Why are EF to RF adapters so important? What are your options? What should you choose?
Are there any weather sealing on any of the adapters..? The R6 has decent weather sealing and many of the Canon lenses have good weather sealing. But if the adapter lacks weather sealing then all the weather sealing on the body and the lens goes for a toss. I hope I have been able to convey my concern.
I think the Mieke adaptor has weather sealing. I’d rather buy original Canon (if I could find one for sale!)
@@cp4512 good info! I agree with you on buying the original, but sometimes you just can't!
Thanks Wes. Its videos like this that really help researching making the jump to mirrorless bodies and save some money by using my old glass
Glad it was helpful. Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment!
Thanks, Wes. This was exactly the information that I needed.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video! I was lucky to find the Canon EF to RF with the control ring adapter in stock at Canon USA randomly. Should arrive tomorrow.
You're welcome! And I'm glad you found it! Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment!
very good video Wes. Thanks!
Well done, Wes. Thank you. 👍🏻
Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment! I appreciate you.
📸 Excellent & informative!
I used the vello adapter until I got the canon version. The vello quality was a major surprise. High end feel and performance. I’m a canon fan so that’s why I eventually swapped it out. But the vello really impressed me. Also I got my canon ef to rf from Best Buy. If you check the site throughout the day they will have a few in stock. You have to check a lot though.
Thank you for the tip! I appreciate you!
Thank you very much for your tips!
You are welcome! Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment!
Meike has a lovely option M-EFTR-A which is the only non Canon adaptor that also comes with weather sealing rings that you find in the Canon original, for about half the price of the Canon one.
Good tip!
GOOD and GREAT info... thank you! Take care!
Thank you! I appreciate you watching and leaving a comment.
Thanks for this video. This is the kind of info I've been looking for.
I'm fairly new to photography, I bought an R6 as my first camera (expensive, but should last me a decade I hope!). Anyways, my brother has a bunch of EF lenses, and I just didn't really know what was the best adapter to take advantage of all of his glass. And now I know! Thanks much!
Thank you for watching! Glad it was helpful. You're going to love the R6!
Same here. Just bought the r6 and it feels sooo good;) i have a canon 80d but wanted a mirrorless. Your explanation is down to earth and understandable. I also am a newbie and itching to get out there. Thank u
great video and very cool effect.
Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment!
Thanks! Great and helpful. 😀
I hope you get an adapter for your R6!
Thx, very helpful!
You're welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful. If you have any more questions about using adapter rings or anything else, just let me know!
Great video Wes! With the cost of RF glass vs. EF glass, it makes me want to consider more economical EF glass for my R. Additionally I’ve taken Canon’s variable ND filter off my wish list because of the cost + clear insert. While that system is innovative, there are other filter solutions. I’m very curious to see Canon’s release of RF extenders and how they work. My next big purchase is either the RF 70-200 or RF 100-500. The 70-200 has proven to be one of the best lenses to buy, and with an extender, could make my decision easy. Thanks again for your time and effort and keeping us informed on glass and accessories for our R. Stay safe and healthy. Mahalo and Aloha.
I own a the EF to EF-M Commlite brand for my Canon M50 and it works great. Another brand out there for adapters and worth taking a look if you are are trying to adapt cinema lenses or vintage film lenses and that is the Fotodiox brand.
Thanks for sharing the info on the Commlite and the Fotodiox. Are there any videos on your channel on either of those options?
Wes Kriesel Photo Yes, thank you for asking: Shooting A Vintage Lens On The Canon EOS R and Macro Photography On The Canon EOS R With A Vintage 100 MM F2.8 Lens. Adapters can open up your photography to a world of untapped lenses 👍🏼
thank you very useful video
Good reviews.👍
Thank you for watching and for leaving feedback!
Awesome advice from the love child of Mark Wahlberg and James Hetfield. ;)
Ha ha, thanks!
Yeah!
The k&f concept adapter is good :)
Awesome! Thank you for sharing that feedback!
Use the Viltrox with adjustment ring. Works great after updating the firmware - which however was more difficult than it should be as it is finicky with the USB-cable and PC you use .
Ooooh! I need to check for firmware updates on it! Thank you for the input!
Hi Wes, thanks for the video.
EF to RF Adapters are worth the money. I upgraded from Canon DSLR's to the R-System and had purchased in the last 10 years or so some EF-Lenses. With the basic Adapter (99€) i can use my "old" glass and even the EF-S 60/2.8 USM Macro without any problems. This little Macro turns my R6 into a 8 Mp APSC-Camera and of course you can see the pixels if you crop 300%, but who cares? :-)
Greetings and stay healthy! - Andreas
Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment! The adapters are so useful!
