I’m a bit of an Old Opeth purist, I was introduced to them during Deliverance. I consider 1999-2005 their most profound, impactful era….but damn, this to me, might be their best album ever. This is Opeth at their peak and Mikael is standing at the summit of creativity in music. Really was NOT expecting this album to be this god damn good. Completely in awe. I’ve played this all the way through probably 20 times now. So. Good.
I was introduced to Opeth about 25 years ago and I became a fanatic since. I totally agree. The last willi is better than any other album they made before. Still life, Blackwater Park, Ghost reveries,.. which is insane.
Same as me pretty much. This is the Opeth l love. Mixing melodious and heavy, the fragile and the brutal. No other group can make more beautiful changes in tempo in a song.
Damn. The way the chord develops at about 10:02 and again about 10:14 makes me feel feelings I didn't know were there. This album uses everything they've learned up till now, for real. I'm 100% here for it. Every instrumental and vocal tool and technique is on display here. What a band, and what a time to be alive! New Opeth babyyyyyyy!
I have savoured every minute of this album and I'm now on my 5th Spin. It's still revelaing something different every time. It's eery, eclectic and the production is fantastic. Special mention goes to Walterri's drumming which is awesome throughout. Album has some real Mr Bungle vibes as well which is a good thing.
The best thing this album has done, from what I've seen, is not only has it brought a chunk of the Oldpeth purists back, BUT, the very same purists are reassessing the newpeth era with much more open ears, and finding real musical joy in there!
Excellent album. Got tickets to see them live in Auckland next November. Less than a year to go. Ive got Marillion , Gazpacho and Airbag in Oslo before then and then back in Auckland for Metallica a few days after Opeth, roll on 2025.
Jim, idk if you’ve already caught it since posting this video but, in short, the patriarch has an affair with the maid, she is forced to go but the disabled girl stays and they feel it their duty to raise her. The two sons, as revealed in S4 are actually not his, he was infertile, but thought to blame the mother for a barren womb. The wife is knocked up by a lower class “nobody” (I’m not sure if she cheated or that the patriarch and mother both agreed to try with a donor) which it seems as if afterwards the patriarch had the man killed (in a nameless grave) so that the secret of their strange arrangement was ever found out. He had to swallow his pride, because he is an upstanding man of affairs, for the sake of lineage and heritage (a son (but accidentally had twin boys) to carry on the name and estate.
Excellent but my comment from part 1 holds - this is not a 'bitty' record. It should be listened to as a whole. I understand why individual tracks are credited but I think that leaving them essentially untitled was a good idea.

Same here, fantastic music
Well said. I adore them and have for years. But this album just...has everything we love about them in one place.
2005? You forgot about Watershed or something?

I mean, it's one of those albums that starts out great and then just keeps getting better and better with each song. It's fabulous.

@@adamgoad4131 It reminds me of The Red Chord.

Great call on the Bungle vibes
I still have a tMr. Bungle shirt that says "There's a tractor in my balls". God damn i love this whole album.
Man I can't wait to see your reaction to S5 and S6, easily my favorites
4, 5 and 6 are my favorites. Incredible run

Think $4 might be my fave so far, such an awesome and beautifully diverse track, from the guitars to the flute to the harp and the growls! Oooof!
I don't quite understand this album yet, but with each new listen I like it more and more. Thank you for your reaction!
That flute, so unexpected and so tasty
Mr Ian Anderson himself!

I always get reminded of Jenna Marbles at the end of all your videos. What made you use her squeaky toy "trademark" sound?
It is isn't it? I feel like i had a music composition lesson 😳
