retail exports are prohibited. Prices are incredibly low, because they're not packaged for specialty crafts. Oh - and they also make 99% acetone for removing dip / acrylic nail coatings without the beauty-shop price tags.

I’ve heard Grafix plastic also works and supposedly you can lift back to white. I haven’t tried it yet though. Some of my inks stained the yupo paper and blue stained the Nara paper which was supposed to lift back to white. I used Picasso alcohol inks.
These panels and cards are beautiful Ardyth. I recently bought Jacquard alcohol ink Pinata color clean up solution it works great just pour some on and wipe away with paper towel. Blending solution does the same thing too.

Nice to see some one else trying this-I use stencils with alcohol ink in my mixed media and fine art work and I never see it on UA-cam. On cleaning I do find that most times stencils will get pretty clean if you let them set in a shallow bath of isopropyl alcohol for a bit. I use a paper storage tub with a lid so I can contain the fumes and just throw my stencils in there as I work. Let them soak for a few hours, then wipe them down with a paper towel or shammy and some clean isopropyl. Its pretty cheap to get big bottles of isopropyl alcohol but even the bottles you buy at the grocery are big enough to clean a batch of stencils if you use the tub method.
That's great advice - running out of alcohol while filming certainly didn't help! lol! Thanks for sharing that and for watching!

Hi my name is Trish ( just using the husband’s account) I really loved this idea. Just a thought, when you wanted to shift the stencil or layer another on top, you could use alcohol lift ink on a sponge dauber to create that second pattern. But I have gotta try this.

Hi Ardyth, great job! I’m wondering if rubbing/soaking your stencils in either methylated spirits (it contains an alcohol), or acetone ( another organic solvent), might get them clean. Of course do this outside, or in a well ventilated area due to the fumes! I personally would try soaking. Use a container that has a lid, to cut down on evaporation and smell. You need a solvent with the same chemical nature as the inks to ‘dissolve’ them. You could of course use vodka, but that might be a bit expensive! LOL. Good luck! Also, MERRY CHRISTMAS. 😀🦘🐨🎆🎇🌠🎊🎁🎉

Wow, what a great video! I have been using the Craft Plastic with excellent results, and not as costly as Yupo. I use a jelly roll pan with alcohol in it to quickly soak the stencils and wipe them clean. Yup...I'm one of those card makers who always wants clean stencils. Thank you again Ardyth for sharing your knowledge.

Great idea to use the larger stencils that way. Many times in the past when I ordered a stencil it was not the small one but a huge one more for mixed media not Cardmaking. My lack of checking. I’ve used them but not like this, cutting them in fourths. Thanks for the idea. I love alcohol inks and any new ideas are very much appreciated!

Another great use for large stencils is to put them on paper and do coffee dyeing...you get great results!!

This is terrific! I tried some alcohol blending on that “Yupo alternative” paper and it did not go so well so maybe the stencil idea will be better. I have several of Keren Tamir’s stencils and they will be perfect for this! TYFS ❤️🦋💜
Yes, I need to try some other techniques on the plastic. I noticed even with this one, that the inks didn't seem to get under the stencil quite as much, or maybe because I used lighter colours. Clearly there is more experimentation to do! lol! Thanks for watching!

What a great technique! I love your trying out these and sharing them with us. Regarding the rubbing alcohol that you were trying for removing ink stain from your stencils, what percentage strength were you using? Just a thought.
I had 99%. Someone else suggested that Jacquard actually has a cleaning solution, so I may try that, but I'm not too worried about a little staining. Thanks so much for watching1
I've watched your video twice, I'm sure I've missed something in your excellent tutorial, so I have a question. Did you remove the stencil after 30 minutes or after the 3 hours of drying time? I think I'd like this technique and don't really mind staining my stencils.
I see why that isn't clear. I did actually try both, but when I removed it after 30 minutes, the ink kept moving and I lost the pattern, so I recommend leaving it on until the ink is at least tacky to the touch, and not runny. Thank you for another great tutorial video. I love all the cards and the designs turned out beautiful. I have one question. Did you put any pixie spray or something similar on the back of the stencils? Or did they stay in place pretty well when you added the alcohol ink?
I did not use Pixie Spray here. For this technique you really want the ink to be able to get in underneath a bit. I wonder what would happen if I did try it sometime! lol! Thanks so much for watching!

