- Weird flex, but ok. We made a pair of giant scissors. Because [INSERT PLENTY OF REASONS]. Thanks NordVPN for keeping my shop lights on and for keeping my data safe. Go to NordVPN.com/SI... and use code SIMONE to get 75% off a 3 year plan and an extra month for free.
Also thanks to Marcos and Trevor for helping me make the scissors, and for Scott for helping filming, and to JACKIE GRIEFF FOR HELPING ME EDIT THIS VIDEO! New person, new person! Welcome onboard Jackie.
And last, but not least: thanks to Lincoln Electric for sending me a welder and a plasma cutter! PROBABLY UNCALLED FOR DISCLAIMER: I'm not sponsored by Lincoln, but they did send me the stuff for free. ANOTHER UNCALLED FOR DISCLAIMER: I thoroughly want to befriend all their employees, because they are very kind and funny.

Did your impact driver fall?!?! The suspense is killing me 5:29
Right after it disappears off the edge of the table, you can see it on the right side, so I'm assuming she caught it before it fell and moved it? But then again, maybe she just picked it up post-fall...

That's funny! Mera mig sounds like mírame, Spanish for "Look at me!"
That must've been one hell of an exercise to run with those scissors 😂
If U want scissors to cut, you need to slightly bend the blades towards eachother so there's only a small part of the blade touching the other blade at a time
the blades need to be slightly bent inwards scissors are a shear cut and don't rely on sharpness it's the shearing from the two perfectly flat surfaces the sharpness only aids in dispersing the material after it is cut. i really like this video good job!
Weird Al WISHES he'd used "Running With Forks" as his album name back in '99.
*this is cutting-edge technology right here*
in my nonprofessianol opinion they dont cut because of too much slack, in my childhood i played with scissors alot and i went thru like 50 atleast. and ive found outthere are 2 ways too fix the slack problem, 1 pressure of the blades against each other thru tightening the nut(short term solution), 2 is the same but with the shape of the blade, needs less pressure so they stay nonslack longer and they also advertise it as selfsharpening (dunno if thats the case) itll go a long way :D
Please be a witch for Halloween and use the giant wooden scissors as your broom!
Simone you’re dad jokes are awesome
Something about making scissors out of paper (for the model, at least) is really ironic and poetic.
I thought you were going to have a go at cutting the grass when you laid them down.

@@jensimaster She could use an inverter on the Tesla though the 12V DC to DC convertor in the car would be a limiting factor probably could get 2 or 3KW out of it for a short time if everything else in the car was turned off.
There's also tapping into the HV DC directly from the battery and you have hundreds of KW to play with but that's really dangerous.
For me Museums > cool clubs
𝑙𝑜𝑙𝑧
I don't know If you tried this, but scissors don't have straight blades. The shears curve inward towards each other creating a pinch point that moves forward as you close them. This eliminates slop and negates the need to have perfectly matching edges. You can see it if you align the cut with a light source and close them slowly. So maybe curving the shears a bit inwards may help.
That was the first thing I thought of, 9 months too late. I just found this channel and think it's pretty cool.

Ryan Langan The word you’re looking for is Boulder
@@theXEN0KID No. There's nothing humorous about a boulder. Giant rock keeps the theme with giant scissors.
not really, scissors are usually a bit bent so the link point makes spring like forces, which makes more friction between blades.

Scissors aren’t flat. They have curved faces so there is always tension and they always make contact with each blade at a point that moves down the blade as you cut. So if you can put a small curve on each blade it will work, but not so much that you can’t overcome the bend when you close them. And since they are 1/2 in thick steel, the problem is that you won’t be strong enough to open or close them maybe. Unless you build a hydraulic piston hand, which you should do.
Or just have a wave spring washer at the center, so the deflection is not in the blade but in the joint
I was thinking the same thing and as a blacksmith of course I want fire fire fire so heat the inside of each blade with big OxyPropane rosebud (maybe just a couple hundred degrees, and then hit it with a hose and it'll warp into a nice curve. Or hydraulic press, cuz we all know life is better with hydraulics,,, but then again fire FIRE FIRE!!
Wow this is cool!
"nobody's saying don't run with knives"

With a pair of scissors -- real scissors -- the two blades are actually slightly curved toward each other. This ensures that the two shearing edges actually make contact with each other down the full length of the cut. If your two shearing edges are separated by a hair's breadth, that will probably be enough to prevent a shear. Even if your two shearing edges have contact initially, but lose that contact later during the shear, then the complete shear down the full length of the paper will fail. That's why the two blades are bent slightly toward each other: it guarantees blade-against-blade contact down the full length of the shear.
It also keeps the cutting faces grinding on each other, hence the self-sharpening nature of scissors.
Was going to say this but you saved the trouble!
yeah simone should have talked to a scissors engineer before making this!!