Hi Wes I like your channel so much I did a shout out to your channel on my channel, lovely ole job....
Thank you for the kind words!
I was kinda hoping you'd inform us EFS lens owners with Aps cameras how the adapters would work on cameras like the R6 or R7??
Good question - this video was made before those models were announced so unfortunately I wasn't able to include the information in this video.
I just bought an EF-R adapter was because I was upgrading my rebel t6i to an eos RP body and I already had 3 EF lenses and I thought it would save money to just be able to use my EF lenses on my RP using an adapter
how is it? i’m thinking of upgrading!
I bought the R6 for hobby and an Meike RF Adapter (because Canon is out of stock) it has rubber sealing at the RF mount side like the Canon and it works fine at the moment
Awesome! Thank you for watching and for the info on the Meike adapter!
Do you know, if the IS is working on your EF lenses? Maybe Canon/Stanton/Sigma?
@@FuryyyFX The IS is working with my Sigma or Tamron
@@ToxicScorpion1989 danke dir ;)
you listed all in the description except the adapter?
I have the Viltrox, but I didn't have a choice as the Canon one is sold out everywhere. It works fine on my EF 70-200mm, but not so well on my Sigma 150-600mm. The FULL focusing option doesn't work which means you will have to toggle between 2.8-10m and 10m to infinity. Also, sometimes when you switch on the OS, it doesn't activate. You might need to switch it to off and on again. For birding, it is a problem when you need speed. I am not saying you must use native lenses, but for 3rd party lenses, is best to use the ones developed with the RF mount which unfortunately doesn't exist at the moment. I have only just bought my R5 a few weeks back, I was hoping I could just adapt my Sigma 150-600mm as I find the RF 100-500mm to be a massive rip-off. Now? I might even consider jumping ship and go native with the FE 200-600mm on a Sony outfit.
Thank you for the input. That's a disappointment about the AF! I'm new to the R5 too (had it about a week) and looking forward to using it more.
@@WesKriesel The R5 produces really beautiful images. For me, in terms of birding though, the right way of using it is to shoot it with the big primes and teleconverters. But, I only shoot with a superzoom whereby teleconverters are not ideal really and as such I find myself pretty much shooting the camera in APS-C crop mode full time much like when I was on an APS-C body. But, the R5 is not high res enough for that. In crop mode, it only gives you 17 MP. Just to put it into context, the A1 is slightly better at 21 MP and the A7R IV better still at 26 MP in crop mode. Other than that, the animal tracking on the R5 is just fantastic and as good as advertised. But, I just don't think I can resolve the lens issue if I stick with Canon and refuse to get the RF 100-500mm.
@@Rascallucci could you pls explain the experience with sigma 150 600, is there autofocus issues while in continuous mode? I'm planning for R6 with sigma 150 600, for birding.
I haven't seen any discussion on the balance of the lenses. All the lenses will be long, like a 70-200mm f/4 on an EF camera. Telephotos will look like a long pipe. How will the camera handle?
Fair question. The adapters & extenders are so light that I haven't noticed a difference honestly. But I've only extensively used the EF 70-200 and it's not been an issue.
Great vids. I’m a kind of run and gun documentary/ vlogger, and I’m struggling with which kind of adapters is suitable for me.
I understand. What have you tried out and what's working best so far?
@@WesKriesel for now, RF 35 is my Canon R to-go lens. It’s a good lens for capturing the details, however, it’s not wide enough for vlogging talk head, especially when filming in a tight space, as well as recording the subject’s talking. Some of them were speaking so gently I cannot catch any sound of them with Rode VideoMicro on the top of Canon R.
As I have EF 16-35 from my previous shooting history, hence, I would like to try the adapter for the mission instead.
It's more money, I know, but the 15-35mm is amazing. I used the RF 35mm for a year for vlogs/videos before I invested in the 15-35mm. Also, the Rode Go Wireless mics were a gamechanger for me!
Yes, with the adapter, you'll be set with the 16-35.
@@WesKriesel yes, same here. I bought only one set of Rode Wireless Go, but only use during the talent talking. That’s a scenario when the subject is fixed.