You made stunning cards again 🥰🥰🥰. I tried alcoholinks, the result is beautiful. Great you showed the hours after pictures 😍But I don’t like the mess 🤪 and the amount of alcohol it needs to clean 😫. I would not want my stencils to stain 😭. You can try a wonder sponge (those white ones that wear out after using) maybe? I use that after using texture pastes.

I am on an alcohol ink binge session…so really appreciate your info…do you ever use the backside of glossy photo paper? I tried once but no luck, this backround was too textured and just absorbed the ink. Thanks for the help!😊
I have not tried that and always wondered why people wouldn't use the front side of the glossy photo paper? I would think that would work better? Alcohol inks also look great on acetate and vellum! Thanks for watching!

SO pretty. And tbh, a lot of the stains will stay on your stencils. But what i have done is this: lay your stencil (inky side up)on top of a piece if cardstock. Use an alcohol- soaked cotton ball (or paper towel ,or whatever) to wipe over the stencil. The regular cardstock will absorb the alcohol (which is now very colorful). This doesn't work so well with Yupo, because the alcohol doesn't absorb, so you end up just pushing it around. If you're lucky, you get ANOTHER colorful background, but fairly different because it's on cardsrock.
That sounds like it's worth trying as a technique, even if we don't care so much about the stains on the stencils! lol! Thanks for sharing that! And thanks for watching!

Did you use alcohol or blending solution- I only saw ink being used? The pieces are beautiful.
I clean my stencil right away and then use hero arts ultra clean cleanser ( best out there).
For these cards I didn't add any alcohol or blending solution, but I have spritzed alcohol over top to help get ink moving on other backgrounds I've made that aren't in the video and it works, too! Thanks for the tip about Ultra Clean - I have some of that! Thanks for watching!
I am going to try Murthy’s Oil Soap to remove the inks. I recently (oops) got Alcohol Ink on a pair of pants. It took several soakings with the. Murthy’s but they look good as new. I have also used it to take ink from shirts that went thru the wash with an ink pen…a real mess. Before they went into the dryer I liberally poured Murthy’s on the damp shirts gave them a little scrub, let them set over nite and threw them into the wash and they came out looking like new! Will let you know how they turn out….

No pixie spray this time. Because I wasn't rubbing the stencil (like I would for ink blending), I didn't think I would need it, and I didn't! Thanks so much for watching!

Photo paper for sure. Acetate, even. Regular cardstock won't get the alcohol ink moving as much, but you could experiment to see if you get something pretty! Thanks for watching!

It can work on any non porous substrate. Acetate, glass, mirrors, alfoil ect.

What liquid glue do you use?
Haha! Over the years, I've tried them all. I find the glue itself is pretty consistent between brands, so the container, more precisely, the tip is important to me. My favourites have been Bearly Art and Tonic Nuvo Deluxe. Thanks for watching!

If you want to use a stencil with alchol ink and still want to use it with stamp pads, get 2 of the same stencil. I have a favorite stencil I use a lot. Got a 2nd one just for stamp ink the other I use with paint. I will try alcohol inks with stencils. Yours came out beautiful. I try it with cheap ones 1st. The craft plastic works as well as the ranger ones. A whole lot cheaper too.
That is a very smart idea! Stencils are one of the most affordable tools we crafters have. I have been known to buy more than one alphabet die set or stamp set, so I can double my letters. Thanks for watching and sharing your idea!

Love the TH ink (aka red papered) the most. Besides the only other Reiner I own is some old SU bottles. But I love the outcome on your cards. I am totally deterred from making as 1. I don’t own any good quality stencils, nor larger ones.and 2. The drying and clean up time.