This channel is a cut above the rest! You definitely have an edge over your competition. I hope all your videos are just as sharp. :P
ive noticed that the blades on my good scissors arent flat, but curved
so as they cut, they are pressing into each other like 2 springs
Bingo - everyone thinks they understand how scissors work but that's the real secret.
Yup, I had a pair of scissors I had to fix after I bent the blades straight by accident.
Putting a bend into the thick steel used in these Giant Scissors would be quite a challenge with the shop tools she has.
@@station240 no it would be quite easy.. Oxy torch and heating on the right spots
There’s one more secret to how scissors work that has to do with right or left handedness. Simone’s giant scissors are lefties😀
When you cut with a pair of scissors the natural motion of your thumb moves down and towards the center of your body which in turn levers the lower blade up and away from the center of your body.
Scissors have a slight inward curve to them
So that they focus the interface to a single point as the blades cross. Scissors cut because of this curve more than the sharpness of the blades. Take a close look at scissors and how they work and you will see what i am talking about
Indeed. Is this not common knowledge?
L Etten I don’t know if it is or not, but I did not see her accounting for this in the build, and I think it may be why they are not cutting as well as expected
I'm honestly stunned Simone hasn't entered the Kinetic Sculpture Grand Championship up in NorCal (Humboldt County), her and her team would destroy the competition.
Based on the level of functionality of many of Simone's previous robots, I suspect "destroy the competition" might be a bit too literally close to the truth... LOL
@@nairbvel Ah, but "destroying the competition" and "winning" aren't mutually exclusive! Simone's out here playing a different game where destruction is the only goal
Her work is a cut above the rest.
3:51 me when i finally find the CEO of racism
Doesn’t matter now it’s on the wall, but you can improve the cut by making the blades curve slightly concave towards each other, with the idea of always having one point in contact.
they do already?
Yep
So this video is about Simone building a giant pair of scissors in order to run and go on a date with it
Seems legit
Nothing to see here.. do you have a warrant??
A few folks have mentioned the curvature of scissor blades, but also a large aspect of how they work is the left/right pressure of your fingers, which is why there are lefty and righty scissors, even though they basically look the same. The natural way your hand closes the grips is what pushes the blades together.
Maybe you can sell or donate these to a salon as a decoration!

Great project! Standard-size scissors have a slight curvature in the blades to force the cutting edges together. Yours might cut better if you replicated that feature. The video was fun to watch - is this the director's cut?
Soooo basically keep making giant scissors?
Also sissors are right or left handed if you use wrong hand they won't cut very well
I guess the thought of hammering the massive blades into the right shape made her abandon the idea immediately
@@Doping1234 A bit of heat applied to one side will cause it to curl.

"Excuse me, could you pass me the giant staple? I'm out."
This is just the giant, very drawn out and maker’s version of “I need scissors to open the new scissors”
Omg that LITERALLY happened to me TODAY. I moved countries and didn't bring anything with me other than my clothes and toiletries. I rented a completely empty apartment (not even a fridge, nothing) and had to furnish it from scratch. Naturally, I bought a lot of things, like tools and kitchen utensils, that came in tightly sealed packages, so I also bought scissors. I had to ask my neighbor, whom I hadn't met yet, for her scissors in order to open my own scissors. The new scissors even had a "cut through here WITH SCISSORS to open" little icon on the package. Ridiculous! 🤦🏻♀️
So left or Right handed Scissors? that could your problem, wrong hand
that does apear to be a pair of lefties.

I think they r both handed scissors
Yup the model scissors were right handed but the big ones turned out left handed. I don't think anyone noticed and it really doesn't matter at that scale.
Is that why I can't use scissors? They're all left handed?
big minitures = bigatures. (coined by the folks at Weta Workshops that built the massive models of the towers for the Lord of the Rings movies)
glad I checked the comments before posting...😁
Yeah, but those are big (relatively) models of things, that are still smaller than the original things. What Simone did is take something tiny like a pair of scissors, and enlarge it to many times it's original size...
Exactly what club is going to keep you out when you've got a plasma cutter?

Simone please cover the tip so you don't get hurt if you go up the stairs in the dark
Don't the blades on scissors bend towards each other slightly so that they are only in contact at one small point along the blade for the entire cut? Try bending the blades a bit and see if having them somewhat bowed inwards doesn't improve the cutting ability. Thumbs up so she sees this!
Came here to say this. A simple curved jig and some G-clamps should do the trick. Then we can cut ALL THE HAIR!
yeah that is what i thought too but bending this thick metal sheet would be really hard with somewhat limited tools and actually cutting with them would need big force and proably the edge would get blunt quickly, i think its better to keep it nice and nonfunctional
i also came here to say the same thing, it is an a very slight ark inward.
Just build some kind of jig, clamp them in and apply heat. Scissors absolutely need a curve, especially large ones.
Yeah, i guess she missed a mayor step in her build. 1. Figure out how scissors actually work.
I bought pair of scissors because I needed them and needed a pair of scissors to open them. Wait...what?

It does to be honest, maybe they should add a cover so that the sharp points are not a threat. At the very least i can see in the future a sleeve get stuck in the sharp point and getting torn.