But when the conditions come to run and gun, I switch to Rode VideoMicro. Mainly due to the subjects are uncertain. By the way, most of the time, I filmed the triathletes who were under training sessions. So, you can imagine I shoot them when they were swimming, cycling, running, and other workouts. Only a few times, the subject can stop for a while and talk with Rode Wireless Go.
I saw an amazon response saying that these crop down the image and lower it to 12 mp is that true? Or does it keep the same full sensor and mp etc?
Does the IS of the EF lenses (Sigma/Tamron/Canon) work on the vommlite/Meike?
I would use one of them for my R6
Two-years later, but still a very informative, straightforward and helpful video. The cheap route is the way I will go. Thanks Wes!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment!
I wanted to know about the basic $ 99/- adapter. Surprised no proper briefing about it!
Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment.
one thing about adapters, I just got my Viltrox adapter (I'm still waiting for one from Canon) and went straight to the store to try on some EF lenses, first lens I tried the EF85 1.8, it did not work ... I played a minute or two, switched the camera on and off a couple of times, reattached the lens and finally it started working... the question is if this will happen in the time where you need to take this shot now
Yes, that's a tough situation. I find that sometimes I need to re-seat the lens when using a non-native lens to get everything synced and working. Nobody has time for that in a time-sensitive shooting situation!
That's right use the glass you have!!
❤️❤️❤️
I have the viltrox good for light lenses but not advisable for Heavy telephoto lense.. it’s losing connection from the body
Good info Thank you for the input!
Hi do you have a link to buy the canon ef - rf adapter standed no ajustable ring or filter crap ?
Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment. Try this link: amzn.to/3s3VyV4
can i fit a canon 2x converter between the adapter and my canon 24x105 lens
I don't believe the converters work with the 24-105. Check out the Canon website - the 2x converter works only with certain lenses.
Thanks for the video. Any advice on the R6 IBIS (in body image stabilization) with non-IS Canon lenses? Does the Canon adapter allow the IBIS to work with non-IS lenses?
Hi Jeremy! Good question. Since IBIS literally happens in the body of the camera, it works no matter what lens you add to the R6. My buddy Pablo just uploaded a video on using non-IS lenses on the R6 - check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/Bv4DoCowBxE/v-deo.html
@@WesKriesel Thanks!
What is currently the best adapter for using EF lens on the R5?
I prefer the "plain" EF to RF - no control ring or ND filter. My second choice would be the control ring version.
So this is why I haven't seen Mark Wahlberg in any films recently... He's been out here doing camera reviews 😅
Ha ha! Shhhhhh. 🤣
..
So is it that when we use the ef to rf adapter.. the camera starts working in Apsc mode .. or there is any crop resolution that happens ?? I want to know when we use this adapter on R5 or R6 and we use these adapters
When you use the EF to RF adapter with a full frame EF lens, you not experience a crop of any kind. Is this what you are asking? What specific lens were you wondering about?
Wes Kriesel Photo yes thanks a lot for providing this info ..
But there's no way to do it the other way around? Use an RF lens on like a T6i?
That's correct.
can you still use auto focus
Yes, autofocus works with Canon EF lenses on R series camera using the Canon adapters.
Too bad these are never in stock :( you can snag them on ebay for X2-3 the price
That Canon didn’t include the clear filter with the filter adapter baffles me.
Good point!
Is this guy related to the walbergs?
Ha ha, nope.
I’m so confused I have a canon Eos R are the mirror lenses RF OR EF?
RF lenses fit natively on the R. EF lenses can work but only if you use the adapter.
@@WesKriesel if I have the canon eos R do you think I’m better of with RF 1.8 or EF 1.4? I usually use my R for Instagram pictures! I usually Vlog with my canon G7x Mark II for UA-cam videos but I want to start using my canon for like home videos on my channel so I’m not sure what lense would be best? I use a EF 25-105mm right now but it’s so heavy for pictures and vlogging lol idk if I should sell that one
Do you mean the RF 35mm F/1.8 lens? I love that lens but while it works ok for filming on a tripod at home, it's not wide enough for handheld vlogging. That's my two cents!
@@WesKriesel RF 50mm 1.8 for my canon eos R and ahhhh okay I think I’ve been into other experts that said the same thing you did!! About it not being wide enough for vlogs I’m assuming RF 50mm 1.8 is much more up close than RF 35mm 1.8 correct? The lense I use on my R rn is EF 24-105mm with my Adapter
Yes, you're right. The 50mm will give a closer view.
Canon might have purposefully stopped production of adapters in order to force people buy the pricey RF lenses!
😮
