I’ll never understand why Cosby fired Lisa because she was pregnant. She was an adult and married at the time of her pregnancy.
When Phylicia Rashad became pregnant, they concealed it behind props and having her sit down a lot. Now, the movie she made was very raunchy. I can understand why he was concerned about that. But her pregnancy could’ve been concealed.

Phylicia Rashad was also 40+ years old. Lisa was supposed to be a college student. They could’ve concealed it but the public would still talk. Not to mention this was the 80s-90s. We’re thinking about life as we know it in 2023. Back then being that young, black and pregnant on tv wasn’t a good look because the public had an idea of her as a “good girl.” Each generation becomes a little more accepting than the last. Think about the 50s and 60s, if you got pregnant young back then you couldn’t even keep your babies. Family sent you “down south” until that baby was born, a cousin or auntie would take it and you return back North like nothing happened. Just a different time.

@@AngelaAngelicaWarren A dark skin girl would have been just as popular and loved by us black men but she would have never been given the opportunity to be popular because our people dont own the networks that they play these shows on. Even if the producer of a show is black like Cosby was, they all belong to white network owners. They can say 'this dark skin woman wont give ratings to our white viewers so pick someone else' no matter what our people think. That's why black producers shouldn't sell out to white people. It would be better to make little money and have complete control and have something your people love than try to achieve the typical 'universal success' people like Cosby got (and they ended up turning their back on him anyways).

I have noticed that when actors take roles that are diametrically opposed to their breakout role, their career suffers beyond recovery. Another example of this is Elizabeth Berkeley who played Jessie Spano from Saved By the Bell. She never recovered from Showgirls. Americans in general do not like celebs dabbling in dark subjects, especially satanic themes. Lil Nas' X got so much blowback and his blood shoes flopped. People forget despite its problems, the U.S. is a very religious Christian country.

I've always felt that Lisa Bonet sold herself short. I feel like she could have had a very long running and successful career in acting had she not made such hasty, wild (seemingly) decisions. While The Cosby show may not have been the best place for her long-term, but it was definitely a huge opportunity. To see such success in one black family on TV, was unheard of and Cosby not wanting to portray one of his daughters as a young single mother makes complete sense. The Cosby show gave the black family an integrity that other shows simply didn't portray

Lots of our “favs” are completely different behind closed doors because they know they have to sell a certain image to the public. Taking the Cosby show away, Lisa’s image tanked in general after her movie and pregnancy. So it wasn’t just Cosby who felt a certain way, the general public felt some kind of way as well. Lenny cheated on her and when she got with Jason he was a broke f-boi who she essentially took care of for some years. They struggled with money for a while and then when he blew up he started cheating on her. Not to mention he always seemed VERY immature. Getting these men isn’t a brag if you get dogged out.
Stop getting so excited about them because dating them isn’t important in the grand scheme of things. Worry about your money and taking care of yourself. They want you when you don’t care about them.

Cosby was a successful brand, say what you want. Angel Heart was an extreeeemely dark movie. I watch it once and never watched it again. Even if he did not have such a strong brand, I would have made the same decision. Cosby consulted a psychologist for The Cosby Show to make sure that the images were not harmful to the public and showed blacks in a positive light. I can still watch it and smile.

Loved Lisa Bonet in the neo-noir film, "Angel Heart." The movie was/is compelling but controversial upon release. Lisa should have been offered other artistic roles. But she wasn't. Although she had outgrown her "good girl" role in The Cosby Show, he could have shown her support as a gifted actress rather than fire her. He had the power to praise her film career and/or support/encourage her. He didn't. He was selfish. She was ahead of her time AND Hollywood didn't offer her roles she would have excelled in. Thanks, Karine, for your tribute to the beautiful, artistic Lisa Bonet!

It was very different from Denise Huxtable, and showed her range as an actress. She could have easily went on hiatus and had her baby and let the hoopla die down.
